Title: Ain't that a Kick in the Head? (A Fallout Project) Nov 30th Update
Post by: WulframMors on February 13, 2014, 01:52:25 AM
Welcome to this little thread of mine, showing of the fruits of my Fallout-specific project.

I've been lurking for months now, with a few minor posts here and there. I finally figured I'd show what I'd been working on.

NCR
First up, an NCR Patrol Ranger (courtesy of Brother Vinni) who made his debut back in the painting club. He's currently the only member of the NCR I have, but a few Veteran Rangers are making their way over from Brother Vinni as we speak.

You can't really see it from here, but he's got an approximation of the NCR Ranger insignia painted on his shoulder pads using a toothpick. Too small for me to make it accurate, but it looks good from a distance. I may eventually try using decals on him, along with my Brotherhood and Enclave.

Enclave
Only have the one eyebot and power-armored trooper (both from Brother Vinni) for now, but the rest of the squad are sitting ready to be reposed and such. The eyebot's laser is a cut-up 40k space marine scope. A little big perhaps, but I like it.

Remnants of the Unity
I'm really rather proud of this "little" guy (again, from Brother Vinni). Looks suitably imposing standing next to puny little humans. He's currently the only Super Mutant I've got on the horizon, though if Reaper ever makes a Bones version of their "Mega-Mutant" or Messyart gets his own Super Mutants perfected, then I'm sure he'll get some company.

I've got a decent bit more than this all painted up, including a raider gang and the beginnings of a Brotherhood squad, and they're not all Brother Vinni stuff! Unfortunately the pictures came out a touch crap and it's dark here already, so it'll probably have to wait till tomorrow.

I intend to use these in a home-brewed skirmish rules system with some rpg elements, but that's pretty early in development.

As a final aside, I'd like to thank everyone on this board for all the inspiration they've provided with their own efforts. Keep at it!

:-* :-* :-* lovely start! That handlebar moustache screams post apocalyptia-70's-authority! And a nice way to introduce yourself around these parts.

You've whetted my appetite for more, you better keep painting, lol.

Cheers

When you've got a dragon done up, fancy putting up a shot of it next to the ogre?

Lovely models, by the way!

Luckily, I should have a nice batch of post-apocalyptic goodness coming today. Thanks for the enthusiasm, I'm glad you like them.

Definitely! It might be a while, as I suspect all the snow coming down around here will delay the dragon's arrival. But he'll be the center of attention once he's here.

Absolutely ace!

Thanks! They were quite fun to paint up.

Well, I promised more and here it is:

Brotherhood of Steel
The current extent of my Brotherhood forces, all from Brother Vinni.

This one had some doodads added to his Laser Rifle for added authenticity.

And Gatling Laser dude for some firepower:

The power pack adds some color to the mostly uniform armor:

I really hope Brother Vinni makes some T-5lb armor soon. As it stands, I have another T-45d Paladin on the way.

Plus, this scruffy looking Scribe:

A nice group shot. The Scribe really adds some color to the squad:

Robots
Well, a robot at least.

I've got a bunch more Brother Vinni Securitrons that have yet to be assembled, each with a unique paintjob waiting in store for them. I've also picked up some Vinni's Gutsy/Handy models, but I'm waiting on some extra eyestalks before I move forward with them

Critters
A Bark Scorpion, a repainted Dnd miniature. Also a toxic waste barrel, for that warm radioactive glow we've all come to know and love.

And some Brother Vinni Ghouls:

Wastelanders
This here's the Last Desert Ranger, the lone holdout who refused to be absorbed into the NCR Rangers but wouldn't stop defending Nevada either. He roams the desert, striking down raiders and Legionnaires alike with his trusty sniper rifle. I've named him Russell, in homage to Someguy2000, a Fallout New Vegas modder who specialized in quest mods.

The mini came from the old prepainted Star Wars line, Bouush I think, but with a head swap, greenstuffed cowboy hat, and some modifications to the rifle.

I'd also planned to show off my raider gang, but this post is already pretty big as it is. So expect it in a day or two.

C&C is always welcome.

The BoS look fantastic Wulfram, and the scribe looks spot on.

The wastelander certainly looks like a Russell. I think every Russell i have met has been a little 'wild'.

Thanks for the praise everyone. I intend to keep at it, though updates after today will be further apart as this is the end of my already-done collection. But have no fear, more is coming.

In regards to my ruleset, it is really very early stages, but it's designed with small model counts and a persistent campaign in mind. I've tried to keep the Fallouty feel in the stats and whatnot, and I intend to have a robust campaign system with random events and such, as well as some board-gamey elements if you will. I feel a certain RPG choices/consequences kind of thing is essential to the Fallout experience, but we'll see how it goes. It's currently undergoing some changes so as to be able to accomodate larger warbands if necessary.

