Title: Making a space freighter from cork...
Post by: Predatorpt on January 12, 2014, 05:20:28 PM
So...we all know that cork can be used to make bases and various buildings. But can it be used to make a space freighter?

I don't know, but I'm going to try and do one for a group build on a Portuguese forum!

Of course I'm only doing part of it in cork - the main body:

I reinforced the interior with more cork, plastic spacers and lots of hot-glue. Superglue wasn't enough:

If everything fails, I can use it as a cork planter for flowers  :P

But this is just the body of the ship. The cargo hold will be double and detachable. And for that, I'm going to use old Suchard Express (a chocolate powder) boxes. They have these bright red covers that look like doors! The'll go bellow the ship, like this:

See what I mean about looking like doors (and I now see the body of the ship is curving at the middle  :'()?

But I wanted them to be able do open at both ends. So I cut the bottom of one of the boxes:

and then added another red cover. Now I have a cargo hold that can be opened from both sides, a bit like a RORO ship:

And now, to work on the rest!

When I clicked on the topic I expected wine corks and a ship a few inches long. This is a big 'un, and a big project! Looking forward to see what you do.

Glad you liked. And that reminds me that I need to take some comparison pics with 28mm figures  >:(

My thoughts exactly! What scale is it?  8) 8)

Ok, still no scale pictures...I know. ;D I'll try and take some on the next couple of days.

But I found the perfect engines - water bottle caps (the blue ones) and a big ketchup one:

And for the command module - a Pizza Hut dessert :

and a bottle cap from a deodorant:

make this:

My idea is to make this module also work as an escape pod. I'll probably use magnets to attach it to the main body of the vessel. The final look I'm aiming for is this:

To do (besides taking scale pictures!):

- think about where to put all the greebles
- make some sort of landing gear; a radar/comms mast; a small turret to take care of those pesky space pirates

Looking forward to seeing this greeblied and completed!

By way of scale, if your big orange utility knife takes standard (Olfa) snap-blades, it's probably about six inches long (I just measured mine) so this is a big beast - 18+ inches long, nose to tail!

very cool, but rather modest for a freighter don't you think?

Since I can't paint due to an injury, worked some more on the freighter, with my brother's help. But before anything else, the comparison pictures! With AT-43 figures and old Void Marines (hey, they were the only figures available at the time):

With an AT-43 container inside:

Void figure inside:

I'll post the rest later today.

Nahhh, it's supposed to be a small ship, 2 or 3 crew members only  ;) Just a local system freighter.

So, as you can see by the pictures already posted, I covered the cork structure with adhesive paper labels of different formats:

until I got this:

Then there was a lot of sanding:

I just hope it's enough for the paint to grab on the plastic!

At least the superglue worked on the "engine"

I've filled the bottom part of the vehicle with cardboard and old paper stickers. It can stand to a lot of weight:

And then glued some "details" to it (forgot to take pictures of all the pipes, sneaking between all the red parts!):

Also made 2 lateral engines with plastic boxes and bottle caps (the blue parts):

With the open containers:

Still need to work on the bridge/command capsule.

Yep, let's just see if I can paint it, lol. Bought a cheap airbrush and compressor from Lidl just for projects like these  ::)
