Title: Crusade: Lion Rampant game
Post by: Engel on November 07, 2013, 03:21:02 PM
I have now taken the plunge to start to collect the Crusade in 28mm.
The plan was to try to reuse one or two of my African tribal unit as a sort of mercenary light skirmishing unit for an Egyptian faction. And the Medieval Swedes I painted previously is planned to be recycled into a western force.
Its great to be able to use one miniature for lots of different settings.

But my first new and dedicated unit for this project is this small unit of Saracen light infantry.

Ive used leftover parts from the Perrys plastic box Mahdist Ansar. The miniatures with most clothing or Arabic headgear and so on that I didn´t think matched what I was after in the Tribal Africa project.

I think they maybe look a little more like Barbary corsairs then Saracen infantry but I think its close enough and its hard to argue with the price of plastics especially considering I got these from the leftovers.

I think they will do for starting up this project.

Thanks Janners.

I just finished this small Latin/Frankish infantry group.
They are intended to be used as a small group of mixed medium infantry and act as opponents for my coming Saracen force.
I added some other makers and bits but it’s mostly bits from Fireforge games. These are my first Fireforge games miniatures and I must say I like them.

Thanks all.
The puzzle terrain turned out even better then I had imagined. The plan was to be able to use them all as the same area terrain or be able to rearrange them to be placed separated without looking wrong, I dont like straight bases on my terrain pieces.
Feel free to nick that idea, after all that is what this forum is all about.

Latest unit.
A small unit of Turcoman horse archers, I´ll reckon I will need plenty of these in the future.

This is something more people should do... Army pictures.

Here are my small but growing force of Saracens with some African skirmishers recruited from my Tribal Africa project.

More pictures of the Saracens at:

Starting with from the left side I got a small unit of archers and some light infantry, I got two small unit of African skirmishers.
The Commander of this small force is accompanied by a drummer and two bodyguards (two spare infantry miniatures).
Then I got two other unit of African skirmishers lead by a commander from the same tribe.
Under them is a small unit of medium infantry and a small unit of Turcomen horse archers.

Yesterday I brought my miniatures to the club and press-ganged a friend to throw some dices in an Crusader game of Hail Caesar.

We played with small units instead of standard sized ones. We just gamed with what was available.

Im sure the gaming balance with close combat and ranged combat as well as the balance with unit types is somewhat altered with just using small units but it works.

The battle report can be found here http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/01/crusader-battle-report.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/01/crusader-battle-report.html)

Some of the pictures from the game.

Im sure we did all kinds of things wrong, both tactically and  rule wise but it was a really fun game non the less.

Thanks Duc de Limbourg, those bases where made for me by Tiny Terrain, http://tinyterrain.com/

Its a small company just starting up so the site is somewhat lacking at the moment but you could always use the "contact us" and ask for a prise as he havnt got them up on the site just yet.

If you mention "warband movement tray" and my name he knows what you mean.

They weren't that bad, but they weren't in par with the other horses on the market in my opinion.

The miniatures are Conquest games Norman Infantry but two of them have new heads from Warlord Games ww2 Sikh heads  http://store.warlordgames.com/collections/bolt-action-armoury/products/sikh-destroy-turbaned-figure-heads-24 , the other two have regular heads.
With some added greenstuff and the right colour pallet I think this could work.

They are a sort of test batch to see how those plastic miniatures would turn out.

The Azerbaijani Swordsmen miniatures from Perry Minatures was the base for the unit but I have included some Warlord Games plastic Celts with new shields and some greenstuff mustashios and such as well as one Mahadist uprising plastic miniature from Perry. These were mostly for fun, I wanted to try out how well they would intermix.

I think works great and to expand this unit in the future I will definitely ad more of Warlords Celts.

I know nearly nothing about the Azerbaijani Swordsmen but with those nice Turkic mustashios and bare torsos I will use them in my Ayyabid Egyptian army in Hail Caesar as a sort of  Turkic mercenary unit with the Ghazi fanatic stats (religious fanatics) as I think that will be the most fitting.

Last week we played another crusading game of Hail Caesar.

