I just finished off my first viking, the great Northern Warlord, Erik the Blond....
As always, comments and suggestions are most welcome!
-
More!
-
Very nice, I guess I have to start painting up my Irish lol
Cheers,
Za
-
You have the rules now, and well, the Vikings ARE on their way....lol
I was also able to put together a small village, 3 houses, a manor and then some fields, pond and a small stream to run alongside. I'll make a well myself and then get a few animals and serfs. Maybe when we meet you can bring some of your pigs. My Vikings will need a meal after the slaughter... :)
Did I ever mention to you guys that the name 'Peter' sounds rather Welshish to me? Hmm... Or perhaps from northern France...
-
Nice work, TBC.

I have just started a SAGA force myself and will be posting my efforts on the Fantasy board shortly.
I had better warn you that it is highly addictive.
But you probably already know that!
:D
-
Very nice brushwork!
-
Thanks Mates! I'm quite happy with how he came out! I've got 4 Hirthguard already with their basecoats almost finished. Vikings are quite fun to paint!
-
Just opened my box of Irish... I will probably paint the dogs first. I still hate you for this lol lol
-
.... I still hate you for this lol lol
I could say the same to you, as I am eyeing up some cowboys to get that long-threatened OW project on its way soon too.

I think the very same thing every time I catch my half painted cowboy gang looking at me from the mantle wondering when it's their turn next...
-
That's a mighty fine looking Viking! :D
I'm still undecided on which force I want to do but I've narrowed it down to two, so I'm getting closer. ;)
-
Cheers! What are you thinking about?
I'm starting to collect a bit of terrain, and at least as far as animals go, we can recycle some stuff from the OW games!
I also bought the Revell Longship, it'll be with me when I get back from the holidays! :)
-
At the moment it's either Anglo-Danes or Normans. But it might change into something completely different. ???
-
Nice!
I'm almost ready with my SAGA Vikings and after that I will be making some terrain pieces (and start a Anglo-Danish warband).
Next week is a SAGA tournement in Zwolle; "For King and Country II".

My first group of Hirdmen.

Very nice TBC, wonderful skin tones :o. I opened my box again yesterday and that is as far as I came with my Irish (O I also closed the box again :`)
Cheers,
Za

I'm VERY happy with the set I bought! I also played with that foamstuff I bought for us and made a small village well with it and the ring from a scotch tape roll.
I still think you can bang out 4 pts for January! I have faith in you! :)
I'm also very happy with the skin tone set I bought at Crisis!
-
My Wolf Berzerkers are done before my month long holiday in the States! I've got more than half of one of the 2 warrior units done, so 1 more warrior and 2 more hirdman and I'm done! :)
Without further adieu

They're both Acheson Creations, they make great stuff at very reasonable prices. The 'ivy' is a mold I have for Grenstuff from Happy Seppuku.

Got a couple of barns and houses left along with fences, folk and animals, then the last point for my SAGA force. My mates and I have a battle date set for the middle of March! :D

Lovely minatures and terrain but those wolf skins are top class!
:)

That's a good looking little village. :) Is the lake one of the famous Bo Lochs?

Cheers! To be fair, I stole the technique from Dr. Viking's SSS project and his wolves. I'm quite pleased with the result and the technique was very easy!

How did you know! The Wyr Skruuders hide in their Bo Lochs when afraid!
-
Just a quick update, I painted up a warrior point, I'll take pics of them later and post them, and finished some more buildings for the Village of Wyr Skruude. They're all Acheson Creations. I used some green stuff to jazz them up a bit and make them look a little different.

All the 'little extras' certainly pimp it up and take it to the next level.
Nicely done!

Cheers Mate!
Aside from what I took pictures of I still have another large house and a small barn, as well as some stone fence sections. I bought some woven kitchen placemats, I'll use those to make wicker fencing. I'm VERY tempted to buy that Wicker Man from Ainsy...

