Title: [LaserCutCard] Gothic Bastion
Post by: LaserCutCard on November 08, 2013, 03:27:02 AM
Hi all

Rather than create separate threads I'm going to post all the stuff I am working on into this one.

Here is the third test cut of the Casspir IMV - it is compared here against the Buffel model and then some GW miniatures for scale.

The basic design elements are all there but the proportions are slightly wrong. It is slightly too fat. It needs to be slimmed down a little.

It is (like the Buffel) mostly 1mm heavy card, a bit of MDF and some plastic tubing.

Are these real current vehicles? or Sci Fi versions inspired by South African APCs?
Are they for sale?

Thanks for all the kind words all.

This is exactly what I think I will be using it for... Adeptus Arbites or possibly Sororitas.

I am doing a paint test on one over at Terragenesis and that one will be painted up in SAP Yellow :)

And Mick - yes the Buffel is currently in the web store, the casspir should be there late next week

Very sweet - not my scale or period but  :o

The tire effect is great - looks like a real tread.

Any hope for a simple version for 15mm?

former user -is that the Ingwe ATGM on top of it?

We are going to do that as an add-on for the Ratel, not for the Casspir.

AndrewBeasley - sorry mate not at this stage. The card is 1mm thick and at 1/100 scale is just far to thick to fold. Making it in thinner card would be a pain in the buttocks to assemble.

I wonder why the gearbox is not protected. A well swung sledge hammer or pick would immobilize it immediately. Or did I miss something?

The design philosophy of these vehicles is to sacrifice themselves for the sake of the crew/passengers. So components like that are designed to shear off when the vehicle runs over a landmine rather than be forced up into the hull to become shrapnel. So a lot of the components like the gearbox and the drive train are outside the monocoque hull, left to fend for themselves.

Ah, thanks. A bit non-military concept, but rather cheap. Like B.A. Barracus would do perhaps...  ;)

I thought I would test the durability of the card (and try something new) by doing the salt weathering technique on this one.

First I gave it an undercoat of matt fixative

Then it got 2 coats of Tamiya hull red

The I wet it with warm water applied with a paint brush and sprinkled on coarse salt.

I've removed the wheels as I can reuse these for the next test so this is going to be an abandoned / ruined one.

Ok - I am now a huge fan of this technique!

For the paint scheme I went for the old apartheid era South African Police Services colour scheme.

This was a couple of different shades of yellow with a quick attempt at a blue line down the sides (this is just a paint test after all)

Once this dried I just scrubbed the salt off with a large paint brush.

It is so easy... everyone with access to an airbrush should try this.

There are more photos here: http://nothingunpainted.blogspot.com/2013/11/casspir-with-salt-weathering-technique.html (http://nothingunpainted.blogspot.com/2013/11/casspir-with-salt-weathering-technique.html)

Here is the recut of the ratel, with a bunch of enhancements.

No effort has been made yet to align the edges yet but the components are all coming together.

The standard turret, the ZT3 Ingwe missle turret and the 90mm turret will all be options

You can see how it has shrunk down a bit compared to the first cut.

A further test cut of the casspir.

It is still too expensive so we have made a decision to strip the interior from the basic kit and sell it separately.
I have also redone the wheels so that they look more like the proper casspi's wheels  rather than these, which are the buffel wheels scaled up.

The new model should be cut tomorrow, so hopefully pictures of the final model on Friday.

The laser cutters are back on monday and I have already sent through an order so they should be there the middle of next week.

I have bumped up the stock on the website to 10 units

That is a most welcome message btw :)
Title: Re: [LaserCutCard] Lots of updates
Post by: LaserCutCard on February 14, 2015, 05:19:25 AM
Wow - I just realised that I have been forgetting to update this thread  :(

Here is everything we've been working on this year

We've had a flight stand in the store for ages but never produced a model to go on top of it. Not for want of trying... but we've never been happy with the designs we've had so far.

This one might be different. The test cut will tell.

This is the new quad cannon.

This kit has several improvements on the old one.

By eliminating the MDF parts and standardizing some of the plastic components , we have been able to substantially reduce the cost from $12.95 to $8.50.

The circular ammo hoppers (which we took from the chaos ikon cannon) make the model more visually interesting and nicer to paint.

Finally, the model can be assembled instead just as two twin-linked autocannon, which can be used to kitbash.

The water tower and bridges are finally finished - two days late on account of single parenting duties. They are part of the "urban scatter" range.

There is some more information here: http://lasercutcard.co.za/2015/01/water-towers-bridges/

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/v/t1.0-9/10580152_848511825192657_4806074698898894105_n.jpg?oh=386f565c9db4ba03d160d84eb0afea6a&oe=552245B8&__gda__=1428629348_62297a8e84358ee263beefde25493e9b)

Cyborg hill set

This is almost done. It needs some final tweaks and the build instructions but we should be good to go next week.

