My recent 40K skirmish project (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=54622.msg646511#msg646511) ended up including a few alien animals and oddballs like Gyrinx and Enslavers. I enjoyed painting them far more than I expected.
With enthusiasm for weird alien animals and plants in miniature running high at chateau cheetor I decided to make a list of the sort of sci-fi wandering monsters and biological hazards that I want for my games. Many of them come from the Rogue Trader bestiary but there are a few others from other sources too.
I dont feel locked into the RT stuff, buts its as good a place as any to start. The list details are HERE (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/alien-flora-fauna-project-2/).
This is a long term project with plans to add things here and there for a while, so it wont be finished any time soon. I do hope to make steady progress through the list though. The bold titles link back to my blog entries on each of the creatures/plants.
The first entry is this CATACHAN DEVIL (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2013/10/02/catachan-devil/) (a very quickly painted Reaper Bones Ice Wyrm)
I painted it to match the Necromunda Milliasaurs (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2011/05/30/camping-with-bugs/) that I painted a few years ago. Those smaller guys will hopefully feature as its young in a future game.
Next is a CTHELLEAN CUDBEAR (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2013/10/09/cthellean-cudbear/) (a SotTR Urzine Were Bear)
The model is hard to photograph due to its pose, but it does actually have a face, as shown here:
The model is roughly ogre sized.
The next thing that I got finished was a suitable pack of middle sized predators, which will serve as proxy DEATH FERRETS (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2013/10/28/death-ferrets/) (Splintered Light 15mm Dire Hyeneae, plus a Reaper ferret familiar:
I finished off a herd of 24 DUNGERS (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2013/10/29/dunger-herd-part-1/)(from Ramshackle Games) over the weekend. Although they are not a perfect visual match for RT grox, they will serve a similar role in my games.
For the sake of completeness I am going to include a couple of shots of the figures from the other projects that directly led to this one. You may have seen some of these before though:
ENSLAVERS: (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2013/09/14/more-brain-aliens/)
GYRINX: (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/?s=gyrinx)
GIANT RATS (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2011/05/23/giant-rat-swarm/)
And finally some of the beasts frolicking in their natural environment, Discovery channel style:
I find it to be a bit of an odd diversion from painting yet more spacemen with guns to be honest, but painting these has been surprisingly rewarding, so expect some more additions as the months go by. I am looking forward to getting some hostile plants done in particular.

very nice! i like the cudbear! i will be borrowing that idea, have you got an ambull?
-
That's a great collection and some rather suitable proxies :-*
cheers

No :'(
Some day...

Nifty stuff. You should pick up some of the old Vor Growlers. They would fit right in.
-
Very cool stuff!

Excellent work paul. ;D

As a friend once said, what Orks SHOULD have been.
I remember multiplayer RT Deathworld games where you COULD shoot at opponents, but you were usually too busy shooting the locals. I remember the fellow running it used to bemoan how no one would pay for sensor/tricorder/thingy (really don't recall what they were called at the time; damn brain farts). So they'd be constantly 'touching' what they shouldn't. lol
Thanks SO much for sharing. Probably don't, but I'll take a look to see if I've an ambull hiding in a pile o' lead.
Doug

The aim would be to have a populated Deathworld table in the end, complete with enough hostile animals and plants to ensure that whatever bumped into will be unexpected. But the real driver for this project is that it allows me to paint all sorts of weird miniatures in all sorts of unlikely colours :)
I'll take a look to see if I've an ambull hiding in a pile o' lead.
Doug, f you have an ambull looking for a home then dont hesitate to let me know. I am pretty certain that we could come to some sort of arrangement and I will get it painted and up here within three days of receipt, guaranteed :)
And thanks for the kind words.

