Title: Latest plane received
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on May 21, 2008, 11:27:09 AM
a new latest sticky :) Always thought it's a pity to see going lost in the "Latest mini" thread all the lovely planes the folks are buying. Here are two beauties I've received today:

A Nieuport 23, that appearence is of the Bolshevik 15th RAO 1919.

And the famous Sopwith Schneider (developed from Tabloid)

No, that was two Caudron GIIIs and two Henri Farmans of some description, I believe.

The Schneider's moment of glory was a bombing raid on a Zeppelin base.

Very nice indeed especially the Schneider.

I recently got my hands on one of these from Ebay. Best not tell the wife how much I paid though :o

Does it look like a decent kit?

Picked up some advanced German WWII tech kits to go with my Weird War II gaming.  Thought I'd do a game with a couple Natters where some US Rangers would have to secure them so they can be studied for the American war effort.

Next is trying to find a 1/48 V2 and some of it's support vehicles without having to put a second mortgage on my house. ;)  Quarter Kits is so expensive!

Why not try the Pegasus Hobbies one?

http://www.magictoybox-online.co.uk/acatalog/info%5fpg8416%2ehtml

Since it´s an American company, you should be able to find a stockist in the US. I´ve built some of their tanks, great models and swell value for money.

Additionally, Revell Germany just re-issued an ancient 1/69th scale V2. You could possibly build an Amerikageschoss with one of those and one of the Pegasus ones... or look for the 1/35th Dragon Models one.

Just got me a Testors Spad XIIIc

A lovely, simple model to make at a very reasonable price at my local hobby store.

Its going to be painted in the colours of the Gansu Republican Airforce colours, the famous Jiuquan squadron
of circa 1921 (more on that, eventually in the BoB forum).

Beauty, and one I've built before. WWI planes are tough, since they are so small, even when compared to small WWII planes.
My dad is building a SPAD XIII right now, full scale though, all wood construction, for the Yankee Air Museum.

These are Skytrex 1/144 I'll use for Wings of War. They're included in the forthcoming WoW-boosters Immelmann and Dogfight.

They are:
Fokker E.III
Airco DH.2
RAF SE5a
Siemens-Schuckert D.III
Siemens-Schuckert D.IV
Fokker E.V / D.VIII (okay, this one has no stats in WoW, but I needed it!)

Now, next question is: where do you get flying stands?

I'll tell you one thing, it took a lot of work to get that kit to that standard.  Not one of Aurora's best efforts.
I've still got one of the KB issue kits kicking around, probably stuffed in a box with one or another of their two-seaters.  I'm waiting for the beauty at the bottom of this page.

The cobra is indeed a corgi - the apache I picked up in portugal.

I think they will probably be alright together, particularly as they will be in the air.

AH! From Skytrex 1/144: two K.u.K. Luftfahrtruppen Aviatik D1, two Ansaldo A1 and a big honkin' Gotha G.IV, also for the double-headed eagle. I've ordered a length of light grey cotton felt which I will paint up as Venice from above. They are for WoW, of course, and will be added to the two Italian SPAD XIII and the UFAG C.1 I already have.

Post by: Hammers on November 23, 2009, 05:20:32 PM
Using Google Earth as a template I realized that at 3000 feet the whole of Venice would be a bit of a chore. But it is doable with some simplifications, like making some lagoons less vast and using two tone colour scheme for walls and teal roofs (darker on the shade side). The good thing about Venice is that its pretty well preserved through the decades. I just have to omit some obvious anachronisms like the cruise ship docks etc. I figure light grey felt will make a pretty good as a base since atmospheric haze makes colours less distinct at higher altitudes.

1/48th Walrus seaplane

I have the SMER Walrus. Lovely bit of kit. I'm a sucker for floatplanes and flying boats. There's just something so old-fashioned and romantic about them.

And who knows, one day I may actually even build the kit!

Although its displaying a deplorable attitude towards Negroes, I am a great fan of the German expressionism in that poster. Just a few shades, contrasts and colours and you manage to get so mush across. I have the 'Uboot heraus!' poster in a tube somewhere. Wish I had a place to hang it.