The reason we have done this kit is simple: Line of Sight. The rest of the cyborg range is really fantastic but apart from the statis tomb, nothing is capable of blocking LOS across the table, especially from vehicles. Well, not up until now....

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10885027_848524368524736_7007343236281503059_n.jpg?oh=b6195e5331151a13f82df1c564c03a12&oe=555F4FE7&__gda__=1432000863_d61ded4111b5c9a23ef6f62ca0cb37eb)

The set will comprise two large half-hills and two small half-hills. These can be stacked, used on table edges, split to form canyons or pretty much whatever else you want to do.

The beta test of the new scifi office block has been painted up.

I have built up v3 - this one has a whole raft of improvements including
Doors on each of the landings
Elevator access on the roof
Strip lighting around the rear doors
Better detailing on the “glass” panels
Internal bracing on the bottom floor (not shown)

We already have a set of standard shipping containers for 28mm games

These ship in a threepack and are $16.95 a pack (shipping is $2 worldwide)

We've just added three new sets to this range. These are all containers that have been converted to be houses, shops or offices.

Site Office Set

Houses set

We set up a 4'x4' table to test terrain density with the shipping containers we have and this was the result. We need to think about getting some bigger pieces if we ever want to offer an entire container board.

Custom barricade set: soviet ice warriors

We occasionally get requests for barricade sets for specific armies or factions and this got us thinking about offering custom barricade sets.

The idea is that there is a standard shape onto which we would place a vector image that you sent us.

So to test the concept, I did some for my valhallans.

I think this is a workable concept so we are looking at coming up with a standard price for the service.

We’ve been asked several times to look at doing 10mm scale buildings for games like Dropzone Commander and we’ve finally decided to give it a try.

These are early tests. These are the straight 28mm scale files shrunk down and cut. There are huge gaps or overlaps as the 28mm files were carefully balanced to take into account the thickness of the card, which is now hopelessly out.

Nevertheless, I think these show that we have something we can contribute to the 10mm arena – all we need to do is recalibrate the files.

Looks great!

Have you guys considered doing a set of just stairways in 28mm?  Stairs are one of those time-consumning fiddly bits that even those of us who scratchbuild our own terrain might like to have pre-cut for us and it's probably a set that could ship for $1.  Seems like most of the work is mostly done in your container accessory set.

As for stairwells, not a bad idea since we have stairs already that accommodate standard 28mm bases. We'll look into it

Post by: LaserCutCard on March 03, 2015, 09:19:41 AM
Since it is Tuesday and since we are trying to have something new every Tuesday, today is the day of the skips and bins :)

The “urban scatter” set has been renamed “skips and bins”. It has gone up in price $2 (from $5.50 to $7.50) but it now has an extra skip in it (which is the most useful piece in the set)

It ships worldwide for $1 and will love you long time.

Yep - heavy duty cardboard. Can be cut fine with a knife. Approximately 1mm thick

Post by: LaserCutCard on March 12, 2015, 08:41:40 AM
We’ve created a new product to round out our container range – stacked containers.

We found that a lot of the time we were stacking the containers on top of one another and someone suggested we do a stacked set (as it would be cheaper than two individual ones).

And so here it is.

$16.95 for the set of stacked containers, and postage anywhere is $2 (the set has two stacks)

http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/containers-stacked (http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/containers-stacked)

Also, we’ve created a bundle deal that is any two of our container sets for $25.50 (postage is $4)

You can mix and match between

- set of 3 standard containers
- set of 2 stacks of containers
- container houses
- container shops
- container site office

Title: Re: [LaserCutCard] Strength test #2
Post by: LaserCutCard on March 13, 2015, 02:21:30 PM
After our initial strength test (scroll back a bit if you did not see it), someone in the Infinity Australia facebook page asked if the picnic table could stand TWO bricks The answer is, one brick good, two bricks bad (but it can handle the weight of two bricks with assistance)

Nothing actually broke but it was very difficult to get the weight to stay exactly above the legs. If I held it in place, the legs could take the weight but as soon as I let go it would fall one way or the other to the side. I think my work table is not actually level.

I was quite impressed that the normal wood glue did not tear… the card just bent. I’ll have these back on the table after straightening the legs up.

Just to be clear... I am in no way implying that our stuff is stronger than anyone else's - these are just to say that our stuff is stronger than most people give card credit for.

This is a model that I am really excited about. The test build went together incredibly easily meaning all we have to do is think about detailing. When you compare it to some other flyers it is a little big and so the next test will scale it down a little but overall it worked out fantastically.

That's really nice.  I'm not sure a large version should necessarily be abandoned. maybe just reshape the cargo bay.  There is room in the market for a flyer that can fit a tank in the cargo hold.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you all come up with.

