As a wee break from doing my SHIVA board, I've got a bit of castle wall to build for Mutineer Miniatures.
They already have a few wall sections based on the Red Fort in Delhi and I've got to make a gate house using that as inspiration.

I couldn't think how to go about it. The only way I can think of doing it is in Blue Foam. I've given it a lot more texture than the real thing so that it'll paint up easier than a direct copy. I'm going to make it in two bits, this bit and a top walkway that'll sit on top of this...

Holy Cow!
That is simply fantastic.
Thanks for the peep.
-
VERY interested in this for Indostan. Wonderful looking build! :-* :-* :-*
-
Definitely going to be watching this with interest, your projects are always a treat and something like this could really dress up my tableful of "generic tropical buildings" for pulp and Interwar NWF goodness!
-
Must ask...do you draw up templates in card before cutting e foam?
Looks fabulous!
-
Very good. I look forward to seeing it painted.

No pressure then! ;) I hope I can do it justice!!
Must ask...do you draw up templates in card before cutting e foam?
Looks fabulous!
No Eric. I just use my trusty pencil and ruler and slightly mark the foam. The hardest part is cutting 'straight' down, but I use a big 'snap off' style Stanley blade and that helps.
Cheers gents!

Lovely stuff as ever Mr M!

A culmination of this mornings work....

Another great build in the offing.

Watching with interest, as Wirelizard put it:

....and plenty more besides.
;)

You make everything look so easy! But that is an enormous amount of talent and hard work! I'm totally impressed.

Wow, turn your head away for an hour or two and Andy has constructed another treasure! Looking great!

Next time we blink he'll show us a table he's whipped up with a full 28mm Pyramids of Giza, with playable interiors.
Then the camera pans back and you'll see an entire replica of the city of Cairo.
-
Very nice build, would be a treat to game on.

WOW stunning!

You really could have your own terrain business! It's always a treat to see your stuff.

You really are a wizz with the old blue stuff matey :-* :-*

I'm gonna have to give this technique a go again some time soon. It looks so great. Hereto my problem with it is that in wears poorly.

:-* :-* :-*
It is such a spectacular fortress, and you have captured it beautifully! Are there other pics of the red fortress you have already made? (Linky please!!!)
The door works for me ;)
Cheers
Matt.
-
Holy moly, that is gatetastic!
-
Drat, missed this one, suppose its completed by now, and if it is , is there a Finished shot yet?

Sorry for being sooooo late in getting back to you Constable!! Here's a link to their other bits! BTW I didn't do them! It was some other talented soul!

Anyway back to my bit of wall! :D
I decided after looking at for a while that I didn't like the detail in the blue foam. I doesn't do the real thing ANY justice. Having found some other pics I've changed it. I made a couple of presses out of GS and used it for repeat patterns over some other GS.
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/89EFCF7E-952D-4A23-97DA-0B5FB56C1E72_zpsrtpymndo.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/89EFCF7E-952D-4A23-97DA-0B5FB56C1E72_zpsrtpymndo.jpg.html)
The horizontal pattern will eventually be stuck where the rectangles are on the foam....

Toptastic ;D

Thanks for the tip AndyM, no point reinventing the wheel when a good one already exists! The project looks great, even if you were concerned with the old door, that new one is spectacular!! :-* :-*
Cheers

Looking good and thank you for the updates.

Nice trees around this door!
Now it just needs a Tourist Office sign with "Say 'friend' and enter" written on it. :D

It does look a bit Lord of the Ring-sy now you mention it! :?
I've washed all the shiny washing up liquid off of the GS and mocked up how it'll all sit...

Cheers gents!
It's gotten a bit further, although it doesn't look like I've done too much! :'( The walls are now drilled and stuck in place. The thing that's taken soo long is the arch inside the gate. I decided I'd try and do something a bit extra(at least for me!). I've also made doors from the gate onto the battlements....

Blinking marvellous Andy :-*
-
It has to be said that this is mightliy impressive :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
There is a hell of a lot of skill that has gone into building this model.
BTW, if you don't mind me asking:
What makes you decide to use Milliput or Greystuff and under what sort of circumstances? (Or a mix of both of course)?
Cheers,
Darrell.
-
I only use either blue foam or greenstuff. I only use the GS if I want to try and get a good bit of detail in. The blue foam doesn't take that well to the intricate stuff! The only other time I used GS in this build was on the parapet wall. I had some of the old crenellations to stick on and I thought using plastic card and GS would be stronger. I don't know if that helps mate? :?
Excellent mate although you're starting to compete with Steve on greenstuff usage lol

Surely I'm not getting THAT bad.......I'm I? ;) ;)
Thanks a lot guys!

absolutely stunning!!!

Yeah. Next on the build list is an octagonal tower. Hopefully something like these on either side of this gate.....

Once again an amazingly detailed build. :-*
I spy in the background some possibly matching wall sections. And a collapsed bridge.

I'm afraid the bridge is a long ago forgotten project that was supposed to be for 40k Apocalypse. I was trying to use the Brooklyn bridge as inspiration. Over the years it's taken a bit of damage. I don't see me ever using it( I don't play 40k anymore), but I can't bring myself to throw it in the bin!

I am sure that you could make a small board with that as the basis of it for the Crooked Dice boys.....Planet of the Apes, Post-Apoc, Escape from New York all spring to mind....
;)
-
I second Mason's motion! Definitely worthy construction to be used in some PA kind of way.
Love the gate and all the detail, will keenly follow the work on the octagonal tower as well.
-
Thanks for the close-ups of the bridge; a fantastic build that. I echo also that it would make a nice center piece of a PA board. If you can't throw it out might as well re-purpose it.
Looking forward to your next project.
-
To be honest, if you're not attached to it, you could probably sell it even in its incomplete state.
-
In all honesty, it wouldn't take too much to bring it up to this standard. I've shown this before, it's a finished part of the same table I was trying to build with my brother.....

Well, get on with it then ;D

James
-
Bloody brilliant!
8)
Now just get rid of that dreadnaught and you are halfway there already.
;)
Well, get on with it then ;D
Ignore him, he obviously has not had his tablets yet..... ::)
-
So I had a bit of a major problem with the gate. When we tried to cast it in a vacuum chamber the silicon seeped into the hollow area! The model was pretty destroyed! :'( :'( :'( So I've done it all again and I took a wee bit more time, this time. The pattern at the top now goes all the way around and so do the crenellations around the parapet.

I've also done a couple of ruined wall bits to add to this too....