What, including some to live in the wicker man, even?o_o
Lovely work - I might try the idea of adding ivy up the walls at the construction stage myself on the next suitable building. That looks very good indeed.
-
Thanks Mitch! The buildings themselves are great. Very little cleanup. The ONLY thing that bothered me was that the small house has a lip to keep the roof on the main block of the house, but none of the other buildings do. Not sure why they omitted them, but they did.... I used some plastic strip to recreate the mechanism, so they work fine now.
The ivy is from a Happy Seppuku 'swamp' stamp. i just keep reusing the same stamp over and over, cutting them up and shaping them while they're still a bit soft. I think it's enough to conceal they're all from the same source. if you REALLY look you can figure it out, but who has that kind of time?? :D For me it was a great way to conceal the identical buildings and give a bit more variety. There's only SO much you can do before they look overdone, but working with the putty is easy enough to make corrections. The green also adds a great contrast to all of the earth tones!
Thanks for the positive feedback!
-
Greate painted minis and very nice buildings !
Will be nteresting to follow you project !
best regards Michael

Lovely, TBC, just lovely!
:-* :-*
I saw the previous unit and forgot to say at the time that you have given me the kick up the arse that I needed to get my first LotR SAGA unit finished.
The Warriors of Gondor were finished today, they just need basing and shields painting.
Thanks for the nudge!

Cheers Mason! I have t admit, Vikings are so much fun to paint! And the arse kicking works both ways! You guys are all a HUGE inspiration!
I must admit, the hand painted shields I did for the warriors came out well. For a moment or two I almost forgot which ones were decals and which were painted. That made me feel all warm inside!
BTW, BIG fan of your LOTR project!

My new warlord for my Viking force, Tor Eriksen and his wolf Fenris, a freebie sent to me by the Foundry when I ordered from one of their modern lines. I liked it so much I paired it with a wolf from Silent Invader's Scavenge, Skirmish and Survive line. I saw the pic of him on the Foundry site just to get an idea how they pained him and I'm quite pleased that I went for polar bears as the cloak. I was playing around with one polar bear and one black bear, but then I thought it would look too fantasy...

Thanks so much! He was a real joy to paint up... and was rather effective today as well. It seems the Vikings and Turks showed up at Wyr Skruude coincidentally at the same time for some raiding. After Tor took the Turk's head, the Irish warlord was undone by Tor's Hirdmen. It was a glorious day for the Thunder God! :D
Goofed around learning the rules today with Za Zjurman and Groove51 and it was unanimously a fun game to play, losses aside :)

Bloody gorgeous all round, sir!
:-* :-*
Love that figure, it makes a top drawer Warlord.
Nice doggie too.

Excellent Erik 8)
That's a great PJ all round but I have a special liking for the wolf! :-*
-
Thanks for all the nice comments guys! He's my favorite mini in the set so far, and the fact that he has Fenris at his side, I think I'll write up a short 'Special Character' for him to house rule. :D
Now onto the last 2 points! Then Normans and Anglo-Danes. (Which its the other nice thing about SAGA, I'll need to paint a more or less full 6 points for the Normans, but as to the Anglo-Danes, I'll just paint up a new Warlord and some Hirdmen. The Warriors and Levy can be used from the Viking set! :D

Great looking group! Especially the bases are very well done!
Thanks for the compliments!
The bases are very easy to do.
1) Brown base
2) Dry brush a Middle Brown and then with the brush wet start using an Ivory. The exact colors for these first two steps dont matter much, just as long as they are pleasing, contrast well with each other and you use them consistently for all the bases.
3) Superglue some GF9 Summer Flock in patches but covering most of the base, this gives a nice 'mossy' look
4) Smaller patches of Summer static grass to mimic patches of longer grass
5) Just add a few pleasing tufts, bushes, etc and any other artifacts that make sense.
It's SUPER easy, but I think the real trick is to use flock and static grass together and of a slightly different shade.
Oh, and I use this for the static grass:

I decided that since Robert's army is Irish, that I'd place the Village of Wyr Skruud on the Green Isle. I goggled Irish snakes and they had this beautiful bright green one... And of course the gratuitous dead soldier and horse....
The top two boards are made with Woodland Scenics rock molds. The putty was a 5 min gray that was SUPER hard and kept great detail. I find this mold to be a great way to test different types of putty. I'll buy more of this stuff, cheap and very good detail!
I have two more forest boards to make and just the last three buildings to paint up.

LOVELY STUFF! You have been a busy boy, haven't you?
I was thinking I needed to revamp some of my terrain pieces - now I know I do!
-
Thanks Mitch! :D
This was also a test ground for my new stamps from Happy Seppeku. So the same stamp that I used for the ivy on my houses, has a mold for a bunch of tree roots and stumps. So I wait until the greenstuff JUST sets and then mold it around the plastic tubing I use as tree bases. The trees I bought on ebay from china, I like the wire and foam jobbies.
The skeleton is from the Pirate stamp along with the horse head and the spear and shield are GB. The snake comes from the Swamp stamp with the roots and ivy.
All in all, very happy with how they came out and I think 4 boards should be more than enough.