Title: Re: [LaserCutCard] Seven cool tables
Post by: LaserCutCard on April 14, 2015, 07:09:36 AM
We supplied the scenery for a 40k tournament over this last weekend that was part of Icon By The Sea - a local gaming convention

Here are the tables we did

There are bigger images here: http://lasercutcard.co.za/2015/04/icon-by-the-sea-2015/ (http://lasercutcard.co.za/2015/04/icon-by-the-sea-2015/)

The container docks table was a highlight of the tournament.
Apart from featuring plenty of examples of our shipping container range (http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/scenery/shipping_containers), it also featured a container ship AND an escort destroyer.
The destroyer had three basilisks on it, each of which could be fired once per game.

The Necron table represented the surface of a world totally given over to a data matrix and featured an example of every single item in our Cyborg range (http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/cyborg)

The “Infinity” table represented something unfamiliar to most 40k players: unruined buildings. It had all our Futurehab range (http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/scenery/futurehab) on it

The art deco ruins table was a big favourite with all the players, being dominated by a huge skyscraper that had special rules attached to it. This used multiple versions of our art deco ruins

The ork table used all of our existing Orc range (http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/orc) as well as our soon-to-be-released orc fort and orc bastion

The Nurgle table featured a large number of disturbing baby heads, showing that cute little dolls can be way way creepier than skulls.

The alpine table represented a 40k version of the Ardennes

The entire weekend was a blast and we will definitely be back next year, bigger and better.

The gunship model is finished… it just needs a nice paint job.

It should retail for $16 including the stand.

it is bigger than a storm talon and smaller than a storm raven.

We're keeping the detailing down so that you can modify it into whatever you want.

Title: Re: [LaserCutCard] Scrap fort WIPs
Post by: LaserCutCard on April 22, 2015, 07:43:03 AM
We've been playing around with this for a while, including using a prototype in a local competition to see how players interacted with it.

It is almost ready to go

The idea is to produce a modular fort that comprises of four basic kits:

A bastion

A gatehouse

A tower

A wall

The gatehouse, tower and wall also come with two short angled walls so that you don't have to have a perfectly square fort.

We aim to have each set priced at around $10 and you can buy what you want depending on how big you want your fort to be

As for player feedback,
- it was a great LOS blocker at the centre of the table
- The short walls are counted as buildings with stats Armour 11/11/11 HP2 so that they can be destroyed in game relatively easily
- the other pieces are Armour 12/12/12 HP3
- having the pieces modular made it very easy to pack away and the pieces were really strong

Now to paint them :)

We have re-released the art deco ruins and they are now in the store here: http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/scenery/buildings

These models have had the MDF replaced with card, which has made them lighter (saves on shipping) and cheaper by about $7 per model.

They are all part of the same building master file (which is based on a real building - Victoria Mansions in Durban, South Africa)

They are fantastic for 28mm games where skulls are not a prerequisite (or even 28mm games where you are just tired of skulls) :D

One level ruin: $16

Two level ruin: $20

Two level ruin: $20

Three level ruin: $20

It's  been a quiet couple of months on the R&D front at LCC but things are starting to happen again.

These are test cuts of two new kits.

Container Box Set test cut

This is basically a set of 4 containers in sets of two, joined together. It will complement the stacked containers and the set of three single containers and provide a cheap and easy way to set up an entire board with containers.

Na-To test cut 1

The Na-To was an Imperial Japanese Army tank destroyer designed in the closing stages of WW2.

We like the shape as a generic tracked transport and so are having a crack at it.

The basic test for the Na-To turned out quite well. This is the basic shape with no detailing – that can come later. Assuming that we are aiming for 1/48 scale, this cut is substantially bigger than the “real” one – it is aimed at wartrakk size. The bin on the back is also a lot wider than the real model on account of WAAAGH.

The next version will test an accurate 1/48 scale one with a slightly different track system but so far, so good.

If you want to see bigger versions of those pictures they are available here: http://lasercutcard.co.za/2015/08/new-vehicle-and-shipping-containers-wips/

Those could be useful.  I would shorten the engine compartment and lengthen the rear compartment to maximize the WAAAGH potential...
Title: Re: [LaserCutCard] Container bundle
Post by: LaserCutCard on August 04, 2015, 10:26:49 AM
We’ve added a new container set to our collection – the “container box” set. This is effectively two of our standard containers, side by side.

This completes our Core Container range, which comprises set of 3 standard single containers, the “container stack” (two standard containers on top of one another) and now the “container box”.

The stack and box sets are $14.95 each and the standard set of 3 is only $15.95 but you can now get all three of these core sets in a single bundle for only $34.95 – saving 25%!

All the container options are available here: http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/scenery/shipping_containers

The Na-To, resized for 1/48 and with detailing added.

The track system has been modifed to have idler wheels too.

What a great model to put together... easy and fast to build and strong as heck. It had some tiny bugs which have been sent for correction and then we should be able to release it next week.

Price is looking at around $18

Title: Re: [LaserCutCard] New kit: The Na-To chassis
Post by: LaserCutCard on September 02, 2015, 09:38:21 AM
The Na-To was a late addition to the WW2 arsenal of the Empire Of Japan. It was intended as the carrier for the Type 5 anti-tank gun and was meant for the final defense of the home islands.

