Title: Adventures in 15mm Scifi
Post by: dijit on September 10, 2013, 12:46:00 PM
I'd written off 15mm after dabbling in Flames of War, as being too small to paint well and too large to paint badly. Plus i had the feeling that God's own scale is 28mm (well really it's 1:1, but thats another story ;) ). Then a friend (Phoenikuz) gave me a 15mm scifi mini from Critical Mass (the guy in the front row centre of the first pic) and on a whim I painted, enjoyed it and felt it painted well. Then I discovered one of my favourite sculptors PF has sculpted loads of 15mm across a range of lines, that didn't help too much either. The nail in the coffin for my objections was realising that the equivalent of 4' by 4' table only takes up half that at 15mm and can easily fit on a coffee table.

So I've spent a while looking at different lines and bought some bits from Brigade Models and CP Models together with a bunch from Wayswatcher. I've spent a month or so painting up these guys and aim to experiment in sci-fi skirmish gaming in 15mm.
Remember these guys are TINY.

The terrain is downscaled ikea huts from topo. Printed out 50% size (ie two pages per A4 sheet)

I've also started a little hover car, made out of two plastic spoons:

That hover car is super cute. Top work all round for 15mm

Thanks the hover was one of those things that you think about as your cleaning your teeth on the way to bed and then have to send the next hour working on before you can actually get to bed :)

Can't see the images at work... very inconsistent which ones get through firewalls... will have to try again at home.

That said, tiny is when you play around with 6 mm skirmish.  Bingo chips for bases.  As long as you identify base (various methods tried) you can skirmish your heart a way in a cookie/biscuit tin easily.

Gracias,

Glenn

Nice to see my old stuff get painted up, and that grav car is a beauty.

That hovercar is brilliant! I have a small amount of 15mm sci fi figs, mostly very old Traveler stuff. Now I know how to build some vehicles!

I don't know how you dare post this here...

15mm skirmish, heresy!

Thou shalt not tempt me from the one true scale. Be gone with thine temptresses ways!

(lovely figs, great PJs, look forward to seeing more of them lol)

Those figures look great. I love the air car. What a terrific idea. Now I have to find some large serving spoons to make that in 28mm.

Thanks again all.

I was frightened this would be the reaction ;)

If anyone has any other bright ideas to make hover cars then please do share. Unfortunately I've not seen any plastic spoons big enough for 28mm as they'd have to be serving spoons.

Plastic (disposable) serving spoons for picnics?

I can't say I've honestly ever seen plastic serving spoons. Perhaps I've just not looked hard enough. Anyway there's some more infantry painted, just needing their bases finishing and pictures taken.

Time for an update.
Here we the Spooner 3000 together with it's one careful ower - Repee.

So a few more mercenaries painted up, togetehr with another robot, crime boss and diplomat (back row from left)

I also had some nurglings lurking in my bits box, so they've been based and painted, not sure as what yet. They'll probably be some sort of beasty to kill.

Lovely stuff, not what I need to see as have started to be tempted by 15mm Sci-Fi.

But just in case do you have any links for those PF models?
Title: Re: Adventures in 15mm Scifi

Thanks again. A spaceport is exacting what I'm going for, some sort of Mos Eisley type setting. I've had a look around 15mm.co.uk, and looks like they've got some decent models, but it's a little difficult to tell for sure as the pictures aren't always great, and sometime the painting isn't either, and on a few both of the above. So it's a little difficult to tell for sure.

But just in case do you have any links for those PF models?

Yeah sure no problem:

Both places are fast and good service.

There are also some with Critical Mass Miniatures, in their mercs line, which I haven't got yet.

Ok, just to show this project hasn't died.
First a few minis from Khurasan I've painted up over the past couple of months. Lovely minis to paint. Behind them is some sort of tractor type thing I picked up second hand, a nice little model that'll provide cover in the streets.
(http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o694/Dijit1980/IMG_0019_zpsc02ab165.jpg) (http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/Dijit1980/media/IMG_0019_zpsc02ab165.jpg.html)

I've also been working on some terrain. I've got lots more bits part finished and ideas for others. But what I have covers 2' by 2'8" board. So that's a good start. I went for the classic arid region of Firefly/Tatoonine/a myriad of other scoff tropes, though it'd be interesting to try a sci-fi temperate type board.
(http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o694/Dijit1980/IMG_0017_zpsc5843cc0.jpg) (http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/Dijit1980/media/IMG_0017_zpsc5843cc0.jpg.html)

(http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o694/Dijit1980/IMG_0018_zps9d7bd58f.jpg) (http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/Dijit1980/media/IMG_0018_zps9d7bd58f.jpg.html)

I'm playing to start a solo campaign soon, with Fantastic Worlds providing the game mechanics and the Mythos RPG to the provide the RPG elements in between. Mythos has a GM emulator, that should help keep it fresh.

Fantastic stuff dijit, love your Spooner 3000 too - may have to make a few of those for my 6mm, maybe using smaller sugar spoons! The CP models stuff is nice, got some of their robots and crime guys for Ghosts of Hefei.

Glad to see how this project is working out.

Makes me glad to know my decision to move from 25+mm to 3mm/15mm (while keeping some of the legacy 6mm/1970s 25mm stuff at least for now) was not just a flight of fancy.  While I am far from your level of painting skill I am actually inspired to try and improve my skills by increasing my painting rate.  You have no idea how inspiring your work is to me.

Anyone know a company that makes 15mm or 6mm figures that could pass for those old 25mm Galactic Grenadiers?

Plastic measuring cups. If you can find the scoop style ones, they have a really nice sci fi shape.  :)

Ever find a really old thread, got to one point and said 'no, really?' followed by a really swift facepalm?

As for 28mm or larger, I know they usually get put up as small tanks, but I think you could do something similar to this with a small PC mouse.

Or some cut-down Easter eggs?

IIRC Black Widow Pilot had some Easter Eggs Starguard support vehicles back before there were any (not to name names) "Three Letter Miniatures Forums."

Good idea then and now.  Then because you had no other choice and good now because they are less expensive.

Gotcha, Glenn.

However, using most of the egg would give you something like an Maschinen Krieger tank. If you longitudinally slice the inner, say, third away, you end up with something like large spoons. The throwaways could be pulp car fenders...  lol

For 28mm, you'd have to have LARGE eggs, but I've seen, in the craft stores, up to about a foot and a half long.

Yes, still well away at this work. I've added a few bits and pieces recently, so I guess I ought to dust off the camera and take so photos.

As for the Spooner 3000, I have another version currently under construction and will post pictures when it's done. I've also considered making myself som MAK like tanks from egg halves, just been waiting for the hobby shop here in Vejle to start stocking them ready for easter.

Smaller eggs could be AI driven (pun intended) AFVs.

'merican hobby shops had some for sale shortly after St Paddy's, and Valentine clearance not long after that. I know you need lead in time to start crafting, but you damn near get the proverbial 'Christmas in July' with the pre-selling.

I know, I should complain? Usually SOMETHING in each clearance suggesting terrain, though Halloween is the TOPS!  ;)
