Title: Built a Ludus, well, actually two!
Post by: Oldben1 on August 28, 2013, 02:58:15 AM
Hello, I haven't posted on this topic before, but I was really impressed with the Ludus in a tin idea, especially since it kind of followed my latest theme of making more portable games for Pulp and Strange Aeons.

I had a really nice pine rectangular box already, so I stained it and antiqued it.  Than I built the arena inside.

I really liked some of the round arenas as well, so I decided to try a few techniques I didn't use on the rectangle.  I found a really good inch hexagon  stencil at Michael's.  It's from Martha Stewart!  I think it turned out well as my floor.

Nice job.  I like the second one the best.

Great going. I like the second one best too.  :)

That hex stencil is a time saver, even if you wanted to trace the hexes onto a board.

Lovely job, I see I will have to make a ludus in a tin as well.

I tried using the stencil in a few different ways, tracing the hexes, and even applying paint and sand.  I didn't like the results so I ended up glueing the stencil down instead and applying paint and grit.  The 25mm bases fit nicely in the slots and it is very uniform.  It was a pretty cool find.

Thanks for all the positive comments.

They both do look fantastic!

Can you share some of the techniques on the round arena?

Very much in keeping with your latest trends.
Very clever when it comes to storage too...

I just bought a paper mâché round box from Michaels.  I figured out how high I wanted the walls to be and cut the bottom down, it actually ended up being the same size as the lid.  I cut and glued the stencil to a piece of round card.  I painted and flocked it using glue and sand and paint.  I glued it to the bottom.  The walls are a mixture of cork table mats and brick styrene left overI made the doors out of play mobile doors and bits of wood.  The stencil was the key. The players fit nicely into the slots and turn very easily.