The war ended before it went into production but we kind of love the ugly little beast and so it is resurrected here as a generic tractor.

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/na-to04-300x262.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/na-to04.jpg)
The standard model is really easy to put together and is a great basis for your own conversions. This basic set is $16.95

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/na-to05-300x264.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/na-to05.jpg)
It can be bought with the “orc” upgrade set for an additional $4… this includes a set of orc glyphs and a set of our heavy machine guns. The upgrade is an extra $4

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/na-to06-300x221.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/na-to06.jpg)
The model is scaled fairly accurately to 1/48 scale and as a happy coincidence, is perfect for 30mm wargames systems.

Postage is $2 worldwide for a single model, but only $4 for up to 3.

The glyph upgrade set includes enough glyphs for 2 models so if you are considering ordering 2 or more of the "orc ones, it is only necessary to buy one upgrade per 2 models.

See it in the store here: http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/vehicles/na-to-chassis (http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/vehicles/na-to-chassis)

1 x watchtower set (2 watchtowers)

All models are supplied unpainted and unassembled.

Models are made from 1mm heavy card in 2 layers (so final wall thickness is 2mm)

Scenic bases not included.

Commerce is the lifeblood of the city, no matter what the century or planet.

This is a three-level office block that would be at home anywhere from Neo Tokyo to Coruscant.

It is made from 1mm heavy card and comes supplied unassembled and unpainted in an A4 flat pack.

It features access points to all levels, including the roof.

The lowest level is exactly the same height as FutureHab #1, making those heroic leaps across the alley a little easier.

Multiple models can be pushed together to create one huge building.

Other FutureHabs

This is a single-level entertainment venue from the seedier side of Neo Tokyo (or below the cloud cover on Coruscant)
It is made from 1mm heavy card and comes supplied unassembled and unpainted in an A4 flat pack.
Once constructed it can be stored by stacking the components inside one another to save space.
The outer walls are removable to allow models to move inside.

All three models have the same price: $15.95 per model

We are releasing our three turrets as stand-alone kits for $3.95 each.

Also, the tracked APC has come down in price to $15.95 and all the other vehicles are now only $17.95

90mm cannon

20mm command turret

ZT3 guided missile turret.

These are all compatible with the tracked APC and the Ratel IFV and can be bought as an add-on for these vehicles for an extra $2.95
(the Ratel always comes with the 90mm turret but you can add on one of the others)

We’re working on some 28mm brownstone buildings for use in contemporary games.

The basic idea is to have a core building and then have detailing layers that can change the look depending on how you add them on.

Here are some shots of the first two buildings, mixed in with some of our “urban scatter” terrain and a water tower

You can click on the images to get bigger versions

Thanks for the kind words.

Shipping will be about $10 anywhere in the world, or $13 if you want tracking too.

Total cost including shipping is therefore looking to be around $35 per building

We have released a range of futuristic buildings aimed at Infinity but possibly good for Tau or Eldar.

The buildings on their own are just basic shapes but they can be combined with themselves and our range of DIY doors and windows to make some attractive and very cheap buildings.

Click on each image to see a bigger version if you want

*** The Round House ***

It is called the "Round House" because 6 of them will form a circular structure

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/house-round-02-300x127.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/house-round-02.jpg)
This costs around $5 for one - and can be stacked and combined in numerous ways.

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/house-round-03-300x206.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/house-round-03.jpg)
It can be combined with ours (or anyone else's) doors and windows to give buildings like this.

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/house-round-bundle-300x184.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/house-round-bundle.jpg)
As a bundle deal, you can get 3 round houses, 8 doors and 16 windows for only $16.50!

*** The Comma House ***

The largest of the three and slightly more complicated to build. This is truly a unique building that will draw attention on any table it is on

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/house-comma-02-300x204.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/house-comma-02.jpg)
This costs around $9 for one - and can also be combined in numerous ways.

As a bundle deal, you can get 2 comma houses, 8 doors and 16 windows for only $21.17!

*** The Arc House ***
A multi-level building with gracefully swept wings, this was also referred to as the "bird house" earlier in development. It too can be combined with itself to create numerous different configurations.

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/house-arc-02-300x216.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/house-arc-02.jpg)

What's on the workbench in the first week of Q3?

Click on the images for bigger versions if you want

M113 Redux

 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_00-300x246.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_00.jpg)
We wondered what our M113 model would look like if we expanded the side armour down a bit and so the first step was a quick sketch

 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_01-300x142.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_01.jpg)
This is the "first fit" cut - a basic proof of concept cut to see what it would look like.

