Title: McMordain's Workbench
Post by: McMordain on January 06, 2014, 02:08:32 AM
Ahoy!

This will be the first time I post my work here. I decided to start the year with some converting for two Pulp Alley leagues. Due to the player composition of my club instead of a traditional pulp setting, we will play sci-fi/fanatsy stuff (if I can bug them enough to actually play...).
I plan to run a longer campaign, with me as the GM. So I put together two NPC Leagues.

The first band is retinue of The Baron of Gromund:

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Wip/TheBaroncrew1wip_zps712ef289.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Wip/TheBaroncrew1wip_zps712ef289.jpg.html)
The big ape is Zorg (sidekick), the Baron's bodyguard, in the middle the Baron (leader)himself and right of him is his spy master, Finigen (sidekick). Not much converting on these, the Baron got a pistol which needs some holder sculpted.

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Wip/TheBaroncrew2wip_zps727567ca.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Wip/TheBaroncrew2wip_zps727567ca.jpg.html)
In the middle is Captain Trakan (ally), officer of the Palace Guards. He is converted from an old Warzone Bauhaus officer. The two Palace Guard (followers) either side of him are also Bauhaus troopers. The two metal guy on the edges are Combat Droids (followers). I gave them a shield and an axe. Luckily I had two identical axe in my bitz box, that fitt them perfectly. (Also my camera fu got rusty, so I will make better pictures tomorrow.)

The other league is an inter dimensional space-time pirate crew, lead by Captain Luna Sariss.

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Wip/Fortunehunterscrewwip_zpsdd1213a7.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Wip/Fortunehunterscrewwip_zpsdd1213a7.jpg.html)
The captain (in the middle) is used without any modification, I just cut away her base. Right of her is the first mate, Mr. Gunn (sidekick). He is an Alkemy figure with an added revolver. He cannot shoot in the game, but I like multi purpose figures, and he looks cool with it. The lady with the big gun is named One-eye (ally) for the moment, she is the sniper in the crew. She probably will get a new name. I changed first half of the rifle and added a sword to her back.
In the back is two able seamen (followers), Mr. Dirk and Mr. Jones. The lad with the chest got a breather mask to make him more modern looking. The peg legged fellow will get a new gun, but i can't decide which one to choose. He will get a pair of grenades as well.

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Wip/AbelSeaman1_zps4d934658.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Wip/AbelSeaman1_zps4d934658.jpg.html)

The ray-gun has that retro feel which I like a lot, but I think he would look badass with the smg as well. Can you guys help me decide this?

Nice collection - looking forward to the painting.

And definitely the SMG (makes him a multi-purpose figure).

I vote the space gun, because it fits more with this wonderfully silly universe, but I agree the SMG would give the figure greater utility in other games. I'm not sure how many different campaigns/setting you're going to run with crazy modernized pirates, but if you manage more than one, that's got to be worth some bonus wargamer points.

Can't wait to see paint, terrain, games, etc. for this.

What figure is one-eye?

Wonderfully ecclectic bunch of pirates! great work gathering the right figures together; I'm sure you had a blast doing that...  :)

As for the gun; I'm not convinced by either one actually. The raygun looks too much like the flintlock gun he's already holding and the SMG is clearly identifiable as an MP5K. Not much to do about that, and it is a cool looking gun, but being what it is, it's too 'nowadays' to work as scifi.

Of course you can always say it's an antique, but I'd advise to find a more distinctly scifi gun. There are so many out there, I'm sure there's one that will work.

Keep it up; this project is most inspirational!  8)

FramFramson, One-eye is a Stitchmen Hunter (http://wreck-age.net/index.php/online-store#!/~/product/category=6202037&id=11141088) from Hyacinth Games Wreck-age game.

The barrel of her gun was to flimsy for my taste so I replaced it with a British rifle from West Wind's SotR line. And added a sword.
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Wip/One-eyewip_zps60a97f50.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Wip/One-eyewip_zps60a97f50.jpg.html)

As for the pirate's gun in question I have the same concerns as you, Daeothar, that's why I asked for opinions. The thing is I want to finish them in January and I paint very slowly. I don't want to wait for a new gun to arrive (it would take at least a week), so I have to work with what it is in my bitz box. And those two guns are the best. But I maybe build one from scratch.

And here is a better picture of the Combat Robots.

Thanks for the comments.

So after a lot of thinking and searching through my bitzbox a couple of times I made this gun.

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Wip/AbelSeaman2_zps6cf17fe5.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Wip/AbelSeaman2_zps6cf17fe5.jpg.html)

Unfortunately I don't like it... What do you think?
Title: Re: McMordain's Workbench
Post by: FramFramson on January 07, 2014, 02:45:02 AM
It needs a proper muzzle instead of a ball. I think that'll help quite a bit.

