After a few games of Spanish Civil War using Chain of Command with mate James and his extensive figures collection I was itching to paint up a platoon of my own.
I chose to do a unit of Moroccan Regulares using the rather fabulous Empress figures.
While on holiday in Cornwall last weekend I did all the painting and finished off the basing yesterday / today when I returned home.

While I was doing these I also painted a few figures for James to fill a few holes in his force:

Top work Scrivs...very atmospheric.
The Regulares offer up interesting opportunities to the Nationlist player and in some ways are as effective as the Legion.
Looking forward to an AAR seeing these guys hard at it...good job! ;)
Happy Wanderer
-
Thanks the pictures are great.
Plus the painting guide for them is A1
I think I will paint up my Moroccan first :D
Cheers

excellent collection :o :-*
-
Thanks folks, happy you like them. I've now ordered myself a load of Republican Militia to pit against them.
-
Well done!
-
Nice work!
-
Very nice work Paul! And muchos.
I'll dig out my Militia for our game Thurs
-
Thanks chaps.
Having painted the Moroccan Regulares last month, it was time to add a few supports to them, so I added a Empress Panzer 1A
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YB1nirX_auk/UxNoU_1XcmI/AAAAAAAAG98/FnGtQQpvNSY/s1600/DSCF5006.JPG)
And a pair of 50mm Mortars

Having got the Nationalists just about wrapped up, this week I made a start on the Republicans. I envisage a force of Republican Militia stiffened with a few Guardia Civil, having acquired a handful from James I purchased another pack from Empress and they arrived on Thursday.
I splashed a bit of paint on those yesterday and finished the bases today.

I've been a busy bee this week and also made a start on the Militia that are going to make up my Republican faction.
Only half a dozen so far, but I'm really enjoying painting these.

man, You have really put up some impetus
-
Scrivs - I have some Militia flags for you
-
Whoops, repainting those militia hats. That will teach me to use pictures of other peoples miniatures on the internet as a reference :)
-
Red (Socialists), Red/Black (Anarchists) i believe :)
-
I understand Red / Black Anarchists, Green for everybody else.
I quite liked the Blue & Red, but having repainted with Green I'm happy enough. May leave a few dark blues in the mix.
-
Red/Green colourblind. I knew it was a mistake to post ... lol
-
Top game with Scrivs yesterday evening. The Republican Militia did me proud - and died to a man, save for the ones that routed! :D
-
And a report will be up later....
I have repainted those hats:

I have also added another dozen Republican Militia this week.

I also did three bases of crates to use as either objectives, generic scatter or jump off points fror Chain of Command.

Your blogs are really really tempting me to complete a S.C.W. platoon for Chain of Command once my current project a 1939 German platoon is finished.
One question what colour did you use for your civil guard it's missing from the list on your blog?
-
Thanks, I have had a lot of people say the same, Empress will be happy :)
The uniform is Vallejo German Uniform
-
Slow progress this week, but I finished the Force of Arms BA-6 armoured car
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vn7A5qkBkaY/UyM-do9HlrI/AAAAAAAAHFQ/9YqmnDzgyCY/s1600/DSCF5071.jpg)

Good, I'm down to my last half dozen militia to paint.
-
Good, I'm down to my last half dozen militia to paint.
I'll bring them with me for our game tomo if they have landed by then ..
[EDIT] the very nice man from Empress, he say "Si!". Arrived this morning :)
-
Fighting these Moros is starting to get on my wick! :) Another excellent SCW game with Scrivs, another stuffing for the Republicans.
I had an excellent plan (although it was poorly executed i admit*). Pin him to the front and drive through with overwhelming numbers through the woods on my right flank.
Military maxim: no plan ever survives contact with the enemy ...
* i am going to have to get to grip with the use of Asaltos. I have used them three times now and each time forgot to tear-gas the Nationalists.
[Note to self] They need to be the spearhead of any Assault!! The clue is in the name ...
-
I've done a report of all the fun here: http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/tom-mann-centuria-tackles-regulares.html (http://scrivsland.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/tom-mann-centuria-tackles-regulares.html)

I can't argue with that AAR. A fair summary & almost no gloating ;) lol
I think i'm going to keep with the Tom Mann Centuria for our Campaign with the Regular option rather than Green
-
I've been clipping along at a fair pace with the Republican militia this week and have added a Jefe and Commissar, a couple of banners, ten more Militia and a pair of 5cm mortars for some much needed fire support.