A small conversion using the Anglo Saxon Thegn boxset from GB. Strangely enough it does not come with the double handed axes and I didnt want to buy the Viking set just for them.

Ah, just noticed something... If you see the slinger on the far left, and his sling looking a bit 'stubby'.... I set there on my mantle at night to dry over the stove turned full blast....well you get the picture. So warm enough to shrinky dink them but not enough to melt.... I like it. They stay!
-
I have missed a few updates, TBC....many apologies as they are all top drawer.
:-* :-* :-*
Excellent additions, a great axe conversion ( 8) ) and that mat will look just great.
As for that slinger....a 'training sling' perhaps.
;)

Cheers Mason!
My mom made me wear a training sling when I was younger, come to think of it so did the first Mrs TBC... I also noticed a few guys suffer from 'limp sling'.... lol

We had a meeting at the local Amsterdam game club, 6 Shooters.
Wanted to share some pics of our SAGA game, Anglo-Saxon, meets, Anglo-Dane, meets Viking in the village of Wyr Skruude

The setup was poor for a 3-man game, the scenario begins with all players in corners, but this invariably has one person in the middle. What ended up happening is that I was int he middle, ran to the Anglo-Danes, fought with them and the poor Anglo-Saxon player spent the game chasing us. The terrain being in the middle of the table did not help things for the Saxon player, it just become obstacles to even getting close enough for missile fire....

Hairy legs at the last picture of the slingers! :D

Cheers for the complements! Not so much hairy legs as heavy dark wash :P
It's a really nice club. The meeting place is very nice, and about 2 streets away from my flat which is super convenient! Nice group of guys and some ladies and a huge variety of things to play. Yesterday there was Hail Caesar, SAGA, WHFB, x-wing and a few board games and bookshelf varieties as well.

Really like that conversion with the great axe. Nice work :)
Thanks Capt! I thought it would be more involved, but once I was able to drill through the GB hand without a problem, it practically solved itself! :D
-
Ok, got another Dane Ax Huscarl done. The plastic Thegns are really easy to convert.

That sounds like a nice group! It's hard to keep that much variety active in a club.

To be honest, I think there was such a need locally for this type of a thing, that people have become quite hungry to meet and game. In fact, while it's officially a once-monthly club, we're already opening up a second day each month to make it biweekly. I'm thrilled. And I have to say, the location is great. We have a nice bar, small kitchen, the drinks and such are subsidized and the snacks are part of the entrance fee. 2 euros goes a loong way :D
I'm well on my way to making my force good for dual roles, Anglo-Danish and Viking, to give me more variety at play. Seems like lots of folks are eager to play SAGA.
-
I was able to get the first point of Huscarls with Dane Axes done. The GB plastic set is very easy to work with. But there were a couple of pits in the castings, which is surprising, I thought Rendera was a first grade caster.... No worries, still plenty of parts to use.
So here first are the last two Huscarls alone. I still need to green stuff some fingers on the one on the right for his right hand. But the glue needs to dry first.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/eaodak/SAGAASHuscarlDaneAxCampD01_zps7b96c43b.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/eaodak/media/SAGAASHuscarlDaneAxCampD01_zps7b96c43b.jpg.html)
And this is the entire first point together, and I started to paint one for a test scheme.

Brilliant, mate.
:-* 8) :-*
I have some of those plastics and am really looking forward to working with them.
Even more so after seeing what you are doing with them.
:D
-
Excellent conversions. If I didn't already have my dane axe armed Huscarls from Gripping Beast I would have followed your example. However my SAGA gaming partner has just got some plastic Saxons, so I shall be showing him your work.
-
Thanks for the kind words guys! As I said, they were SUPER easy to do!

