Last year I fortunately got to go and see HIJMS Mikasa in Yokahama and consequently wanted to build it.
I was originally going to build it in a small scale, like 1:600 or something but I decided to up it a little :)
I've been drawing it up intermittently for three months and started to cut it out a few weeks ago. It will be in a stae of transparency for a while until all the build work is done but hopefully you get the idea.
It's not 100% accurate as some the details have had to be left off due to scaling issues and I've also had to scale it down somewhat, it weighs in at 1300+mm long :D
All the smaller guns are from HLBSC and there's about £120 (or will be when I buy them all), the decking is lasered 0.8mm veneer and the rest (apart from a few little details) is acrylic of varying sizes. The main guns and turrets will be scratch built and will rotate.
Colours are to be the original ones as seen below, looks better than battleship grey :)

Is that £120 for all the guns you need?
-
INssssaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeee!
That's what I like about this hobby - anything from a single painted figure, to an army, to a table of terrain, to this is all covered.
-
WOW! ;D :o :-*

B L O O D Y H E L L :o

it had to happen one day :D
literally, the sky is the limit....
-
Bloody hell, mate.
:o :o :o
You take a couple of weeks off, pop the pills, and look what happens: Delusions of granduer!
Fecking brilliant, ambitious and bleeding bonkers all in one.
8) 8)
REALLY looking forward to seeing this big bugger grow.
:D
-
;D
James, if you started a thread and just posted that one picture, I wouldn't have believed you.
Not sure I still believe you. BUT IT WILL BE AMAZING WHEN DONE!
cheers
matt
-
I wish I had 1/10th of your talent.
-
Wow James !!! :-* :-* :o :o The problem is that you will never have an appropriate opponent unless you make that as well lol lol
LB

Holy flying Christmas biscuits, James.
*dies*
-
Wow, that thing could probably take on my whole fleet.
-
Look forward to this :)
-
Wow, that thing could probably take on my whole fleet.
Your going to need a bigger boat! ;)
So.....how are you going to use that on a gaming table! There's not a table big enough out there! Are you going to go and play in the park? lol lol lol
It'll be great when its finished mate! :-* :-* :-*
-
Many thanks gents :)
Is that £120 for all the guns you need?
Yup, got about a third of them so far :)
The problem is that you will never have an appropriate opponent unless you make that as well lol lol
lol I think it will be used as a gaming table, maybe something like Space Hulk, but on Mars, in the past :D
You take a couple of weeks off, pop the pills, and look what happens: Delusions of granduer!
I started drawing it up last year and have been cutting bits out every now and then but as to delusions of grandeur, why not go for a big one ;)

Certainly beats anything in the neff arms race but I think boarding actions are more suitable... Unless we play on the floor at BLAM... Or on one of those red tennis courts... :D
cheers
James
-
Meh.
You talented git. ;D
-
Do I see the cutouts for a steam catapult on the decking?
-
Certainly beats anything in the neff arms race but I think boarding actions are more suitable...

James
Doesn't matter how big it is, or how many guns it has. It will still get shot down in the first round on its maiden flight lol lol lol
-
:o :o :o :o :o
I want to play with your toys !
-
So.....how are you going to use that on a gaming table! There's not a table big enough out there!
Looks about the same size as a certain Zeppelin to me... ;)
Duel in the skies!!! Neff vs Zep!
Go on, you know you want to...
:D
-
I'm very jealous. Now start Port Arthur you slacker
-

lol lol lol

WOW - Now that's a NEF!
Tony
-
I'll build an airship opponent for this, even got the parts. Just need a *cough*former*cough* to sort the extras ;)
-
WOW!
'nuff said.
Looking forward to this on going project.
tt43.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Put a quick coat of primer on the forward 'bit' to show it a bit better but as mentioned it won't get painted until all the details are done. All the clear bits are lasered of course and the details are various bit of microstrip.

That's a good idea, I've got some Russian troops for Mars and they would make great opponants instead of Martians. That round Russian battleship would be great to make :D
And plow through his own troops
lol lol lol
Shut it you ;D

cheers
James
Crickies, I hated you at THAT point! >:(
Then, I saw the rest...
You know, having followed threads of yours before, you'd think I'd learn. >:(
Okay, one point: nef is boat or ship, right? You didn't even use an apostrophe. Is this currently planned to be the original Mikasa, or a flying version? I assumed the former, and would love same.
After the game fluff of Leviathans had the Russians sinking the Japanese fleet at Tsushima, however, the latter would be delightful payback! >:D

Bloody hell!!!! :o :o
Here's me trying to take some time out from the hobby but how can I when builds like this come along?!!
Absolutely spectacular old bean! :-* :-* :-*
-
"I think the phrase I'm looking for rhymes with 'clucking bell.' " :o :-*
This is off the Awesome Scale!
-
Here's me trying to take some time out from the hobby ..............
You do know that this is prohibited, dont you?
We will not allow it.
:D

:D
Dam.....I didn't think anybody would bring that up!! ;) that just wouldn't be fair though, a huge massive steel can bristling with cannon, against...........a balloon! :'(
How are you planning on doing the hull mate? Looking at the pic, you've, so far, lasered the main deck?
Also.....is this going to have a cargo bay big enough for a certain wizards tower? It looks big enough? ;)
-

