Title: Lead Adventure Index of Historical and Hollywood Old West Heroes (and Villains)
Post by: Elbows on January 09, 2014, 02:35:58 AM
Or...LAIHHOWH(V) for short?  lol

Anyway, as I'm getting closer and close to finishing my rules for SnS, I've started to already collect information and ideas for expansions (characters etc.).  I figured this would be a good place for people to help me (and others) in creating or using both historical and hollywood based heroes and villains.  I admit I haven't read enough books on the Old West, nor watched nearly enough of the Old West movies available.

So, if you guys would be so kind as to share your knowledge!

Post up some pictures, quick backgrounds, preferred weapons and possible traits for some of your favourite heroes and villains.  These can be from film or from history.  Please include some trait notes that we gamers could use to include some of these guys in our games/scenarios etc.

Loner?  Smokes a lot?  Drinks a lot?  Quiet?  Never runs?  Plays a harmonica?  etc.  Who are your favourites?

Have you got a copy of, or access to, Legends of the Old West?

There is a whole section on historical characters, each with a brief history, and the authors assessment of suitable skills.

Worth a look, at least.
 ;)

Maybe someone you know has them.....

Alternatively here is a link to some OW characters for the GURPS system.
Check it out as it should provide some inspiration:

Most any role played by John Wayne (1926 - 1972)  from before Quirt Evans to John Bernard Books - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wayne_filmography - but primarily (for me) Stoney Brroke, Quirt Evans, (duh, introduced my girls to Westerns,) Captain Kirby York, Captain Nathan Brittles, Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke, Tom Doniphan, Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn, Wil Andersen, to John Bernard Books.

Lots of roles, many are from western tropes/icons even when the movie was not a  Western.

Gracias,

Glenn

Yes, a fan of the actor and the man (not without his personal "warts" noted)

Here are some of my all time favorites

Will find pictures later if I have time

Josh Randall - Steve McQueen in Wanted Dead or Alive used a sawed-off Winchester he called his "mare's leg" quiet, cool gentelman.

Shot gun Slade - Scott Brady used a special built over and under rifle. It had a 12 guage shotgun on top and a 35 Cal. on the bottom. He was a Peter Gunn type western detective - Cool and calculating

Sheriff Clay Hollister - Pat Conway. The Sheriff of Tombstone in Tombstone Territory. Wore two pistols and often preferred a shotgun if facing several cowboys. He had nerves of steel and never backed down

Maverick - James Garner used a pistol if he had to and was a notorious Card Shark

Bat Masterson - Fancy dresser with derby hat and walking cane often used to disarm an opponent. Carried a pistol and I think a darrenger.

Will, Jeff and James Sonnett - from the Guns of Will Sonnett.  regulars:
Walter Brennan as Will Sonnett - Former US Cavalry fast draw head of the family
Dack Rambo as Jeff Sonnett - Young, mildly impulsive loyal grandson fast draw
Jason Evers as James Sonnett - the father of Jeff on the run as a gun slinger so very fast draw but only when pushed

Well there are dozen more. I collect these shows on DVD and had a hard time picking my favs but there you go.

Elbows sorry it has taken me a few days to reply. I'm having computer problems  >:( Yes all the shows mentioned in my post were TV series when I was a kid. Wanted Dead or Alive with Steve McQueen was a personal favorite. I wanted a gun like his in the worst way. I was and still am a huge western fan. You can get the entire series on DVD off amazon. I highly recommend it. By the way Michel Landon plays the bad guy in the first episode  :D Little Joe was a much nicer fella. There is another group of characters Little Joe, Hoss, and Adam not to mention Pa  ;)