My advice to your friend would be to drill holes in the hands of the arms first, I use a straight pin to get a center point. Then I glue the arms on, wait 12 hours. I cut the hands on the figure. I think it's much easier to see where the correct cut should be . I made the mistake and cut one hand before gluing it on. With a little work I could have salvaged it, but I pried off the arm and replaced it with a new one. Then cut once dry and got it right. So far I havent had to do too much extra work to get it straight. It also helps to super glue one hand on the ax shaft before plastic gluing the other. That's really all there was to it. The mini's themselves are really nice, and I've never had any prejudice against plastics. I'm no expert by any measure, but with a decent paint job I think they look great on the table. I've been happy at least :D.
-
Those Dane Axe Huscarl conversions are amazing! :-*
It just goes to show how much can be done with plastics. Very nice painting as well!
-
Thanks for the kind words guys! As I said, they were SUPER easy to do!
Easy to use, super versatile (even more if you mix between sets!) and in your hands, fantastically effective. If GB want some free advertising, direct 'em to this thread!
-
Thanks guys, but I must confess that it was more serendipity than anything else. I had a whole bunch of WFB hands, that are too big, all lined up to replace the GB ones. Only at the last moment I thought to try drilling the GB hands. But I think the real trick is cutting the arms after being glued on to the body, I've never done that before and it worked very well to get the cuts lined up correctly.
Cheers!

You can do a lot with the conquest games plastics....I will get some pics of my archers conversions up soon as an example.

Oh please do! I'd love to see them!
I'm quite torn if I should go ahead with the Normans or get 3 boxes of Ancient Germans and do that Irish Cav army... I'm waiting to hear back if a sale of normans will go ahead and if I can pick them up then I'll go that direction. But I'm super interested to see your conversions! :o

The ancient Germans make a great Saga cavalry army - they are what I'm using for my Strathclyde/North British force and I'm perfectly happy with them.

Missed this before but love the dane axe conversions 8) 8)

Cheers Mitch! That's great news, and what I was hoping for! I havent bought that expansion yet. How are they as an army?
They're still under construction, mate. They're in the queue behind thirty-odd Vikings, some top-up units for Dux Brit and a few ECW odds and ends. lol
I put one sprue together and posted on here, so you can see what they're like. I've moved one single figure up the list to put a unit of four on the table for the Dux Brit North British variation.
As an army, I don't know - my impression is they burn bright and burn fast and aren't an army for a long drawn out fight, but other will have more insight than me.
-
Sorry for the poor lighting on these, but I've been super busy and packed my other light away.
Havent been able to get much done the last few weeks, but this is something I've had in the works since I started converting the Dane Axes.
Also after some thought I think I'll start with 2 pts of Dane Axes and 2 pts of Hearthguard with hand-weapon and shield. I think this is a better balance to play.
So here is the AD Warlord with Standard Bearer. Still need to do the basing and the standard.... :D

Ok, I've finally finished with the Anglo-Dane Warlord. Pretty happy. As with the Vikings, I'll paint up another Warlord to use as a special character.

Very nice, particularly the shading on the cloak and the 'busy' groundwork on the base.

Oh, yes!

Just found this thread - great work on the GB plastics, you've really made them look different.
I feel very lazy as I pretty much just built them from the box, and bought some metal figures with dane axes. Need to play some more Saga, haven't had a game for ages.
-
Fantastic work on the warlord. That will make a great looking saga force.

I'm in the middle of writing all week, but I needed some small project to distract me for a break. So it decided to paint my first horse. Please, be kind :D

Cheers Mate! I have no doubt yours will look fantastic. Thanks for getting out my parcel! :D
The horse was surprisingly easy. Just like blending an Ogre.... :D It's a plastic Conquest mini, and it much nicer than I expected. I bought the Foundry William the Conquer set, which are obviously much finer minis. I think when I decide to expand, I'll 'demote' the plastics to warriors and replace them with Perry Crusaders. In fact, I may pick up a pack or two at Crisis :D
-
Fantastic horse! Very nice painting indeed.

That's a cracking paint job on both horse and rider. Now I've got try this blending thing :)
-
That's a cracking paint job on both horse and rider. Now I've got try this blending thing :)
Thanks for the kind words! I have to be honest, I have avoided learning how to blend as long as I could. I was just way too intimidated. But it's pretty easy. I realized my main historical failure with it was having my paint too thick. In any event, the horse was great fun to paint!
-
I think I posted the question in the wrong space... The one on the left is with acryllics and the right is with an oil wipe. The right side is def MUCH faster and I think gives a more realistic highlight and sheen. I know people are mad for super matt coatings, but real horses always seem to have a slight sheen to their coat. What do you guys think?
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/eaodak/AcryllicvOil01_zpsa7ecd5e8.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/eaodak/media/AcryllicvOil01_zpsa7ecd5e8.jpg.html)
-
I love the one on the left (but that maybe partly because it's just a nicer-looking model :))
Nice work anyway.
-
The one on the left is a plastic Conquest while the right is a metal Perry! I was shocked that I thought the plastic model was far superior to the Perry.... and how disappointed I was with the Perry model. Originally I was going to do my Hearthguard in metal and the Warriors in Plastic, but I think I'll reverse that now that I see them. The Foundry Normans are MUCH better....
Cheers Mate!
-
Interesting. Perry horses are usually pretty good I think, but this one does look a bit sickly ::)
-
Nice work. I like the one on the left as it has a more painterly look to the paint job, but the one on the right does have a realistic looking sheen, as you put it. If you can keep up the effort, the left would make for a more impressive warband, in my opinion. But, both look good :)
-
As with the other two I prefer the left hand horse. The blending is excellent. :)
-
Long time no SAGA painting... But my next point of Anglo-Dane Hearthguard finally done! One left to go!

