Title: Small Army Society
Post by: Jaeger on October 08, 2013, 05:00:11 PM
I've been collecting Cobi Small Army (Lego Clone) for quite some time. And now it's time to take it to the gaming table:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/CobiK2_zps221edc6c.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/CobiK2_zps221edc6c.jpg.html)

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/IMG_5537_zps2e7342cb.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/IMG_5537_zps2e7342cb.jpg.html)

Other Lego Clones have been introduced later:
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/KaziTank_zps0b910a5e.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/KaziTank_zps0b910a5e.jpg.html)

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/BotB1_zps82d77bfe.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/BotB1_zps82d77bfe.jpg.html)

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/BLTank_zps66f10828.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/BLTank_zps66f10828.jpg.html)

I'll be using my own version of W40K 6th edition, because the systems handles vehicles, aircraft and loads of infantry rather succesfull.

Stay tuned.

Why not!?  I've seen Lego pirates, pulp adventures, ninja games and dungeons.  Have fun!  :)

Indeed. Why not. :)

And thanks. I'll be bringing my Collection to the Horisont V Con in Silkeborg (Denmark) mid November. Should be a lot of fun.

That's pretty cool looking stuff Jaeger. You've prompted me to share my own plastic pursuits in wargaming as well. :)

Thank you both. :)

I've just put the last vehicles together from a 1500 piece set:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/BLJeeps_zps86313bd3.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/BLJeeps_zps86313bd3.jpg.html)

I'll be adding some rules, so the field ambulance will Work well with infantry and the recovery vehicle might fix broken vehicles.

These are great.  My kids collect the Cobi figures as much as they do Lego, because the Cobi kits come with better and more weapons (At least the ones sold in the USA).  Keep the pics coming.  This is very interesting.

Good stuff.

How do the Cobi bricks mix with Lego.

I have thought of combining the two but have been unsure about the fit.

My kids seem to have had success with them.  I don't build them myselves so can't say more, but they usually have pretty exacting quality standards and I've not heard any complaints about loose fit or no-fit issues.
Title: Re: Small Army Society
Post by: Jaeger on October 12, 2013, 01:12:13 PM
Cobi fits perfectly with Lego.

Actually the jeeps, field ambulance and recovery vehicle are from Best-Lock. I wouldn't recommend newer Best-Lock sets as they are quite inferior to Lego/Cobi, but the older sets er just fine and very cheap.

In the 1500 brick set I got a Fighter Plane, a Tank, an APC, 3 Jeeps, a Field ambulance, a Recovery Vehicle, 18 minifigures and a host of 1x2 bricks for scenery for the Price of GBP 27 ($43).

The newer cobi is a bit more cool, but the Best-Lock set was just a steal imo.

Other clone brands I've tried are Enlighten and Kazi wich also are very nice.

From my experience, Cobi does fit well with Lego and vice versa. The aftermarket weapons like Brick Arms, Brickforge, Brick Warriors, and Minifig Cat/SiDan all work with Cobi and Lego. The weapons from the forementioned aftermarket manufacturers beat the Lego and Cobi weapons hands down.

Jaeger, have you tried any of the Mega Bloks stuff with your Cobi collection? There's some nice HALO stuff that may work for sci-fi, and some of their Dragon's Gate raised hills and the like have been on my radar for a while to use for terrain. Just wondering if you'd had any experience with this yet?

I've noticed that Mega Bloks get some of the better licenses too.  Although over here I noticed that Character Builders is expanding their ranges.  I saw CB Scooby-Doo sets when out with my kids last week.

You're right there. I saw recently that they're doing a collector's edition for Call of Duty. The Hummer looks like it'll fit nicely with my modern Spec Forces guys.  :D

CB HM Armed Forces and some Mega Blok sets are quite cool.

I just think their minifigs are a bit too... hmm... different from the Lego-type.

It seem like Cobi also is changing their minifigs and I'm not sure what to think of them yet.

Since last I've started planning a big gathering at my house in the spring. Theme will be:

I've also been trawling through ebay for more cheap models of planes, tanks and troops and I'll post them when they arrive.

And I'm getting a game in thursday. I'll see if I can piece a small Battle report together.

@nic-e: Yes. That would be very nice, and I think I almost have enough base plates atm. Unfortunately a lot of the are being used for my Songs of Bricks and Heroes game (Classic Castle Lego game).

I've seen the scale 40:1 but the models are all over the scale. Battleships and Aircrafts are too small, but it really doesn't matter too much. As long as the vehicles, ships and planes are designed to be used with minifigs, it all good.

I had my first battle tonight. I'll coment a bit more tomorrow, but here are the Photos:

Deployment:

Marines deploy by parachute (Deep strike) and blows the tracks of the Cobi APC:

You know ,we had a great toyshop here in Leicester up until two weeks ago (best toyshop in Britain) ,sadly it just went under ,but had i known ,i could have picked you up an entire stock box of lego plates for about £5.It's a shame i couldn't get them because i'd love to try out a huge lego board.

nic-e: Ah that's too bad. That's quite cheap for baseplates.

