Title: Jungle Pulp - A "Pulp Alley" AAR - with added Jungle WIP pics
Post by: Ramirez Noname on January 17, 2014, 05:17:00 PM
Ok, so I have been in possession of the “Pulp Alley” rules and cards for a little while, but now we have actually managed to put them to good use. A couple of games, admittedly just before the Christmas break but here is the first part ...

1943, somewhere deep in the Amazon. A special unit of German Military personnel have worked their way into the interior in search of a statute; the group has secret orders from the highest authority to obtain the statue at any cost. However, it appears the orders are not quite as secret as they should be; the intrepid adventure and agent Professor von Nash and his team of helpers have also made their way to the same location to prevent the statue falling into the “wrong” hands ...

A table full of jungle – nothing like starting off easy and this certainly wasn’t. Line of sight mostly blocked and some nasty little perils lurking in the undergrowth.

The leader of the Military group searching for that elusive safe passage through the jungle

One of the members of the Military group locates a chest containing a mysterious map and succeeds in secreting in his back pack, whilst his comrades ...

... try and out manoeuvre Professor von Nash and his trusty hound “Hemmingway” ...

... but they are spotted and Hemmingway makes a dash for them (several times) ...

Meanwhile, in another remote part of the jungle, Klaus and Imbi, the Professors assistants get a little too close to an over-friendly carnivorous plant.

The goal is reached eventually, although the Military group had been seriously delayed by some carefully aimed shots

To the victor, perils passed and the statue may have fallen into the wrong hands! (or has it ?)

The chase is on ... where will the mysterious map lead them once the statue has been safely delivered to Berlin?

Miniatures mostly Artizan, with a couple of Foundry and Bluemoon and Jungle terrain virtually all pet shop fodder, some of which is mounted on Snapdragon resin hedges. The statue enclosure is Games Workshop and the Cthulhu statue from the bits box; all painted and created by “The Somnambulist” and myself.

Great board! Love that photo angle looking out from the temple -- not an easy shot to take!

Do you have a tutorial anywhere on your jungle pieces? I'm always looking for new ideas...

Thanks guys,

Mike, the bases for the jungle terrain were the old Snapdragon hedges; I painted the bases a dark brown and gave them a two stage dry brush to lighten them up. The prepared sections were drilled using a 1.0mm bit in various locations and pieces of jungle scenery glued into the drilled holes. Once everything was dry, I applied some of my usual scatter material to the bases so they blend in with my gaming board. I'll try and get some photos posted of some of the stages.

Dave, (and Joroas) thanks for the heads up on Mila's "Phantom Agent" promo.

Now to get the next adventure posted.

Thanks guys for all the positive comments.

I have the next adventure to post up soon, but I managed to find some shots of the jungle pieces as work in progress. So in answer to Mike Demana's question ....

Title: Re: Jungle Pulp - A "Pulp Alley" AAR - with added "Desert"
Post by: Ramirez Noname on January 24, 2014, 03:11:37 PM
After escaping the treacherous jungles of South America, our fool hardy adventurers ducked and dived across Europe (with a brief stop in Berlin) to find themselves once again in the vast expanse of the Egyptian Desert.

Reports had reached Berlin that a transport aircraft delivering some equipment to a listening station in the Libyan Desert had been blown off course. Running short of fuel and hoping to make it to a safe landing strip the crew had jettisoned most of the cargo over some fairly inhospitable terrain. The intrepid German Military dispatched its crack group of troops. Professor von Nash and his group of bounty hunters got wind of the German High Commands instructions and have dashed to the desert to see if they can pick up some valuable loot, which they might be able to sell to the highest bidder.

Our story continues ...

The minor plot points – A torn photo currently with Ahmed (a possible Agent), a top secret radio being carried by Ahmed’s bearer, a concealed shipment of ammunition stored in an old barrel and some dismantled weaponry in its stowage case.

An overall view of the, mostly featureless, terrain. The several areas of ruins were considered perilous for this adventure and the large statue-faced tomb entrance is the major plot point. The other plot points were distributed within the ruins.

The military slowly start to head towards the various ruins, fully aware of the Professors group visible just the other side of them.

The Professors’ group, keen to get their hands on the loot, spread out in all directions to grab what they can, having to dodge bullets as they go ...

Whilst the military attempt to form a defensive area in the entrance of the grand tomb ...

Meanwhile, Wu-Lu manages to reach the bearer with the secret radio equipment. Some withering fire forces her to dive for cover, dragging the bearer with her.

Realising they cannot hold the tomb entrance, and attracting fire from all directions, the military withdraw, the Professor standing defiant in the distance having managed to obtain the torn photo from Ahmed.

As before, the miniatures are mostly Artizan, with a couple of Foundry and Bluemoon. However, almost all the Desert terrain has been built by The Somnambulist; the tomb entrance being a really great scratch-built piece and it was good to be able to use it. The German Military League was painted and created by “The Somnambulist” and based on the league produced by Dave and Mila from Pulp Alley.

Great reports, Harvey.
Wonderful terrain, minis and atmospherics.
 :-* :-* :-*

Whilst that Desert is most excellent, the Jungle is truly top-drawer!
Have no fear that I shall be soundly stealing the 'holes in hedges' idea.
It creates a wonderful base for the greenery to cling to.
Genius!

And many thanks for the inspiration.
 :D

Not so many thanks for steering me in the direction of Pulp Alley even more, though.
I am seriously trying to resist Pulp at the moment.
Too many projects....

@mason: resistance is futile and only delays the inevitable. just accept that you'll be doing pulp so you can enjoy it.

@Somnambulist:  i thought the jungle was the best and then you have this awesome tomb entrance.  truly superb on both counts.  i was expecting some "guardians of the red orb" to pop out and start sniping anyone who got close to the entrance.

I just need some time to get my house in order before I go adventuring is all I ask.

Just caught on to this.....

I have hovered over the PA option several times lately and almost bought it.
The only problem at the moment is the project plan does not need another tangent added to it....although you are right, I could probably play straight away with my figure collection.

Just talked myself into a corner there, didn't I...... ;)

the jungle terrain centre piece is Games Workshop's "Arcane Ruins" - not too sure if they are still in production.

Are the rock clusters done with cork bark? They look great! I need to do something similar for Afghanistan terrain, though cork bark is hard to come by here in the colonies.  :-[

Thanks Todd,

The rocky outcrops are castings made using the Woodlands Scenics rock moulds. Rather than using them in the more usual vertical for making cliffs, I laid the castings horizontally to form low rocky outcrops. They are also partially buried by the sand and gravel to give a more natural feel to them.