 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_02-300x244.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_02.jpg)
Next came a detail cut to see how it all fitted together. Not looking too bad but some of the details need to be reworked

 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_03-300x158.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_03.jpg)
The main thing that will have to change are the road wheels. If we want the side hatch to be realistically able to go through to the main hull, then the existing road wheels (light green) are too big. Fortunately the Churchill (a WW2 British tank) provided the inspiration for a smaller set of road wheels, as the Churchill had a side hatch and ran its tracks around the outside of the sides, similar to WW1 tanks. The track course is shown in red. So the next cut will be to modify the design to incorporate these changes.

Mk IV Tank

If you haven't seen the trailer yet for Battlefield 1 then you really are missing out.

We are super-excited about the game and have decided to do the vehicles that have featured in the trailer (for use as "counts as" models in other gaming systems)

 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_00-300x153.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_00.jpg)
Steve started out doing a basic cad render and I think he nailed it pretty well

 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_01-251x300.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_01.jpg)
This is the "first fit" test done straight off the render... worked out so so but was a bit small and also difficult to put together.

 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_02-300x113.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_02.jpg)
This is the second cut... a detail cut that was also scaled up substantially. This one went together very easily but is perhaps a little big. The next cut will scale this down and add more detail

All cardboard Heavy Artillery / Big Bertha

 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/artillery_card01-300x206.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/artillery_card01.jpg)
Our existing heavy artillery kit is a mix of card and MDF and the MDF adds quite a bit to the cost. This was a test to take all the MDF bits and turn them into two layers of card - so instead of 3mm MDF, you would have 2mm of card. Worked ok but a few small bugs to iron out.

 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/bertha00-300x188.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/bertha00.jpg)
In keeping with the BF1 theme, we also want to make our heavy artillery into a towed version... and Big Bertha (a WW1 German siege gun) is proving the inspiration

 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/bertha01-300x281.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/bertha01.jpg)
Here is the first fit cut for the Bertha components. The main gun and barrel is the same as the existing kit and will be interchangeable- it is the chassis that is new.

A7V tank

718 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/a7v-00-300x99.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/a7v-00.jpg)
We've seen this tank (the only production tank the Germans put into WW1) in the BF1 gameplay videos and so are going to have a crack at it.

FT17 tank

 (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/ft17-00-300x88.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/ft17-00.jpg)
This might or might not be in the game but we want to do it anyway as it is an iconic WW1 tank and also, I want them for my Imperial Guard army as a small scout tank that I can use instead of sentinals.

Yes - there will be a standard MK IV kit and then the "Last Crusade" will be an upgrade option.

We are still working on the parts for all of this but the upgrade will hopefully include:

- cromwell turret
- new deck plate to receive the turret
- front sponson that can accept a "heavy rocket gun" or a "laser cannon"
- alternative weapons options for side sponsons ("heavy rocket guns")

The last two upgrades are to allow you to set your "Last Crusade" a long long way into the future, should you want.

There was a lot happening on the workbench in the second week of Q3 (10 - 16 July 2016)

M113 R(edux)

The new road wheels and doors are sorted.

The doors (which we borrowed from the Ratel model) open forwards to offer some more protection to dismounting troops. There is also a step plate and a handle to help troops remount.

All doors and hatches can be modeled open. There are some tiny bugs with this file and we want to change the detailing on the sides... the "icon" on the side will be dropped in favour of some more armour detailing. This should be released next week.

Estimated cost will be $12.50, worldwide postage will be $3

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_04-300x176.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_04.jpg)

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_05-300x195.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/m113_r_05.jpg)

MK IV tank
Lots of detailing has been added. We are loving this model! The model is 1% smaller than 1/48 scale. Still some teething issues with the armour plates on the sponsons. The next cut should fix all of these (including bumping the size up to be exactly 1/48 scale)

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_04-300x262.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_04.jpg)

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_05-300x124.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_05.jpg)

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_06-300x159.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mk_iv_06.jpg)

The kit price is looking at being around $16 but we will try get that down with the production cuts.

Big Bertha

Lots more detail added, and a short range mortar version of the barrel as a test.

We are going to scrap the working cogs and gears and rather ramp up the detailing. The gun will still go up and down in the mount but the side handles will no longer turn. They are fiddly to build and we would rather it looked awesome and not work, than look simple and work.

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/bertha02-300x231.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/bertha02.jpg)

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/bertha04-300x158.jpg" alt="bertha04" width="300" height="158" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-731") (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/bertha04.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-731)

FT17 and A7V
The "first fit" cuts for these had mixed results. The A7V was a dream... we are moving straight on to detailing.

The FT17 needs a lot of work - this way is hard to build.

Not really sure on that actually.

The real tracks are not terribly detailed as it is

We could add some "rivets" to the tracks (say 4 per link) but given the amount of visible track, that will add maybe 3-4 dollars to the retail price... which we are trying to keep down.

But on the other hand if the bland tracks put people off, then we might have to just add the detail and ask you to (as they say here) kak en betaal

I'd recommend that you add the overlap ridges on the track plates (but not for the units in direct contact with the table.) the rivets are redundant on the tracks as they begin to look cluttered at scale. However it's that additional texture which  will set your model apart from similar models on the market.
If you feel that this may put the price up too much. Then I'd recommend a tutorial on your website showing how to add the plate over laps from the waste card,in the kit.