Excellent work!

Thank you very much everyone! I must say the Foundry minis are always a joy to paint. Some people have mentioned that their vikings look a little on the fantastic side, but I think that a little bit of an ahistorical look works particularly well with the Jomsvikings who seemed to have an over the top look as compared to even their traditional viking counterparts...

Very nice! I always liked the pose of that model, he looks like he's busting out some serious power chords in an 80s metal video!

Thanks Mate! I agree, it's a great pose! Scottish Bard Aodh MacArdry traveled north to record the tales of Jarl Tor Erikson and his band of Jomsvikings. :D

Hello,
Superb project !!! :-*
Nikko

Thanks Nikko!
Just wanted to show off my Jomsvikings WIP. Jarl Tor Erikson, first point of Hearthguards, a Skald/Bard and a Pagan Priest :D

Heya! Those are some nice Vikings, great colour choices on them. Really like the raven banner.

Thanks Mate! I cant take credit for the banner, it was a Little Big Man decal set. :D But I'm really happy how it all came out!

Last Jomsvikings for now.... Time to switch over to my Normans while I wait for my order to arrive!

They look brilliant! :-*
Looking forward to seeing more.
-
Very nice minis (even if the shields are a little big for my taste), but the painting is really cool ! :-*
Hope to see more of your work soon.
-
Nice miniatures!
As I have some Foundry Vikings almost on the painting table and am looking for suitable spears I like the spear on the one in the last picture. Bought metal spears always looks a bit thin when attached to the model. The one your Viking is holding seems thicker; is it home made?

Thanks Chaps!

Lovely painting. :-* :-*
Keep it coming.

Thanks again everyone :D I have the rest of my Joms on order, so I'm switching to the Normans that have been sitting on my shelf for two years.... :D
-
Hello,
Very nice Jomsvikings !!! :-*
What colors did you use to paint hairs and beard ?
Nikko
-
Cheers Nikko!
For all of the hair I used the Reaper hair triads. I think they work really well. I try to use similar colors sometimes just for a little variation. Even if it's just blending a little of the colors within the triad.

They look great, very nice highlighting :)
-
Not greatly loving the figures, I must confess. The poses look a bit awkward. Stylistically they look a world away from your very lovely Jomsviking miniatures.
But the painting is as good as ever 8)
-
Missed the past few updates on this.
Great painting all round 8) 8) 8)
The pattening on the cloth is great :)
cheers

Thanks Mates!
I do agree, the Foundry crossbows and archers are a bit of a mixed bag pose wise. I really like number 3 and 4, but 1 and 2 are not so hot. It will be the same with the next group. I actually plan to paint up all 12 I have, and then pick the best once I'm done, even though I can only use 8.
The cavalry are all around much better and mix very well with the Conquest plastics. I was also interested in the Crusader minis, but they are really just 4 sculpts x2. So to get the variety I went Foundry...
-
Hello,
Thanks for your answer.
Very nice Norman Crossbowmen !!!

With pleasure! The Reaper Triads are really great. I also highly recommend the Drow Skin if you paint them :D

Top work, that man!

My Norman/Frankish mounted priest, WIP. He's the Bishop Odo from Foundry. After some debate and consultation I decided to base my warlord cav on 6cm bases, that will allow me to do some mini-vignette stuff. The other cav will be based on 4cm bases. All round.
Now my Odo, please to enjoy :D

The paintjobs are excellent as always, but I'm not 100% convinced about the bowstrings.
-

Thanks Mate! Yeah, it was a great idea in my head, but some of the sculpts didnt take to the strings well. Thought it would be that thing to set them over the top, now not too sure. Of course, I'm sorta committed now...lol
-
Lovely stuff...
I came across this product ...
http://www.uschivdr.com/products-in-detail/rigging/
It is for model planes and boats , I have also seen it used as telephone and electric lines on model railway layouts...
I wondered if it would work as bow strings...
All the best. Aly

Hi Aly! HUGE fan of your work!
Thank you for the compliment and the tip, I'll have to check it out. I'm thinking perhaps black was also the wrong color to choose in any event....