Should be in "Latest Book..." really, but it goes with the above, so I'm putting it here:

Really nice little book. Designed for scratchbuilders like Chris really (1:72 and 1:48 scale plans included) so as I have a kit I don't really need it, but it is packed with interesting facts and loads of photos I've never seen before, plus a couple of colour plates giving nice alternative colour schemes to the one that the kit provides. Interestingly enough, for a plane with a reputation of being super-reliable and robust, an alarming number of the pictures show crashed examples bent all to hell or in several bits.  :)

They do loads of these books. I can see myself going on a spree and getting a whole lot more of 'em.

Now that´s a nice one, and thanks for the heads up!

Interestingly enough, for a plane with a reputation of being super-reliable and robust, an alarming number of the pictures show crashed examples bent all to hell or in several bits.  :)

I think back in the day any design that regularly managed 100 flying hours without severe malfunctions was considered "reliable".

On the other hand, I´d think seaplanes would be more subject to material stress due to the humid and salty conditions, so I wouldn´t wonder if they malfunctioned more frequently than land aircraft.

Among the interesting tidbits about the Wölfchen in this book (regarding our discussion a while back about fitting something similar on my little auxiliary cruiser)...

(Found here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=13675.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=13675.0))

...is that apparently the plane was carried on the ship in disassembled form, and they had to assemble it each time they wanted to use it - an operation that took several hours. This would be done when in empty seas, to search for new prey. When among shipping, the seaplane on the deck would have been a bit too much of a giveaway that they weren't the innocent merchantman they were pretending to be, I guess.

Also, the plane wasn't really designed for take-off and landing in the rough open seas, and they damaged the thing most times they tried to use it (it would often smack back down on to the suface of the water when trying to take off). So ongoing improvised repairs without much in the way of spare parts was the order of the day.

I'm definitely warming to the idea of including this bird in a game, whatever flimsy rationale may be cooked up to justify it.

A big order for "Check Your 6: Jet Age", for the Ogaden War (1977-78.) Heroics and Ross. For the Ethiopians: seven 1/300 F5 "Freedom Fighters", three MiG 21s. For the Somalis: Five MiG 21s, three MiG 19s, three MiG 17s. Also got two Canberras for the Ethiopians - but I'll be honest with you, guys - they are not good models. Some bad pitting, and the detail is just not up to par, compared to the NavWar Canberra I had already been hoarding for my '82 Argies, so I went ahead and painted up the NavWar, and when I get around to finishing the Argies (next on the list), I'll try to make do with one of these H&R models.

The rest of the models, happily, are quite nice, and more than adequate.

Almost forgot. In 1/144 for Aerodrome 2: four "Sweet" MC.200s, and four early model Hurricanes. Already have many other planes in this scale, but the first I've done in 1/144 in over a year, aside from three Italian Stukas done over the Christmas holiday. Should be fun.

Those Dervishes are gonna catch it now, assuming I ever get round to building the thing.

According to Hannants, "Coming Soon" from Roden is the Air Ambulance version, which made its debut in Somaliland in 1920. So I'll probably have to get one of those, too.  :)

I just wish they would get around to doing the DH9A. I suppose they will, they have done different iterations of their Brisfit.  By the way Plynkes have you noticed their MkIV Brisfit?

Someday, someone will make an affordable/buildable plastic injection Wapiti in an appropriate scale.
Title: Re: Latest plane received
Post by: Plynkes on November 25, 2010, 08:35:54 PM
I've already got an Eduard Brisfit, but I'm afraid I don't have the kind of tidy mind required to keep up with the various marks of Great War aeroplanes. They all look a bit the same to me. I think one Brisfit is enough. For now.

I actually bought the Brisfit for my Somaliland project, and was going to "pretend" it was a DH9 purely for gaming purposes (much in the way various newer aircraft play the role of other older aircraft in films), as I couldn't find a DH9 at the time. But now I have this the Brisfit is definitely on the back-burner, as I don't really have a use for it now.

This Roden DH9 may well be the wrong sort for Somaliland...
... I can't really tell from this pic (how are your eyes?). But either way at least it is a DH9, and that's a damn sight better than a Bristol Fighter, so it will do fine for me.  :)

Well, squinting like mad, it looks like a standard brand DH-9, at least judging by the fron of it and the radiator. DH9A's look remarkably like DH-4s, big clunky Liberty engine up front.

Roden one is perfect for the job I'd say. look forward to seing pics of your RAF vs the Mildly Annoyed Mullah game(s), always a pleasure looking at your work.

Oh yes, the big square-fronted sort of thing. I can't decide which version I think looks more appealing. Looking at the photo again I think you are, as usual, correct. That's cool - It's nice not having to settle for "nearly but not quite the right thing" just for once.

