Well, it was inevitable really... After seeing HvM's splendid orcs (and Franks earlier thread) I had to get my riders out.
Five were already done and three had been very briefly started but I've primed a lot more that I'll tackle when I'm able.
Hand painted flag which I'm rather chuffed about :)

I'll make some terrain of course but not for a short while yet.
We'll be looking into modding Sharp Practice for the bigger games but Saga has been mentioned so well give it a go as well :)

Splendid stuff, especially the flag ;D
Looking forward to our first game, it will be a nice diversion from our usual ramblings ;)
-
Normally I'm not a fan of the high-contrast paint style, but your riders look like they should be in a museum :-*
-
Geez, Jimbo...
How many projects are you working on?
Very nice cavalry, btw.. ;D
-
Great stuff, James. Must start my own set sooner or later ... ;D
-
With so much great LotR-stuff around I really feel obliged to do something about my slumbeing Ithilien project. Your painting is really nice, very bold yet not too much so (rambling on for hours trying to find the right words). Anyway, great pics, great paintjob, excellent all around.
-
Glad to see LotR getting some new wind. It's an old love of mine.
-
Many thanks chaps :)
The original photos were played with ever so slightly in phototoaster to help enhance them but not too much :)
No idea for the next update but this project will continue as Nick already has a sizeable force ready to go ;D
cheers
James

Very nice! Makes me want to go to the attic and look for my lotr minis :)

He didn't until I persuaded him and he bought a load off eBay lol

You should be proud of that flag! Those riders look seriously ready for business.
Great stuff!

James
Yep, that about sums it up ::) lol
-
Beautiful work.
The only criticism I have are the bases. Has the photography given them that high contrast, or do they need a bit of touching up (as opposed to feeling up, which I want to do to them anyway)?
-
Sweet!!!
:D
They are looking really good, mate, and one of the 'new' LotR groups that I do like the look of.
Lovely paintwork.
I had better get a move on with my Gondor force.
I am starting to get the idea that we should have a massive LotR game at BLAM....plenty of time for everyone to paint something up and contribute towards it.
What do you reckon?
;)

Not quite sure which bit in particular you're on about ???

;)
It's an idea certainly...
;)

See attached. I realise some people dry brush the lip of their bases with the base colour, but the below looks too messy compared to the rest of the miniatures themselves.
However, it may be the light which has created an artificially harsh contrast.
-
Great!
I really like them as they capture the spirit of Rohan very well. Nice colours and painting style.
I also like the bases, they also fit into that Rohan Riders style.
Hope to see more!
I´m dangeroursly fascinated by the SAGA-LotR stuff from Frank as well.
Maybe will get into that as well with some humans (Fiefdoms or Minas Tirith), later...
Keep it coming.
Cheers
Dr. Moebius
-
Nicely done and tempting me back to doing some royal guard for my small force (which for some reason Dr V doesn't like playing lol lol)
-
Yep, that about sums it up ::) lol
Cool beans. I should bring a lot to the next BLAM. I have a sizeable Rohan force. I also have the fellowship plus enough uruk-hai raiders to play the Amon Hen scenario. It's a very uncomplicated and well contained scenario.

They look great! Bases and all. :-*

Lovely stuff, keeping the pics as inspiration for when I start my own Riders.

Thanks again chaps :)

I see what you mean now. The drybrushing of the edge was intentional but probably rushed. I might stipple them instead, it should help to blend them in a bit more :)

I initially read that as 'wood worm effect'...made me think of Woodworm Jim....., no, sorry, that was Earthworm Jim, wasn't it...?
::)
-
The Riders certainly look the part of dashing cavalrymen. Your OUTSTANDING brushwork, the SPLENDID freehand & (with the exception of the minor flaws on the edges) bases make for some FINE pieces. VERY WELL DONE!
-
They look great jimbbbly!
:-*
I really must improve my painting.

... same. These riders are inspirational James. So smooth and delicate colours. I need to slow down and use thinner paint.

Just a couple of small bits of terrain for a test game on Thursday.
As ever, not the best pictures and I'm not convinced by the column style (I blame peer pressure ::) lol ).

