Title: A GI Joe Project WIP - Ninja Viper WIP Page 4
Post by: Jonas on November 23, 2013, 05:34:21 PM
I guess it was just a matter of time before I would start a GI Joe project. As a kid my favourite toys was always GI Joe (or Action Force, as it was called in Denmark to begin with). I still love GI Joe and I still have a pretty large collection of the toys and I bought the re-released comic books.

The most exciting characters for me was and is the ninjas and during the original run of the comic they kind of took over a lot of the stories. So it was natural for me to start there and I have had some ninjas lying around for a couple of years now.

So to start off I painted some Perry Miniatures ninjas as Arashikage ninjas. The red mercenary ninjas which most of the time work for Cobra, sometimes through Storm Shadown, other times through Firefly and so forth.

I converted one of them to have an uzi, since they are modern ninjas and often are seen pictured with uzi throughout the stories they participate in.

The first time they appear is in the classic silent story, where they work for Storm Shadow. But up against Snake Eyes they don't stand a chance.

That is all the models I have for now, but hopefully I will get some more for Christmas or else I will buy some more next year.

So far I have plans for Firefly. Originally he was not a ninja, but in the later stories he turns out to be the Faceless Master, an outsider who was allowed to study the arts with the Arashikage clan.

I think the RAFM USX Modern Ronin is perfect for Firefly. I have seen others use him too and since that model has an uzi too it fits well with the saboteur past of Firefly.

Then I will need a Storm Shadow. I don't know yet what side he will be on, but the classic set up would make him a Cobra ninja. Which of course is not really correct all the time, but I guess that is what most people think of him.

I think the Reaper Dragon Clan Ninja will be a good Storm Shadow.

But I guess almost any ninja painted white would do fine. But I consider painting him in one of his later camo ninja suits.

Another ninja I will need is Kim Arashikage, code name Jinx. She is most famously pictured as a red ninja and it would fit well with her Arashikage heritage.

I had a kind of hard time finding a female ninja with the hood on, but eventually I decided that Oko from Hasslefree would be great for the job.

I will probably try and sculpt a bit on the hood, to make it pointy like in the comic book. And i might consider painting her white, since that is how she looks the first time we meet her or I could go with the bold Tiger Force green and orange.

Of course I will also need a Snake Eyes, but so far I have not found a model I like. I know about the Reaper one, but he is no good for me.

I would really want the old classic looks.

I guess it should be possible to find a model, but no luck so far, so I am open to suggestions.

Quite a likeness,I used to to  love my action force figures,I had the gi Joe battery operated tank, where you operated it via the small turret, but zartan with the swamp skimmer was my favorite .

COBRA!  :D

Looks like you drawn some good inspiration for your project so far.  I also always liked the Arashikage ninjas and ended up using the old Citadel ninjas.  Good choices for Storm Shadow, Firefly and Jinx (I used the same models for my Storm Shadow and Firefly) but never got around to a Jinx model.

Of course I will also need a Snake Eyes, but so far I have not found a model I like. I know about the Reaper one, but he is no good for me.

That Reaper Chronoscope Snake-Eyes model is pretty good, especially since you are trying to go with the original "goggles" look (over the "visor" look that I wanted).

Pathfinder does a female ninja with a pointy hood that might work for Jinx.  She's armed to the teeth, but might work.

I have seen your thread and it is really lovely, it is one of the projects that inspired me to start out with my own.

I think the Reaper guy looks more like Snake Eyes V3. But also I just don't really like the sculpt, so for now he is a no go for me.

Snake Eyes V3.

and shall forever be known in the hearts of many.... Ironblood was a much better villain than a used car salesman.

Well UK Action Force and Danish Action Force is not really the same I am afraid. Danish Action Force is the same as US GI Joe, but just given another name. Later they changed the name to GI Joe The Action Force and later again just GI Joe.

Pathfinder does a female ninja with a pointy hood that might work for Jinx.  She's armed to the teeth, but might work.

I did see that ninja too, but again I just don't think she would work for me. The suit seems to have too many odd details to really do the job. For now I will try and go with Oko and see how it ends up. But thanks for the suggestion.

Post by: D@rth J@ymZ on November 23, 2013, 06:28:59 PM
Yeah, I think the Reaper model looks like a hybrid of versions 1 and 3, the armour of v1 with the head of v3.  But from what I've seen, he's the closest thing out there for Snake-Eyes.  It might be hard to find a suitable substitute but I'm interested to see what you come up with.

I agree with the Oko choice for Jinx.  The best part of the Pathfinder female Reiko ninja is the head, I agree.  The rest of the model is too armed and detailed to make a good Jinx.