As my collection still is rather small or spread out we used "small" units.
As the armies weren't evenly matched in points we gave the Latin force some ruins to shelter in and a special rule of needed to hold out a number of turns rolling a dice for the game to end after this number of turns, the actual number of turns before they where allowed to roll that dice and the number on that dice have totally escapes me now.
And they where given two monk miniatures on foot, any foot units they are joining are given the stubborn rule (reroll one moral dice).

More pictures and the report can be found at: http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/03/crusade-aar.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/03/crusade-aar.html)

And here are some of the Pictures.

A thought that occured to me is that the Heavy cavalry formations in "small size" games of Hail Caesar are a killer. To better balance the Heavy cavalry I Think I should move up to standard sized units.

Their always a short supply on nice terrain so here’s a small amendment.

http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/04/terrain-pieces.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/04/terrain-pieces.html)

Some hills. Made out of styrophome, wood glue, sand, some watered down acrylic paint and a mixture of flock.

I liked my unit of Saharan light horse so much that I used that colour scheme on an archer unit.

I will count this unit as a medium archer unit in Hail Caesar so I have added shields on their backs.

But seriusly, Im trying to convince a gaming buddy of mine to get an arabic army to. He have gotten some miniatures but is a litle behind on the painting part so far. After that hopfully there will be no big problem to lure any other member of my gaming club to start a crusader army to oppose us.  :D

Ive used the plastic Norman knight kit from Conquest Games as the base for my new unit of Arab heavy Cavalry.
The base miniatures are somewhat lifeless and boring but I think I managed to breath some more life into them.

As the muslim rulers during the crusades thought more against each other then against the crusaders I think its only fitting that my friend Johan and I had this game.

We thought a great game of Hail Caesar using our joint miniatures and divided them into to forces opposing each other.

For the full battle report and lots and lots of picture go here: http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/06/clash-of-warlords-medieval-middle.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/06/clash-of-warlords-medieval-middle.html)

A new unit of light cavalry.  :)

The miniatures are from Magister Miliutum and is a mix of their historical and a fantasy range they carry.

Some of the riders I think looks okay, maybe even good but the horses are rather horrid. Especially some of them, some looks like small pony's.
But I think that now with the paint on them they at least looks better then when I cleaned up the miniatures from flashes.

I batchpainted a whole unit to speed things up.

Maybe not the most fun way to paint miniatures but it does speed up the whole process.
The miniatures are from Magister Militum.

Many more pictures at: http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/06/saracen-cavalry.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/06/saracen-cavalry.html)

I think the horses looks a little to small for proper battle steeds so I will downgrade these from my initial plan of heavy cavalry to a medium cavalry roll and maybe give them some sort of levy or militia rule. They got some nice armour and weapons but are lacking training and proper horses to fill a heavy cavalry roll. At least thats the plan at the moment.

So after a small pause with a gaming convention I have started gearing up with the crusade again.

My latest unit, a Saharan/Berber unit with spears.

Many more pictures at: http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/09/saharanberber-spearmen-unit.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2014/09/saharanberber-spearmen-unit.html)

They will join up with my Ayyabid and as they are somewhat toughter tribal warriors then your average citydwelling spearmen unit I will field them without the negeative special rules the standard spearmen get in a Hail Caesar Ayyabid force.
I can use the Fatamid armylist for corect stats I think.

The miniatures are a mixture of Gripping Beast plastic and metall arabs/morish troops, some really nice Magister Militum miniatures and some of Perrys Mahadist upprising plastic miniatures with bits swaped with the Gripping Beast plastics. I mixed the shields around to get a nice variation.
All shields are handpainted with brown as a joining colour to tie the unit further together.

Big thanks guys.

Those Tripolitian knights ain´t mine but I did do the shields for my friend Håkan, and I must admit they do look good.
Their mere precence on the battlefields made the saracens think twice about any movement when they were in the vincinity...

I had this image in my head of a ragtag group of crusaders tossed together in the heat of battle. Working together and discarding each other’s differences. It really got me the excuse to create this small group of brothers in arms.