Awesome work sir love them all.

Have you considered perhaps modding mantics KoW Ogres into supermutants?

Hmm, if I had some good heads to stick on em... Thanks for the lead!

And finally to the update. I would have gotten it in sooner if possible, but real-life got in the way. But hey, I got to fit an extra raider in I painted up today, so hurrah!

Raiders
To start, a group shot. Which is remarkably hard to achieve as it turns out. That or I'm crap with the camera.

And now the close-ups! Beginning with spear guy, originally Magog from the Heroclix line. He was a bit too tall, but was cut down to size. He's still pretty tall, but not unreasonably so. I picked him up along with a few copies as I figured the heads would make good Fiend-types. what with the horned helmet. I think I may end up painting some tats on him, but we'll see.

Chainsaw and brass knuckles, so you can punch and tear all at the same time. He was made using a Star Wars mini, a spare head, Wargames Factory chainsaw and backpack, and a greenstuff mohawk.

And a shot of his backpack:

This guy was originally a pre-painted Adventurer mini from Fantasy Flight. A bit of greenstuff and a new lick of paint turned him into a good wastelander who can double up as a raider.

This guy came from the horrorclix line, a Survivalist I think. I like to think he's got the Mr. Sandman perk from the game. Imagine seeing that mask as he slides a knife into your neck.

A greenstuff welding mask and some new paint gave this Star Wars mini a very Fallout feel. He could easily be used as a town guard as well as a raider.

Cop Killer over here was cobbled together from three different Heroclix figs. I'm considering putting an anarchy symbol on his helmet.

Seems he's managed to get his grubby hands on some Sugar Bombs.

This crazy lookin' fella' wasn't done up till tonight, which accounts for why he's absent from the group photo. Like the previous psychopath, he was strung together from various clix figures, a rifle from a heroscape mini, and some greenstuff. He's also my first attempt at dark skin. I rather like him.

And finally, the leader of this little bloodthirsty band. He almost looks like a player character. I've since painted some eyes, but forgot to snap a pic so just stick some googly eyes on your screen.

And because at least on of them had to have a thing for severed body parts, here's a shot of his back. Maybe it belonged to his predecessor.

Well that's that, hope you like 'em.

Good variety to the figures and they certainly look as pleasant as a bunch of anarchist bloodthirsty raiders. I'm not inviting them to my picnic anytime soon. :D

I've never considered heroclix before, are they good with a paint strip?

Cheers

Huh, I kind of disregarded the Star Wars line for being an improper scale, but you've done well with them. Its nice to see the range of models that you've used for that one group, with a decent amount of variety for that rag tag look. Ooh, and a suit of Metal Armour based on the one from the original games on the leader too right? Ooooh...  :D

Those are some neat paintjobs overall with your stuff (heh, better than the hack jobs I put out). Are you going for a variety of small groups for your game, or just focussing on a few so you have the choice to spot out individuals with a pool of others? Personally I prefer platoon sized games, but a smaller scale one based around scavenging groups/ scouts/ etc is appropriate for the setting. Are you intending to include a scavenging mechanic in your rules, or things like lockpicking and hacking? There must be at least five Fallout thread's here, but we're all using our own homebrew rulesets. ^^

Now to steal some ideas (for some reason I never thought about painting up toxic barrels for one) and slink away until another tasty morsel passes close to my hiding place. Ah... I mean keep it coming!

Post by: WulframMors on November 28, 2014, 03:41:08 AM
Damn, it's been a while... and while I can't say I've been dead, alive doesn't quite seem right either. A strange sort of unlife, with only the occasional mini passing beneath my brush or x-acto.

Too all the folks who commented but I didn't respond too, thanks for the feedback, sorry for the slow response. Addressing various topics, the Clix and Star Wars prepaints were, if memory serves, simply painted over, though some of the more Greenstuff heavy conversions required some priming. The scale is a bit all over the place, but if you pick and choose you can get a nice variety of sizes. Humans ain't all the same now, let alone the mutants of the future.  :)

As for rules, they've been going through some redesigns, While scavenging, lockpicking, hacking, and all that other thematic stuff is still in, I wanted to open up the size of the battles a bit. I'm aiming for warbands to consist of a small nice core of upgradeable Heroes backed up by more numerous though relatively weak Minions. I'd like to have the whole smorgasboard of factions available, with variant warband lists for each (e.g. a Ranger-only contingent for the NCR, or White Leg Tribal warband list).

Now, while I'd like to post some decent pictures of some of the newer finished stuff, or even some WIPs, decent pictures require a decent camera, something not currently in my possession. But soon.