I like the new gun; it's a sort of portable Tesla coil, from the look of it. Death-lightning will crackle forth from the front globe, I'm sure...  8)

Who makes the combat droids?
Title: Re: McMordain's Workbench

d phipps: Thanks. As I'm a collector most of all, I have a lot of stuff to choose from lol

Jep Daeothar has it right, a lightning type weapon was in my mind, when I did that one. When I will use it, I probably will make a backpack for it as well. I can get inpatient easily if I'm excited about something so I went ahead nad used the smg. Took out the GS as well. I will post pictures tomorrow.

The Combat Droids are old Warzone figures, Mishima Suicide Warheads. You can found them HERE (http://shop.princeaugust.ie/warzone-mutant-chronicles-wargame/mishima-mega-corporation/tg9523pb-warzone-mishima-suicide-warheads-4-figures/), commissarmoody.

You've really made those warzone chaps look good, quite tempted to pick some up now.
Also tempted to get that reaper gorilla and give it a rats head.....

Yeah, my like for the Warzone and Chronopia figures was an acquired taste  :)

So, pictures. First the Combat Droids. Added straps for the shields and thumbs to the hands.
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Wip/CDWip2_zpsf4d1a3f7.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Wip/CDWip2_zpsf4d1a3f7.jpg.html)

Then here is Capt. Trakan. I hate sculpting hands. Never come out good. (and I still can't make good photos of small details...)
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Wip/Captwip_zps42db8584.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Wip/Captwip_zps42db8584.jpg.html)

The members of the other league, still-named-Half-eye, Mr. Gunn and Mr. Jones. Jones still needs some kind of a strap around his head for the mask. I'm not sure how to do it yet.
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Wip/crewwip2_zpsf063dfc9.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Wip/crewwip2_zpsf063dfc9.jpg.html)

And here is Mr. Dirk with his smg and the back of Half-eye.
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Wip/Crewwip_zps869777b8.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Wip/Crewwip_zps869777b8.jpg.html)
Did I mentioned yet, I absolutely hate sculpting hands? I had to redo it twice, and I'm still not satisfied with the results. But it is as good as it's get.

Hopefully tomorrow I can finish the bases, then they will be ready for undercoating and painting.

Good stuff. Mr. Jones' mask will look too much if done like Bane (Batman). Best just a strap above the ears I think.

No Bane mask for Mr. Jones  ;) I used some thin thread from my mothers stash. It was easier done than I thought will be.
I also primed the figures, along with a couple of others. Now on to painting. Right after I decided an actual colour scheme. The pirates the easier part, only One-Eye will be trickier. And I need to find a good emblem for the group. Something I can paint on the back of their jackets. Any ideas (I don't want to do a simple skulls&bones)?
The Baron's cohort is a little more difficult. The guards will be painted on the grey-black-bronze line, while Finnigen and the robots will have more colour. The big ape is straightforward enough. I will probably leave the Baron for last, to see how to tie the two group together with his colours.

When they get some paint I will try to make some acceptable pictures.

How about a stylised one eyed bear's head with a crossed claw and sword underneath then? ;D

Eh, you got me there for a minute lol
I would rather not use the Bear Pirates crest though. At least not for these pirates.
Well I have time to think on it.

Ahoy!

Soo I should have put out a slow painter sign...
Anyway here is where I'm now. I have been concentrating on the Fortune Hunter's crew.

Half-eye got some paints as well, but the photos turned out bad, so no sense posting those.

Ahoy!

Our club had an all night long painting session on Friday (from 20 pm to 5 am), which helped me finish the pirates at last. So here they are. Bases will be done today (well that's the plan).

Captain Luna Sariss
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/PiP/LunaPip2_zps64cbefe7.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/PiP/LunaPip2_zps64cbefe7.jpg.html)

First mate Mr. Gunn

Bosun One-Eye

Able seaman Mr. Dirk
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/PiP/DirkPip2_zps02643357.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/PiP/DirkPip2_zps02643357.jpg.html)

Able seaman Mr. Jones
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/PiP/JonesPip2_zpscb1dae5a.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/PiP/JonesPip2_zpscb1dae5a.jpg.html)

Also The Baron and his team got some paint as well, but nothing worth showing yet.

Are the white Reaper minis from the Bones line (I have some of them from the Chronopia line)?

Argonor: Yes, they are Bones minis. I'm not really satisfied with the material, but they were cheap (I was in the kickstarter). And with paint on them they are ok.