Many more pictures at:

I plan to use these in Hail Caesar with these stats.

Clash - 6
Sustained - 5
Short range - 2/1
Long range - 1
Moral save - 4+
Stamina - 4
Special rules: Tough fighters, Stubborn, Steady, Valiant, Elite, Double handed weapon, Crossbow

I thought about giving them Brave and the Fanatic special rule but that might just be to much. Im sure these tough bastards will hold any waterhole or ruins they have claimed as their and afraid my Saracens will have a hard fight getting rid of them.

The back story was that with the arrival of new crusaders by ship the County of Tripoli would raise a mercenary army and together with these and its standing forces march southwards.
The spies of the Ayyubid dynasty picked up their movement and mustered its own forces and marched to meet this threat.

That meant that we could use oure joint collection of medieval and crusader era miniatures in one battle.

I thought my friend Håkan could use some more shields. Some of these might be that historical correct but I think they will look nice on his miniatures none the less.

And I also tested to do a medieval tent on my coffybreaks at work and then printed it on regular paper. I somehow glued the roof on rather bad but it was just to test out the size and how it would turn out. I was happy enough and thought it would be a shame not to use it so I based and flocked it.

The miniatures are from Midlam miniatures, a company to me unknown until recently from their Arabian nights range.

I made a new paper tent, this time a litle bigger. The roof part seems to be a little to small still so a new variant is planed.

I have converted and painted a new unit of Turcoman archers.

The miniatures are initially plastic Mongols from start Fireforge Steppe warriors box

I have exchanged some heads and made new headgear and nice mustashios from greenstuff.
Two of the bodies are from Gripping Beast plastic Arab infantry as I wanted to see how they would look together with the others.

I tried to use loots of green on this unit to make it stand out a little in my army and as an sort of inspiration from Medieval Total War II as there the Turks colour is green.

The miniatures are Old Glory except for one that is Perry.

I thought I needed some archers for my collection, so here we have a unit of medium levy archers.
I indended to paint these a little duller in colours and skip some of the detailing on the fabrics and so on. The plan is to let this unit make the other "propper" units pop alitle more on the table when they are arenged side by side.

And combining these with the previously painted small unit I can now muster a standard sized unit in HC.

As green being the colour of the Turks in Medieval Total War II, a game I played all to mutch... I thought I should try to capture a little of that feeling and use a loot of green on this unit.  :D

The miniatures are mostly Old Glory but with two Perry (in the whole unit that is) as OG sold these in packs of 10. They have swapped horses to better fit into the unit and I think it works rather well.

Thanks Commissarmoody.

And just to calm you down... Not all of those horsemen above are mine. My friend Johan needen some cavalry to, so I ordered some to him also. But its make for an more impressive picture to have the total order in one picture.

There are allways room for more light cavalry and its hard to argue with robes and turban in a Saracen force.  :D

A small unit of Bedouin light cavalry.

The miniatures are Old Glory. I have added extra trowing spears in the form of straws from a plastic broomstick.
I like their almost comical faces and thinks they ad a lot of charachter and makes the miniatures way funnier to paint.

This is just a unit I had to get. Cataphract Camel cavalry...

But my idea is that a very rich Sultan wanted to have a unit honour Guards, dressed in finest clothes with most expensive armour and most exotic animals to ride. Used in parade, showing of to foreign dignitary to impress and so on.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it.

Last week my friend Håkan and I had another great game of Hail Caesar.
The scenario wee decided to play was that one force would be the attacker and the defender would have 75% of the points, I think this was an old Warhammer scenario. We decided to play 8 rounds.
We managed to gather 708points for the Franks and this gave me 531 points for my Saracen force.

We did some point adjustments to the units as lets face it, the point system aint really balanced.

Units with:
0 in Moral save gets -1 point cheaper.
6+ Moral save, no adjustments.
5+ Moral save, cost 2 points more
4+ Moral save, cost 6 points more.

This wont make it perfect but at least somewhat better. Its a small simple adaptation that feels right.