In the mean time, here's a large, though cruddy, shot of some of my stuff, though not all of it.  Meant as a sort of teaser I suppose...

Mostly unfinished as well... I'll get right on it.

That was an unexpected, though tremendously useful gift from a friend of mine. I've been thinking of staining it to better fit my darker furniture, but I've not quite decided.

That all looks pretty cool. I look forward to more pictures. c:

Should be some up this weekend.  Including a few of your creations. You can spot some in the pic up there.

This all looks fantastic! Can't wait to see some of the finished scenery. How do you paint your rust?

Thanks. The bigger scenery bits will probably take a while, as I want to do full interiors and weathering on the Plasticville buildings. But I've got some ruins and Quonset Huts near completion at least.

As for the rust, the minis usually are the standard GW metal paints, plus some tin bitz or whatever they call their brownish metallic paint, with a coat of their old Brown Ink (old GW inks seemed to be a lot thicker than their new range, so the Brown makes for some heavy rust). A final highlight of bright silver finishes that off. The Pardulon barricades have use four different methods - the aforementioned one, another using GW's newly recommended method using two of their specialty paints, a mix of the two, and finally just successive layers of brown and silvery paints. I'll probably give some really heavy rust a go at one point, Wyrmalla style.

What's that car on the left?

Why not address it with an update?

This car was picked up at a pharmacy not far from where I live with the intention of turning it into a Highway Patrol Car such as those found in New Vegas. It's fairly close to completion, mainly need the emergency lights up top.

Next, an NCR Patrol Ranger, converted from a Brother Vinni Wasteland Scout, some BroVinni pistols, and a Wargames Factory Survivor head. Shown here posing next to the original Wasteland Scout on the left.

An NCR Veteran Ranger, also a Brother Vinni mini.

A pair of wastelanders. The one on the right is a Reaper Bones, while on the left we have a modified Star Wars mini. It used to be an alien...

A Messyart Centaur. Great model, much more in scale than the Armorcast one, and it comes with pair of heads for a more classic Fallout 1/2 look. I've got another in that style in pipeline.

Darn, I just noticed a tentacle was missing.

The glorious Messyart Deathcla... I mean Wasteland Dragon. Really cool mini, a must for any Fallout collector. The fact that the Wasteland Dragon is/will be modified to be poseable in future batches makes me giddy.

That's all for now, thanks for watching and stay tuned!

...And #2, also from BroVinni. Blonde may not have been the best choice of hair color, considering the yellow on the Vault suit.

And another BV Protectron, in Vaultie colors.

Another wastelander, this one from the Fantasy Flight Games Adventurers prepaints. Some nice pulpy figures. This one had a rifle from the bits box added, as well as a slight repaint. A good companion to the Desert Ranger from earlier in the thread methinks. Good for a caravan as well.

And lastly, a Glowing One, originally a Heroclix mini.

And of course every shot features a Dust Tactics Quonset Hut adorned with a few posters straight from New Vegas, the images courtesy of Wyrmalla. Thanks Wyrmalla, they've come in handy!

Till next time...

It's getting crowded in post apocalyptia these days... With beautiful figures  :-* :-* :-*

The whole set looks good wulfram. 8) very fallout.

The glowing one is a smart chap, nice trousers sir. Looks like he's found his way into tenpenny tower. :D

There isn't much detail in those huts is there? Looks like 2 card sides and a bit of corrugated card would do. What do you think of them?

Cheers
Matt.

Thanks y'all!

I had considered roughing up the Glowing Ones pants, and may still do it. Those are a bit too good looking for a deranged, radioactive mutant, aren't they... then again, maybe they're evidence of it's last shred of humanity, expressed in the form of a crazed obsession with keeping his pants clean.

I've got another on the way, though this one in a more raggedy state.

I dunno wulfram. I think if you rough them up they will look like dirty nice pants. Your better off writing some funny fluff for him in my book. Perhaps he is more civilized than feral ghouls? Perhaps he ain't feral, perhaps he is just the big boss man?

Now this next group has taken me a long while, as is evidenced by how long this thread has languished, but they did involve some hefty sculpting (at least by my standards). They are mostly made from GW LOTR Uruk-Hai Scouts, and Mad Robot Sadoukadi Heads.

Lo and Behold! Caesar's Legion!

Legionaries
(http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/WulframMors/DSC00550_zpsxugk6il8.jpg)

They're somewhat eclectic in uniform, but as this group is fluffed out as a more independent raiding party led by an aspiring Decanus, I don't really mind.

