Laser works have just released a 28mm Dhow. Looks great and seems quite affordable!
http://www.laserdreamworks.com/28mm-egyptian-dhow/
Perfect ship to escape from mercenary Mosquito pilots in, so long as it doesn't burn up first, leaving you adrift on the Red Sea! ;)
-
That's a great boat!
I'm glad to see them moving in a Pulpish direction and will have to get that boat ASAP.
Lets keep this thread going.
What other Pulp Sea Craft are available?
-
MBA made this boat...
They also make a handful of other small boats and a BIG Colonial Riverboat.
-
Minimi have a decent range:
http://www.minimi.co.uk/products.aspx?page=products&subpage=ships
As does Ainsty:
http://ainstycastings.co.uk/index.php/cPath/48/osCsid/fd0333406530ec45082c5e659d92219c
PMC, now run by Caliver, used to have a nice range of Sudanese steam boats, dhows, etc.
-
I agree. there should be a page for Pulp Boats.
And there are lots to choose from at Grand Manner. (I should note that I was one of the sculptors on this range).

Excellent resource thread. Thanks to everyone who contributes

In addition to the one mentioned by phipps, Miniature Building Authority also make their Colonial Riverboat (18" long/item #10625). Brigade Games makes a Steam Launch (BG-S002), and two U-Boats (BG-S001 and BG-S003). John Jenkins Designs at one time made a couple of nice boats, one a steam launch and the other a side-wheeler. I don't know if the Jenkins' boats are still available. All the boats I mentioned are for 25mm/28mm.

The Old Glory Shiyard] (http://www.oldglory25s.com/index.php?cat_id=74&catname=%27Colonial%20and%20Sudan%27)(formerly Merrimac Shipyard) has some nice ships suitable for the Pulp Era.
This Tramp Steamer is quite impressive from what I remember from a long-ago Histroricon..
-
Reviresco (http://www.tin-soldier.com/ships.html) make some splendid card models as well.

Great List!
Brigade games does a swell Africa Queen as well as two nice Uboats.
I have the Queen and will post pics tonight.

The catalog page says 'multimedia' but you can download the ship so I would think it is a card model.

Brigade Steam Launch mentioned above;
Lady Wigglesome hired the tall stranger because he was the only one who would brave the River of Doom. His gruff manner bothered her, but something deep inside her told her she could trust him. She just had to find Jane. How could her best friend from boarding school have been so foolish to venture inland.
He stood warily in the bow of the launch. All his senses told him something was amiss.
The Jungle Girl lept into the boat, ready to strike but something stirred in her memory.
This is the resin steam launch from Brigade games. A nice kit I put together stock, except for replacing the canopy poles with brass tubing and adding a pipe to the boiler. The females are by Foundry I believe, while the Hunter is the excellent RLBPS Allan Quartermain figure.
I didn't attach the canopy, so I could have access to the interior.

Now to go T-Rex hunting!
Enjoy.

Also, I saw these print and build PDFs Sampans by Mayhem in Paper on RPGnow;

I don't have these but they look promising.
Keepm coming!
-
The thought occurs that you could buy those paper/PDF sampans and print them out as cutting guides for plastic sheet or something more durable than cardboard.
Mind you, printed card scenery can be surprisingly tough. I have a few pieces that have stood up to years of use!

Yes you can, infact my eldest daughter and I are in the middle of converting/making 4 of the Riveresco boats including the Fishing Trawler in the pictures that Bob posted. We shall add some pictures when the are finished.

Yes that second picture of vessels from Revireso is a paper model- with some metal components as well. John makes very nice card models, and they assemble very nicely. The biggest thing to remember is to take your time and let the glue dry!

I was thinking about doing that for the tramp steamer when the time comes for me to get one!

I bought this tugboat for a few euros at a flea market last Sunday.
(miniature for size)
I am thinking about removing the cabin and making a 28mm-compatible small cabin. However it seems that mini-tugboats were not often seen before the 1960s? Any thoughts for Pulp / RCW period etc?
-
Nice find.
Instead of a mini tug why not a steam launch?
Add some controls and seats or decking and you have a nice little boat to run around Pulp Harbor in. Just the thing for bringing the run ashore or slipping out to your waiting Uboat.

