I'm considering getting into one of these Blood Bowl or Elfball.
I played BB years ago, 1990s, and haven't tried EB.
which do people prefer and why

The latest Bloodbowl on (gasp) the computer is freakin' marvelous. Still not an amazing game, but it's nice to buy it for cheap and receive all the teams, run custom campaigns etc. It started out as a train wreck but they improved it vastly. :)
So if you buy Elfball you can pick up a cheap PC copy of Bloodbowl.

I have tried playing blood bown several times on PC (never played tabletop version) I could never get the hang of it.

They are two COMPLETELY different games.
I own both and had some games of ELFBALL but did'n quite made "click".
But you can be assured that ALL teams in EB are well balanced, unlike BB.
BLOOD BOWL, I played A LOT of games and always had fun (and have 20+ complete teams).
The strangest and bizarre thing happen during a BB game.
Now, you have to be aware that for MANY years, the guy leading the "BB Living Rulebook" was TOM ANDERS (owner of IMPACT MINIATURES) and he's also the responsible of ELFBALL, so any of that games may be of your liking, AND since GW kicked all the "BB Living Rulebook" crew -Including Tom-, and apparently is cutting all "Specialist Games", you may find difficult to grasp "official" rules updates and/or miniatures for the game.
Of course, there are TONS of alternatives available, and I recommend Impact Miniatures http://www.impactminiatures.net/index.php?option=home as they carry most of the lines and Tom Anders is a very nice guy and brings top service to customers.
Hope that helps.

Never played Elfball. BB has the advantage of free rules and a devoted global community.

I play and enjoy both games very much.
Bloodbowl is great, especially over a league - the satisfaction and enjoyment of building a team and seeing them develop, grudge matches against other players in the league etc. Elfball is, I think, a better game, in that it is more balanced and requires a more chess-like mentality - you only get to move one player in a turn - making it less prone to a one-sided game arising from dice-roll disasters.
If you can afford it, and have the time or energy, get both! :D
-
Just to clarify - the Elfball rules are also free.
I play both, but Elfball is definitely more balanced. It depends what sort of game you want really. Both are fun, but tactics like cages unbalanced teams took some of the fun from Blood Bowl away from me and I play more Elfball now. The nice thing is that the figures for both games can be used interchangeably. So if you invest in figures for one, you invest in them for the other as well. ;)
Cheers,
Ben.

Ill always be partial to Blood Bowl. My only complaint is that the games can run REALLY long, even with veteran players.
Have you looked into Dreadball by Mantic? Similar concept with only 6 minis on the table, and faster moving.

On the fantasy side of table sports, there is also TUTATIS, 15mm gaelic fantasy football. And helvetia Cup, a fantasy soccer game.
