Title: "White Death" - our new game for TACTICA (Link to our handout p.4)
Post by: Admiral Benbow on January 12, 2014, 03:28:14 PM: For the upcoming TACTICA-show in Hamburg in February we've prepared a new game: "1812 White Death - Napoleon's retreat from Moscow". It's a skirmish level game for one gamemaster and from 2 to 4 players encountering different missions on this gruesome and disastrous campaign. No prior rules knowledge necessary, so anybody interested can have a game with us.

Game concept by team member Bernhard, terrain by Rob, GrandManner and others, most miniatures of the Perry range painted to showcase standard and two well-known twin brothers have already booked a game with us ..., so it's time for some teaser pics:

At the moment we have a host of arround 40 cossacks for the game, also two sledge guns from Westfalia.
While waiting for milicia from the Perrys, as well as russian Jaegers, we use some from Foundry and some from Front Rank miniatures.
Also we have some russian cuirassiers as conversions in winter coats.
Still on the painting table are some french horsemen and some civilians and a conversion of the gringos 40s Murat.

I have some of the old Foundry Cossacks,
I have been holding on for years to do a game of the retreat.
The Perry figures are just outstanding.
I have played around with some Perrys and green stuff.
Not real happy with how the figures turned out, but plan to give it another try.
Also the Westfalia sledge gun is prefect for the game.
I look forward to seeing photos of the game.
What is posted already is outstanding.

Post by: Elbows on January 14, 2014, 04:27:27 AM: A buddy of mine has hosted a similar game at several conventions before - it's a home brew retreat from Moscow style game. It's interesting because you start with a group of French soldiers in the center of the table. They must move something like 500 inches to escape. As you roll the distance, you only move the terrain on the sides of the board. There is a big pool of event cards. The army also starts with morale. This morale you can trade or sacrifice to ignore certain cards etc. It's a tough game but thoroughly unique. Very cool.

The old Foundry cossacks are always a good choice. I especially loved the priest. So much that I think about bringing him to the game as a special event cards.

@Elbows That is a nice game concept :-) We also do lots of event cards.
The basic game setting is a crossover of table top and roleplaying elements.
There will be two or up to four "companies" of retreating troops. And they get different missions in every game.
These "companies" fight against the game not against each others.

Thank you :) No special preferences though playing the campaign modus sounds quite fun. I will have to take care of our LAM Tactica stand from time to time but I think this year I should have enough time to participate.

Apparently her great great grandfather and his mates found a payroll wagon full of gold on the retreat, when he got back to the Tyrol he could buy a farm, bung the church and marry his sweetheart, well that's the story.

Her dad died in the retreat of 1944, spooky huh!? o_o

It is original from Eureka, but I can not find it on the Eureka homepage ???
We have also a very nice conversion of the Gringos Murat :D
It is based on a historic painting that shows Murat in a splendid red coat.

The Victrix conversions you see in the AARs and on my blog are mine as well as about 16 Perry figures I painted during the last weeks. Eight of them are just finished and I'll introduce them next weekend. ;)

I haven't got time to play (I was busy with our By Fire & Sword presenations) but I'd like to thanks one guy from your team, who took some time and described me some mechanics. It's always nice to have great conversation.

I've started to search for Korundsand for snow and bought some French and Cossacks miniatures from Perry's range. I hope rulebook will be ready soon, cause I'd love to introduce it to our gaming group.

EDIT: I've just found source of Korund Sand in Poland! How much have you used for 4'x4' table? 0.5 kg will be sufficient?

Thanks for the compliments. On the boards you saw at Tactica on the 2 tables i used roughly 3 or 4 kg's of Korundsand (corundom? sand/powder?).
The wood glue soaks up loads of it.

I have a question. Do you have any demo rules? I was able to interested almost a dozen wargamers into this project and we would like to give it a try. Is there any possibility to send me some basic rules?

there was a smal demo version with some illustrations, that I wanted to give away, but you saw that there were copyright problems
with some of the illustrations. For that reason I cancelled this version.
All material will go to a lawyer for copyright questions befor it will go out.
Because that is not for free and it will consume some time there will be no rules published during the next months.
I am very sory about that. But the hints of former user - and he was right with what he was writing - left no
other way open. So there will be no free test version, because prepublishing costs exploded.

We hope to be out during spring 2015.
For sure there will be another big game at the Tactica 2015.
There is plenty new stuff and a publisher now.

As I'm just getting started with this period, and I'm about to place an order for some Perry figs, may I ask how many figures you need per side to play a two-person game? (Two players plus GM) Also do you need wolves, sledges, wagons, etc.? Or are those just optional?

Thanks for the info. If I get started now, I may actually have the figures painted by next spring :D

I was to stressed in my real life job.
But it was some time left, to test rules for french light cavalry and incorporate them as a troop choise into the rules.
So now you can even play the famous Baden Hussars at their Death Charge at the Berezina.
Here (i hope) comes a picture of one of these nice guys. A conversion from ADC Colonel Heymes FN 118 Perry miniatures.
Next to do over the summer - and more intensive in the autum - is testing the campaign rules.
With the infantry they worked well, but cavalry brings some dramatic changes that has to be handled.