For Somaliland in the 1920s the aircraft you are looking for is the Airco DH 9A with cut down fuselage to enhance cooling.  Like this one.

Got a parcel from Hannants today, containing a Smêr Airco D.H.2 in 1/50th scale and a 1/48th Eduard Bristol F.2 Fighter. The latter truly is a revelation and really shows what injection plastic kits have achieved, quality-wise, in the last 50 years (the D.H.2 is originally from the 60s, and god, does it hurt to imagine the 1960s being up to 50 years ago).

But what gets me a bit riled up: why don't model airplane manufacturers add pilot figures anymore? I'll have to get a set of the Copplestone pilots for the Brisfit.

...why don't model airplane manufacturers add pilot figures anymore?...

I think you partially answered your own question in your post.  Models are so detailed these days that it really defeats the purpose of having a fully equipped cockpit, with photoetched details and readable instruments, if you're going to plunk a body in the seat, particularly in some of the WWI crates.  I don't think 'cramped' quite covers some of the accommodations!

If I remember correctly, some of the Eduard kits actually do have seated pilots, albeit usually with a nasty gaping 'wound' in the body!

An Altaya/Ixo diecast Fiat G-91in Portuguese markings.  :-* :-* :-* Exquisite little model, the old half built Airfix version can now become a wreck marker.

Somehow, without ever quite planning it, I'm acquiring a decent little Portuguese airforce for the 1960s and 1970s. If only someone made a Dornier 27 in a useful scale.......

Shame! I thought someone had started making them.

Easily my favourite plane.

Today.

Edit: Just googled "Aeroclub Mosquito". Found one at $49.90. Way out of my league.

Try Kingkit, he was selling them for £11.99 a while ago, might have one?

The F-Toys models are indeed very nice little models, I have one of their F-8 Bearcats. Not sure how they all come but mine did require a little construction of the snap together variety. They repaint easily too, although the actual factory job on them is quite respectable.

Oh and it was even cheaper than the bloody awful Fujimi kit, which now looks set to become a crashed objective marker.

My Russian Civil War project gets air support!

A pair of Testors Classics 1/48 kits, one SPAD Type 13 and a Nieuport Type 17C, both of which appeared in Russian Imperial Air Force inventory (so sayeth Wikipedia, anyway) and both of which could have appeared at various times during the Russian Civil War.

One of them will become White Russian, the other Bolshevik, I haven't decide which will get which livery, and might wind up just flipping a coin.

The Testors Classics kits are cheap ($8 Cdn), basic and should do nicely for wargaming props.

Go with the Nieuport for the Reds. There are some nice historical schemes. I believe that very few SpadXIIIs were purchased as they were only really coming into production a few months prior to the outbreak of the Revolution. The main Spad type used was the Spad VII but hey, a Spad is a Spad in my book.

Pretty much what I'm thinking. The Reds will get the Nieuport in a silver/white scheme with red stars everywhere; the Whites will get the Spad in tan with roundels and possibly a death's head on the tail.

The Spad 13 apparently never did make it to Russia, but like you said, the 7 did and they're physically quite similar.

I'd forgotten about the website "Wings Palette" until rediscovering it this evening. It's Russian, and has a huge number of colour plates scavenged from all over the place. Here's their Red Nieuports: http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww1/f/113/1/0
and their Imperial Russian Spad VII page: http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww1/f/257/22/0

Interestingly, the Reds appear to have put red stars on the horizontal stabilizers of some of their aircraft as well as the wings and fuselage. I don't think I've ever seen that done before.

"Bargain" on E-bay ...
Both are from Franklin Mint Armour, both are 1/48 scale He 111 of the Luftwaffe ... and they are "size monsters"  :D

First of a version during the Battle of Britain, the swastika has been removed (only on the picture).

Next one is another He 111 stationed in Africa. Swastika has been "altered" by the manufacturer already. Kinda silly, since the other one has one big, evil swastika on the tail fin ...

And just to show the scale, a shot of LAM German Marines with the He 111.