I remember that one from my childhood days. With the cabin attached to the deck it was useable for the little toys soldiers from like Airfix and with the cabin removed it was suitable for larger figure for example my rather un-succesfull band of sharkhunters. They all fell victim to a ferocious great white until i build a bigger boat.
However, to stay on topic i genuinely feel that the pulp section should have a dedicated maritime sub section although other sections could also do with some more maritime input. Some time ago i was ostracized on a Dutch forum for suggesting just that. I will follow this with great interest.
-
Thanks Amalric, I was doing image searches for "tugboat" but I had not thought of "launch boat".
Yes Legion1963 it appears to be an old Lehmann toy.
About topic. That's an idea. In fact the subject is quite similar to those in the "Railway Wargaming" section: mostly about 28mm-sized, and late 19th / first half of 20th century. Larger boats and warships fit in the forum section of their historical period, but there could be a topic or section for 28mm boats that can appear in a harbour or on a river for Colonial/Pulp/Back of Beyond/SCW/VBCW etc?

Hobby Lobby has a trawler that could be converted, but it's a bear to cut to waterline. :(

Hello all
Depending on the subject inside pulp, here is a boat i find usefull.
Revell ref-H387:100 Sport Fishing Boat.
It can be converted to some variations or leave as it is.
This is mine in progress.
Miniature is Artizan Thrilling Tales for size comparison.
Cheers
Rui
-
rumacara,
I like the look of that fishing boat, trawling eBay now (pun intended)!
I have this boat but have done nothing with it yet. I think it will need some work.
-
Hello all
That is also a nice boat.
With a little imagination we can d a lot of variations with that one.
A secret base patrol boat for example. :D
That´s i the pipeline to buy.
Cheers

-
Hello all
former user, this kit was reedicted by Revell with a box saying 50 years of revell and it costed me 28 euros two years ago.
I dont know if its still available or not.
If you contact revell they can advise you where to buy and is availability.
Cheers

I've searched for it online
it was available for 10€ in 2006

but today
http://www.amazon.de/Revell-50-Jahre-Jubil%C3%A4umsartikel-Fishing/dp/B000FCOK5Y
however, I've seen it appear on ebay occasionally for 20-30 $ but in the US only....

MBA made this boat...
They also make a handful of other small boats and a BIG Colonial Riverboat.
Do you have a link to their site Dave? ???
UPDATE: It's ok I found it. ;)

On The front page of TMP today is an advert by MBA listing items they have on sale at the moment, including their colonial river boat.

Hi, this is my first post.
Here's my scratchbuilt Steamboat based of Gary Chalk's model (an old plan edited in Wargames Illustrated).
It's just a little bit longer than the original plan.

LOVE the tugboat Hammers!! I NEVER "tyre" of seeing your brilliant boats!!
I am staggered by your scratchbuilding skills, completely absent in my work.
Conversions I can only just barely manage to struggle through, but to start from NUTHIN', & fabricate from whole cloth, I'm mesmerized, completely awestruck, & not a little envious.
All I care about is the HULL.
How long would she be in "real" 28mm life? The cut of her bow, has she enough beam, a pleasing stern,
what manner of vessel does she want to become?
I use hulls where I find 'em, cut to waterline, discard the outa scale bits, then build back up to, now, 28mm "scale", 1/48-1/52-1/54ish seems to work best to my eye. Nowhere near your results though...
As we move towards summer now is time to keep an open for cheap children's toys for the next project:

WOW :o
What a great build!
I am going to have to build one of these soon!
Hammers,
I had been wondering about that launch, thank you for the pics confirming its gaming usability.
That tug is nice, why not waterline it for gaming though?
Great barge! One of those is on my to build short list as it looks so useful for so many games.
Valerik, Yes tis the season to hunt for water toys! ;)
-
Hammers, that is a fantastic collection of aquatic delights. I love the river steamer.
May I draw everybody's attention to Amalric's junk? A perfectly innocent statement where I live but it could be misconstrued elsewhere I believe!
This is a superb junk.....