Love your work. Very well done. Makes me want to get back to my dark age stuff.
-
Superb stuff 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
Those faces are brilliant, you really capture their expressions!
Re: bowstrings. I think part of the problem is that sculptors don't consider the bowstring and arrow position when they're sculpting. In this case, those bows are far too straight to be at full draw, and our eye doesn't normally process the problem, but when you put a string on it I think it highlights it. Bending the bows a bit during the construction phase might give a more natural look? Also, I think you're right that a more neutral colour would have been better than black. Don't get me wrong, the models look great, I just think there might be some tweaks that could get the bowstrings really looking schmick :)

Some WIPs on my Anglo-Dane Warlord. I plan to redo my levy, but aside form that, the AD's are done!

Gorgeous! Who makes the Warlord figure?

Thanks Mates! The warlord is from Gripping Beast, he's the Pendar mini set. The standard bearer is also part of it. :D

Nicely done TBC. Keep them coming :)

Thanks Mates! :D
I've been super busy with work lately and so no time for minis... :( But there is a Grand Tournament for SAGA in Moscow in a month and I'm getting my Irish ready! Now that the Irish Heroes are finished, I can look to the Warlord and units.
I'm mostly using Footsore and in addition to the Irish will use their Brodir mini with Javelin, as my warlord, and this converted Fiana Dane Axman as the standard.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/eaodak/SAGA%20Irish%20Standard%2004_zpsfcxghqsx.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/eaodak/media/SAGA%20Irish%20Standard%2004_zpsfcxghqsx.jpg.html)

Since I'm using steel pins as javelins, I'll change this shield and make two pin-javelins and attach them and a new shield to the back.

Cool conversion! :)

Thanks!
Wanted to change the javelins to make them like the rest of the warband, and threw some GS on others :D

Nice work, TBC.
I like 'em!

Thanks Mates! I also have been entertaining mounted units.... So... more Irish! My mounted Warlord and Curaidh. I did a little conversion work on each. I wanted all the javelins to match so I cut out the sculpted ones and replaced them with steel pins. The Warlord I game eye covers to his helmet to make it look more Viking, like a spoil of war... But there was not much opportunity to convert him.

Nice threads, mate.
He looks like a proper poser.
:-* :-*

Nice work on the plaid TBC.
That is a peculiar looking horse though. Who makes the model?
-
Pretty sure that is a Gripping Beast horse. I have a few in my DA collection, and I swapped one out for a mount for my old Citadel Frodo. They are a bit wonky, yes.
-
Hi Chaps! Thanks for the compliments on the rider, I'm getting better at plaid :D.
He's the full Gripping Beast model, including horse. I agree it's a bit strange in proportions, but I put it down to it being more a highlands type horse than what one would find in say Normandy. Sure, it's not really historically accurate but I dont have access to a replacement and my tourney is on Saturday.
To paint them I use the oil-wipe method and the Mordheim horse painting guide as reference.
-
Oh, I actually do a variation on the eye, I paint a white line and then in the front half paint a black line over it. That way it looks like the horse is looking forward. Again, not exactly correct but it seems to work well enough for what I was trying. :D

So I'm making some headway for the Moscow Grand Melee this weekend.
My first mounted Curaidh and a picture of the assembled command.

Nice collection and nice conversions 8)
Horses don't have any white to the eyes.
Every time someone asserts this on LAF from now on (because it's been said often before), I am going to post this picture!
While it's true that horses serenely at rest or out for a nice walk don't generally show any whites to their eyes, horses most certainly do have whites to their eyes. When they are angry, stressed, spooked, scared, exerted - you see them. You often see it on racehorses too during the race. Imagine how they'd be in the middle of a battle with all hell breaking loose around them. Just saying... :)
-
I agree with you CB, but some tend to paint the white in similar proportions to the iris as in humans which is "incorrect". In those photos you see how little white is exposed, slightly more in a stressful situation. Generally, a crescent of white in either the front or rear corner should be all we see in a 28mm model.