Thanks for the feedback everyone 8)
very nice! i like the cudbear! i will be borrowing that idea
I saw the were bear in a bargain bin at a con and a light went on in my head. Its actually quite a good match for the RT cudbear illustration, but possibly a little more alien and therefore better I think.
The Ice Wyrm isnt a perfect match for the Catachan Devil illustration either, but I think that its definitely close enough. Like the Cudbear the wyrm model is arguably better than the illustration. To me anyway.
Nifty stuff. You should pick up some of the old Vor Growlers. They would fit right in.
Thats not a bad idea at all actually and I have been looking for an excuse to get a few growlers for years. Ahem.
My only reservation is that the growlers look a bit Muppet Show. Obviously with the inclusion of the Dungers Im not averse to a bit of goofy monster silliness, but a load of growlers in conjunction with the rest might be a step to far.
Ah, who am I kidding. Im off to the bazaar to beg for growlers :D
-
This is great, I need to get so many of the miniatures here. Just brilliant.
-
Absolutey perfect! I really need to paint my Dungers. o_o
-
Great stuff all over!!!
Personally I don't like the were bear model, put the paintjob is great... I think it is because the pose often make it look like the head is a thick worm with a mouth and no face... I guess it doesn't look so much like that, when you see it down on a table.
You really have a thing going here, the beasts and terrain goes so well together.. also with the non beast models.
About the Vor Growlers, I think they would look less like cartoon/muppet creatures after a paintjob from you, I think lot of that comes from their strange paintjobs they usually came in.
-
Wow!
Those are all really cool!
It sure makes for one f***ed up death world scenario.
-
Beautiful stuff there, love the crazy colours. Where is the Alf mini from?
-
Wow! This is just awesome stuff man! LOVE that Catachan Devil. Perfect mini for the Devil.
-
Brilliant stuff, very inspiring! Look forward to seeing the flora.
-
Thanks again for all of the feedback.

The face is a little easier to see top down, but it is an unusually worm like and alien interpretation of a werebear. I couldnt place exactly what it reminded me of while I was painting it but it finally dawned on me that the face reminds me of Mikey from Men in Black:
That alien element is actually in part what I like about the model, that it looks less like something from Earth vaguely leech-like with the peculiarly stunted head. It also looks a little bit like a wampa with the bipedal stance and those big paws.
But there is huge interpretative wiggle room for a subject like this. The universe is a very big place, with room for very many varieties of space bear.
You really have a thing going here, the beasts and terrain goes so well together.. also with the non beast models.
Thanks. My corner of the miniature universe is a pulpy, gaudy, shoddy TV set filled, man-in-a-suit monster populated place. If it looks like a miniature version of the unconvincing patch of sand where a young William Shatner would punch a blue guy in the face before making out with a green lady wearing an unconvincing wig, then I am doing something right.
About the Vor Growlers, I think they would look less like cartoon/muppet creatures after a paintjob from you, I think lot of that comes from their strange paintjobs they usually came in.
I took a look at the various types of Growler for sale (ahem) at Ral Partha Europe (http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/vor-growlers-c-55_62.html) and the Fireguts look like the ones that I would enjoy painting the most. Ral Partha Europe have a shipping promotion on now (enter "SAMHAIN" at checkout) so I indulged in a few.
Where is the Alf mini from?
Four A Miniatures. (http://www.fouraminiatures.com/page2.htm) The model is a little bit on the tall side for a Melmacian, but the character is immediately recognisable. Alf usually gets a few laughs when he shows up on the table :)
Brilliant stuff, very inspiring! Look forward to seeing the flora.
So am I. I have a lot of it already but I am still waiting on a big chunk of it from an order that I made with Armorcast last August that hasnt even shipped yet...
It will be fun stuff to paint though. When it finally gets here.
-

A sound philosophy and one which I think we can all live by.
-
Fantastic stuff there! Really love them all.
-

All except the picky Virgos... :D
Doug
-
Lovely looking monsters. I applaud your choice of inspiration. Old TV shows, rubber suit monsters and gravel pits are so much more entertaining then CGI critters in a CGI landscape moving through a big budget movie.
Now where did I put my Star Frontiers monsters? I'm feeling inspired.
-
Holy...that's some excellent brush work. Great selection of alien beasties!
-
Now where did I put my Star Frontiers monsters? I'm feeling inspired.
An excellent choice sir. Populating the Mega City 1 Alien Zoo perhaps?
That place is made for a goofy Dredd scenario.