My earlier posting on this subject listed some boats made by game-related manufacturers (MBA, John Jenkins Designs, and Brigade Games). By the way, the John Jenkins Designs boats are still listed as available. Given that the postings have moved into the area of modified and scratchbuilt vessels, I thought I’d add a few that I’ve put together. The tramp steamer and Yangtze gunboat are both built around Playmobil hulls that have been significantly modified. The decks and cabin areas are made from Evergreen plastic. The tug is a Lindberg model. The hull had to be cut to waterline but it was a great length and width for 28s. The only problem area was that the cabins lacked the appropriate height for 28mm figures so I raised the cabins with pieces of Evergreen plastic. You can see the horizontal bands at the base of the cabins. The motorboats, which remind me of the ones in Last Crusade, are toys I picked up at the swap meet and cut to waterline. They were originally marketed by Chevron Oil Co. All of these ships and boats have been seated on a base of Milliput to hide any uneven cuts made when cutting them waterline and to add additional strength to the hulls that have undergone significant modification.

To make Doreen even more disgustingly awesome, he carved the life boat out of a tree branch he found.
I remember... :D
Last step: The life boat.
It took me a little to get the idea how to make it, but I finally got it. I think the pictures speak for themselves. I did it from five to nine today:

A little painting to do and the work will be done.

Aarrgh if I tried that I would probably end with lifeboat-shaped wounded fingers and nothing else :'(
-
Those are some seriously good boats, War In 15MM. I love that Yangtze gunboat in particular. Great work!
-
I say, jolly good! :)

Thank you. Broken-toy finds from my local swap meet have served me well. Richard

Gotcha. Took a while. First one I've seen on OZ EBay.

Listed with a Buy it now, or make an offer. With seven watchers I thought better do it. So for the price of a meal and a bottle of red, I decided to go fishing. ;)

Hello all
Professor Dinglebat and all. Like i said previouslly try to find it directly from Revell before you shop elsewhere.
That boat (SPORT FISHING BOAT) was released some 3 years back by Revell as well as some other kits comemorating the 60 or so aniversary from Revell.
I used to work on a modelling shop and i sold a lot so its worth try it. ;)
Cheers

I got the fishing boat at that time. Was fairly cheap then. Unfortunately, like a lot of things, it's waiting for me to get the time/enthusiasm to finish it. :(

> nick - i think there's a gary chalk template floating around somewhere and even though it's for a pirate ship, it should work out well for the hull shape.

I scratchbuilt this in 15mm for a gamer friend about 4 years ago - and he still hasn't run a game with it. :?
It was meant for colonials, but wouldn't look amiss in a pulp game.

Does anyone know how this model stand next to a 28mm model.
With a LOA of almost 40 cm it seems like at least the hull could be useful for a conversion.

yes, that one looks pretty cool

Scale is 1:142, so for 1:56 (28mm), it would be 67% or so too small

So inspired by this thread, I had to build a tramp too...

Nice! I'd like to have one about that size.

Thats great looking model, you can make deck guns for nothing.so can use it as a gun boat as well for only an hours work.

I took my Dad to Watchet Harbour over Christmas as he was stationed at RAF Watchet just after the war. Then I took him to the pub where he used to drink and play darts in 1948 when he was off duty. We had lunch in there, the first time he'd been back in 66 years! Anyway, the point of this is, I saw this boat in the harbour at Watchet and I thought it would be rather nice to make a model of it. It looks like the basis of a really good Pulp boat. What do you think?

I saw this boat in the harbour at Watchet and I thought it would be rather nice to make a model of it. It looks like the basis of a really good Pulp boat. What do you think?
Perfect, I´d say. I´m not a very nautic person and couldn´t tell its date of make, but it looks like it could have been powered by a steam engine once. Now that chimney looks like a diesel stack though...
-
Ideal,Very simple to build.Plenty of flat area's which figures can be stood on without major remodelling of the superstructure.
It wouldn't look out of place any where.
Its well worth the effort.(I wish I'd seen it before I built mine)
Mark.
-
Yeah, that looks quite usable.
-
She's elegant, very suitable for Pulp games. The deck-houses could have lift-off roofs.
-
It would make a great boat for pulp.
Hope someone tries to make one like it.
-
It somehow reminded me of this one:

Quite right, it has been converted to diesel.
Small veteran ferry
Right again, it was once a ferry boat on the Thames, now it's been converted to a house-boat although still sea-going. Yours for £175,000 if you fancy it?

Made this one out of paper, modeled after a 1960s Chris Craft. Searching for blueprint images usually turns up some interesting results.

Something of an origami table you've got there! Love the Bond aesthetic :D

Fram, you'll never here me object to an origami based project. There are some great concept's mocking me on this table, and quite frankly I'm going to nick them. lol
I'm fan of this kind of thinking and the effort involved is worth noting.