Mark.

That is a very good idea... thanks. I will try it out and take some photos later today

Your welcome,
It's worth noting that track plate measurements more often than not include the overlap as part of the depth measurement.
I'd recommend that you start plating the track at the nose wheel of the track runners.Plating in both directions from that point. As it's important that they sit correctly hear (as it's the most visual point of the whole track) it needs to sit as it does in the photograph of the real tank. If it doesn't sit like this then people will feel there's something off with your model (they'll be unlikely to tell you why but they'll know there's something off)as flat surfaces travelling around a curve for some reason just register in the brain in that fashion anything else looks clumsy.
Those five links (three at a real push)need to be individual pretty much the rest of the track can be done as a strip.
(I'll drop you a PM qualifying my post so I don't look like a know it all ;))

+1 to all of Tin Shed's suggestions. It's not the rivets which are noticeable in their absence; it's the overlap ridges. As it stand the existing tracks look unfinished compared to the fine detailing on the rest of the model.

I got a bit distracted today and did not manage to test this out but I am going to see what adding 2mm wide strips to each track section that is visible.

The limitation we have to work with is the thickness of the card... it is a very sturdy card that is 1mm thick and so adding layers quickly adds thickness - it also means that you can't layer them like scales as they are simply too thick.

Here is what I will try - this is a side profile of the track "links" at their current dimensions - each link is 6.5mm long and 1mm thick. I will see what it looks like to take a 2mm strip and glue it slightly over each join. That should give the impression of the over-and-under effect and also add some visual complexity to the tracks.

Thanks again for all your feedback

I wonder if a similar effect could be done using less card with a creased tab or small cuutaway added to sit at an angle to create something a bit closer to the tread ridges?

Like so:

Perhaps that is too fiddly though?

Personally, I think strips would be fine, just throwing out additional ideas.

Hmm You will need to use plastic Rods for the cannons in any case. Why not using the thin Evergreen Plastic-Rod 020" and cut some spacer to fill the gaps? Would look more close to the original then they can achive with the cutted Card?!

There's no need to add to the costing for such a model.Believe me there's absolutely nothing on any of the mk's of rhomboid tank that require anything more than card or an occasional cocktail stick.
The method selected is pretty much the best solution.A light sanding on the edges will give a better effect than plastic rod.I doubt very much it will need that kind of tweaking. As it comes will be enough for all but the pickiest (the resin tanks on the market have stylised track plates anyway,as it's the simplest way to keep the model functional)
Neal has kindly offered to send me a kit to play with.So I'll put my money where my mouth is and write a thread/review on how to build one and how to tweak it to stand against more conventional models(if necessary)

I have thought of that but adding that amount of plastic rod to the kit will be too expensive... so I will put that idea in the build instructions as an option.

Attached are two pics - one being the Evergreen Plastics half-round shape that would be perfect for this and the other being a rough test using hand-cut 2mm wide card.

I think the 2mm wide card does a good enough job creating some detailing, and the evergreen plastic can be used if you want to go for greater realism.

I will add some of the 1.5mm wide pieces to the next cut to see.

Plastic rod?

I find that cheap plastic knitting needles (you can buy second hand in charity shops of full packs in Pound stores) are perfect for replacing more expensive, purpose built plastic rod such as Evergreen.

Just a thought.

Neal,
Just a quick note- track plates run in the opposite direction.
lf your machine is capable then a beveled edge to the rear edge of the 1.5mm would give a cleaner look.A 45 degree angle would work best. That way you can construct a 3mm wide ladder cut with a 45' cut centred at 1.5mm and running the length of the ladder. This will give you double the number of plates for the run simply by turning one half over so both diagonal slopes of the 45' cut are face up.

Right angles only. Also, these pieces are fiddly enough as it is at this size (2mm x 7mm) and the recuts are going to be even smaller

So what I will have to aim for is giving the visual idea of the plates with the parts available in the kit, whilst leaving it up to you if you want to kitbash to add detail.

Bear in mind that as it is, the builder is going to have to glue 80 of these little pieces into place by hand, one at a time. That is already a big ask.

In case you haven't already noticed, the "rivets" are actually holes in the card, not bumps.... so they give the impression of riveted plates without actually being there  :D

There's nothing wrong with it as it stand.
As for the number of parts it's a necessary evil and one you'll not loss ground on.what would make it easier to model is to include a crenulated jig for even spacing of the plate bars .from the waste card(it doesn't need to be in the kit.just a 'how to' on the site.)
I personally make one trick pony jigs, and tools for the majority of scratch builds. As it's often the best way to undertake repetitive detailing.

Not a bad idea.

I also thought of the styrene rod idea, but figured it would add too much to the cost of the model.

