Chaps
thought i would let you know part of the release for
Salute 12.4.2014 on the Napoelonic front from www.gringo40s.com
these will be the French Guard Engineers in combat role for 1815!
doing what enginners do and did at the Bridge ar Charleoi in Belgium 1815...there will be figures for a marching battalion and a group in
action clearing a barricade ,and bringing up ammo..removing barrels etc
Obviously as there were only 125 men present the idea is they can be
used when they went to battalion strength prioer to the Cent Jours
campaign.these should fill a gap in the market.. and a favourite unit of mine.. regards Ged www,gringo40s.com
-
Nice figures, but the first thing that came to mind with the photo was:
"Don't cry, Jean, I can whittle a couple of new drumsticks from this twig"
I'll get my coat.....
-
thanks Joras! :D
more engineers!
-
The Napoleonic Wars, such a panoply of colours and styles.......
-
indeed Joras an unending pot of brilliantly dressed figures
;)
regards
Ged

They are definitly a must have in my collection.

Gonvalon

lets hope so former user!! cheers for that

although my basic napoleonic period awareness recalls this uniform and troop type I am not exactly sure what function they actually fulfilled. Were they supposed to build bridges? If so, wouldn't some versions with actual carpentry outfit and tools be a good addition? just a suggestion....
-
former user
actually they were really the "Fireman of the Guard" and were also used
as Crack combat troops reaching battalion strength in the late Napoleonic
wars their distinctive helmets placing them apart from other guard troops
the bridge builders at the Berezina were "real engineers"...saved by
the forsight of General Eble (spelling) who died of exhaustion in 1813.. :)
the engineers of the guard were used for digging trenche..and they set up
Napoelons tent when he made camp.........their was a sappeur contingent
to this unit as well with the famous lobster armour...regards

and a few other oddities.

wow, the wargaming world has come a long way since Liliane and Fred Funcken made their books :D
-
good postings........armoured figs will compliment my Engineers
:D
the Funkens were part of my inspiration.......a huge part!!

With no doubt Eble and his pontoneers did the main work at the bridges.
Their first battalion under Gauthier and the second battalion under Chapelle made on the 26th november little more then 400 men and two carriages
with tools. So they hired everyone for help with experience in engineerwork and doind wodden constructions.
They got help from the Engineers of the Guard under General Kirgener, as well as the Sappers of the guard and the Berg Sappers under Battalion Comander Blaux.
The Sailors of the Guard under Ganteaume where going for help too.
Finally the miners and the workmen detachments should be mentioned. They allone lost five officers at the Berezina.
So the engineers are well placed at the Berezina, but probably without helmets and less stylish uniformed. But that is the point where fact got sacrificed on the altar of fiction.
I want them their in all their beauty :-) So mine will probably come with shawls and helmets. :o ;)
-
I picked up my Funckens, in French back then, 45 years ago from a shop in the top of the Arche De Triomphe, Paris, after a visit to Les Invalides.
-
Moments in a miniatures enthusiasts life that will never be foregotten :-)
I got my first Napoleonic Funken Volumne after weeks of saving every Pfennig of my pocket-money from a smal bookshop in the Rhineland.
Thats 35 years now o_o :o
-
more great info............
where would we be without our Funkens....even now the info is pretty
good..especially the french
these images have stayed in my mind is seems forever..
cheers chaps

Even used one of the pictures for my O Level Art Exam!!!!
But, seriously, the plethora of small companies filing gaps in ranges is quite extraordinary. Wargamers have never had so much choice or variety.
-
these are really nice- is there any scope for using them in the peninsula war, or where they later period/not present in that theater
-
Engineers would have been there, but the Garde went with Napoleon and I don't think that he went to Spain. Still, this is only a game......... ;D
-
I understand the difference between guard and line would be basically the hat with engineers. Are there replacement heads planned? or bare heads for the hard work?
-
@ Rob_bresnen
Have a look for Geds new sailors of the guard.
They have had their darkest hour in spain.
-
former user
all of the above are planned as this unit was the "old guard" company
shakos were worn by the others....all permutations have been factored
in!!
its almost getting one to one for 1815!!

Joras yr right its a good time to be a wargamer...a golden age! :D

Thanks for pointing towards the westfalia lobsters! I have some of them in one of my many drawers, together they will Form a jolly fine Troop!
-
Westfalia have some nice bits, the wagons are made by the same guy who makes them for the Perrys. I bought some of their Prussian stuff to finish off my Perry army.
-
Beautiful figures, ovely paint job.
Well done Ged.

Very nice work in capturing a unique formation during the Napoleonic period.
Now we just need the fire tender to extinguish the fire.
Cheers,

Funcken says the company was charged with maintaining the water pumps at fontainebleau. Doesn't sound very heroic....

thanks Helen very much ;)

Thanks Ged, yes it does. I've the postal service wagon from Kawe designed by Niels which is a unique wagon in itself.
So much character in these sort of ancillary service vehicles that have a purpose during the Napoleonic period.
Cheers,
Helen

Loving in the character in these.

It's great that someone is doing figures like these, especially of such quality. Your Napoleonic releases are very welcome indeed. I put it you Ged, that your are the man to immortalise Eugene de Beauharnais and his generals in 28mm!
-
Elk101
thanks very much...........the Napoleonic period is actually my
all time favourite..the rest you can see in my Gringo40s releases
and i have drawn up a hit list of targets that appeal to me and
hopefully my customers...............
Eugene is of great interest............loyal and he fought
above his pat grade in many cases..great uniforms as well!!

For what it's worth I think you are hitting the mark with these. Rather oddly (perhaps) as a Napoleonic player I only have Italians and Russians so I keep looking to see how I can shoehorn new stuff like this in! I'm loving what your doing though, whether I can use them or not!
Eugene is of great interest............loyal and he fought

He is a great favourite of mine. One of Napoleon's relatives that could actually command. To my mind the Italians (particularly during the 1812 campaign, less so after that) are one of the most underrated armies of the period.
ps you just gave me a great idea.if i do it
you will get the credit!! :o
Now I'm intrigued!
Cheers, Steve
-
Steve
the idea you gave me will be thought over this weekend!!
as im trying not to go off on too many tangents.......
As for the Italiens they did well in the peninsular on and off
and aside from the pretty uniforms are fun to play as an army. :D
are you at Salute?

No Salute for me I'm afraid. It's a rather expensive affair just getting there (about £200) without any purchases so I can only afford to go to Salute or BLAM and BLAM is just too good to miss! One day maybe.
I have a feeling your stand will be popular!

Thanks Steve........maybe next year old chap!!
we can talk Italiens so to speak!!

Hi Ged. Yet another triumph for Gringos. Couldn't believe the photos when my copy of wargames, soldiers and strategy came through the post.
Brilliant figures and lovely painting. You've been teasing us with these for a while, and I can say that they're well worth the wait. See you at Salute and my the figures fly through th door.