Enjoy ... I sure do! :-*

Yup, they actually do make a Ju 52, actually several different ones - even a good old Lufthansa one  :). But be prepared to spend silly amounts of cash. I got lucky with mine, as they were not "labled" correctly. Guess noone saw them. Ju 52s on ebay go for around 100€ + ... don't say I didn't warn you.  :D

Last, but not least a Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-7. I am not so sure on this one. It doesn't say on the box and the closest I came on Google was an A-7. Anyway, I am pretty sure it is a Fw 190 ... :D

As I'm presently building all the required models for a scifi RPG campaign, I had to get my hands on a spacestation. And I didn't want to scratchbuild, as this needs to be done fast. Scale is approximately 1:1000, and I'm using all kinds of stuff, from Epic tanks with wings to Em4 fighters, complete kitbashes and converted cheap snap-fit Star Wars kits. There's even a Battleship Yamato ship on its way here. But now I needed a very large space station, for the PC group to dock (and probably demolish in a session or two...  ::) ).

So I found an OOP Perry Rhodan Sol ship on Marktplaats (a local Dutch Ebay-like site), which often has some hidden gems. And boy did it this time!  ;)

Even though it regularly goes on Ebay around €50,-, I made a cheeky offer of €15,-, which was promptly accepted! But then he replied that he had some more 'spaceship boxes'. Turned out to be a vintage Lindberg Star Probe station and a ERTL Millennium Falcon! And all three kits were still bagged and in their boxes. I offered €60,- and he went for it, including shipping! :o

So, now I have two Space Stations (even though the Perry Rhodan one actually is supposed to be an 8km long generation-ship), and a long desired, but never before obtained, YT-1300 in a scale that approximately will work with 28mm figures.

Came in this evening, and my weekend is already a good one...  8)

Two planes for air interdiction for my 1955 Invasion! of Canada by the Grays game:

1. a CF-100 Canuck "Clunk", by Raiden/I-94 - the fighter to contend with the UFOs. Quite possibly the ugliest plane ever built. Many Canadian pilots would cry when given the Clunk over a Sabre assignment! lol. Going to paint this one in bare metal silver and red.

2. a T-33 T-Bird, by Scotia/Collectair - an early Electronic Warfare model for the RCAF. Going to paint this in black and red.

Waiting on RCAF roundels from Dom's Decals.

10 very simple Spitfire kits in approximately 1/56 scale. They set me  back €1,99 a piece!

A couple have been shipped off to Mason, but that leaves me plenty to go about making a pre/early war flightline for my Fallschirmjäger to attack :D

The plan is to do up 3 as Mk1 Spitfires on their flightline and one crashed into the ground (as an objective marker perhaps). The remaining 4 will then be subjected to some rudimental surgery to convert them into Bf109 lookalikes, again with 3 on the flightline and 1 crashed. You know; to return the favour with some Red Devils perhaps...

Many thanks to Belgian by the way, for pointing out that these little guys were out there 8)

Bought this while in China, it's a 1/48 scale diecast model of the aircraft in the Avatar movie. It's an excellent model and it cost around £10.  ;D

From the following comments i was checking eBay. I see two that say they are 1/40 scale and plastic.
Yours you listed as 1/48 and diecast.
Same model or another version? Thought maybe you might know.

That looks like it's the same one, though mine was listed as 1/48 (which isn't saying much, one of the two listings might be off and I'd have to check what was actually on the box cover if anything) and the hull is definitely metal, with plastic parts.

That's a nice piece of hardware. But it will take a while before i can order as i need to learn Chinese. Or is there an English language version hidden somewhere. They also have a nice truck that sort looks like a Vietnam era Gaz truck type. Might be worth a try.

Got 4 (four!) of these as a "bargain" on evil-bay.
What I like is, that they are small, sneaky things. I guess I will convert them, as I am not very fond of the attachable weapon systems. But they are pretty nice.

Just beware that the scales are all over the place. Those trucks are about 1/32 or so. Even those marked with a scale are well out. The T-55 is actually about 1/50, the Type 99 is somewhere around 1/40 for the hull, the turret being much smaller. All are available from Chinese ebay sellers.

Well, I bit the 'plane bullet. I ordered and bought a cheapie 1:48th Junkers Ju 88 A-4 and Messerschmitt Bf 110 G-2 off Fleabay.
They're joining the Messerschmitt 108 B, Focke-Wulf Fw 44 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8 that are in varying stages of assembly.

Just got my Revell 1/48 Hind in the mail yesterday.  :-* It's big. (And yes, that falls into the "no duh" category, but seriously you guys - it's big.) It's destined for a adventurous peripatetic career in Cold War and contemporary Africa... once, you know, I buy a few gallons of paint.