Good job,Sir! lol

Hi, Received my 2 Playmobil cargos today. Waiting for a 3rd. I'll try to customize them as it was done by Michi (sort of). Gotta find out how to post pics here though.
-
Use Photobucket or something similar and then paste the URL of the photo in your post here. Then you can show us your progress with the Playmobil boats.
-
Actually decided to post pics on my blog.
Right now, this is the current status. Given I'm lacking material (such as plastic sheets) I won't go very far at this stage.

Jack,
My apologies, but I'm going to have to report you to PETG and DPTG. (People for the Ethical Treatment of Grass and Don't Paint The Grass) And do steer clear of the vegans for a bit until they calm down.
Nice boat otherwise. >:D
-
Lol indeed, it's my bad grass spot in the garden :D Promised, next time, I'll put some cardboard background ;-)
PS : I found on a blog some nice maritime accessories sold on ebay. I'll order some I guess, they me be of interest to crafters here if you don't already know about it :

I have had the Playmobil ship for some years now, haven't done anything to it though. Will keenly follow your progress with your ships and shamelessly steal any ideas for my ship then :)
-
Started working on my Cargo. Slowly. I'm making a 1st one as I managed to grab 3. I won't follow Michi on assembling 2 in 1 for now, so just using a single one and converting it into a cargo to train my crafting. One of my upcoming pulp rpg campaign players will be playing a smuggler, so I will attribute him this boat and crew (from pulp figures). Using polystyren, cardboard and coffee wooden "mixers" to make a wooden floor.
Still a lot of work to do… Especially as I don't know yet how it will look like in the end.

Reviresco has a nice Imperial Chinese Junk: http://wargameterrain.blogspot.be/2015/05/reviresco-new-imperial-chinese-war-junk.html (http://wargameterrain.blogspot.be/2015/05/reviresco-new-imperial-chinese-war-junk.html)

Thanks. Anything more civilian ?
-
Ahoy there, me shiverin' mateys, heave-ho!!!
could the chinese junk not be civilised? I'm not an expert concerning far-eastern ship-building, but it feels like something you can get away with.
Anyway, here I am again advocating the good old scratch build. I remember a plan for a nice pulpy tramp released a while ago by ModelBoats Magazine (which is mainly about Radio control models). They often add free beginners' plans and instructions to issues, so it's worth keeping an eye out. I share this one here because ist hull is constructed quite simple and can be waterlined easily by just subtracting an Inch or so from the bottom of the hull.
http://www.myhobbystore.co.uk/product/40051/mm2057-ss-noggsund-plan-by-glynn-guest
this one too Looks sufficiently pulpy to be of interest here:

And here is my take on a little freighter:
She's named Kauru, after a New Zealand river. The real thing was called Gowerian, an english coaster built in 1921. There are still lots of details missing, she'll need some aging around the hull, for instance. As you all see she can be easily waterlined as long as the tabletop is wet enough.
I'm also thinking about crewing her with some nice 28mm minis (any suggestions, I'm a total newby to wargaming).
Cheers
Peter

WOah really nice !
-
Should I ever build a Steamer, there's a great paper model by I-forget-who (my favourite publisher lol ::) ), that I figure I will try to build in plasticard and cardboard instead of paper.
-
That freighter is magnificent. If you want to scratch-build a junk you can do no better than Amalric's thread here. I haven't copied this yet but I keep meaning to.

More than 6 months later, I am almost done with my cargo. I used a TTCombat cargo half for the upper cabin part.

Still some stuff to do but it's coming along.

This is really starting to look the business.
Thanks for the post I hadn't seen the thread before some amazing work on here :) :)

Looking groovey!

As I have insinuated recently, I've been up to something as well. She's a more like a Victorian era passenger steamer, but would feel at home in the 1930s as well, like the aging, decommissioned liner that is chartered by a pulp adventurer-party.
She's inspired by turn-of-the-centuries tin-toys which i saw in a museum, the proportions a compromise between larger scale details and smaller scale ship, like I metioned in a thread about scale in the "workbench" section. 28mm figures should fit and i am sure I can find some seamen, ladies, gentlemen and adventurers I can disarm and let walk the decks.

The other end
I hope it's not too far off-topic, after all, she's an RC model populated with 28mm minis, not a gaming model.