Great idea. I hadn't thought about that. Sounds like a good place to find a dead body. :D

After a bit of a break from this project during November and most of December, I started doing some more work on it over the last month or so, primarily on plant related stuff but with a few more fauna too.
First some speed painted FERRO BEASTS (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/01/02/ferro-beasts/).
...some disappointingly soft detailed ALIEN SPACE BATS (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/01/01/alien-space-bats/) (with Judge Death soaking up the atmosphere)...
... and a little (thats a 20mm base) DRYAD FAMILIAR (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/01/02/dryad-familiar/) that seemed to fit with both the "flora" and "fauna" aspects of the project...
...which nicely segues me into the next chunk of the project, the flora.
I have been working on a lot of these in tandem as I get a lot of suitable jungle terrain bits ready and these are the first finished. I will get some group photos taken over the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime here are some close ups of some of the flora "character" pieces. More photos and other info are in the associated blog post for all of these plants (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/02/14/deathworld-jungle-1-armorcast-alien-plants/).
Firstly a SPIKER (plus a Spiker victim to the left)...
... then a few plant pod things...
...and then the obvious stars of the plant side of the show, the Venus Man-Traps...
All of these got quicker paint jobs than my non-terrain figures would get, but I made sure that they were presentable all the same.
More plants and a whole load of jungle to come over the next week or two.
-
Great ideas :)
I really like RT creatures, I had some ideas for these creatures but you did a much better job finding close proxies.
-
Wow, superb stuff really inspirational! :o
-
Bloomin' heck Paul, those are great! =)
-
Beautiful work! Love those pod plants! :-*
THANKS for sharing.
-
As the yoof would say, this whole topic is full of win :D
Great painting on a great selection of models.
-
What a wonderful collection of minis!
-
Great stuff, I must get some plants for my own projects.
-
Thanks for the encouraging feedback everyone!
The plants were good fun to paint (and I am now a lot more familiar with the lyrics from the Little Shop Of Horrors as a result).
I really like RT creatures, I had some ideas for these creatures but you did a much better job finding close proxies.
Some of the model choices were just sudden inspiration when I saw a friends model in hand (the Devil) or a model in a bargain bin (the Cudbear). The Ferro Beasts are not-Rust Monsters anyway, so that was a straightforward thing, like the not-Beholder = Enslaver.
The process gets a bit more "music inspired by the motion picture" when dealing with Death Ferrets (no official image available as far as I know, plus ferret models are thin on the ground) and things like that, but that s fine. Im looking for analogous stuff rather than exact matches really, although things that look as close to the original illustrations as the Ice Wyrm to the Devil and the SotTR werebear to Cthells greatest hug machine are a definite bonus.
Great stuff, I must get some plants for my own projects.
Armorcast didnt ship my order with the plants in it for three months. I never had that problem with orders from them before and they did respond to emails and I am happy with the product that I eventually... but its worth noting I guess.
The plant models are fun though, heavy on the pulp factor, so I would recommend them.
I have the Ramshackle mutant plants and some other similar stuff ready to photograph when I get the opportunity. They are in the same vein as the Armorcast models really, just smaller.
-
oh man - I am so stunned and envious and and it is so inspiring!
THX for sharing

I'll probably go with Ramshackle, I like Curtis' stuff even though I find it a bugger to degrease.
-
WOW :o
That armorcast stuff is just brilliant! Your painting really brings it all to life!
-
Great new additions to the collection. The armorcast pieces are very nice.Like the extra plant pieces you have added to yours.

Thanks. I have a very large pile of aquarium plants on the table in the man-cave at the moment being prepped to make an alien jungle. Those bits were added to the resin pods and traps to try to integrate those pieces in with their surroundings a bit. They also help to make the models look a little more 3D somehow, less like a series of rounded cast shapes.
WOW :o

Thanks Jonas. These pieces do have a certain prehistoric vibe that would look good with your dinos I think.
oh man - I am so stunned and envious and and it is so inspiring!

The models are a little on the pricy side, particularly including transatlantic shipping, but they are quite unique looking and satisfyingly big and impressive models, so they were worth it I think.
I'll probably go with Ramshackle, I like Curtis' stuff even though I find it a bugger to degrease.
Hmm. Other than a quick washing up liquid and warm water wash after sanding I havent had that problem with Ramshackle stuff. I Have been using Fairy Power Spray to strip miniatures recently and its great. Its intended for cleaning burnt, greasy pots. I mjiight use that on the next batch of Ramshackle resin that I clean.
Speaking of which, I hope to get some photos of the Ramshackle mutant plants up early next week, maybe tomorrow.
-
I have wanted some armorcast terrain for a long time, but the prices have been putting me off for now. I guess it will have to wait untill a day I feel rich or surf their page while drunk lol
-
Excellent realization of all these classic beasties. I really like the blue Dungers. I might steal that idea. Looks great over all.