Why the long face James?* I think the columns look great! The undergrowth basing is superb.
*see first picture lol

Really like the small terrain pieces that you made. Beautiful greenery on those bases!
-
Great job, Jim! :-*
-
Thanks chaps :)
Not much really but I'm looking into making some more themed terrain soon.

Join us!!!!!!!! ;D
I must get on with my LOTR stuff at some stage. Where's the flocking etc from bud?
-
Yeah, baby, yeah!
I just recently dug out my painted LotR minis to build some SAGA warbands - so this is just the right water on my mill :D
Is the base for the statue a mini CD or plywood?
-
Great stuff, mate.
Nice looking bit of filler.
:-*
I have some of those LotR scenery bits already made up for my own go at this, which I shall be revisiting and starting properly next month.
It seems you timing is impeccable, my dear.
Perfect for me to nick all your good ideas.
:D
Just a couple of small bits of terrain for a test game on Thursday.
Good to see you turning the others to the Dark Side..... :D ;)
-
EXCELLENT atmospheric terrain! I love the sapling growing between the sections of broken column; it adds an Ozymandias touch to the piece. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks again chaps :)

No, all e recent posts are the accumulation of several weeks all rolled into one. I start back next week :?

It's lasered 2mm acrylic.

Very nice looking terrain. A Job more than well done, I'd say. :)
-
Very nicely painted minis and some excellent terrain there Jim.
-
Great looking figures. I really like how you did the shield on the flag bearer. Basing is wonderful as well. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks chaps :)
We had a little bash with the basic GW LotR rules the other night and I think we like them. We'll try again with the more advanced rules and some possible modding (turn sequence, units).
A couple of pictures below of a quick, throw together game. No real report as such, just proof that the figures are getting used ;)
It was a win for the goodies :D

Very nice sir... :D
I should dig out the 60 plus rohan I have one day
-
Very nice, mate.
:-* :-*
LotR seems to be getting a lot more popular these days.
I see Sherwood Village travels well.
;)
-
I painted mine up back in 2005 !
-
Note the non regulation bases on the Gondorians and was it eight Riders of Rohan? ;)
-
Non regulation? Aren't you all happy you play in a club then and not a GW tournament with gentlemen's agreements about these things... Isn't that right Mamma... ;)
Smashing James. Looks just the part, I much prefer small fast paced games to longer battles.
Cheers
Matt
-
Very nice matey. My next big push after my rogue trooper project will be back to my LOTR stuff, (which I have mountains of). ;)
-
I don't find the LOTR rules very pleasing, but that table is frikkin' marvelous! You could even convince me to play LOTR if I got to shove minis around on that! :D
-
Nice photos of nice figures and nice terrain. What more can I say? Nice. ;)
-
Awesome!! :-*

LOTR!
I was not notified?!
This will go in the book.
Looks good mate! You always put on a happy beer game.

Really nice work James, but eight men won't hold the Westfold!!
By the way, you're a git, I just went and found all my Lotr figures in the shed. :(
Can I come and play now?
Edited: due to my inability to count.. ::)

You can play any time you like mate :)

I'll hold you to that. :D

I'll hold you to that. :D
I'm finding it hard to resist, I added to my Orcs with thirty odd Uruk Hai last week and have just won a Nazgul on EBay and am bidding on a Saruman at present. lol
-
I've just won Theodred on eBay. ::)
I found the remnants of my battle of the ford project. I was going to do a conversion of Theodred but now find out 'they' produced one anyway. :D Still need to sculpt a helmet on him. I've also found quite a few Rohan characters. ;D
Found the bad guys too, a mix of Uruk hai scouts, orcs and feral men. Need some more Wargs.

