Title: Tsuba Miniatures: 'Red' German Sailors (Painted on P.3)
Post by: Maichus on December 20, 2013, 10:32:51 AM
Finally somebody for the Freikorps to fight against.  ;)

These are basically done, I've just asked Paul to add the rhomboid looking collar insignias and the ends of the cap bands for the 'sailor-look' like this man serving with the Torpedodivision L5 (photo found on the internet):

For now there will be five sets:
- Command set
- Sailors with rifles advancing
- Sailors with rifles firing/loading
- HMG (this set will, of course, also include a MG08 HMG although it's not show on the photo)
- Sailors with assault weapons

Hopefully, we'll have the castings available in February 2014!

Agreed, or even a nice Nef crew for some late VSF or pulp game.

Very nice. My small late-WW1 German force is already being built with an eye toward doubling as Freikorp, so a batch of these guys as opposition sound good.

I love all of Paul's sculpts but agree about the faces.  You can always tell a Hick's sculpt because apart from the odd patch of face fungus they are all the same.
It would be nice he if had the time to diversify a little and have a few different face sculpts to draw from.

Agree with the Captain and Prof. on the faces.
Still, very cool figures.

Actually, I think there's reasonable diversity in the faces of these figures although they are unmistakeable in terms of identifying the sculptor.

I've often wondered if Mr Hicks, or at least his model or muse, doesn't suffer from a mild scoliosis, as many of his figures seem to a perceptible hunch or forward lean. I'd love to see what he could do with a Richard III figure.

Frederick Remington's cavalrymen all had pretty much the same face, and he's still considered the greatest artist of Western subjects.

I like the hicks' sculpts.  :D

I think the range opens up the possibility for some "civilians" - agitators like Red Rosa or Adolph Hitler, innocent / not so innocent bystanders, hostages, etc.

Hi David,

The plan is to release them in two weeks. The moulding and casting is already done, Iain of Flags of War has designed two flag sheets for them (or for the use with any other unit fighting against the Freikorps) and Andrew Taylor has painted a set of master castings.

The reason why they aren't up for sale, yet, is that I had some private trouble lately (nothing dramatic but time consuming none the less) and I'm in the final stage of my master degree at university. The final, final, final exam is next week and I wanted to get that one out of the way first, so I can concentrate on any orders and enquiries.

Thanks for your patience!  :)

Maichus,

Thanks for the reply and the great service on my past purchases. Excellent news on the release update as well as my congratulations on your personal progress towards your degree!  8)

I most certainly understand real life getting in the way of our hobbies. I will have to delay my first round of Red Sailor purchases by a few months. I will soon to be returning Stateside from Korea, as well as a follow-on move for the family across the Country. I am rapidly approaching the time when ordering anything could put a package's safe arrival in jeopardy. I will surely be emailing you around July, though!  ;)

David  :)

Thanks again for all the kind words and support! All exams are done and passed now.  ;)

The Sailors are now available. (Empress Miniatures will also receive the first stock soon.)

Here are the painted example by Andrew Taylor with flags by Flags of War:

The two flag sheets Iain did:

As you can see, each sheet gets you one plain red flag and another one with a written slogan. The first one (INT02) reads:

Quote
Rote Garde
hoch
d[ie] soz[ialistische] kom[m]unistische
Räte Republik

which translates pretty much to:
Quote
Red Guard
long live
the socialistic communistic
Republic of Councils (or Soviet Republic)

The second one (INT03) reads:

Quote
Alle Macht
den
A[rbeiter-] u[nd] S[oldaten-]Räten

which translates to:
Quote
All Might (or All Power)
to the
Workers' and Soldiers' Councils

These slogans are based on contemporary photos. I will post the respective photos over the next couple of days.

And one of the alternative flags in use:

This is some seriously good work from all those involved. Although I may have no (immediate) need for them I'll forward the news to some guys who might be interested. Had great service from you, Markus, on my first order which won't be the last!
However, are these flags the misprinted one you mentioned on the blog? 'cause I'm pretty sure that's no "k" but a "tz", and it looks like the font used here couldn't produce an "ä". I'm sure you've addressed that already, so just curious.

PS: Congrats for passing the exams. Always a relief. :)

The combination of a Mr Hicks figure and a Mr Taylor paint job is a lovely combination.