I just found out that a local hobby store carries another Lego-clone brand called Banbao wich also have a military theme called World Defence Force, so I simply couldn't resist:
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/IMG_5622_zps964f889b.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/IMG_5622_zps964f889b.jpg.html)

It's quite a large tank (here compared to the big Cobi Tank):

It's a very nice set, but Banbao resently lost a law suit against Lego regarding minifigs. Therefore they've changed to ToBees (their new minifig) and to be honest... I'm not a fan:

Compared to a Cobi minifig (bases not included):
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/IMG_5624_zpsfc846016.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/IMG_5624_zpsfc846016.jpg.html)

The cannon on the set is also a bit too big for my liking and the "hinge" wich holds it is not quite strong enough. It has a Brown treasure chest for stowage on the top of the turret wich also seems a bit strange.

Fortunately I have a lot of spare Lego and Cobi, so with a a few changes it's actually a very nice tank:
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/Banbao2_zps0a68768e.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/Banbao2_zps0a68768e.jpg.html)

@Bravo Six: Yep that AA-truck is also high on my got-to-get-it list. Actually I just won an auction on this:

But I'm getting the truck too at some point. :-)

Is the helicopter from Sluban too or is it Oxford? Oxford is quite expensive, but very high quality.

I'm personally thinking, that the Banbao model here could be very fine with a few add-ons and other minifigs:

Ah yes. The Oxford set is very nice and comes with a load of missiles for the side sponsons. Nice dark green colour too.

But quite expensive.

I really wanted to use the Big Banbao cannon from the tank set, so I created this Coastal Defence Bunker for it:

Thanks. :)

I'm currently working on a road, that will be 6 feet long when it's finished.

My new infantry just arrived yesterday and there was a lot of spare bricks for the Little aircrafts. I just bought the sets for the minifigs, but I wanted to try and use the spare bricks for something usefull. I came up with this:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/EnlArt2_zpse69e7b54.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/EnlArt2_zpse69e7b54.jpg.html)

I've added som Lego from my Collection, but they're mainly made of the spares.

My most resent additions:

Only 1 week to Horisont V. Now I'll have to decide on what to bring.

Tomorrow is the big day. :)

I'll be sure to add some Photos of the event.

In the meantime I've bought some models for my own interpretation of the new X-Wing game:

It's going to be awesome I think. :)

Two battle ready fighters (Academy Pilot TIE Fighter and Green Squadron A-Wing):

The coloured cones indicate attack, defence, hits, shields and pilot skill. The grey tiles with the stickers are skills.

These are control sheets to move your ships. These will replace the circle dial (X-wing on the left and TIE Fighter on the Right):

I've also added considerably to my Collection, so I can get some good size games in:

Amazing still.

I really enjoyed our game too.

Will the next one be a floor game?

Thanks.

Well I guess the Lego X-Wing game is a bit too big for table-top, but I'll try to squeze smaller games onto two 6'x4' tables and see how it goes.

I've "converted" one of my TIE Interceptors into a Royal Guard TIE Interceptor:

I wish I'd had time to join the good doctor in a game with your toys. So when we come along with the Third Crusade game, you must let us 'fly' some of these beauties  :D

@Aly: Thanks. I thankfully have a loving and understanding wife and a rather big house, so I have a spare room for all my gaming stuff. And we also have a workshop (60 m2) wich sports six 6'x4' gaming tables.

I'm really Lucky that way. :)

@Janner: Yep. I'll be sure to invite you both for a session of reckless flying with TIE Fighters and X-Wings. I'm also looking forward to playing your beautyfull crusader models. :)

Since last I've been busy cutting out movement rulers, so they fit the large Lego ships:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/MovementRulers_zps5677ea31.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/MovementRulers_zps5677ea31.jpg.html)

And I've thought of a way to play on a table (well 4 tables actually), so you don't have to play on the floor:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/XWingLayout_zps807d460a.png) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/XWingLayout_zps807d460a.png.html)

The center hole (represented by the death star) can field a player, so you would be able to reach all areas of the gaming area.

I'll be sure to take Pictures and notes. :)

Right now I'm still waiting for the official X-Wing dice to appear in the mail. You could use standard D8 and a table, but it's quicker and easier with the official dice imo.

I've been working on some Lego counters for the game:

Target Lock, Focus and Evade.

Making swoosh noices, laser blasts and TIE-screams is mandatory!!  :D

I was just thinking of our aging knees regarding the floor vs. table debate.  :)

More Evade counters and a boost counter:

Miffed Imperial players must endure the Reb-helmets as TIE-helmets cost nearly double.