Turning this into a generic LotR thread as it'll be better than spamming the board with multiple threads.
Due to an unbelievable amount of peer pressure I started making a hobbit hole (phnar phnar).
I don't have any hobbits (and I'm not going to ;D) so I guessed at about 25mm for the door and used one of my bases for a templete.
Some wood and styrene stone work later, with the little addition of some of my Victorian round windows we have the start of a very presentable des-res in the quiet corner of Middle Earth :D

Love the start of the eloquent bridge! ;)
-
Nice hole. ;) lol
-
That is a BEAUTIFUL start. I love the curved woodwork & the different angles of the stones. I'm looking forward to the ideas I can shamelessly steal for non-Hobbit projects. SO keep up the FINE WORK & make an Old Man happy...or not.
By the way, your user name goes perfectly with the song Bo Jangles. I only mention that because I can't get it to stop playing through my mind...such as it is.
-
That's a great start, mate.
Like a really posh version of mine.

Looking forward to seeing where you go with this one.

Edoras is one ot the 'larger' locations that worked for my vision of Middle Earth.
That, the Shire and Rivendell all hit the mark for me.
Go for it, Bibbles.
Ya know you want to.... :D*
*It would be generic enough as Dark Ages scenery to justify the effort.
-
lol
Edoras is one ot the 'larger' locations that worked for my vision of Middle Earth.
I agree. The details of its construction was pretty detailed in the books so it seems to have created a pretty clear and shared impression on most readers (unlike the balrog).

Yes, you are. Getting involved with LotR without a specific Goal in mind means you're in for life... here are worse things to do I guess.
Anyway, I'm much impressed with the Hobbit hole so far. :)
-
But, but, but....
Edoras could work as a lot of smaller elements fitting together.
You could start with some small rohan inspired dark age structures to build some frontier villages/farming settlements and go from there. Honest. For a man of your talents, a week, two maximum. ;)
::)

Great project, James. Can we have a shrubbery?

Wow, this alone makes me want to do a LOTR project! Smashing as always Jim! Quick question, I thought his door was green?

For the grass - do it in patches; slightly different colours and lengths.

I have some tips to if you need them.

Nope, just this for now ;D
Can we have a shrubbery?
With a little path running down the middle and a two tiered effect? Of course :D

Seriously, I only ask because Jim is such a prolific and talented builder that I figured he did not need my presumably trivial advice.

Longbottom Leaf? (I'll get my fez, now...)
-
Holy son of a ... :o
This looks great!
What are the flowers, they look so real!
-
Absurdly good...but honestly is anyone surprised when JimBibbly starts on something? I didn't think so.
-
That works. ;D
-
It's a bit patchy, Bilbo needs to get Sam to do some weeding and lawn maintenance.
:D
Looking good.
Cheers
Matt

That looks great! The grass is perfect. :-*

Gorgeous!
Needs some sheep lol

lol
Cracking work there Jim :-*
-
Bloody good, mate.
:-* 8) :-*
Do you want to borrow my flymo?
:D
-
Holy crap! Using so much grass must be costing you a bundle. Damned if it isn't worth it with results like that!
-
Thanks chaps :)
Yeah, it'll cost a bit but so what :D
I'm going to put a couple of trees on the top or a round one of the sides and some bushes but no sheep ;D
What are the flowers, they look so real!
Mininature purple ones although I think I might have a go making my own as they are a bit too regular :?
cheers
James
-
As I said, you don't need my help. :-)
Let me just add that the principle for wild lush grass (as opposed to cropped or cut) is to keep it taller and darker around trees and rocks, in dells and and ditches. Where it is worn, flat and dry it should be flatter and more yellow. To alternate between these two makes for a very natural look. Which is pretty much what you have achieved.
I have some pic examples and grass product brands I use but my web hotel is giving me trouble so I can't post them right now.
-
Rather spiffing :-*
(Many tufts died to bring us this hobbit hole)
-
Lovely mate! :-*
Where's the long grass from? I need a square mile or so further on for the Herring project :)
-
Nice grassy hole. ::)
-
Nice mate! Those trees you talk of will really make that look the dogs danglies!
-

Thank you kindly chaps :)
More grass added but it does get a bit boring after a while ::)

Whats all this talk about flowers and shrubs and stuff?
Ya big Southern Jessie!
:D
Anyway, have you got time to mess about with poncy flowers and stuff?
Shouldn't you be spending your time on Mars....?
::)

Wow! Jim, another fantastic project!