I will paint some on the weekend (probably) and make pics about the finished pirate crew. Also I will write down the background for them.  ;)

Due to the fact that I always forget to bring home my basing materials from our club the pirates bases are still not done yet... I hope I will not forget it tomorrow.

In the meantime here are some pip pictures of the Baron's crew and some extra.

The Baron himself. I'm still undecided about painting his armour black (like his guards, see below) or regular metal. And his hair, gray to make him look older, or some normal colour, black or brown?
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/PiP/Baronpip1_zpsebd667b8.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/PiP/Baronpip1_zpsebd667b8.jpg.html)

And the base he will stand on
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/PiP/Baronbasepip1_zpsd2e5bc6d.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/PiP/Baronbasepip1_zpsd2e5bc6d.jpg.html)

Capt. Trakan and the two Personal Guard. They look much better painted, I really start to like them. While painting Trakan I was thinking about his skin colour. I may paint him blue as Capt. Sariss, so they can be be from the same place. Maybe even served under the pirate Lady, then choose a new employer.
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/PiP/BaronGuardpip1_zpse9152048.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/PiP/BaronGuardpip1_zpse9152048.jpg.html)

The Combat Droids. They sort of look like they come from a bath. I like the contrast of the brighter sash and edges. They looked good in white as well, so someday I maybe paint the other two I have that way.
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/PiP/Baronrobotspip1_zps69379da3.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/PiP/Baronrobotspip1_zps69379da3.jpg.html)

And the extra. Two lady for some pulp/weird ww games (if I ever find someone interested in it), and the Crimson Raiders, sky pirates.
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/PiP/PulpCharacterspip_zpsbc61a3d1.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/PiP/PulpCharacterspip_zpsbc61a3d1.jpg.html)

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/PiP/CrimsonRaiderspip1_zpsfb2c1371.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/PiP/CrimsonRaiderspip1_zpsfb2c1371.jpg.html)
Not very good pictures, the red looks really flat. They look much better IRL. But fear not, I put a plan in motion to have better equipment for photographing my pictures. My loyal minions are on the project  :D

Lastly some conversions for my Warmachine pirate army.
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Wip/PPpiratesconv_zpsc56f43a3.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Wip/PPpiratesconv_zpsc56f43a3.jpg.html)

For the setting and story of the Pulp Alley game I planning I will open a new topic in the ... err... Future Wars section, that will be the best fit probably. As soon as I finish the pirate crew and make a group photo. Don't hold your breath though, I'm slow ;)

Sooo I'm back. I hope no one held his/her breath, but I told you I'm slow :D

Various things got me distracted and it was hard to get motivated but I painted things in these two years. Mostly commissions though. Sad truth but money and nagging customers seems to be the best motivators now days...  :(

Anyway here are some pics

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Malifaux/IMG_9158_zpsbn5z1zjd.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Malifaux/IMG_9158_zpsbn5z1zjd.jpg.html)

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Malifaux/IMG_9488_zpsopkzzkap.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Malifaux/IMG_9488_zpsopkzzkap.jpg.html)

Lots of Malifaux. Most of the Wyrd stuff is a nightmare to put together, and a pain to paint but they look good once it's done. I had the "pleasure" to paint the old and the new Dreamer team. I liked the old metal on better but I'm partial toward metal any day ;)

I got another commission today to paint some Warmachine stuff. A friend of mine wants to enter the Hungarian Masters tourney and needs a fully painted army for that. So I will be painting some converted nyss hunters, solos and what-not. Pics will follow.

I'm also working on some terrain for my Orc vs Cowboys game. This will be the forth game and the orks will be besieging an abbey/monastery defended by the monks, farmers taking refuge there, some outlaws and three mysterious strangers. More on this tomorrow.

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Terrain/Western/apaacutetsaacuteg%20wip_zpsxj0rtqfa.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Terrain/Western/apaacutetsaacuteg%20wip_zpsxj0rtqfa.jpg.html)

I also need to paint up a lot of minis for this as well. The monks, some farmer types and finish my Lotr orks/goblins/uruks for the other side.
Well we will see how long I will last this time :)

Thanks. I like to paint very different things at once because I get bored easily. Maybe I painted too much 40K IG in my younger days  :D
The lady is Hannah (http://giveusyourmoneypleasethankyou-wyrd.com/collections/outcasts/products/hannah) from Wyrds Malifaux game. A really great mini once it's done but after putting together two I had enough of her for a lifetime (that's reminds me, I have to paint the second one as well... o_o).

Title: Re: McMordain's Workbench

So these are the WM minis I have to paint for my friend ( at the moment). A unit of nyss hunters and a solo, Sylys Wyshnalyrr. Also I decided to paint my Sylys as well, that's why there is two of them.