Thanks Doomsdave, progress is good and I am happy enough with most of it.
I have nearly finished the generic space jungle (read "vividly coloured aquarium plant") portion of the Deathworld project, which is the largest element by a long way. I should have some images of that over the next few days. But today I will post up the remainder of the more interesting flora.
Firstly the technorganic terrain elements from Sedition Wars. I figured that the shapes on these would work well as part of this project, so a quick paint job later and they are part of the Deathworld.
I dont want to get into a discussion about SW here - there is plenty written about it in other places - but the short version regarding the terrain set is that its hard plastic of some sort - not restic - and its really rather high quality.
Next up is a quick refurbishing job on some Horrorclix. I didnt fully repaint these, I just rebased, ink washed and drybrushed them to tie them in with the rest of my terrain and figures a little better. The Pod Zombies will be used to represent models that have been infected with the Spiker plants invasive reproductive techniques: these guys will represent miniatures transmogrifying into plants and getting in the way. A low effort/high return sub-project :)
Lastly is this selection of Ramshackle Mutant Plants. Like almost everything in this project they have been painted more quickly than I would paint a normal 28mm figure, but I like how they turned out. Ramshackle figures are fun to paint quickly.
Thats the last of the more interesting jungle plants finished for now, but I should have photos of the large quantity of aquarium plant jungle photographed over the next couple of days. In the meantime the blog posts about the bits above with more photos and discussion are HERE (Horrorclix) (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/02/17/deathworld-jungle-2-refurbished-planimals/) and HERE (Ramshackle and Sedition Wars) (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/02/18/deathworld-jungle-3-ramshackle-mutant-plants/).
Comments and criticisms all welcome of course.

Oh yeah! This is just so great!!!!
Please take some photos of your complete flora and fauna soon :-* :-* :-* :-*
I am following the blog already, so I already saw most of this, but my jaw still drops each time I see your stuff!!!
o_o AWESOME!
-
Thanks for the enthusiastic encouragement Jonas :)
I tried taking some group shots last night as I have the aquarium plant space jungle elements finished. I think that I have been staring at the lurid vegetation for too long to be able to see it objectively now though. I want to table to look vague likely like the Star Wars planet "Felucia", but at this stage I am afraid it might have ended up like a Playmobil desert island set with regurgitated Skittles all over it.
Anyway, photos of the table to follow later, maybe today.

:o :o :o
Oh, my giddy aunt!!!
There is so much goodness in this thread it should be banned!
Far too good.
:-* :-* :-*
I HAVE to get loads of those plants, so many uses.
I have a couple of bits that you have but some of these are 'must haves'
Thanks for the heads up, cheetor!
:D :D :D
Have you considered these lovely little critturs, Vardu Sprouts from Hydra Miniatures:

And some more here with one of those Horrorclix thingies on the base.

Cant believe I missed this thread, lots of inspiration. Keep up with the good ideas.

Thanks for the encouragement folks :)
Have you considered these lovely little critturs, Vardu Sprouts from Hydra Miniatures:
I have considered the Vardu, but have yet to get around to picking some up. Its probably just a matter of time though...
Meanwhile, I have finished the rather time consuming task of prepping the fifty or so bases of foliage to bulk out my jungle with. I am sick of the sight of plastic aquarium plants at this stage, so I find it hard to be objective, but I think that the space jungle part of this project has been a success. A gaudy, somewhat H.R. Puffinstuff flashback inducing success, but a success nonetheless.

Comments and criticisms welcomed even more than usual. I literally cannot see the wood for the trees after a couple of weeks working on this stuff.

Wow :o what a cool project. Do you have the links where you bought the palm trees and the others plants :D.
Cheers,

fab looking table :-*
-
I'm absolutely loving this stuff. So much so that on a family trip out to the garden centre/ coffee shop, I went straight to the aquatic section and checked out the plants! (Although they seem to be cheaper online!) brilliant stuff. Keep it coming.
-
Very cool table! :o :o
-
Your table is second to none. Absolutely inspirational!! Too bad you didn't live in my corner of the world. I would love to have a game with you on that table using that terrain and those figures. Thanks for sharing!!

Bloody gorgeous!

Proper retro-looking for that perfect RT look.