Lovely mate! But the interior...?

Yep, tick, tock, tick, tock :D

Can I go on record and say I have no wish to peer into the dark recesses if Jim's hairy hobbit hole.
;)

I need display peices to go in the cabinet for Salute ;D
cheers

I love it James!
Just like I would build it to be honest. To really capture the spirit of Hobbitton you need to play more around with height differences.

Planted all the grass and painted the fence, the only thing left now are the trees, a few pot plants and a couple of gardening tools :D

Bloody gorgeous.
:-*
All those tufts!
:o
You mad bugger.
You sure that you are not at least a little bit Viking?
o_o o_o
-
That's a lot of tufts, but worth it mate! :-* :-* :-*
Could you not have used teddy bear fur for the grass?
-
Many tufts died to bring us this hobbit hole...
;)
Bootiful
-
Many thanks chaps :)
You sure that you are not at least a little bit Viking?
There is a good chance of considering my birth place, height and eye colour :D
Could you not have used teddy bear fur for the grass?
Thought about it and have done it in the past with satisfactory results but didn't actually think of it for this ::) lol
cheers
James

Jimmy the Squirrel or Tufty? You choose, either way you have a new nickname :)
Looks marvellous but I wince at the work involved sticking all of them on
-
Seriously great stuff James! :D
-
Aha!
Planted all the grass and painted the fence, the only thing left now are the trees, a few pot plants and a couple of gardening tools :D
. . . and some Hobbits to defend it from the marauding Orcses! :)
-
That is just BEAUTIFUL...FANTASTICALLY WELL DONE!
-
That's rather cute! :-* :-* It will be bonkers when finished James.
Not to mention the rest of hobbiton ;). A hobbit never lives alone you know, unless he's one of dem strange folks across the river.
Cheers
Matt
-
Looks great, Jim!
-
Lovely work Jim,
I plan on several of these myself for my own Hobbiton build... wonderful inspiration :-)
-
Many thanks for the replies chaps :)
Quite possibly more 'holes' to follow but I'll be moving onto some Gondorian architecture next :)
cheers
James
-
Lush! 8)
-
Still need to plant trees and bushes on the hole but I've made a start on some simple Gondorian architecture (ever the butterfly :D ).
I've decided to make the buildings from blue foam blocks as opposed to the scoring method. Longer in the long run no doubt but hopefully a more pleasing effect.
The blocks are 10mm x 10mm x 20mm for the basic ones and other will be cut as necessary. Always best to keep them organised :D
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Lord%20of%20the%20Rings/Gondor/8594DE1A-AE13-4D3C-8815-04660C556764_zpsyfoemsdc.jpg)
I think I'm going to make a series of simple MDF jigs to help hold the bits in place whilst gluing.

I think for the fancier bits I'll be making one or two from foam and then casting them but we'll see :)
cheers
James
-
Looking forward to seeing it finished ;)
-
Looking very cool James - love the individual block approach.
BTW - your Hobbit hole looks amazing (don't take that comment as a having a double meaning please) lol
You have too MANY threads to keep up with. o_o

Thanks chaps :)

Gondor and individual blocks :o
Jimbo my dear, I think you've lost it... ;)

Coolio :-*

Nice!
Doesn't feel very generic anymore though. I mean, relly, Gondor?
-
Gondor and individual blocks :o
Jimbo my dear, I think you've lost it... ;)
And there was me thinking he was making a start on Minas Tirith ... in its entirety - block-by-block lol

