It's been a while since I sculpted something for my own Mutton Chop range. With the birth of our daughter Lily we needed a range that would help with the bills and could hopefully mean that Lily would be cared by myself and Kerry. So I chose a range I wanted to do for a long time in my own style and pack selection. It's a period I first ever converted a Tamiya figure to way back in 1988 after buying my first ever Osprey book.

Well this is the start of those new figures from over Christmas. Any guesses of what they could be?:).
The dollies also have great uses for the current Mutton Chop range as well other Inter-War British . These will go to the mould makers real soon and I look forward to getting stuck in.
-
Err, British, erm, Great War... ;) Dismounted cav?
Lovely sculpting as usual Mr. Hicks.
-
Exciting! :D
-
very nice indeed !!!!
-
Those look jolly nice, heres to hoping you will do some Germans too (preferably in light kit)
-
Will be interesting to follow. I've realised that a lot of models I like, regardless of manufacturer, have been sculpted by you. :)
-

Agreed. In light and storm trooper kit with lots of grenades. :D
-
My idea is to first start with the BEF and Early War Germans. Once they are done I want to progress to later forms of kit. Really looking forward to this project.

And that Is a good nod to the centennial of the "Great War". :)

Early war Germans, splendid :)

Great news and nice sculpts!

Paul
Sounds good. I liked the stuff you initially did for Bill, just needed alot more variety in troops/poses. And some Germans... ;)
-
Nicely done!!
-
These look like they'll be very nice indeed. As an aside , the Viet Minh you are doing for Red Box look amazing, I was thinking about getting some for the later conflict and using them as VC with obsolete weapons. Ever thought about doing a Vietnam range, I'll bet they would be immensely popular!
-
How about some opposition?? Germans?
-
Paul, your work is hugely popular for the simple reason....it is fantastic! :-*
David
-
Fantastic news Paul! I've been waiting for so long for you to revisit this era... its safe to say I'm definitely in! :-* how many packs are you planning for the initial release?
-
Really interesting news, Paul.
I´m a fanatic of your figures, and these one can be very useful as Royal Marines against your "red" German sailors, by example.
But if you put them pith helmets, they could be used in the Third Afghan War (please!).
Very nice!

Im sure I heard empress are going down that road? Someone correst me if im wrong ???
-
Empress Afghan Brits out at Vapnartak - probably by the noble Mr. Hicks?
-
Well for the NW Frontier presumably Empress will go for the more typical combination of shorts, shirts and Wolesleys and/ or Bombay Bowlers. Chaps in temperate 1914 uniforms with puttees doesn't really scream the Frontier to me.
Just accept these as they are, superb sculpts of 1914 era British infantry.
-
You will have to bear with me as I will be doing this range when I can fit it in with other work. I plan to do the BEF first and then work my way through the war. Keep your eyes peeled and I will post pictures as soon as they are back on the workbench.
-
No rush, it will allow me time to finish some of my other projects first.
-
Mr Hicks, you need a clon of yourself, IMHO. Fortunately, I have a lot of projects that use your figures, so I can wait without pain :). Sailors could be a good adition to the range...
-
I would love to do Royal Navy for the defence of Antwerp. The dollies might well work as well for AZW RN as well.
Paul

Paul
And many other small actions all around the world!
-
You know, I always do a little happy dance when Mr. Hicks announces a new range :D
-
Me too! :D
Although I'd love for Paul to revisit the Congo 1960s 5-Commando stuff he did some time ago. I've got them all but want more! If I won the lottery… ;)
-
Great news.
-
First completed figure. One of the Imperial German figures.

First pack is nearly completed!
Paul
-
Excellent! Brings back memories of my first toy soldiers, Airfix Germans that I lovingly shoplifted from Woolworths 8)
-
Excellent news.
The shape of the pickelhaube looks spot on.
-
Most excellent! :D
-
Beautiful!
-
Now that, is how a WWI sculpt should should look! :-*
The uniform, the kit, the helmet, THE RIFLE. All of it is executed amazingly!
David

Now we are talking. Who needs CAD when you can do this and make it look ten times better.