It makes me want to do mine.
I have enough palm trees and aquarium plants but I do need more 'feature' plants and you have provided a wonderful list of what's out there.
Cheers!
:D

That table is awesome. Just awesome.
RT FTW! ;D
-
Not bad! :D
-
Thanks for the kind words guys. It all helps to when motoring through the projects :)
Wow :o what a cool project. Do you have the links where you bought the palm trees and the others plants :D.
Sure, all from Ebay.
The palm trees came from the Ebay seller "everestmodel". I bought one pack of "TDT13 20pcs Layout Model Train Palm Trees Scale HO 13CM", one pack of "TDT18 20pcs Layout Model Train Palm Trees Scale O 18cm" and one pack of "TDZ3 40pcs Layout Model Train Palm Trees Scale HO N 3CM" from him.
Most of the red plants came from Ebay seller "144mph", 2 x "Plastic Aquarium Multicolor Plants Fish Tank Grass Landscape 10pc MPH".
The most interesting range of coloured plants came from Ebay seller "ouyou2010", 5 x "Lot 10pcs Plastic Aquarium Multicolor Plants Fish Tank Grass Ornament Landscape".
A few bits and pieces that had knocking around were added too, but the amount listed above gave me the coverage shown.
(Although they seem to be cheaper online!)
Definitely far cheaper online than in the local pet shops and the like. I found that the local places didnt really stock many aquarium plants in exotic colours either, so it had to be online purchasing anyway for me.
brilliant stuff. Keep it coming.
Thanks. This project isnt finished by a long way, but the plant and jungle aspect is for now. I do have a large menagerie of unpainted wildlife ready to be added to the jungle yet though, Miral Land Sharks, Face-Eaters, Growlers, weird things that dont really have proper names yet... loads.
Too bad you didn't live in my corner of the world. I would love to have a game with you on that table using that terrain and those figures.
Never say never Hitman, it could happen.
Proper retro-looking for that perfect RT look.
8)
Definitely retro, although more retro than eighties RT stuff yused to look in some respects I reckon. I think that it looks more Forbidden Planet or Star Trek or Lost in Space, kinda Technicolour :)
It makes me want to do mine.

The palm trees and aquarium plants were the toughest bit to work on actually, the most dull. The "hero" plants were more interesting although if I am honest, it really was quite a big job. I am glad to be finished it for a while.
-
The palm trees and aquarium plants were the toughest bit to work on actually, the most dull.
why?
I am asking because I have a lot of plastic plants too
-
Bloody fantastic!
-
why?
I am asking because I have a lot of plastic plants too
I wasnt clear, sorry.
It was the worst part of the process because it was dull. Basing a handful of miniature bases is tedious, but basing ~50 of those was something that I had to firce myself to do.
Glueing the plant parts to bases was very repetitive too and while a hot glue gun is a great tool, the process took longer than I expected.
So it was the worst part of the process because I am impatient.

I understand

but the result justifies it in this case :)

I need to break my aquarium plants out of storage. Smashing good work.

A fine selection of colourful and potentially lethal plantlife.
I am impressed by the paintwork on the deathworld plants, especially considering the speed whith which you seem to be knocking them out.

I have been chipping away at this project since I put the jungle together in February and have manged three very D.I.Y. efforts to cover three more items on the ever expanding list of weird things. Links to the associated blog posts are in the bold caps title for each entry. The blog posts have more info and pictures if you are interested.
First its CARNIVOROUS SAND CLAMS (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/06/18/bouncers/).

A Rogue Trader staple, these are underground ambush predators. Keeping things simple, I picked up some shells from a local beach, glued them to bases and gave them a very rudimentary paint job. Its rough and ready (and more than a bit goofy), but its fits the theme.
-------------------------------------------------
Next some NECROMUNDAN SPINE CRYSTALS/KRYPTONITE/PERILIUM/WARPSTONE (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/05/09/kryptoniteperilium/)
These are real crystals that a guy I know bought somewhere ( I dont know where crystals are for sale, but they are apparently). I glued them to bases and painted Tamiya Clear Green over them. Again, very straightforward.

-------------------------------------------------
Lastly for now a piece of classic old goofy Rogue Trader nonsense, BOUNCERS (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/06/18/bouncers/)

Ping pong balls, bases and that heat sensitive stuff for making patterns on kids t-shirts and...

More Fauna next time I think. I got some new things for this project recently that I am dying to paint.
Comments and criticisms all welcome :)

More crazy, goofy RT-inspired weirdness.
Love 'em all!

Wow, so much inspiration in this thread!
Love it! :-*
Canīt wait for the upcoming new fauna.