The basing and paint jobs of these models are stunning! Really enjoyed reading through the thread.
-
can I please ask a question about the regulares?
I have been looking closely at Your collection and it appears to me that they either actually wear the jellabah or carry it rolled over the shoulder. Or are these blanket rolls? because none of the jellabah wearers has a roll
-

Thank You!

On the regulares I have painted the 'over shoulder roll' to be the rolled up coat, either the same green or two-tone brown as the ones wearing the coats.
For the Milicianos, I have painted some as blankets and some as rolled coats.
-
Yes, I saw that, and You did a great job.
But I wanted to know how the miniature is sculpted. I haven't seen one roll on a miniature with Jellabah. Is this correct?
-

I can confirm that none of the Moroccans wearing a coat are also wearing a roll.
-
I can confirm that none of the Moroccans wearing a coat are also wearing a roll.
so maybe it was intended the way You did them... Ingenious idea anyway.
Have You thought of supplementing them with Northstar and Force of Arms?
Interestingly, the latter have all shirts only and the former all wear jellabah
-
I did look at the Northstar ones, as far as I know the Force of Arms ones are no longer available. However, as we are playing Chain of Command I have all the Moroccans that I am going to need.
Just a few more Republican Militia to paint too, I'll have to decide what faction I want to make a start on next.....
-
scrivs said

Correct, the Figure range was sold to Burns Miniatures.
They will be released soon via Rif Raf miniatures.
I am building a Civil Guard Platoon, one section is FOA and the other is Empress miniatures,
plus I am converting HMG team into Civil Guard HMG.
but it will be a week before I get the rest of my Civil Guard from Empress miniatures.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=64286.0
But the first platoon is the 5th Regiment for the Republican's for chain of command .
At the minute I am painting my 1940 Italians(Warlord) for a display game to fight the French for chain of command.
I have ordered Atlas ilustrado de la Guardia Civil (Paperback).
plus I have Uniformes militares en la Guerra Civil Española 1997 which has English information for the colour uniforms drawings, about 100 pages.
Which I ordered direct from spain £40.

As Grand Manner did not reply to my enquiry about pre-orders for Salute I have decided to make some buildings of my own. I finished the first one yesterday.

-
Good to see the Unions supporting the concept of Value Added Tax (far right on the wall) ... ;)
I take it we're choosing secondary support options in secret? "Ohh will he/won't he bring a tank etc and should i take Molotovs just in case"?

Following on from my earlier effort, this weekend I've put the finishing touches to another building for the ongoing SCW project.

Too bad I have never encountered minis like that! :-[
Lovely brushwork on the new additions to your forces, and the building is very good.

Too bad I have never encountered minis like that! :-[
Same here, my Empress SCW minis must have been pre-paint themselves material... I'm feeling somewhat ashamed to be honest.
A great looking collection though and look forwards to seeing more. :)
-
...great work Scrivs. They are som elf the best paint jobs on the Milicianos I have seen...can;t wait to see how these boys fair... ;D
Looks like the Legion and/or Regulares are up against new defences, a Bilbao and some Dinamiteros......the defences of Madrid are building as the fascist march continues!!
...I have a feeling that even though La Legion are tough as nails, if those Dinamiteros get close enough they won't like it too much at all...deploy them of a jump off point and hurl their dynamite!!
Sweet :o
Happy W

Thanks chaps.
James and I have another campaign game tonight pitting my Regulares against his Anarchist Militia. As we will be fighting in a small town, I thought I had better knock up another building.
This time a humble single storey dwelling with walled garden.

What's that now, 6 x buildings and 6' of barricades between us.
My poor Milicianos may just about have an outside chance of holding the line ... ;)
-
I have put the long weekend to some good use and have been continuing to slap some paint on the figures I picked up at Salute.
I have finished a 75mm gun, a pair of Dinamiteros, a P.O.U.M. standard bearer (as an alternate to my current U.G.T one), five more Milicianos and a team of Civil Guard.

