In the traditional of Grimms wonderful terrain, I decided to create some dinosaur bones terrain pieces.
I picked the set up at Hong Kong airport last year where they have a whole shop devoted to dinosaurs!
Here's the package it came it and this set is a T-Rex. Unfortunately I forgot to take any photos of it before I chopped it up.

Next I mounted it on some 3mm MDF and with some careful cutting I got 2 decent sized skeletons out of it. The white stuff is filler which I used to cover over the joins. You can also see the piece of bark I used for a rock, which helps to hide the inner part of the skeleton which didn't have much detail.

In this picture you can see how I cut the bones up and rounded the edges to make it all fit flatter on the base. I also chopped the tail in a few places to make fit the base better.

Next I drybrushed the bones starting with a light khaki and finishing off with an off-white. The brown colour of the plastic made for a great base colour. I also painted the rock but it ended up being a very similar colour so I might wash it to change the colour a bit more.

Heres a close up of the head. I used a fine dremel piece to gouge grooves into the plastic to make it look like the bone was cracked. Also you can see I didnt fill the hole at the bottom of the jaw, so I'll cover that with a bush when I flock it :)

Very nice approach.
what is the size of the model?
-
Cool, I did something similar with one of those kits you dig out of a plaster egg.
I really like the colour on yours, very realistic.
-
:o :o :o I realy like how you paint them .

:-*
Nice work all round! They look great!
-
Fantastic, the head looks incredibly realistic.

I have one tricycleopterous (?) and one of those bigosauruses ready for the same manouver. I'll take a page from your book 6mm fan.

One of the reasons I love coming to LAF is that people post so many great ideas, like this one, and I smack my head and think "Brilliant! Why didn't I think of that?!?"
Cool bones!

Thanks for the comments guys
meanderthal - I copied the idea from Grimms web site. ;)
Tomorrow I'll post some pictures of the finished model with some figures for a scale comparision.

Heres the final part of these
In this photo, i've textured the base and painted it and then drybrushed it.

And here's the finished product with a Foundry Baluchi figure for comparison. I tried a new style of basing and I'm very happy with it. But is means I have to reflock all my darkest africa figures to match. :-I

The vines in this came from a company called MiniNatur (which I think is part of Silfor) and look fantastic

Overall I'm very happy with the way they came out

I like it.
Bones in't fossils. Therefore, I surmise the presence of some rather large-ish gribblies out there!
Beware...we upright two-leggers taste like chicken.
Thanks for the tutorial and the swell pics.

Those are great terrain pieces!
Well done!

Top job! :-*

Very nice indeed! The scale looks perfect for 28mm.
What's the name of the manufacturer? A search on ebay could prove worthy.

they look great!

The only name I could find was Dino Horizons by a company called Cog.
Their website is here but not very helpful http://www.dinohorizons.com/
The range I got is called "Test Tube Skeletons"
Hope that helps
