I'm looking for a 28mm freighter/cargo ship in resin/plastic for gaming rather than a scale model at vast cost. Anyone got any suggestions - I'm trying to avoid scratch building.
Thanks,
Roderick

Have you considered building one in cardboard? I made one once. I used book binders card (roughly 1½mm thick)

Well, i would gladly pay the extra, to get what i want.
No interest in a cargo ship, i want a tramp steamer.
also, 36 inches, vs 34 cm so 2.5 times LARGER
So the price is rather justified.

look for playmobil on ebay
the plastic is very good for conversions

*facepalm*
Doh
SO HE IS !

I am a bit puzzled here
the difference between "tramp steamer" and "freight liner" does not refer to the size, but to the travelling schedule and to the flexible cargo options of the tramp trade.
the liberty ship
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_ships
reflects quite well the 10000 dwt of a common larger tramp steamer
what would be the difference?
Because a tramp steamer is a cargo ship after all....

I built a steamer that was 5 ft long if that helps. Construct out of wood it's on the blog somewhere Google's shedwars steamer for pics

I got mine from Playmobile. I intend to do one like this guy:
http://tableterror.blogspot.com/2009/05/playmobil-frachtschiff.html
Sadly I think it might be out of print. I had a hard time finding one then I emailed Playmobil and even though it wasnt on the site the must have had a few left and I got one for less than $50.

There was a guy in USA who last I heard was with armchair general. His ships were all scratch built went for around 150 dollars. But all looked very good on par with your old glory pictured which I may get. My first game starts in Antwerp ..so need some ships and going to get a 1/444 scale submarine that may be better then a 1/72 as would be to big.

Oooh! I like this. It would be good for mid Victorian onwards too, so very flexible. I 'll be adding this to the list :D

as I said, ebay might be Your friend, plus Playmobil usually recycles it's ship moulds many times

Thanks to all. Having seen the "Doreen" I've decided to go for the Playmobil option & convert the superstructure - a reasonably sized model at not too silly a price.

Reviresco does a VERY nice paper model of a tramp steamer in both 15mm and 28mm. These are mixed media kits with paper, doweling, metal parts that need to be painted, and work very well with most 28mm and 15mm figures. If you have no experience with paper models this might put you off at first. Don't worry. Just take your time and it will look great! Reviresco also produces other ship kits that would work very nicely for the pulp era as well.
