Title: A package arrived yesterday and I am confused about why...
Post by: Conquistador on March 17, 2014, 01:27:30 AM
I received a package from a Harrogate address (keeping that address offline for the sake of someone's privacy) in the UK correctly addressed to me but...    ???

I don't recognize the item, I don't remember ordering anything like it, and a google search on the address doesn't give me anything distinctive to clue me in.  I have racked my brain for 24 hours (+/-) trying to determine why it came to me.   o_o

I am concerned because:

1) Do I have something meant for someone else?  Are they wondering, "Why don't I have it?" Are they thinking bad thoughts about a seller who may simply have made an honest blunder?

2) Alzheimer's run on the paternal side of the family and dementia on the maternal side (and now I am just a bit [more than normal] paranoid.)

3) I do have those normal "senior moments" many of us of a certain age can suffer on some days - my wife seems to think it is selective but I assure her it is not, especially not intentionally...  if I ordered it it, what project was it meant for??

Awesome as the item is I don't want to keep it if it belongs to someone else, because while it may be legal by USPS regulations ('unsolicited gift') as a friend pointed out it would certainly be unethical and immoral to not try and clarify why I have this item and, IMO,  that regulation was almost certainly not meant to address this situation.  And if I should know why I have this it will reassure me to know I 'just forgot' it was coming.

If you are the sender would you please PM me or e-mail me at ZorroGames@att.net?  I would be embarrassed if I ordered this and forgot but it beats worrying if this belongs to someone else who paid for it...

Gracias,

Glenn

Did you get involved with one of the swapping programs some of the site have you get something and then you send someone something?

Do you mind sharing what the item was?

It's not a very late secret Santa or something is it?

Not sure I understand swapping programs but, no, I am trying to get rid of miniatures outside my core interests.  That would almost certainly increase my "awesome figures I am never going to use" list.   :)

I would rather not share - other than it i SF oriented - at this time just incase it was supposed to be for someone's birthday or some other surprise.  I would do that if necessary.

LOL, don't do Secret Santa (or as at my Wife's Jewish employers firm - Secret Snowflake.)

But that would be a fun gift for another war gamer.

Checked PMs earlier and nothing there.

There is an address (no company or personal name which means it would need to be addressed to "Resident" at that address in the UK [I am in USA.])

Someone (or some company, in theory,) paid good money to send this to me.  I just wish I knew who/why...

Perhaps if you disclose what the item is, as long as it's not a conical rubber shaped item lol, and that may help jog the sender's mind...if they're a LAF'er.  I saw your concern about a recipient seeing it, but I really dont think that's a significant fear since the recipient would have to know both the sender, you and the 'gift' meant for them.  But f you'd rather not say, that's fine too.  I imagine someone would rather receive a spoiled surprise than no surprise at all...

Since it came via Royal Mail I started with LAF (not sure I want to try TMP and poke John the OFM with a stick) and if no one responds (it is a SF item) soon I will state what it is (maybe even picture) and risk ruining what may be a surprise gift for someone else.  Because it might be a gift intended for a third party I did not mention specifically what it was other than SF.

It is quite nice and I really would have a use for it now that I see it but it isn't really anything in my core interests. *

Quite possibly.

Probably that Presbyterian/Puritan thing about not keeping what might be somebody's property.

Honestly, if, after an honest effort to find out if it is an item intended for someone else, I guess I could consider it "abandoned" and dispose it myself.

Might need to drop by the USPS with a  letter for the UK.

I don't know any companies I might have ordered from that are based in that part of the UK...

Edit:  I assume that "Harrogate" is a municipal type geographic feature?

Glenn

Might end up that way.

It is a cool item but not something I was seriously expanding (or even keeping) in my downsizing effort.  Make that a Very Cool item.

Time to write a letter to an address in the UK, I guess...

Harrogate is a Town mate. Do you have the town and postcode? (Zip) you'll get the general addres from a Google search. Some codes are even house specific.

If its a business you can then google them. To be honest with an address you may even be able to find a tel number. Let me know if you need a hand from this side of the pond but am at work til tomorrow now.

What kind of business wouldn't include any kind of company name, stamp, sticker or invoice in their shipments, especially in international orders? My random guess would be something like an eBay power seller sending out multiple items and mixing them up during packaging. (Obviously doesn't have to be eBay in particular.) Just a guess, though...

Nice connundrum...

Just last year, I won an item on Ebay from a Japanese seller. And for some unexplained reason, Ebay and/or Paypal moved up an address in my addressbook to the top. But since I had not used that address for over 4 years (and then only once), and my own address had been the only one in there for quite some time, I only noticed when I had already paid for the item and got a track and trace message from the seller to this address! An address in the US, I might add...  ::)

I had at one time ordered something off Ebay for this guy, in trade for an item he sent me. I had even deleted the address about two years ago, along with some other addresses that had ended up in my Ebay list, but they all of a sudden returned, just like that!

