Title: New dollies for Mutton Chop Miniatures
Post by: Paul Hicks on January 09, 2014, 01:24:49 PM
It's been a while since I sculpted something for my own Mutton Chop range. With the birth of our daughter Lily we needed  a range that would help with the bills and could hopefully mean that Lily would be cared by myself and Kerry. So I chose a range I wanted to do for a long time in my own style and pack selection. It's a period I first ever converted a Tamiya figure to way back in 1988 after buying my first ever Osprey book.

(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/paulhicks1975/DSCF0005_zps841eb8c4.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/paulhicks1975/media/DSCF0005_zps841eb8c4.jpg.html)

(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/paulhicks1975/DSCF0006_zps8106e2b3.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/paulhicks1975/media/DSCF0006_zps8106e2b3.jpg.html)

Well this is the start of those new figures from over Christmas. Any guesses of what they could be?:).
The dollies also have great uses for the current Mutton Chop range as well other Inter-War British . These will go to the mould makers real soon and I look forward to getting stuck in.

Will be interesting to follow. I've realised that a lot of models I like, regardless of manufacturer, have been sculpted by you. :)

My idea is to first start with the BEF and Early War Germans. Once they are done I want to progress to later forms of kit. Really looking forward to this project.

Sounds good. I liked the stuff you initially did for Bill, just needed alot more variety in troops/poses. And some Germans...  ;)

These look like they'll be very nice indeed. As an aside , the Viet Minh you are doing for Red Box look amazing, I was thinking about getting some for the later conflict and using them as VC with obsolete weapons. Ever thought about doing a Vietnam range, I'll bet they would be immensely popular!

Really interesting news, Paul.
I´m a fanatic of your figures, and these one can be very useful as Royal Marines against your "red" German sailors, by example.
But if you put them pith helmets, they could be used in the Third Afghan War (please!).

Very nice!

Well for the NW Frontier presumably Empress will go for  the more typical combination of shorts, shirts and Wolesleys and/ or Bombay Bowlers. Chaps in temperate  1914 uniforms with puttees doesn't really scream the Frontier to me.

Just accept these as  they are, superb sculpts of 1914 era British infantry.

You will have to bear with me as I will be doing this range when I can fit it in with other work. I plan to do the BEF first and then work my way through the war. Keep your eyes peeled and I will post pictures as soon as they are back on the workbench.

Mr Hicks, you need a clon of yourself, IMHO. Fortunately, I have a lot of projects that use your figures, so I can wait without pain  :). Sailors could be a good adition to the range...

Now, that's an idea!  ;D

Paul, you might want to look into the cuffs of the MG crew again. As far as I know, the MG units used the same tunics as the Jäger at the beginning of the war. Which means the Swedish cuff pattern instead of the Brandenburger one of the line infantry.

If I'm wrong, please let me know!

I think you are getting confused with the independent machine battalions

I think you are getting confused with the independent machine battalions

I'm not sure, the books I have aren't 100% clear on that issue (just reading them again). The original independent Maschinengewehrabteilungen (MG detachements) definitely had the Jäger tunics. The MG companies that got added to the line infantry and Jäger regiments used their 'old' uniforms until the change of uniforms in 1915/16. I interpret it like they also had the Jäger tunics as the original Maschinengewehrabteilungen did BUT one could also see it the other way around (i.e. they had the same uniforms as their parent regiments).

There were also some line infantry regiments that used the Swedish cuffs. I'm sure there won't be a problem to find photos of both versions (not to mention other versions like the German cuffs of the Saxon units, etc.).

Have to agree that men added to companies would keep their uniform, but battalions MG companies already on the battalion strength would surely have the same cuffs as the rest of the battalion? All very confusing but I think Paul is Ok to continue as they are.

Post by: Phil Robinson on February 11, 2014, 02:00:41 PM
I have checked through the books I have, none note that battalion MG companies had different cuffs to the rest of the battalion, not saying they didn't of course, but I would have thought it worthy of note if it was the norm.

Perhaps someone else will chip in with more info.

The one photo with an identifying battalion that I have is not clear enough to ascertain the cuff pattern :?

More amazing Shiny!

If possible, I would prefer command packs w 3 NCO's and just 1 officer. The platoons in 1914 were huge with numerous sub-sections.

And mounted and dismounted cavalry would be great too!

It has to be said Mr Hicks, you are one of the few sculptors who gets the SMLE right. So many others do it too short or looking like a blunderbuss. Your versions always have the elegance of that fine rifle down to a tee. These figures look superb. Will they be compatible with the lovely range you did for Musketeer?

Hi Trooper thank you for the kind words on the SMLE. At this point I have to hold my hands up and say I didn't sculpt the SMLE it has been kindly donated from Empress miniatures. This way we can be assured that their Jazz Age range and my WW1 range will work together.

In regards to the MM range I sculpted they will work perfectly along side. I have used Ebob puppets for all of my ranges so you want find any strange height difference.

Paul,
I really like these and I think that the faces are particularly good. They have a angularity and gauntness about them that I think goes well with the professional Tommy, being the sweepings of empire and all.

They will be on sale via Empress miniatures. They handle packing, promotion via website, ordering and taking them to shows . This gives me the time to sculpt more figures so I'm more than happy!

Great news Paul... so what does the first wave of packs consist of?
Title: Re: New dollies for Mutton Chop Miniatures
Post by: Paul Hicks on March 08, 2014, 08:46:21 PM
The first wave will be the four packs of infantry seen in this thread. The German command is pretty much done as is the Maxim 08 gun and crew. Wave two will be the infantry command and MMGs for both nations.

Nice work! The uniforms look spot-on so far!!!

My only possible query is whether the cuffs shouldn't be Brandenburg, to fit in with the OR's?

And I'm trying to figure out what bit of kit the sword-guy has on his chest?

I believe Paul is going to do some later war figures at some point. Late war figs would appear very different - different cut of the uniform and different equipment as well as headgear.