As one with experience with LCC kit-bashing - I'd seriously stick with the 2mm card bits at most, and spend the rest of your time/expertise developing your other cardboard coolness.  :-*  Personally I wouldn't bother to include either, and leave it up to the modeller to source as required.

Judging from the pics, the existing score-marks on the tracks provide a sufficient guide for either 2mm x 7mm card, or for other plastic embellishments.

My two cents.

Neal,
It's been bugging me ,I've been waiting until I see the parts frames!but I might as well ask now.Why 80 2mm wide strips? Is it simply because your adjusting the model as you go? Because you can build the track with fewer production strips and end up with the same effect for less effort.

Depending on your final parts frames it's possible to do the track plates easily with 15-16 2mm strips
10-11 at 2mm by 42mm and 5 at 2mm by 28mm(excluding cuts) based on a quick count of track links in earlier pictures so give or take a couple. It really depends upon your frame layout.

This might explain it a bit better

There should be enough thin strips to cover all the visible parts of the track, leaving the bottom part that touches the ground flat.

Here is the MK IV resized to exactly 1/48

We are also messing around with a MK IV "Indiana Jones" upgrade - which features a modified top hull that takes a Cromwell turret.

The turret fitting is compatible with certain other kits.

The Cromwell turret will come with a choice of 2 different cannons... the Indy cannon and a battle cannon.

The upgrade kit also comes with "heavy rocket guns" to replace the 6pdr sponson guns.

Not quite sure what you're tantalisingly implying here but I'll be getting a turret so I can build it as a 95mm Cromwell CS turret to swap onto my 1/48 Tamiya kit when it needs to do duty as a D-Day Royal Marines vehicle...  ::)

It looks like more than enough room for the tweak I had in mind to reduce the track build by roughly 3/4.
If you can rotate the strips and increase them from 13mm to 42m (assuming there's approximately 90mm,of height on the sheet just for ease )then you can use the same net/ grid  but with only twenty 1.5mm runs)
The idea being that you attatch them to the tracks before removing them from the frame. So 1.5mm strip covers four track plates in one go.Now depending on preference the modeller can do all twenty (which make the 'cornering ' a little more curved.Or fifteen strips across the four widths of track, then remove them up that point and do the last five one set of four at a time to give you more authentic links for the ends.
It's easier twenty easy to handle '4cm' lengths than 80 '1cm' lengths. It doesn't seem such a chore especially as it's done before the track released from the frames.

Your influences are definitely as stated lol,The Indiana Jones version is a winner. The other versions would make Rick Priestly chuckle, ;)

Today we release a new model: the M113 Redux tracked APC
This is a futuristic evolution of our generic APC based on the US M113.

It features a new suspension and wheel system and side doors that open forwards to protect troops when leaving / entering

It is made from layers of 1mm heavy card, laser cut.

The hatches and doors can be modelled open or shut .

It is compatible with our range of turrets

$12.95 for 1 model or buy a platoon of 3 for only $29.95

It is in the store here http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/vehicles/m113_r_tracked_apc (http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/vehicles/m113_r_tracked_apc)

Nice work.

Neal kindly sent me a pre production draft of the mkIV. Which arrived this morning. It took roughly an hour and a half to get to this stage.(however I work insanely fast with card).
The red painted areas are notes or modifications made by me.Simply because this is an unfinished draft and lacks a few things. The notes are for Neal(full break down will be sent asap Neal.just not able to attach relevant images from a phone.)
In short this is going to make for some very nervous manufacturers when this emerges as a product.Very simple to construct.

Nice work.  The reverse rivet (hole instead of nub) effect works pretty well.  It's a very effective illusion.

Defintiely a clever way to add the kind of surface detail that card kits sometimes lack.
Title: Re: [LaserCutCard] New Artillery releases
Post by: LaserCutCard on August 10, 2016, 08:45:20 AM
Where to begin?

This is our single biggest product release to date and there is a LOT to cover, so please bear with us.

Firstly, the Na-To Tractor

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/na-to-tractor-08-300x215.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/na-to-tractor-08.jpg)

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/na-to-tractor-06-300x125.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/na-to-tractor-06.jpg)

This is a modification of the Na-To chassis with wheel armour. A key point here (we will come back to it below) is that

- the sides can fold flat
- it has a tow hook on the back

Next - two new vehicle accessories.

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/vehicle-servoarm-01-300x125.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/vehicle-servoarm-01.jpg)
The Servo Arm takes the drudgery out of the heavy lifting, and can be attached to any vehicle

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/vehicle-spade-02-300x225.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/vehicle-spade-02.jpg)
The Bulldozer Blade can be attached to the front or back of most vehicles (when at the back it can represent a recoil spade)

And now on to the main event... three new artillery pieces.

All the artillery pieces come with various barrels that can be swapped out between games.

