I'm wondering... how could look a hut of an african tribal chief? It's too boring with a huge round one... Any ideas? Pics?
-
How about an oblong or rektangular shape with a 'gatehouse' (like on a celtic hut) on a long side?
-
I wish I could find a picture. I saw a program on one of the "good" channels and they were talking about a tribe in Africa. The head of the tribe actually had a mud brick wall that surrounded his hut.
I would think two huts with a wall that encompassed both.
-
Checking some of my books on African history I found a few quotes from diary's. These describe a tribal chief's house to be a collection of buildings within an enclosure of either wooden stakes (or the walls the Masai use) or, as Operator 5 stated, a mud brick wall.
I'll try to dig around some more, but for now this is all I can find. It seems that the main difference between the chief and the other people was that he had some sort of a recieving room and a wall to protect his compound.

Hi Pax, welcome aboard!
Thanks for hints, lads, i didnt know they made a wall around chief hut

Do you want to have it Pulp style or history ?

I would like to have a historical one, for my future Masai force...

If you want a real, proper Masai village then Grand Manner make one. Here's mine:

None of them look particularly like a "Chief's Hut" though. I'm not sure Masai have one big chief with his own big hut. I think they're governed by a council of elders and also take the advice of Holy Men. Being nomadic I don't think they tend to go in for big impressive structures, as before too long they're off to the next spot and would be leaving it behind.
If you're looking for something more Pulpish you could put a big impressive boma around one of the bigger huts for a chief's hut. Or scratch-build something bigger based on these.
Here's the link to Grand Manner, if you're interested:

I like this Grand Manner stuff, thanks for link. I'm not yet sure about Masai village, actually i wanted to make an african village i could use for the africa games and my first native force will be Masai. But good point, the nomadic nature of Masai and big villages dont fit well. Maybe i'm going to build a small historical one for Masai and later a big pulpish one.

The Grand Manner grass huts are much nicer than the Masai mud ones, to my mind. It's not Grand Manner's fault, it's just that Masai huts aren't very interesting.
I bought a few more generic huts for all my other tribes. I noticed they do Zulu ones now, too. And modular fencing. Might get some of that.
Here's my generic village:

yes, they do look much better, the classical african native design :)
The Zulu ones of Grand Manner are very nice too. Does anyone know any painted Zulu galleries on internet?

Ok make the tribal chief hut bigger than all other hut´s then make a nice looking curtain in front of the entry .
Then place a guarg figur near the entry and some wepons and shilds because
visetors must leave there wepons outside the hut.
Also a nice looking Dog will be good .
I the court can be some of the chief´s wifes also some animales and children .
One of the wifes can be a white wommen .

of course, Grimm, I wont forget the white woman  Jane Porter or Lara Croft

...and if your village is for cannibals or other headhunters in Darkest Africa remember to add a trophy rack outside the chief's hut. This could be as simple as a few stakes topped with skulls or freshly killed heads (one of which should be a white man still wearing his sun helmet).

Nice idea too, also for non-cannibals/headhunters!
And folks, how could look a pigmies village? Shoud be huts be smaller...?
Btw, welcome aboard, Bullshott! :)

Darn, thanks for that link Plynkes.
I love the 'savannah' tribal african huts. Especially these:

And

I've been playing with the idea of making a diorama based on the latest Darkest Africa hype, and these models just fit the spot :P
Now only to scrounge up some cash to buy me some unpainted. Stuff is tough when you're an unemployed history student with a passion for miniatures

the second one is great, like it too. But the entrance looks too smalle to me or is it historical?

I think the huts do have small doorways in real life. You might even try Monolith Designs or Hovels as they both do some nice african huts. :)