Great stuff, mate.
Individual blocks, though.......Bonkers!
o_o o_o
Gondor and individual blocks :o
Jimbo my dear, I think you've lost it... ;)
He certainly has, mate.
Somewhere between Mars, Japan and Gondor apparently.....
And there was me thinking he was making a start on Minas Tirith ... in its entirety - block-by-block lol
Dont give him ideas....he is just mad enough to contemplate it.
:D
-
Thank chaps ;)
Doesn't feel very generic anymore though. I mean, relly, Gondor?
I'll change it just for you then ;D
Dont give him ideas....he is just mad enough to contemplate it.
:D
Already have done although it would be too big... But a part of it might be nice and don't forget that Minas Tirith was only the principle city of Gondor, there should be at least a few more that would be worthy of some walls, towers, gateways etc :D :D :D
With regard to the blocks, it does seem easier to my mind in constructing this type of building although longer than just simply scoring. Let's just say its more of a whim method than a practicality ;)
cheers
James
-
And there was me thinking he was making a start on Minas Tirith ... in its entirety - block-by-block lol
I though they were the same.
Bloody silly book that no one in their right mind reads... >:(
-
Bloody silly book that no one in their right mind reads... >:(
Go and wash your mouth out with soap ;D
Anyway ;)
Going for a square watchtower/lighthouse for the first build to keep it simple and will get more complecated with each building hopefully.
The lighthouse at Linhir...

Very nice!
Say now, what's that tower in the background?
-
Nice :-* :-* :-*
But it looks like a very slow way of building. What glue do you use?
-
Thanks chaps :)
Say now, what's that tower in the background?
This one mate ;) Pathan tower (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=67419.0)
But it looks like a very slow way of building. What glue do you use?
The blocks are slow to cut out but putting them together is quick, in sections. It's allowing me to do a little before work and a little bit inbetween other stuff without feeling that I haven't really done anything, which for me is a bonus :)
Just normal wood glue and jigs for sticking.
cheers
James
-
That looks splendid!!!
How resilient is that blue crap?
Will it dent and crack!?
-
How resilient is that blue crap?
Will it dent and crack!?
It certainly dents, that's the idea but it doesn't really crack unless you push hard on one of the sealed/melted edges that it comes with.
I've sealed it with a textured goop and will finish off a colour sample tomorrow :)
cheers
James
-
Finished a colour sample this morning...

I think the base needs to be a bit darker but seems to work ok.

Got the bottom floor done and I'll make a start on the upper tomorrow :)

Looks great and you'v finished it off very quickly too.

Gawd blimey, Guvnor!
That was quick.
:o
Looks lovely, mate.

Looking forward to seeing the 'upstairs' installed.

There'll be a small roof tile section between them and a foam done on top. The light will be a large brazier hung from the ceiling.

You, Sir, are way too productive at the moment! ;)
But it sure looks great. I wish I had that kind of dedication and patients for details.

Of course not James, your productions obviously reveal you are Handi-capable. :D
That spruce growing in the corner is an inspired touch James, takes me straight to Gondorian illustrations.

That spruce growing in the corner is an inspired touch James, takes me straight to Gondorian illustrations.
I think it was an Alan Lee illustration that inspired me, or if not that then so etching from before the films came out :)
Got the hatchway done into the top floor. I'll have to do the dome at work on the lathe and I'm still thinking of the best way to do the brazier ???

I think it may have been an Alan Lee Illo too. Well great minds think alike ;) You know if you capture the atmosphere of a Lee Gondor, then the models are going to be more than fantastic. :D
Cheers
Matt
-
Cheers gents :)
The problem with getting the feel of an Alan Lee illustration is the mountains in the background, usually covered in mist lol
Finished building the top floor and after doing a bit of research it would seem that the domes can be quie simple and a darker colour than the rest. Obviously there a different versions and these will be explored in the next build :)
Still got the intermediate roof to do and the brazier but we're nearly there :)

Nice James - really looks the part. :-*
I guess building things brick by brick is your new thing mate?
When do you start on Minas Tirith? :o

Looking great!

Thanks again gents :)

When do you start on Minas Tirith? :o
Bricks are the future lol and I've already kind of made a start... Kind of...

No lol
Finished the top of the tower, built the roof (needs paint) and made the brazier (again, needs paint).