The first artillery piece is the vehicle mounted artillery

This is just the gun plus a plate that can be glued onto the back of any flatbed (but which is specifically designed for the Na-To chassis or tractor)

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/artillery_mounted05-300x190.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/artillery_mounted05.jpg)
Here we see the first barrel option - the battle cannon

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/artillery_mounted04-300x272.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/artillery_mounted04.jpg)
This is the siege mortar barrel

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/artillery_mounted03-300x219.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/artillery_mounted03.jpg)
By combining the two we get a super mega big cannon

The next artillery piece is the fixed emplacement. This comes on a sturdy tripod mount.

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/artillery_fixed_04-300x204.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/artillery_fixed_04.jpg)
Again, all three barrel options are included in this kit

And finally - probably the best model we have produced to date - Big Bertha (the wheeled artillery kit)

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/bertha10-300x231.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/bertha10.jpg)

This is our favourite kit so far. It went through quite a bit of revision and input from a lot of people to get to this stage but the results speak for themselves.

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/bertha11-300x160.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/bertha11.jpg)

It comes with the servo arm accessory included and can be upgraded to include a Na-To tractor at a big discount

The servo arm is fully posable during building and it was very easy to modify the kit to show this dynamic loading scene.

I hope the pictures can do this model justice - please click on them for bigger versions.

This is a model we have been working on for some time and are proud to finally release it.
The scendship is a high altitude VTOL vehicle capable of dropping down from orbit and then taking off and returning.
Since it can ascend and descend, it is... the scendship (thanks to Iain M Banks for the name)
It represents the safest and most economical way to
- drop your troops into combat from orbit
- escape from the top of your arcology before the assassins get you
- hop between theatres of combat delivering chaotic war engines and tainted troops (spikes not included)

The engine pods are mounted on swivels that can move, and feature locking pins in case the engines become loose over time.

Wow!  I've got no use for a droppod, but that is a darned impressive kit.  The more I see of your work, the more I think that card -or more likely multi-media (Card/MDF/Rod/Corrugated)- kits are going to be the way of the future for lasercut models.  Layered card just looks more realistic than MDF in almost every situation that I've seen.

WOW - a great scratch-built model.

Wow.

How about some of those great Cold War era Soviet trucks and tracked vehicles for our post-apoc. games?
The Na-To really reminds me of this (https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ2pvWRCcTqvWhk8qU7Frs8XM_cRR6vq7oMnUCAgU5A4e1K2nVj).

Make way for the Mother Of All Tanks!

See the tank in the store here: http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/vehicles/great-war (http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/vehicles/great-war)

This is a 1/48 scale model of perhaps one of the most recognisable tanks of all time... the 1917 Mk IV British tank.

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_12b-300x200.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_12b.jpg)

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_13-300x196.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_13.jpg)

The basic kit will let you create a generic Mk IV tank but there are some interesting optional upgrades if you like your tanks grimmer and darker...

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_21-300x221.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_21.jpg)

The turret upgrade lets you make a model very close to the Mk VIII tank featured in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_24-300x130.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_24.jpg)

But why stop there? The extra sponson set adds a front sponson and comes with three heavy bolt guns (one for the front sponson and two to replace the side sponson guns)

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_22-300x167.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_22.jpg)

Finally, there are three alternative turret guns (the main turret guns can be magnetised to easily swop them out)

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_23-300x207.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk_iv_23.jpg)

Next in line is the FT17 and the A7V and that is all we have planned for the moment.

*Edit* Of course, if these three tanks sell, we will do more  :D

Today we release the Gothic Bastion Shrine - a great piece of terrain for your imperial homeworld.

Featuring rose windows, gothic arches and just a touch of firepower, this building projects just the right mix of salvation and purgatory.

The basic kit includes the 4 gun turrets shown in the image

Gothic Shrine Add-ons

The basic kit is upgradable to a "sisters" version by adding fleur-de-lis details. This upgrade set includes new door arches, new window frames and a replacement for the eagle.

Weapons Add-ons

You can add a quad cannon to the shrine to give you some support against flying and skimming units

This kit is made from 1mm heavy card and comes in a flat pack unpainted and unassembled.

Instructions are included in the kit

The basic design features rose windows and doors on two sides, and gothic arched windows on the other two

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine02-222x300.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine02.jpg)

Each side is capped by the symbol of the eagle

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine03-207x300.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine03.jpg)

There are optional gun sponsons for each side too

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine04-300x226.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine04.jpg)

The roof is big enough to hold an entire squad with easy

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine-sisters01-191x300.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine-sisters01.jpg)

The fleur-de-lis version adds some softer details by replacing the harsh eagle with scrollwork

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine-sisters02-187x300.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine-sisters02.jpg)

Each door and window is also topped with a small fleur-de-lis symbol

(http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine-sisters03-218x300.jpg) (http://lasercutcard.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/shrine-sisters03.jpg)

With a bit of extra detailing, the fleur-de-lis version would not be out of place in any time ranging from King Arthur to the far future

Dang, that is nice!

Not something I particularly need, but I hope it sells well for you.  It's certainly got a ton of utility in a grimdark setting.
