Title: Industrial/Blakes 7TV Terrain (Pic heavy)
Post by: Overlord on September 12, 2013, 06:17:58 PM
A while ago Karl at Crooked Dice asked if I was interested in building some terrain for him, suitable for a B7 or Industrial setting.
The layout was to be modular, generally 2 storeys high and with walkways.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/KarlDesigns01_zpsb8686037.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/overlord_awc/media/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/KarlDesigns01_zpsb8686037.jpg.html)

The brief gave me a lot of freedom as to the exact design.  I decided that having it fit in with the Ainsty Pipework range would make it even more adaptable.  The 'modules' are based on 5cm increments and are nominally 10cm high.  The base was of foam PVC, then a central 'box' of foamcore.  On to this I attached pipework, boxes, cables etc using a wide range of components: Urban War refinery & platformer bits. plain & embossed plastic card, lots of odds'n'ends from the bits box:

I made 2 test modules to start, just to check Karl was happy with the general design:

Module 1:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module01_05_zps95977968.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/overlord_awc/media/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module01_05_zps95977968.jpg.html) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module01_09_zps7c776036.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/overlord_awc/media/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module01_09_zps7c776036.jpg.html)

Module 2:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module02_02_zps8fc89b88.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/overlord_awc/media/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module02_02_zps8fc89b88.jpg.html) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module02_01_zps24653783.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/overlord_awc/media/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module02_01_zps24653783.jpg.html)

Module 2 & Ainsty Pipework:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module02_04_zps3585fe1c.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/overlord_awc/media/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module02_04_zps3585fe1c.jpg.html)

Modules 1 & 2:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module02_05_zpsf9f682a0.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/overlord_awc/media/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module02_05_zpsf9f682a0.jpg.html)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/overlord_awc/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module02_06_zps6cd424ee.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/overlord_awc/media/7TV/Blakes%207TV/B7%20Terrain/Module02_06_zps6cd424ee.jpg.html)

The walkway design was the biggest issue.  My original idea using bespoke laser-cut grating was too fragile.  A fair bit of hit & miss occurred until I sorted it out.

More to follow......

Fear not, we're not casting this up, it's a scratchbuild for games and photo purposes :) and it's quite beautiful! Thanks again Paul!

What's the plans for painting? Are you going with a silver? A white? Or something completely different? Are you doing a board for them as well?

Painting is going to be fairly simple and subdued.  Predominantly grey, in keeping with the source material.

E.M.A. Model Supplies.  The free (in UK) catalogue is very handy & full of things that you never realised you needed.  :D

I never did find a perfect match, but got close enough to fit in.  I used Evergreen Metal Siding (4530) .125 (3.2mm) spacing, 1mm thick.
Cheapest I found was here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Evergreen-Sheet-Styrene-4530-Metal-Siding-125-3-2mm-Spacing-040-Thick-/380689414784?pt=UK_ToysGames_ModelKits_ModelKits_JN&hash=item58a2db7a80
Very fast service too.

If Overlord disappears for a while, it completely isn't because I've kidnapped him and forced him to live in my loft turning boxes of crap into gorgeous terrain, honest.

This is really inspiring stuff. :-*

The steps are Ainsty (6013), but I built open supports for them, rather than use the solid bases as it fitted with the walkways better (and Vila can hide underneath them!)

If Overlord disappears for a while, it completely isn't because I've kidnapped him and forced him to live in my loft turning boxes of crap into gorgeous terrain, honest.

Here are soem dodgy phone shots from the weekend. My dodgy snaps don't do Paul's refinery justice! It's gorgeous :)

Paul finished it Friday and bought is along Saturday, so he didn't get a chance to photograph it properly. However, it's also going to used in one of our new books, which we're photographing for this week, so will get lots more.

That assumes Karl (Crooked Dice) will let me out of his loft....  :D

It's not the loft you have to worry about! When he starts making you a special dungeon
cellar, then I'd worry!! ;)

Seriously though great work bud!! :-* :-*

Stunning. I've just painted up a whole bunch of Crooked Dice Fed Troopers and I was planning on some scenery as a later project. This has inspired me to be a lot more ambitious than I was planning to be!

Are you two geniuses communicating between floors via the plumbing again?

Stop tapping on the pipes, it's keeping us awake at Crooked Towers ;)

Good stuff. I saw it in person too and it looked the business. You need to build a quarry though for the other location shots :D