Finished first pack hope to have them out for some time before August. I'm doing these at night at the moment so they may take a little while until they are released.

Splendid stuff, these will supplement my Great War Miniatures force nicely, need all the troops one can get against that mad minute.
-
Lovely sculpting as usual Mr. H! Hope to see some NCO's with proper 'taches.
-
But, but... where are the moustaches? :'(
Can you already spill the beans what sets you are going to sculpt?
-

Maybe like Soapy's separate heads thing for Woodbine, Paul is going to sell "separate moustache" packs. :)

Now, that's an idea! ;D
Paul, you might want to look into the cuffs of the MG crew again. As far as I know, the MG units used the same tunics as the Jäger at the beginning of the war. Which means the Swedish cuff pattern instead of the Brandenburger one of the line infantry.
If I'm wrong, please let me know!
-
I will check that out. I know the Artillery units had differing cuffs.

I think you are getting confused with the independent machine battalions
-
I think you are getting confused with the independent machine battalions
I'm not sure, the books I have aren't 100% clear on that issue (just reading them again). The original independent Maschinengewehrabteilungen (MG detachements) definitely had the Jäger tunics. The MG companies that got added to the line infantry and Jäger regiments used their 'old' uniforms until the change of uniforms in 1915/16. I interpret it like they also had the Jäger tunics as the original Maschinengewehrabteilungen did BUT one could also see it the other way around (i.e. they had the same uniforms as their parent regiments).
There were also some line infantry regiments that used the Swedish cuffs. I'm sure there won't be a problem to find photos of both versions (not to mention other versions like the German cuffs of the Saxon units, etc.).
-

Have to agree that men added to companies would keep their uniform, but battalions MG companies already on the battalion strength would surely have the same cuffs as the rest of the battalion? All very confusing but I think Paul is Ok to continue as they are.
-
I have checked through the books I have, none note that battalion MG companies had different cuffs to the rest of the battalion, not saying they didn't of course, but I would have thought it worthy of note if it was the norm.
Perhaps someone else will chip in with more info.
The one photo with an identifying battalion that I have is not clear enough to ascertain the cuff pattern :?

When the fit well with my early great war germans, i definitly will buy tons of them!! ;D ;D
-
Of course, I´m going to buy them, all of them. I like a lot the look of the helmet, really "natural".
-
They give me an excuse to di early war In the east so i am game.
-
The first of the BEF completed. In full marching order to represent the early war of movement.

-
Super stuff, very nicely posed firing stances.
-
Indeed, those are really quite magnificent and very, very tempting.
-
More beautiful figures for the shopping list! :-*
I must admit that I am amazed by the speed in which Paul can sculpt such great looking figures. This time obviously includes research as well as actual sculpt time...Just amazing!
David
-
My paint pots are lining up ready for these chaps, Paul. Fantastic.
-
Splendid and this is done "after" the working hours! ;D
-
Outstanding better then I could imagined! How many have you got lined up paul? :-*
-
Those look fantastic! :-*
-
Fabulous - any plans for dismounted uhlans?
-
Damn you Paul!
:D

The second pack of BEF is underway then onto commands for both and then Maxims and teams for both forces.
-
Great stuff, look forward to seeing the German command.
-
To much good stuff! :)
-
Those really are very good. Looking forward to the command packs.
-
Really nice!
-
Exquisite work Mr Hicks. :D
-
More amazing Shiny!
If possible, I would prefer command packs w 3 NCO's and just 1 officer. The platoons in 1914 were huge with numerous sub-sections.
And mounted and dismounted cavalry would be great too!
Paul, are you selling these through Empress? And when will they be available?
-
Lovely work Mr Hicks!
-
Those BEF are gorgeous, I feel a sudden strange suction in the region of my wallet!
-
Goodness me those German's are outstanding will this range be available via empress when ready paul?
-
Yep Empress miniatures will be the place to get these.
-
Yep Empress miniatures will be the place to get these.
A small Brit force might be in order ;)
-
When you say onto the commands for both will that be including battalion command?
-
I will do battalion command including some figures that I don't think have been done yet by other ranges.
-
I really love the British.
I won't be tempted. No, I won't.
If you include a Warhorse special edition kit, I might be tempted. Go, Joey! lol
-

Now that is very interesting! Damn you Hicksy! 8)

Most intriguing.
-
I will not be complaining about a battalion command my Mr Hicks. Previous undone figures - The Padre?