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/Warmachine/WM%20nyss%20hunters_zpsxsbyovhl.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/Warmachine/WM%20nyss%20hunters_zpsxsbyovhl.jpg.html)

The unit is converted, which was done by somebody else. GW wood/dark elf heads and arms on the nyss bodies. They are not bad, theoretically ready to paint, but I cannot respect a modeller/painter who doesn't bother to remove mould lines... I have to remove those, and repair some minor damage.

So roughly three years ago it occurred to me that the Legend of the Old West rules should be compatible with the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game. Basically the former is based on the latter. I grabbed my outlaw posse from a former LotOW campaign worth roughly 500$, put together a 500 point Isengard army and asked one of my friend, who similarly likes silly things, to test my theory in practice. And it worked. The game was fun and he wanted to play it again.
Here is a not too good pic of the setup of the first game.
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniature%20battles/orkvscowboys1_zpse1jeygeh.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniature%20battles/orkvscowboys1_zpse1jeygeh.jpg.html)

Unfortunately my friend went abroad shortly after that so the continuation was put on hold. We played again a year later when he came home for a week. He moved back here a year ago and never stopped nagging me about the game. Various things kept me from playing but a month ago we played again. I made some ad hoc narrative for the three games and made up the next game keeping future developments in sight.
Also so far we used whatever figures I had, painted or not, but for the next game I want a nice board and fully painted minis.
I will use these guys as the monks of the abbey

Granted they are smaller than the Black Scorpion and GW Lotr figures but I don't care  :D
More will follow.

The walls are done, only need to paint the "legs". I also repaired the small building, and started the bigger one.

I made a water well as well.

But I need to start painting the figs and I don't have enough space to do both at the same time. So the abbey was put aside for now and I cleaned my table for painting.
We have guest this week, so I don't know how much free time I will have till they leave on Monday. At least I want to clean them up.

Some excellent progress.

You don't get your guests to assist with wargaming projects?

Thanks.
Not these kind of guests :). My parents are members of Friendship Force, and our current guests came form Japan. They spend most of the day going around tourist sites and come back late afternoon. So I have circa two hours to do stuff at home after work, then I go into translator mode, as I'm the most proficient English speaker in the family. But it's always interesting to have guests from abroad so I don't mind.
As a gift for them I plan to paint these two Prince August hussars as members of the 10th Hussars (King Frederick William II of Prussia's), an Imperial and Royal Hussars regiment.

Here is the finished small building

The gate section is painted but it's base still needs to be done.

Good idea with that cake-box for keeping dust and paint splatter off the minis! I may nick that for when I get enough clutter cleared away from my work areas  :)

Argonor - even smaller containers are great for this task. I use take away-sized containers to ensure my half painted minis are protected. Slow painter and all that.

Ahoy!

So what did I do in the last couple of weeks.

Well I finished the hussars for the guests. No pics because I finished them in the last minute and forgot to take some, before they packed it away...

I also painted a bunch of Prince August fantasy figures for a school festival/sale. My old elementary school has this thing every year around sept 29, and they always invite me. So I take my casting stuff and some painted figs and spend two hours casting little soldiers with children. I'm always the last one to leave.  lol I'm popular with the kids.

This year I prepared this lot, and though I couldn't finish all, I still took 40 figures and sold around 30 of them.

One of my colleagues son goes to this school and she asked me if I could paint some Lord of the Rings figures for his birthday. She wanted a Legolas, a Gimli and an orc. And her daughter wanted two horses. I said sure why not, it's not like I have to paint up a dozen WM figures for the same weekend...  o_o I'm not good at saying no to requests.

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/PAfantasy_zpsx6nm6rrz.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/PAfantasy_zpsx6nm6rrz.jpg.html)

Legolas needed a headswap because the elven archer mould I have has a cap, and the mother wanted blond hair. Also his mouth is not so creepy in person. :D

(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z186/McMordain/Miniatures/PAlovak_zpssmzsxbqo.jpg) (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/McMordain/media/Miniatures/PAlovak_zpssmzsxbqo.jpg.html)

The daughter wanted a brown horse with blond mane and a white horse. The white one I was not entirely satisfied with, but I was told she liked them so that's ok.

I also worked hard on the Nyss hunters, Sylys and a dwarf mortar team for my friend, but I couldn't finish them in time. They were ok for the tournament, just not done. He won so at least that's something. I will get them back this weekend to finish the job.

After that back to the Ork vs Cowboys project.

Well done - always nice to spread happiness to others.

Also his mouth is not so creepy in person. :D

Can't work out if it's badly applied lipstick or screaming everytime an orc get an arrow in the eye. :D