In the end though, I managed to get hold of him and paid him to forward the package to me. Which still was decidedly cheaper than ordering the item again...

So maybe something like that happened here as well?

And why not check your Paypal account, bank and/or credit card statements for a payment you can't place? Maybe something matches up with the unexpected arrival?

Hate it when that happens,  somehow this has happened with my eBay account as well, with packages arriving at my old flat... luckily i could also still get them due to knowing the person who has moved in after me.  Weird though that that can happen.

I once gave the wrong adress to an ebay seller, I had just moved and used to live at no 75, now I live at no 78 on a different street and it was one of the first things I bought online since the move so it was sent to a house a couple of doors down from mine, they refused it and it was sent back to the seller, I found out through the tracking info, figured out my mistake and contacted the seller who sent it out again when he received the item back, this time to the right adress. wouldn't be so bad apart from the fact that I'm in the Netherlands and the seller was in Japan   ;D

As far as I know there isn't any wargames companies in Harrogate (I'm in knaresborough a couple of miles away) Wargames Command Post used to be in Scotton but he moved down south.
The post code Starts with an HG 1 or 2 is Harrogate I think.

Okay, forgive any violations of privacy but here is the address:

8 Cecil Street, Harrogate, HG14NP, UK.

If you think of who that might be (company or person, please PM or e-mail me (ZorroGames@att.net) and I will get in contact with them.  If I don't hear by Midnight tomorrow (19MAR14) then I will send off the "resident" letter to the UK and see what happens.  If nothing comes up to clarify this then I will start a thread on "how to creatively make a benefit of this item for someone else" thread.

If it turns out I actually somehow am the proper recipient of this then I will let people know.  Except maybe my wife... ICU nurses are trained to be paranoid even more than Intel types...

Thanks for all the good ideas.

CAUTION:As a friendly heads up...I'd remove your email address from the thread - or camouflage it.  Spam bots frequently peruse open internet spaces for any emails and will toss you on garbage spam lists.  It's good practice to avoid it when possible.

ZorroGames (at) att (dot) net

...is a better way to type it out if needed.

PS: Quite a riveting case.  My first guesses were:

1) you ordered something from a company and they shipped you the wrong thing
2) you got in on a kickstarter and this is a late product shipped to you?

Ergo, the REAL reason not to share details. Make them tell YOU what's in it.  ;)

Along with all the effort and just willing to give it up, you're reason 'not to spoil a surprise' continues to put you in a good light.

As for the Alzheimers, my mother recently passed from dementia-related issues, and my girlfriend of a quarter century, who always took care of this old hippy, has suffered rapid onset. I'm overwhelmed, and, of course, wonder if my own confusion and failed efforts indicate mere stress-reenforced depression, or a bit of the loss-of-self as well.

Still, I don't ask others to stop seeing the humor. Sometimes it's the only thing that gets you through.

Okay, so I have decided since I have opened it I can't use "Refused mail" to return it so I am going to ship it back to the address it was sent from and since it is residential housing I plan to address it to "Resident" at that address since I don't know a name.

If there is a better way speak up soonest and I will that that advice into consideration.

Try writing a letter to them first, rather than sending the parcel on. That it's cheaper and if it did land at your address by accident, it'll be cheaper and faster in the long run too as you'll be able to send it direct to the real recipient.

Update on this:

to paraphrase Doctor Fankenstein (Movie) - "It LIVES!"  Yes, threadomancy...  But I have resolution.

It was a "perk" from an (the only?) Indiegogo project I think I ever supported.   lol

I just received a survey from indiegogo and the link pops up with a series of pictures of the perks - and there is the (very minor, supported on a whim,) item I pledged and paid for on the list which I received in the maill all that time ago.   o_o

That was back in the time when I had disposable income...   ::)

No Good Deed ("Heck, they could use the support and it isn't that much money!") goes unpunished...   :D

Another reason to be very selective about KS and Indigogo - you can lose track over the months to takes to get your items of what you supported...  (I have another example but that is for another time/thread.)

Glenn

Only 95 points because it was Indiegogo instead of a Kick Starter.   :D

Receiving the request for survey and hitting the link to the webpage on Indiegogo to figure out what they were talking about was the moment of enlightenment (aka known as "OH, Shit, that!") for me.  I went to my painting desk, found the package, pulled out the item, looked at the screen again, and felt the warm red glow of my face...

I really don't need "the T-Shirt" but it  looks nice...  ::)   o_o   lol

We were discussing this in another thread - it's one of the reasons I actually enjoy Kickstarter projects.  I forgot about them, then get a box of goodies.  I don't back many though so I don't think I'd likely forget one.  lol

Note that both Indiegogo and kickstarter keep a list of everything you have backed. On Kickstarter you can even mark the campaigns as being received/completed/fulfilled or not so you have a reminder for these long winded fulfillments.

Yes, and I missed filling out a form during a family period of crisis and the miniatures are essentially gone - I have to wait until the web shop opens.  I suggested a refund but did not get an answer.  I hate to be rude...