Now that would be a nice addition.

These might break my resistance and get me into a WWI dalliance
-
Field punishment set, with a defaulter tied to a cartwheel? The old crucifixtion.
-
Well thats the last pack finished for wave one of the Mutton Chop 1914 range. They are now with Griffin moulds and I will post news as soon as Empress MIniatures get the castings to sell! All the best.

-
Oh! A must buy! :-*
-
Those are tremendous! They are full of character.
-
Excellent Paul. Bundles of character.
-
It has to be said Mr Hicks, you are one of the few sculptors who gets the SMLE right. So many others do it too short or looking like a blunderbuss. Your versions always have the elegance of that fine rifle down to a tee. These figures look superb. Will they be compatible with the lovely range you did for Musketeer?
-
Hi Trooper thank you for the kind words on the SMLE. At this point I have to hold my hands up and say I didn't sculpt the SMLE it has been kindly donated from Empress miniatures. This way we can be assured that their Jazz Age range and my WW1 range will work together.
In regards to the MM range I sculpted they will work perfectly along side. I have used Ebob puppets for all of my ranges so you want find any strange height difference.
Paul Hicks
-
Paul,
I really like these and I think that the faces are particularly good. They have a angularity and gauntness about them that I think goes well with the professional Tommy, being the sweepings of empire and all.
LB
-
The last pack sculpted?? That means..... the command packs are sculpted as well?
Can we see 'em?!
-
Oh, Zee Germans are wunderbar. :-*
-
Paul
Will these be avaliable direct from you? Would like to think you are getting everything for these figures? Excellent work.
-
They will be on sale via Empress miniatures. They handle packing, promotion via website, ordering and taking them to shows . This gives me the time to sculpt more figures so I'm more than happy!
-
Great news Paul... so what does the first wave of packs consist of?
-
The first wave will be the four packs of infantry seen in this thread. The German command is pretty much done as is the Maxim 08 gun and crew. Wave two will be the infantry command and MMGs for both nations.
Paul
-
Paul, will you be doing the other nations?

Those are rather splendid, looking forward to splashing paint on them.
-
Great work Paul on the German Command WIPs.
I'm wondering after the dust settles that you could consider little Belgian please.
Cheers,
Helen
-
Nice work! The uniforms look spot-on so far!!!
My only possible query is whether the cuffs shouldn't be Brandenburg, to fit in with the OR's?
And I'm trying to figure out what bit of kit the sword-guy has on his chest?
-
The Germans are herrlich.
-
More excitement from my end :-* :-* :-*
Darrell.
-
Those look great! :-*
Love the katana lol

The figures are not finished so cuffs are yet to be done. It indeed is a map case.
Paul
-
Wow come on and get them out :-*
-
They do look fantastic! I'm really looking forward to these beeing released.
-
Figures look great.
Do all the models have big ear's ?
I do know some people like that, but not everybody.

I have been adding WIPs up on the Muttonchop Facebook page as soon as they are done. https://www.facebook.com/MuttonChopMiniatures
I understand that some of you don't use Facebook but it is so easy for a Ludite like me:)
Paul
-
Beautiful work, as always! :-* :-*
-
Looking good Paul, I see I shall be starting a 2nd regiment.
-
Looking good!
-
Marvellous work as per Mr Hicks :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Darrell.
-
If you make the same work about the early war french... it will be very cool to go with my great war miniatures minis !!
-
I like these with Mutze even more than the Pickelhaube ! Any chance of Stahlhelm heads?
-

I believe Paul is going to do some later war figures at some point. Late war figs would appear very different - different cut of the uniform and different equipment as well as headgear.
-
Excellent - then we have Stosstruppen to look forward to.
-
Cant wait for later war. Going to have to snag them for my Frikorp games.
-
Realy nice indeed
-
Any further information on when these will be out?
