Title: VSF Flying saucer
Post by: Geudens on May 20, 2008, 03:27:39 PM
I wanted to make flying saucers for some planned VSF games, so I had to find an easy method of constructing a light contraption of limited dimensions (for tactical use on the tabletop).

I have some empty vacformed clear plastic foodcontainers that I normally use to mix paint or clean my brushes in, so I placed two on top of each other, glueing a rod in the centre of the bottom one to hold a removable (GW) clear plastic flying stand.  I wanted the top one to look more or less like an Ericson ironclad turret (fairly high compared to the hull to get a "Victorian" look for the flying saucer), so I added some small washers for windows and a larger one (slightly bend) to hold the barrel of a plastic SF gun barrel from the bitbox.  To mask the imprinted text at the top I used a large washer and added a cylindrical lego bit and a piece of bent pipe to act as a rangefinder.  I toyed with the idea of adding some decals but decided against it in the end.

The heavy washer also helped in centering the point of gravity of an otherwise very light model (actually, sort of a vacformed kit...).  The whole thing was undercoated and sprayed in silver metal.  Finally the glass of the windows (if it is glass, you never know with these Martians...) was painted ochre and the gun blackwashed.  The first one took 90 minutes to make, but the next I can do certainly in less than an hour.  Apart from the paint and the flying stand (GW...) the cost is nil.

The idea is that the spaceship can "hover" over the battlefield or be "parked" as a mobile pillbox to support the Martian invaders.  BTW, I use GW Kroot for Martians as can be seen in the pictures.

Hooray for Deathray! lol

Lovely piece. Perfect for a martian flying machine. The little periscope made my day.

There has been some great creations here recently, this one included. Good work.

I'm feeling rather inadequate (wait for the comment from Malamute).

I feel in this instance a comment is unnecessary and in any case its not healthy to keep putting yourself down, thats my job lol

Nicely done!
I love the use of your Warzone conversions, too. Nice job also on those Kroot. They could pass as Martians indeed!  8) :D