Frumentari/Explorer
(http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/WulframMors/DSC00556_zpsv3mjj3oa.jpg)

This Frumentari was made from a metal Uruk character, a Warlord Roman Head, and a gun from a Brother Vinni Vaultie. He's watching over this Decanus, possibly grooming him to enter the Frumentarii. The model also works as an Explorer. Unfortunately some paint rubbed off his nose, gotta fix that.

Decanus
(http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/WulframMors/DSC00555_zpsxovilfgl.jpg)

The Decanus himself, made from a resin Uruk character, pluse some Wargames Factory Survivor bits and a crest from a Warlord Roman.

So that's my Legion so far, there's still a few legionaries with more varied weapons on the way, and I recently got a box of Uruk Siege Troops to possibly turn into more generic Legion types later down the road.

Very impressive I would not have thought to use the GW Urks but they work well with the warlord heads.

Thanks everybody! These have taken a devilishly long time, but I am rather proud of how recognizable they turned out.

Wyrmalla can be indirectally credited for their creation, as he posted his converted Warlord Romans-turned-Legion and Uruks-turned-Raiders shortly after each other. So when my single sprue of Romans came in I realized they were a bit small for my taste, when I spotted the skirts on the Uruks. Coincidentally I was browsing the Mad Robot bits section, and presto, the idea was formed.

They do take a while to make, as each head has three steps of sculpting, and each torso has three steps of sculpting, but the paint scheme is relatively quick so at least there's that.

The Uruk sprue still has a few figures left; four with bows, two with shields, and one bog standard swordsmen. The swordsman will get a machete and handgun, and one of the shield bearers will get a spear, but I've not yet figured out how I want the shields to look. The archers also look to be a pain in the butt, but one should make a decent rifleman and I can always keep one with the bow; Legion is tribal in origin after all. I'd like to get full use out of the sprue, espescially as I'd like to run the Legion as a Gang-heavy League in games of Pulp Alley.

I've also got another Uruk character in white metal; the whip on his belt and shock prod I found in my bits box have convinced me into turning him into a slavemaster. And finally, a box of Uruk siege troops arrived on my doorstep, with the eventual purpose of being turned into more conventional, and likely lower-ranked, legionaries.

Oh a fallout log i haven't seen before? Must... comment!  :)

Heh, at my rate of painting/modeling, I'm not surprised you haven't seen it before. Glad you stopped by though!

"Dusts off Topic, clears cobwebs"

Well howdy folks, it's been a while now hasn't it? While I do have more painted goodies to show, I'm afraid they won't be seeing the light of day till I can get some nice pictures, probably by the end of the week.

I'd have kept silent till then if I didn't need the help of my fellow enthusiasts finding an appropriate mini for a Follower of the Apocalypse from the Fallout universe, preferably brandishing a laser pistol or some technical doodad, and perhaps hauling a medkit around.

I've been playing quite a bit of This Is Not A Test, and I think I'll be hiring a freelance Sawbones for my warband some time soon, and it seems like the perfect place to insert a Follower.

Painted this guy up a few days ago, makes a perfect Deadman Freelancer from the This Is Not A Test rules, or a Tribal of course.

I've got conflicted feelings about seeing on the table. It's always nice seeing a painted mini being used for gaming, but in this case it would be on the side of my Legion warband's hated enemies, the profligate caravanners!

Finally got around to taking some pictures of my recent progress, and the camera died almost immediately.   :-[

I got a few shots in before that, and after sifting through the bad ones all I was left with is this:

A Bounty Hunter, a Rogue Psychic, and the previously shown Deadman, all for use in games of TNT.

I'm trying to cleave close to the Fallout lore, so I painted up the Rogue Psychic as the last surviving member of the Children of the Cathedral from the first game, among whose numbers were counted the only known psychics in the Fallout world.

A Lieutenant, a Tracker, and a Runner.

As I'll be starting a TNT campaign in the not too distant future, now with a third member whose barely played a tabletop game before, I've been spurred into a painting flurry. Hopefully that means this thread should be a little more active this year.

I've still got the a few more painted minis and some terrain to show off, but sunset mean it'll have to wait for another day.

Hiya folks, though I've been working on other games since my last post over a year ago, I do have a handful of models done enough for this thread.

First off, a Super Mutant and leader for my Caravanners, from Reaper and Wreck-Age respectively.

And for my Peacekeepers, two Sacrificial Lambs and a Tactical with a Minigun. The Sacrificial Lambs are from Victoria Miniatures, converted to hold hand weapons instead of rifles. The Tactical is from Hasselfree, and makes for a good NCR plain clothes Ranger I think.

While I've been playing Dracula's America (check my sig) recently, the new scenario contest may see me return to TNT before long, so hopefully this thread won't languish so long next time!

Be Seein' Ya...