...another cracking addition. You are building up a nice 'same build' group of house that's adding nicely to your campaign and presentation.
Hopefully Durutti can hold out!

Durutti is on the Retreat this scenario. We just need to get to the River and regroup ...
The Nationalists are due a severe beating :D
-
Good Luck! We're counting on you. All those Morrocans coming over here and nicking our jobs in the Army.... its time some took a stand. Vote Miliciano. Viva Durutti!! lol lol lol
-
That's really great addition to the already excellent collection of buildings.
Will be interesting to read the AAR and see who will get to have few cervezas after the fight in that tavern.

I would but the man just won't fight me [on my terms] lol. He keeps tippy-toeing round the flanks and out manoevuring me, leaving the defences untenable.
This time the scenario involves a short table edge ;)
-
Thanks chaps.
Over the weekend I finished six Empress Falangistas and did another six from start to finish. Not bad going as I had not planned this.
Another session like that and I'll have enough to be able to launch them against the Republicans.

Very nice work athough im starting to wonder about your attraction to the dark side. You have Legion too, no? :)
I should be fine for the final campaign game Thurs
-
if I may ask - have You thought about using the Empress cavalry and if so, as what unit type?
-
your attraction to the dark side. You have Legion too, no? :)
Indeed, the bad guys always have the best uniforms.
have You thought about using the Empress cavalry and if so, as what unit type?
No cavalry yet, but it could happen.
While finishing off the Falangista I also painted up an Empress Miniatures Tiznao armoured truck.

I have a game booked with James soon, so I hope to use it in action on Thursday .
What with the smorgasbord of soccer, my evening painting sessions have fallen by the wayside. However, as it is the weekend I have managed to paint a commander for the BA-6 I painted a few weeks ago and a Nationalist PaK36 anti-tank gun.

Excellent stuff mate!! :)
Thank you.
Currently writing the battle report, but it is difficult through all the tears. :'(

And now Paul knows what its like to use Green Militia troops. Real militiamen have Command Dice 4 though ;)
Falange and Moros v British Battalion. I shouldn't laugh really but its been a long time coming this one (chuckle ...)
-
Ok, it's posted. Enjoy your fifteen minutes of crowing :)

I have looked at your posts for awhile.
Lots of new stuff.
Excellent all the way around.
Love the gun and crew.

Nice AAR ;)

Due to jet-lag I have been waking up very early. So, I have put that time to good use painting up both Republican and Nationalist support options ready for my game at Partizan in a couple of weeks,
The Republicans got a T-26:

Lovely new additions to both forces 8)

...top stuff Scrivs.
What's the game at Partizan based around?
Cheers
Happy W
-
Thanks chaps.
What's the game at Partizan based around?
It will be a couple of attacks on a position held by Republican Militia. The first attack to go in will be the Falange - so that is bound to be a disaster, the second game will pit the Moroccans against the same defence so is bound to get a result.
-
A bad eBay deal means I don't get what I ordered, but they get painted anyway!
This week I was hoping to be painting some Spanish Foreign Legion, but ended up painting Falange instead.

now just have to find some figures to convert into a flamethrower team
-
Lovely stuff. But a flame-thrower, cripes!
I've just done the base-coats on eight Legion today, club tomorrow night but hopefully will do the highlights on Wednesday.
-
Flamethrower is on the support list for the Legion, in C of C.
I'm trying to put together everything on the relevant support lists, so players can choose them if they want, I like the challenge of converting figures, and this gives me the chance to do some hacking about.
-
I have quite a few Popular Militia done, but having already painted Moroccan Regulares, Guardia Civil and Falange people will be suspicious of my allegiance when they see that I have now started on a platoon of La Legion for our Spanish Civil War games.

Top work again mate
Wish I could paint as quickly as you do, spent a couple of hours this afternoon, painting 5 faces, and converting some figures into a moving 50mm mortar team ( need two of the beggars for The Tercio) I have two painting and modelling speeds, dead slow, and stop :'(

I know that problem with painting :(
My 5th regiment is 75% done, but life gets in the way.
My tanks and armoured cars are 60% done, but still trying to work out the weathering with mig's.
any good site ? on U Tube?
I will get there and then I have to find my camera ????? :-[
But once complete, I have to find someone to play in the Glasgow club on Sundays .
I did note some playing CoC WW2 at the last Sunday meeting.