I'm thinking I might do a swappable top that has simple, low battlements so the tower gets two uses ???
Also, I need some sensible suggestions for the next bit of terrain to do for LotR...
:D
cheers
James
-
It is a LOVELY creation. For moi, its the details you've added that make the piece shine. GREAT WORK!
-
Superb modelling, James! Interesting idea using single bricks, has the advantage to get all the joints correctly on all sides of a wall. Must give it a try ... ;D
-
Looking good, mate, very good.
Love the brazier and the bit of tiling breaking up all the stonework.
A nice touch.
8) :-* 8)
Now, do another 10 or so for Paul and his project ;)
No lol
lol lol lol
He would have time to do another ten or so before I get anything done for it as my painting mojo has upped gone lately....I will get back to that as soon as I get the urge to point a paintbrush at likkal men again.
-
now thats crazy good!
-
Gondorian toll house? Hexagonal stone building with a tower?
-
Lovely work Jim :-* :-* :-*
-
Yeah - very nice.
Maybe something connected with water next? Bridge, ferry crossing, well.
-
Jim - one idea for a swappable top is a ruined top. Easy and quick to make and then you can use it for some of Gondor's harder done by regions (Osgiliath, etc.)
-
Thanks for the replies and suggestions chaps :)
Interesting idea using single bricks, has the advantage to get all the joints correctly on all sides of a wall. Must give it a try ... ;D
It's strange really. This is the way to build real buildings but it really didn't occur to me until a short while ago to build models this way lol
Gondorian toll house? Hexagonal stone building with a tower?
Both, in a small compound would make a good peice of terrain without having to go overboard with buildings :) I'll credit you for it when I make my millions ;)
Maybe something connected with water next? Bridge, ferry crossing, well.
Well, I have a lighthouse so maybe a small port :)
Jim - one idea for a swappable top is a ruined top. Easy and quick to make and then you can use it for some of Gondor's harder done by regions (Osgiliath, etc.)
Yes, I like that. That'll give me three different tops, even more choices :D
Perhaps a bit more modularity in general would work, being able to swap over different bits here and there ???
cheers
James
-
Lovely jubbly jimmbly bibbly 8) :-*
-
Nice James. :D
What about a lighthouse/beacon keepers dwelling? A fairly small one person hovel, something that would fit with the story of the tower?
-
Smaller blocks for that one and will probable have a similar style to the beacon watch house in the third film :)
cheers

If you do one on a sandy (Harad) base, you could possibly double it up for Mars?
Portugese missionaries alongside the Japanese perhaps.
-
Nice! :-*
Oh no! More bricks!!!!!!! o_o
-
Cracking build! :-* I think I should cut me some of those blue bricks and just build something :)
-
Shamazing :D
-
Very nice. A few questions, which I suspect may have been answered at some point over the last 18 pages....
Is that standard blue insulation foam? (looks more like the stuff for window frames but could be the cut)
What size are the bricks and how are they cut?
Did you round them off before assembly? They look less precise in the build.
Did you texture them before painting? Looks like a fine sand or similar under the paint?
Cheers :D
-
An inspirational thread. That lighthouse is a stunning scratch-build.

Thanks again chaps :)
If you do one on a sandy (Harad) base, you could possibly double it up for Mars?
Portugese missionaries alongside the Japanese perhaps.
I'm afraid I'm too anal for that, especially the Japanese one.
I think I should cut me some of those blue bricks and just build something :)
Do it :D
Very nice. A few questions, which I suspect may have been answered at some point over the last 18 pages....
Of course ::) but as I'm such a nice chap...
It's standard blue foam that's precut into various sheet thicknesses, this one being 10mm and the sheet size is 600mm x 600mm.
The block size is 10mm x 10mm x 20mm, a good, standard size to use.
They have all been cut with an extending scalpel and a steady hand/eye.
They got bashed about after being cut.
A normal mix of masonry paint, filler and glue was painted on before colours were applied.
Anything else ::) ;D ;)
cheers
James

Lovely work :-*

Jim - one idea for a swappable top is a ruined top. Easy and quick to make and then you can use it for some of Gondor's harder done by regions (Osgiliath, etc.)
Nice. Gives u the White City intact and Osgiliath ruined etc...
Good call.
