And finally, got around to painting my Forgeworld 'coaching inn'.
It's a mouthwateringly beautiful model.
There again, at 85.00 GBP it bl**dy well ought to be.
The detail is sublime. I haven't done the interior yet, but if I tell you that the underside of the roof section has the full detail of beams, trusses and planking all lovingly rendered, you get an idea of the quality of the piece.
I hope the painting does it justice. It was a pleasure because the relief is so beautifully executed, but also a bit of a pain - all those infil plaster panels. Sheesh!
There are no instructions on where to hang the inn sign, so I improvised with a bit of balsa and some ingenuity. ;)

Shame it took Forgeworld several months to send enough correct parts to construct a model that actually fitted together properly. This is because (allegedly) they use a soft resin in which big sections are prone to warping. Therefore, the three main sections - ground floor, first floor and roof - simply didn't fit together properly on the first one. Nor on the second one. It was only when they sent me a third one, that I managed to get enough pieces together which actually fitted! And even that took a fair amount of shaving and filing and sanding with blade and Dremel.
Quite why Forgeworld don't check before they package the pieces, I don't know, but clearly - they don't, which is a bit rubbish for a model costing an awful lot of money. Crap customer service too - it took months of to-ing and fro-ing before I finally had a model I could use. For days at a time they don't answer the phone, and don't respond to emails ever. In the end, I phoned GW and asked to be put through to the CEO's office. That seemed to work. ;)
So - what to say?
Fantastic, gorgeous model. But lousy quality control and absymal customer service…
You pays your money, and takes your choice… o_o

So much great scenery coming up lately. :o :o
Damn, where's Grimm to take it all in and produce something even better. lol

;D
Thanks for sharing Captain, it looks truly lovely!
Great work
:o :o
-
Wow-ser!
Looked at the piccys over and over.
Stunning good.
-
Beautifully done Cap'n. :-* :-*
-
Looks very great and extremly inspiring. I want one too.
-
It is very nice, especially love how you have done the brick work but as I read "added balsa" and "£85.00" I thought sod that for a game of soldiers. Then when I got to the end of the post and read the rest :o;D :? :o
-
Beautifully done!

:o :o :o :o
Rhymes with "clucking bell"!!!
Very impressive piccies and model, the account of customer service......not so much.
-
It looks gorgeous, but at that price it should look gorgeous, and at that price it should be quality checked before they put it in the box.
Their customer service attitude sounds very arrogant. I'm not over impressed with that.
I think other (smaller) firms have a better customer focus - as an example Em4, very friendly a great customer relationship but so far only have one building, a slightly smaller inn but ready assembled for only £39.

Oustanding work. Some of the best I've seen.

Just out of interest what's written above the door ?

I don't know the significance of the 1412, but the sculptor is listed by Forgeworld as Simon Harris, so presumably SAH is him.

:)GREEN MAN!!!! YEAHSSSSS!!! What a great theme for an inn! And a truly awesome inn it is! :o (I'm very glad you persevered on that project.)

Maybe he finished sculpting the original on 14th Dec ?
Or could be his birthday I suppose.
Bit of a tricky one to justify in game terms, something poetic would have been nice, but tricky to do in a small space.
For a Tudor setting do you need a shrub hanging outside (to signify that beer has been freshly brewed ?).
'Alcohol serves in the compass, without it the needle will cleeve, / But it spinneth the heads of the soldier, and washes the stripes from his sleeve’

Absolute top paint job, but - looking at the price and after reading your tale - I'll stick to (prepainted or not) PMC games (Ebay) and (to be repainted...) Conflix, I guess. £85 will buy me a village...

very nicely done,looks awsome

Superb looking model. ;D Your painting has done it justice, its got lots of delightful small details that bringit to life like the writing, the small areas where the wattle is showing through etc. wonderful. :) Very much looking forward to seeing this on the tabletop. ;) Your town must look pretty impressive with your churche etc. Can we have a teaser pic with everything in situ?
-
Excellent paint job mate, really inspiring looking model.
Out of curiosity (like I'm ever going to buy one at that price), what is the interior detail like? Is there any or is it just plain?

I'll certainly try to get one. The main problem now is that I've got so much scenery on the tabletop, there's barely room for the figures! ;)

Good point sir. I shall get onto it. ;)

No, the interior detail is great - well, flooring and ceilings (!) anyway. There are no doorways in the interior walls, but I suppose that's easily rectified.
I haven't taken any interior pics yet because I've only primed the interior, but you can get the gist from the Forgeworld site, here...

By the way - I didn't actually spend all that money on it myself. It was my Christmas present from my wife... :D
-
It is splendiferous and when you think how many scenarios can be based around an Inn it isnt really that bad a price for such a lovely building and the paint work pays homage to the sculpting, well done Captain :-* :D
-
As always, Captain, I'm impressed by your painting style. Lovely details all over the building which only come out through a massive effort like yours. Like the Green Man theme a lot!
Apart from FW's customer services, I'd like to have this building as birthday present, too. :-*
-
I have one of these and it is indeed a fantastic model (although mine fit fine first time round :P ) one day I'll paint it......
-
:o :o :o :-* WoW, fantastic inn. the painting really finishes off a lovely building. After your nightmare with customer services I'd go for Pardulon buildings, just as nice and better servive so I gather (I must admit I haven't got round to buying any yet :'( :'()
Cheers

I am genuinely impressed. Very nice model, lovely brushwork. Nice pay off for all that hard work and all that buggering about with Forgeworld.
-
Fnatastic paint work! I agree that the brickwork is particularly well done.
I recognize most of the figures, but where did the chap in the spiffy green cap come from?

He is a Foundry Swashbuckler :D

Thanks. I thought he might be. I'll have to put him on the aquisition list!

Wow Cap, thats an amazing job you've done on that. Exellent. :o :-* 8)

Sorry I am Johnny-Late-Comer here; what a beautiful piece of scenere! I used to build pieces like this from scratch and it hurts not having the time anymore but the thought of forking out £85 for a piece of scenery makes my gonads shrink.
-
Well, actually, the wife forked out £85 ;) (It was my main Christmas present!)
But you're right - it's a heck of a lot of money.
There again, what I would describe as the character and impact of the piece does rather make it stand out in comparison with the usual suspects from Conflix and PMC... Perfectly good pieces, and I have almost all of them - but this baby really is a class apart (once you can get the bl**dy thing to fit together, that is... )
Hammers - if you can still build stuff like this from scratch, you're in the wrong job!
PS. Sorry about your gonads. ;)

Double good for you. This means she is not wasting money on other useless, female things like handbags and food for the kids.

You can certainly tell it is a class apart. They way the roof sags between the spar is really the sign of an artist with an eye for details.

Where ever did you get the idea that talent pays?
PS. Sorry about your gonads. ;)
That's alright. I've got other glands.