Long time no sea...
where are all the shipmates?
Meanwhile, on this fair side of the world:
I tried my hand in weathering. Rust in acrylics, wooden bumper strips are dyed in grey, painted in clear varnish, then in black, then chipped away with sand paper and scalpel. Hull No.2 (passenger liner Countess of Lovelace) can be seen taking shape in the background.
The lettering was done with a nib-pen. a bit lop-sided, but I've seen worse paint jobs on real ships (I know that's a lame excuse).
Time that I check where I saw these nice 28mm pulp sailors.
-
Oh wow. :o :o :o Well worth the wait! :-* She is a real beauty.
-
Wow... That's a real beauty. How did I miss this?
I like your conservative use of weathering. I (and I am not alone) tend to overdo it.
I have an old Billing Boats freight ship (kit from the 60s) which I plan to make into a waterline model for gaming. It uses mahogany strips for the hull. What did you use for the hull?
-
Now THAT is a Tramp freighter.
You going to waterline it? If not, what's your plan for gameplay?
-
Thanks for the flowers...
sorry, I'll have to disappoint you. I'm not doing any wargaming, I'm just lurking around here for inspiration because i like the way you build models from scratch (or not even that), paint (& weather) stuff and value creativity more than extreme scale-realism. On the other hand, I'd like to show off some of my work that lives in the space where wargaming and scale-modelling overlap.
So the gameplay for this sort of model is to take it to a beautiful lake, let it sail its rounds, relax and enjoy the scenery.
The construction is classic plank on frame made from plywood. 4mm for the frames, the tricky bits around the bow and stern are filled with balsa-blocks and sanded to shape. Planking is in 2mm ply. Since the midship-section is rather box-shaped, the planks there are wide (about 50-70mm) and stand over the top of the frames to form the bulwarks. where they approach the complicated curves of bow and stern, they are cut to strips of about 8-10mm.
A baby-photo: frames are attached to chip-board to hold them together before the planks do, and the bow and stern blocks are not shaped yet (I misused my car as a workbench to be able to make this mess in the garden). The slots in the sides show the deck levels, where the frames are later cut off.
From the inside you still see the broad planks in front of the motor, the strips around the curves and the stern block, which has been hollowed out to make room for the rudder mechanism.
@Hammers: which Billings kit is it?
-
@Hammers: which Billings kit is it?
I can't really tell, but it must be a very early one, perhaps one of the first, sie it has no release nr on it. I am guessing it is from the 50s or earl 60s. It was 1/4 completed when I found it in a vintage shop. Very Tintin, the whole experience.
-
Interesting. Can you post some pictures? Of course only if it's sufficiently pulpy to fit this thread. Have you found any treasure maps or other leads for the true Tintinny experience?
-
Beautiful build PortCharmers!!....I
love the shot of the S.S Kauru cruising the lake!.....Just watch out for the natives in their war skiffs!! ;)
Cheers,

-
Very impressive modelling. You are, of course, welcome to simply display your models. Modelling and painting has always been a big part of the LAF.
-
Excellent work! :-*
-
I absolutely adore handcrafted models that have form and function. I think there's something quite sad about fully hulled ships in display cases(a bit of hypocrite since museum displays are bread and butter.)oddly enough sailing ships look right. ::)
I absolutely agree its the right place to show scale builds. It provides inspiration ,and If nothing else it can point gamers to new sources of bits to kit bash.
I don't have the spare time to build such things for myself.More to the point there's no Mrs TSG would let me spend hours and hours of what little spare time we have building one.
I can normally justify an hour here or there.( thank the gods for the Soaps!)
So I cane out quite bits like these (just cereal packet nonsense that's disappeared with photo rot and thread age.) that can be hidden in the workshop or given to number three son for his pulp games.Plus an airboat that fits the pulp bill.
-
Oh this is a great thread! I will be following this, I have a few ships I would like to post here have to wait till there finished.
-
Cereal packet nonsense? I hope you don't seriously put your work down. These are awesome. And that's exactly what I meant:making something on a negligible budget using hardly any prefabricated parts.
-
I thoroughly agree that full-hulled ship models floating in space are a shame...make mine a waterline model!

Do you mean a Sticky thread? I don't think a Pulp Boat child board is warranted. Happy to make a Pulp Boat Sticky though.