Balloon goes pop lol
To be honest, I'm not that sure about the hull yet ??? I think it's going to be ribs and then either clad with styrene or 'filled' with blue foam and then coated. Not sure on the exact shape but I do think it should have a ram >:D
Tower is longer ;D

Neff as in aeronef. This ones gonna fly :D
cheers
James

Extremely impressive. 8)

You do realize that the next logical step in this dangerous game of hobby brinksmanship is drone nefs? Be careful not to let your insanity run unchecked or we shall expect mid-air battles in scale with real projectiles etc. :D
-
Beautiful work! :-* :-*
-
Well, I guess it won't seem all that big once you've finished your apparent scheme to map out the entirety of Mars in 28mm... I assume this is simply the flagship of a projected Japanese Martian battle squadron? lol
-
question is, will it land or will it need a docking station? :D
-
Yet another jaw-dropping project from you James! :o
Since you have all the drawings and what-nots ready, you need to make another not-a-neff one for the early 20th century gaming 8)
-
Just WOW...
-
Thanks again gents :)

Already got one of them ;)

No

Looks at photos.......swoons
Seriously brilliant project.
-
Such a modest project. You really should do something larger.
-
Ha ha ha
No
You could... all the other cool kids around here do boat builds in half. Half in 'waterline' mode and an additional hull piece for display/air gaming.
:D :D
I better skeddadle before I have something thrown at me ;D
Cheers

If I lived in England, I would gladly toss my Aeronef Carrier and escorts against that. Fancy a trip to Oregon?
Of course, I'll need to add some guns.
-
Good grief indeed.
This looks like it would have torpedoed the Washington Treaty of the 1890s! :o
Quite unethically I hope this launches an arms race across the forum :D
Stunning.
-
That's not a moon it's
a spacestation Mikasa Aeronef! ;) I hope there's a seriously precarious unarmoured exhaust port that small nefs with wings in the shape of an 'X' can shoot into!
-
Bloody hell that's massive! And pretty darn brilliant! Can't wait to see this thing progress. This is why I love this hobby! You never know what you are going to see.
-
Quite impressive. Looking forward to seeing how you manage the hull!!
-
James - you're mad as a box of frogs :o :o :o I love it! :-* :-* :-*
The solution to not having a suitable opposing 'neff (or fleet) is to use the Mikasa as the the game table and just conduct a bloody massive skirmish on her decks! Alternatively, a character-driven skirmish onboard would work well (like the game on the airship that the Scots brought to BLAM).
-
Shouldn't you be working on stuff for Salute?

I had actually assumed that a boarding action was the only practical style of game possible on a monster of this size.

"practical" and James' imagination don't always fit together lol

or using it as scenery, but static in any way
which is great!

I have an Aliens board which looks roughly like a large, wooden drawer; I considered putting folding legs on it, as it's a great quick set up at conventions.

Not to be outdone by the Japanese, the Imperial German Navy has started work on an UberNeff super carrier, 75" long and 30" wide.

Ferkin brilliant, ya mad bugger!

Not bad but you've used the wrong flag! Also, needs more RIVETS!

Faggot ::)
lol

Your at the kidding, that's just a garden table.
Its going to be heavy made like that?
-
The deck needs a drybrushed and as Dean says more rivets. ;)
lol

Almost, it's a garden gate I made today for my parents house. As I cut the curve to fit the arch in their wall, it occurred to me a bit of mischief could be had if I just put some of my VSF bits on it and took a photo :D
The finished 'UberNeff' lol

Apologies to James for the temporary derailment of his thread. Normal service has been restored.

Faggot ::)

Thanks; I'm just getting to pull up the jaw from the floor...
So, James, Salute's past. Nef should be finished tomorrow?
New terrain the day after?
Doug
-
How is this
wizard's tower giant 'nef coming along? It looks like the beginnings of a real beauty.
-
Still in a cupboard at the mo, languishing lol
I will make a return to it soon enough though ;)
Please don't go digging up all my old threads though... lol
cheers
James

Thanks for dragging it up - I'd not seen it before
I doff my cap you you sir ;) Nice work so far
(I too have a long list of part built stuff that loses momentum and get's shelved)

James - Will you be making a birthday cake for your nef, as this thread is approaching its 2nd anniversary lol lol lol
-
What DO you give on the second anniversary? lol
Pot - kettle.
Doug
-
James, you never cease to amaze me. :o
It seems the only way to top yourself is to make them actually fly! o_o
-
With all the little drones out there is perfectly feasible :)
I am NOT doing that though lol
cheers

Bit of a shit update but at least it's something :)
cheers
James
-
No, that is still awesome.
Doug
-
Sir, your shit update is better than some others' best efforts!
Although I'd like to think I'm competent at building kits, I could never scratch build anything a tenth as good as what you have shown us so far. I'd be too terrified to even try.
Your eye for detail is superb and your craftsmanship is exceptional sir.
Anything you decide isn't up to your standards can be disposed of at my address. ;)
I'll even pay the shipping err disposal fee! :D
-
There are no shit updates. ;)
-
Thanks gents :)
It's gone back in the cupboard for the time being until a few other things are out of the way (like Salute ::))
cheers
James

That line about "go big or go home"........ Big it is o_o lol

There are no shit updates. ;)
What this man said! Still looks great, Jim.

Of which I might have changed 'No, that is still awesome.' to total agreement, if the 'few other things' he works on didn't also cause jaws to drop. ;D
For now, I shall continue to pine for the further developments of Mikasa... :'(