Here are the pictures and the battle report from the game: http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2015/07/crusade-battle-hail-caesar-aar.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2015/07/crusade-battle-hail-caesar-aar.html)

Big thanks, the Crusades somewhat took the hold on me.

Usually I also get distracted all too easy but this has been something I always could fall back to.
At the moment I am somewhat distracted into 40k as my club is running an Escalation campaign but I got lots of miniatures in the pipe for the Crusades. So bee patient and I will update this thread with more pictures when they are ready.

The more I read about the Crusades, the Muslim perspective and so on. Gathering of miniatures from different sources and painting all those varied colors. The more I engulf into this the more different takes on it I find.

Very inspiring, I have a question which I hope won't drift the thread too much. Which would the best books for an apprentice Crusader? Ideally I'd like an Adkin 'Crusader Companion', plenty of piccys, mixed in with detailed accounts of the campaigns, and all topped off with personal accounts by them as were there. Pretty tall order I know but any pointers would be most appreciated.

???

Do you have the Amin Maalouf‎ book on the subject? I really enjoyed that!

My book shelf is rather limited I must confess.
I have a couple of osprey books on the subject. Some different magazines from different publishers, I subscibe on Medieval warfare http://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/pw/medieval-warfare/ and I have read some other books.

Some podcast about the crusades:
http://historyhub.ie/the-crusades

http://historyofthecrusades.podomatic.com/

On youtube there is the channel of "Real Crusades History" https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpiumHmUE5EZeLTftxv9qGw but you can find many Historical documantery on youtube also, good to have in the background when painting.  ;)

Further reading can be found at:

http://defendingcrusaderkingdoms.blogspot.com/

http://crossandcresent.blogspot.com/

https://weaponsandwarfare.com/category/crusades/

And there are of course pages upon pages of information about the crusades on wikipedia where I have spent hours reading.

So, I would say that I know somethings but are far from an expert.

Here are a start of what will hopefully become and French Crusading force, some crossbowmen.
These are enough to form two unit of crossbowmen in Lions Rampant or one standard sized and one small sized unit in Hail Caesar.

I wanted the blue and white theme from the House of Lusignan but with some other knights tossed in to have greater variation of colours. The commander of the unit have been given a old plastic Bretonnia helm to honor the knightly heratage. This is the Bretonnia unit I never got.

Combined with the previus painted unit I can now field this....

My friend Johan and I had a game of Lion Rampant set in the age of the Crusades.

Troops from the Egyptian Ayyubid dynasty was sent on a mission to collect taxes from a village when Syrian raiders decided to grab the gathered taxes before the Egyptians could collect it.

A small AAR from our last Crusade game of Lion Rampant.

The Franks had found an oasis and then the Saracens attack...
It is believable that the Egyptian and Turkic forces have spotted the French and German movement and calculated that they where moving towards this waterhole.
They attack before the Crusaders have fully mustered their forces.

Will the Crusaders manage to hold their positions untill their reinforcements arrive?...

I dont think their are any better way of Necroposting a crusader adventure then to post about the Knights of Sait Lazarus...

More pictures at: https://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.com/2019/11/dismounted-knights-of-saint-lazarus.html (https://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.com/2019/11/dismounted-knights-of-saint-lazarus.html)

I started with Fireforge miniatures and then added some undead bits from the Frostgrave cultist box, and some metal miniatures for that added variation. I really like the colour pallet of the green versus the white and the dark chainmail. This was a fun unit to build and paint.

A unit of Sejuk Turkish Askari heavy cavalry with lances and bows.

This unit is a mixture. Its Gripping Beast plastic Arabic cavalry as a base bit with lots of Fireforge bits tossed into the mix, from their westerners knights, Russian and Mongol line. I tested giving some of the horses chainmail armour, its not perfect but its a nice start. Something I might experiment further with in the future.

I wanted them to have a rather muted and rugged feel. Adding lots of brown tones to gives them that campaigning look to them.

Yeah, I agree. They leave a lot to wish for. But its hard to argue with the price of plastic. Or the weight. Its getting heavy to carry a full metal army around.

Besides, there are not that many good looking saracen miniatures in metal either.