Keep us all posted on your progress, GI Joe/Action Force seems to resonate well with this crowd so I'm sure you'll get lots of useful feedback. :)

Indeed.  :D
and for those toys that we can't find in miniature version, we can make! This was exactly what happened when I made my Trouble Bubble and Rattler vehicles. I had the actual toys in front of me when I made the models, now they are on display beside each other!

This is the link to my thread of G.I.Joe goodness. I haven't done much with the project lately, but that might change soon.

The Shapeways store that I use is Arctic Skunk.

Ah, yeah, another thread which has inspired me much for my project.

I might get some of those H.I.S.S. tanks too at some point, they look great. But I think I will start in the small and get some of the characters done first and see where it leads me.

Cobra, Modern Ninja from Reaper

I know, I know  ;D But there is just something not right about that model... for now I will keep looking for a better model, but maybe I will end up with the Reaper dude anyway.

If I eventually go the Reaper way I will have to do some converting on the head and the pistol deffinately needs to be changed for an uzi...

It really does seem like the uzi is the weapon of choice for a modern GI Joe (or Cobra) ninja.

And thanks for all the comments guys  :)

Have you seen the new Crossover Miniatures Ninjas?

Also, the line has a "Ninja Boss"..

They come with variable heads, the set has one option and the Ninja Boss has another..

Yup, very cool.  I thought "Foot Clan" from the first time that I saw these.  But the head options make them pretty versatile as any type of ninja.  I would need to find a suitable Shredder or Krang model to go with though... ;)

Anyways, enough thread hijacking.  I think the Crossover ninjas would work well even mixed in with some of the other lines (Perry etc.)  Has anyone done any size comparisons?

Of course these are from the 80's, so they aren't the easiest things to find. They were made by a company called Dark Horse. Believe it or not, the miniatures company pre-dates the comic book company of the same name.

So my GI Joe adventures continue. I was so lucky to get a couple of Hasslefree miniatures as an early Christmas gift from my wife.

The miniatures I got was Oko, which I wanted to turn into Kim Arashikage, codename Jinx and I got Oakley, who obviously is Ash from the Evil Dead movies. I don't know what Ash will be used for, but for now I found a use for his spare katana.

My converted Jinx size up well with the red ninjas.

A katana had to do when I didn't have a nakinata.

Comparison shot of the original vs. my converted model.

The photo seems to have been taken from a not so good angle, I actually think my conversion work on the hood looks better in real life. But I have no doubt that once painted red no one will doubt who she is.

Maybe I will try and do a black dragon on her chest, but I can't promise that it will be good.

Thanks.

I never saw the cartoons as a kid, my parents were hippies, so we only had 1 TV chanel and no VCR  lol

Luckily my dad collected comic books and had no problems with me getting the GI Joe comics, so I found most early inspiration there and in playing with the action figures, the file cards had valueable info too.

Now I bought the collected series of the old magazine run and some of the new stuff too. Some of the new stuff is pretty cool, but I mostly stick to the old 80s and start 90s stuff. That works for me.

Don't get me started on the movies though... So... Much... Inaccuracy...

Same goes for the new Transformers movies, terrible.... But maybe I should hunt down some 28mm Transformers to co-up with GI Joe, it ceartainly worked fine in the comic.

Anyone doing some 28mm Transformers?  :D

You mean the movies in which the first one involves flying a plane and shouting to shoot? We had to, albeit very much under the influence, rewind that scene 10 times, because we were sure that he shouted a very popular neonazi sentence.

I decided on painting Jinx red after all. I am sure most people know her like that and I think I will be most happy about this in the long run anyway.

Showdown at the Arashikage temple.

The first time Jinx appears in the GI Joe comic books is in issue #59 in 1987, at first she wears a white ninja suit, but her looks is not really consistant for a long time, sometimes she has long hair, sometimes short, sometimes she wears a hood, sometimes not and sometimes she is also just in civilian clothes.

The first time Jinx is wearing her red ninja suit is on the cover of #91 in 1989, this is also the first time she is wearing a pointy hood. But inside the comic she doesn't have the pointy hood yet, but she is dressed in red.

Finally in #111 in 1991 she looks like the first carnation of her action figure; red ninja suit and the pointy hood. The action figure had been around since 1987, so it is kind of strange that it took so long for the comic book to adapt, but I guess it is not that important.

All this time she is mainly still using swords, so I think my choice of giving her a sword was a good idea. She is also using an uzi in issue #111, but I doubt that many people connect her with such a weapon.

So what we have at this point (in the comic) is Jinx in her red ninja suit and pointy hood, Storm Shadow is wearing white with camo and Billy has taken over Storm Shadows old suit. Snake Eyes is of course still wearing black and Scarlett is back to wearing her old costume after she had been jumping around in a white ninja suit for some time (mostly unhooded, but sometimes with hood).