Thanks for the feedback folks :)
A small but satisfying contribution today, the often referenced but rarely realised in miniature...
RIPPY-FISH (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/08/29/rippy-fish/)
The models are Fish Swarms from CP Models (http://www.cpmodelsminiatures.co.uk/Creature%20Swarms.htm) and cute little things they are too.

You are managing this fauna project outstandingly well :-*

What a veritable treasure trove of fabulous stuff!
Hats off, splendid work...

Thats it!
I am officially 'borrowing' all of these ideas for when I do my Pulp jungle terrain next year.
There you go, I have confessed.... ::)

They are pretty cheap, I picked one up last week from the local store

Thanks guys, the feedback is always apprciated.
The fish are only a small entry in the project but as my output has slumped a bit recently, I thought that a small, fun and rapidly turned around Fauna project would be just the ticket. Painting those was rapid and satisfying.

Very kind, thanks. Most of the folks on the forum have an interest in jungle tables I think and surely all sci-fi fans have an interest in a Deathworld jungle. Not very many folks seem to get around to it though, so I think that people get an extra vicarious kick out of this project.

Thanks.
Im afraid that I havent had the pleasure of seeing Piranha 3D. I had planned to go, but an opportunity to jam my nuts in a filing cabinet drawer came along, so I did that instead ;) lol
You are managing this fauna project outstandingly well :-*
It trundles along in bursts here and there and I find it enjoyable, so I will stick at it for quite a while yet I suspect. I have quite a few elements done now, so rather than search for specific models I just keep my eye out for things and pick them up in passing. The Rippy-fish are a good example of that.

Thanks. The Ice Wyrm was one of those sudden flash of inspiration moments. I have yet to see a better model for use as a Catachan Devil.

Help yourself. I am certain that I will end up pilfering some of your ideas when you get stuck in :)

It's always interesting to see what you're adding to this thread. A cornucopia of inspiration, if ever there was one!
BTW, did you pimp your pegasus river? I bought a set earlier this year but I haven't really sat down to look at it. At first glance, it looked a little bland. In particular, the naked plastic banks are a little grating next to my golf green like gaming surface. I've been thinking about doing the edges up like I do my bases. Don't want to add reeds or anything, I enjoy being able to store them in a pile.

Thanks! I have an urge to paint the Ambull tonight. Im nervous, its like a blind date.
BTW, did you pimp your pegasus river?
Nope, straight out of the box as is. The painting on the water is a bit rough in places (the scratchy drybrushing done at the factory is visible in the shot above) but its more than adequate for gaming with as supplied. The brown banks look pretty appropriate on my Zuzzy mat, but thats largely just luck. If I had an eighteenth hole like terrain set then I would at least drybrush the brown bits out towards the edge in a suitable colour to blend it in a bit.
Reeds and things are cool for sure, but storage is a big deal for me. There isnt any point making/painting/buying something if you cant store it.

Inspired by some discussion about this project, yesterday I decided to tackle the Ambull that I picked up earlier this year.
The Ambull is something of a poster boy for the Rogue Trader Deathworld (along with the Catachan Devil and the Cthellean Cudbear) so it was enjoyable to finally get around to painting the funny looking old thing.

I was already jealous of your paintings. Seeing that ambull I now hate you. :D
Is the terrain Battle Systems stuff? We bought a ton with the buddies at the club. Looks like it will take us some time to assemble it tho. Was it easy for you?
-
:o :o :o
You have gone and raised the bar again with that paintjob.
That is officially the best Ambull I have seen to date.
:-* :-* :-*
And one of my favourite RT figures too.

Great work on that old mini man! Still cool to see how good that sculpt is if you consider its age.
-
Amazing! :D
-
I always loved that model, but I got rid of the 3 I had when I realized I had yet to finish painting even one (in almost 20 years). Beautiful job on this one, by the way.
-
Great job on the Ambull.
I had two of them, long ago... :(
-
Nice work. I love the photos with the eldar and the orks. :)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The subject is always going to be quite fondly regarded by a certain age profile. I did really get a kick out of finally getting an ambull painted.

