Title: Hooverville shanty town (updated w/ pics and tutorial link)
Post by: section 8 on February 11, 2014, 05:55:22 PM
Every Depression era game needs a Hooverville (http://rubbler-rouser.blogspot.com/2014/02/my-depression-era-hooverville.html). So toward that end I have been working on some shacks and rubble piles. I finally got them all painted up this last weekend. I think they will work nicely for my pulp games and my 2ACW games.

This is a shot of a few of my favorites out of the seven shacks I built, the rest are on my blog if you care to take a look.  Hooverville (http://rubbler-rouser.blogspot.com/2014/02/my-depression-era-hooverville.html).

Thanks

Very nice! Those look like they would be useful in seedy south Asian port cities as well.

Excellent work. Just the right amount of detail to tell the story and catch the eye.

Also, your research is classy as hell. Kudos.

If you felt motivated, a couple of pictures taken the next time you build one of these little gems would create a wonderful step-by-step or tutorial. It would be a significant contribution to the community.

Mr Murch! Long time fan.  Let me be the first (2nd?, 3rd? nth?) to fawn at your feet and welcome you to LAF.

Now if you are really THAT Bob Murch, I painted dozens of your sculpts, if not welcome anyway!  :D

The clue is in, if not the name, the the little globe icon in bob_murch's personals.

Nice shed, by the way. A shanty town is useful for oh so many contexts

Very nice shed, can we see a photo of them all?

Can I second the welcome to Bob Murch. I'm still painting that order from you that I received in November, photo here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=59782.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=59782.0)

Fantastic miniatures, I just wish I was a faster painter!

Thanks guys!

Honestly my first thought this morning when I got online to catch up on my reading, and saw that there were so many replies to this thread, was that someone must have hacked my blog and replaced all my pictures with porn or something. I did not realize that Mr. Murch was a Newby on these forums, just kind of assumed that he had always been a member. After all where else would people who love pulptastic action hang out on the Internet. Anyway, welcome.

I will try and do a quick tutorial on how to build them. They are pretty simply to do. My biggest problem is that I get so engrossed in what I am doing that I usually forget to take photos.

Oh, we like simple... Our problem (well, mine anyhow) is a tendency to over-complicate.  ;D

They look very good. I have a tutorial on my blog for the constructing of shanty town, one of my earlier ones so not much pictures but maybe useful. If permitted by the section 8 I will post a link here as I'm not looking to hijack this superb thread  ;)

Post away brother! I would like to check them out.

I have that problem quite a bit :D

Tonight I gathered all my shacks up to take them downstairs and get them out of the way until I use them in a game. On the way down the stairs I tripped  :o and they went flying down the stairs. Luckily only one was slightly damaged and I managed to not break my neck. My son got to hear lots of driving words though!   :D

...and thanks again guys.

Thankfully you and your shacks survived the fall. Great work.  Don't worry about the new vocabulary, some one was going to teach him that eventually.  :D

Thanks, here's the link to the shanty tutorial: http://wargameterrain.blogspot.be/2012/10/how-to-shanty-town.html (http://wargameterrain.blogspot.be/2012/10/how-to-shanty-town.html) and here's another link to a post on how to create cheap and nice corrugated roofing: http://wargameterrain.blogspot.be/2012/11/how-to-scratchbuild-corrugated-roofing.html (http://wargameterrain.blogspot.be/2012/11/how-to-scratchbuild-corrugated-roofing.html) I have also made some more modern shanty towns in the past, I don't have a tutorials but have these pictures.