Then there is still Firefly who is revealed to be the Faceless Master in a later issue, that is fine, but I will paint him in his old style. I doubt that I want Slice, Dice, Nightcreepers or the Ninja Squad, but I guess time will tell.

Down to the last renegade ninja.

So far I am pleased with how Jinx and the Arashikage ninjas turned out. I might need to go back and do a little work on the left eye on Jinx or other minor touch ups, but I am happy about my painting and converting on these models.

And once again I have run out of GI Joe miniatures, so hopefully I will get some more during Christmas and if that fails I will buy a couple to paint in January.

Same goes for the new Transformers movies, terrible.... But maybe I should hunt down some 28mm Transformers to co-up with GI Joe, it ceartainly worked fine in the comic.

Anyone doing some 28mm Transformers?  :D

you could try the Heroes of Cybertron/Super Collection Figures line, here's a shot of Convoy (Optimus Prime) with a 28mm mini(an old 40K assassin who BTW would look great as a GIJOE ninja), looks about right to me. They don't transform, but do look a lot closer to their comic/cartoon counterparts than most transformer toys

That does look like a good size. Maybe I will get a couple of these at some point.

The assassin could maybe be a good GI Joe ninja, but the combiwepon would have to go and I am not much for hacking into oop models. But I am getting a second copy of that model any day now, so might consider using him.

As a kid my favourite toys was always GI Joe (or Action Force, as it was called in Denmark to begin with). I still love GI Joe and I still have a pretty large collection of the toys and I bought the re-released comic books.

I still have a box full of Action Force SAS in my loft!

I have a pretty big collection lying around here too, but only the GI Joe, the Action Force we got was the same as GI Joe, just called Action Force here.

I am still buying a few vintage figures now and then and I have been shopping around ebay, a couple of years ago, to get those I missed as a kid.

I collect to much stuff, if you ask my wife  :D

Wish I had time to get cracking on my own G.I. Joe project.  :)

I just made a blog update about my G.I. Joe project, but I will post it in full here too:

So it was probably about time I got some more done with my G.I. Joe project. For some time I have been working a bit on and off with everything, but the G.I. Joe project was  never forgotten, it has just been a bit dormant lately.

I have been buying a few new miniatures which I wanted to use, some didn't fit in, while other will need a little work.

The latest miniature I painted was Storm Shadow. Storm Shadow is another of my favourite characters from the comic book series. Some times he works for Cobra, other times for the Joes and most of the times probably for his own clandestine agenda.

I had some trouble finding a miniature I liked to represent him. There was the ninja from Reaper Miniatures, but I was never really sure about that one. So one day when I looked at the old Citadel ninja range I decided to get one of them for my Storm Shadow. it took some time, but I got him and when he arrived in the mail I quickly decided he was just too small in scale and with his crouching pose he looked even smaller compared to the Perry Miniatures ninjas.

Eventually I decided to try and put him on a taller base and I really think it worked out well. I decided to paint him in the V2 camouflage suit. I always liked a ninja in camouflage and in this carnation he could work with the Joes.

Storm Shadow and Jinx is ambushed by their renegade ninja clan.

Storm Shadow vs Red Ninja Leader.

I still think he looks a bit small, but he is Japanese after all, so it is ok and putting him on the scenic base really helped out. For now he is my G.I. Joe version of Storm Shadow. Later I will probably add a Cobra version, but for now he even out the odds with Jinx and Storm Shadow on the Joe side and five Arashikage ninjas on the Cobra side.

Some W.I.P. and scale shot.

Other than that I am also working on a Scarlett and Timber. Both are from Reaper Miniatures. I have filed and sculpted a bit on Scarlett. When she is done I will do a blog post about her.

My version of Scarlett is inspired by one on the Mini-Ventures Blog (http://mini-ventures.blogspot.dk/2013/01/scarlett.html), a blog with loads of great stuff if you are into G.I. Joe. I plan to take a lot more of the ideas from there and use them on my own project. After all imitation is the sincerest form of flattery (I hope).

Nice work - scale-wise Storm Shadow looks good.

Thanks. And yes, I agree, it looks acceptable now, but without the base it would have been a mess.

Scarlett on the other hand.... she is a giant  lol

Just scratch-built a giant bucket half filled with water, cut her legs off at the knees and glue her onto the bucket. Simple!

This one is probably pretty obscure. He was never in any comic or tv show (as far as i know), but I still wanted to paint one. He is still WIP mind you, but I thought I would post anyway.

The mint green Ninja Viper. he was a mailorder only action figure. Pretty rare and I always wanted one, still do.

He will probably not be in any games. The old Citadel ninjas are awesome, but small, which is also one of the reasons why I chose this dude to be a Ninja Viper.