You fascist ... ;)

.....beautiful colour mix Scrivs...you really nailed those...bloody lovely. ;)
The Legion are extremely useful in that they can be the tough-nuts of 1936 or be toned down from 1937 onwards, all using the same figures...and they look great in those riding breeches.

scrivs - loving your project, inspired by it even :D I've been doing CoC battles in Italy 1943-4 period. But I love the look of the Empress SCW range...
Just looking at the Espana army lists some of those 'platoons' look very big - anything up to 60 figs without even adding troops from the support lists. Have you had many games with CoC? how do these really large platoons, which I assume are usually the low grade miliciano type units, fare against the smaller ones of more professional troops? I assume there's a balance built into this...
EC
-
I'm partly responsible for 'España' so I'll try to answer your queries. :)
The platoons do look very big on the face of it, but there are only two sections in regular platoons (of all types), which is often missed. In effect then two sections of 18 and the small HQ, is pretty much in the same ball park as a typical three squad WWII platoon and of course the three squad organisation of the CTV.
The early militia were a problem as they tended to operate in 'squads' of ten or twenty, with their 'platoons' as a hundred or so men. We opted for a 'half centuria' as an un-historical compromise, as we imagined few players would really want to buy 100+ figures as the entry point for a militia force.
From experience and feedback, the Early Militia can have a very tough time of things, even with the copious support they usually gain from facing troops like the Legion... but then in reality they did struggle against such opponents. The playing field becomes more level as the war progresses however. Other pairings of opposing forces tend to be perceived as far more 'fair'.
Beware of the SCW though, once it gets its claws in you it's hard to break free. ;)
-
Arlequin,
many thanks for that informative and very swift response. The Espana supplement is very well produced - so congratulations for your part in in :-* I think you are exactly right about players not wanting a 100+ figure 'entry point'. I've got 4 forces for WW2 CoC and I reckon that 60-65 is quite normal once you've added a decent variety of support types to a basic platoon of 30-40. If it was going to be 120 in total, I'd find it easier to pass up on. I think also when you're in the 100+ figure per side zone you might want a larger playing area too!
I have come across the two squad platoon in my reading before - I think it was quite a normal arrangement in the Italian army of the 1930s and 1940s. I think I shall read up some more on the SCW.
Yes, the draw of the Spanish theatre is strong - in the late 70s / early 80s I used to play 20mm SCW with the late Robin Hunt, who was one of those who did much to educate people about the period. ...and those Empress castings are gorgeous ...and my 'Italian' WW2 buildings are actually the Grand Manner Spanish ones ...NOOOOO :o
EC
-
I did warn you... ;)
Thanks for the kind words, it was very much a labour of love for both of us too. I keep promising to do a revision; nothing major, just some fine detail. It does look like a big hill to climb from the foot of it though.
:)
Spanish tactics were somewhat different to WWII, the platoon advanced on a frontage of 100-150 metres, but closed up to 50 for the assault, so technically there should be more than enough room on a typical table. Militia tended to bunch up somewhat more, so even those out there with enough figures for a full centuria could still fit them on if they had a mind to.
The Italians are an odd bunch though, they went into Spain and Abyssinia with three squads platoons, when the rest of the World was using two or four, then changed to two (or four depending on your sources) when everyone else had pretty much gone to three. I suppose they dared to be different.
;)
It is certainly a different game to WWII and while I am biased, I much prefer it.
-
scrivs - loving your project, inspired by it even :D
Thank you
how do these really large platoons, which I assume are usually the low grade miliciano type units, fare against the smaller ones of more professional troops? I assume there's a balance built into this...
I think we have used an 80 before! As per history they tend to get the shiney shot out of them, just take longer to die. As they have few command dice you cannot add too many more units and tend to end up with huge sections. Shock soon mounts on them and it is a bugger to get it shifted.

scrivs,
yes I figured it might be rather had to activate such big units, with that number of leaders and command dice. But I guess that and the low grade troops going to ground with shock just shows the rule system working historically...