No sweat PF. Your beautiful sculpting means that I hate you a great deal more ;) lol

It is of course significantly less time consuming than building those things from scratch, but it still takes time. Its like a load of flat pack Ikea furniture: none of the process stages are particularly difficult, but it does take time.
That is officially the best Ambull I have seen to date.
Thats very flattering Mason, thanks, although I am certain that there are many Ambulls out there painted to a much higher technical standard. That said, a lot of ambulls are painted in quite a dull brown, which is bit uninspiring. Another thing about painted ambulls is that people seem to paint certain textures on the sculpt pretty randomly, so they look a bit incoherent to me.
I tried to make sure that there was decent contrast on the tough, shell/chitin parts rather than a fairly flat colour, like a scuffed tortoise shell or similar, deliberately slightly chalky.
I also tried to follow through on the treatment of each of the "meatier" parts of the model. A lot of ambulls look like they are covered in a turtle like shell with two tubes perched on top. I tried to integrate the tubes into the look of the softer parts of the model a bit (and there was a bit of fudging where I wasnt sure what was what). It makes the model design make more visual sense to me.
Nice work. I love the photos with the eldar and the orks. :)
Thanks. Im not great at those sorts of shots (or miniature photography in general) but I do enjoy trying to pose the little guys.

Lovely work on the Ambul... in fact... lovely work on the whole lot (that Ice Wyrm / Catachan Devil is the dogs danglies... awesome :) ) :-*
This is a thread that I visit a lot. You just never know what will turn up!

that Ice Wyrm / Catachan Devil is the dogs danglies... awesome :) ) :-*
The Wyrm was painted to much lower standard than most of the other models, partly because I didnt want to get too bogged down in painting a large and wobbly Bones miniature, but mainly because I knew that I could get a pretty decent, vaguely cockroach like effect on the model nice and quickly, so I did. Its a cool and quite imposing model and it fits the concept of the devil rather well. Im quite fond of it :)
This is a thread that I visit a lot. You just never know what will turn up!
The topic gives a surprising amount of freedom. It also works well as small projects to work on here and there to experiment on (like the Wyrm/Devil) and break up some of the more production line elements of getting larger forces ready for gaming.
-
Great work again!
That reminds me I should have an unopened Ambull blister somewhere...
-
Lovely. I've been holding off painting my Ambul for a while but might have to dig it out. :)

:-* :-* :-*
Arh man, there is just too much good stuff on here now. The school of rippy fish is my new favourite!

It has been a while since I worked on this project, but its definitely not forgotten. A tiny but characterful addition today in the form of the PTERA-SQUIRREL (https://sho3box.wordpress.com/2015/03/19/ptera-squirrel/).

Its based on a quite Pythonesque entry from the Rogue Trader rulebook. There are more details and photos in the associated blog post (https://sho3box.wordpress.com/2015/03/19/ptera-squirrel/).

Top stuff. :D
-
Thanks folks. Its a little indulgent and possibly a bit puerile in its gore heavy presentation, but Im certain that it will generate a few laughs in game. Thats the entire point as far as I am concerned :)
So cute, so very blood-thirsty. :-*
I finished it late last night and forgot to add the spray of meadow flowers for an extra jarring, heavy handed bit of juxtaposition with the gore drenched head, but I forgot. I will have to remedy that this evening.
How cute! I assume he will be a Terror for Pulp Alley? :D
lol I had it pencilled in as a mere peril, but I was pedestrian in my thinking. You are in fact entirely correct Malebolgia, a Terror he is and a Terror he most certainly will be :)

Brilliant!

Ya mad bugger!

Great idea, and I especially love that last photo.
-
Brilliant! I love the old Rogue Trader bestiary, great to see you tackle finding/making models for it. And painting them up so nice to boot. :-*
-
Superb ideas as ever!
-
*whew*
Hadn't checked back in quite awhile, but reading how I was supposed to be looking for an ambull... :o
Actually, I did look at the time, and have had several trips searching in the basement for other things, serendipity being the most reliable search method, and still never found one.
Delighted you did!
So much awesomeness in the interim, I must say. What RT players fear to call a target rich environment.
My recollection of ambulls are they are ambush preds, right? Pop out of the ground? Maybe have a small crater to represent that?

Knowing of my interest in 28mm wildlife, the proprietor of Krakon Games (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1328919671/sci-fi-frills-and-fauna-miniatures) sent me this pre-release set of "Cirripods", which will be excellent for use as Rogue Trader "Bouncers", themselves a riff on the alien in the 1970s John Carpenter movie Dark Star.
I painted the satisfyingly heavy texture on the models quickly over the last night or two. One more bizarre entry in the project ticked off the list :)
