Title: New Worlds
Post by: Galloping Major on March 28, 2014, 05:18:46 PM
I've been watching the trailers for this:
http://www.channel4.com/programmes/new-worlds (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/new-worlds)

Starts Tuesday evening. Could be worth watching, I continue to travel optimistically despite the disappointments  :D
Hopefully at the very least it could be a ripping yarn; it involves Judge Jeffries and Native Americans too  :)
Late 17th century with nice connections to Donnybrook - which I growing fonder of by the day - fingers crossed.

I saw the trailer, and whilst it looked interesting, the "Devil's Wh*re" still reminds me why television should be kept as far away from the 17th Century as possible  :)

Looks good from the blurb. Even with a character called Angelica Fanshawe... Ah well, I suppose at least it wasn't Fanny Fanshawe...

Trouble is it clashes with Shetland... Ah yes, Channel4 +1  :)

Looks good although I am going to miss the first couple of episodes.
As for Shetland don't get me started!!

Just seen the trailer.

Quite happy to give it the chance.

Glynis is distantly related to Judge Jeffries.

You might not like this then, as it is a sort of sequel to 'The Devil's Whore'...apparently it portrays Charles II as nasty piece of work he was.
I quite like Devils Whore, anyway. I thought I looked good at least.

Looks good but given some historical dramas recently I'm not holding out a lot of hope  :?

cheers

We got drek like the Tudors because it was drek we made ourselves  ::)

Really? I've just finished watching season 3 on DVD, and thought most of the actors had Irish accents  ;)
Oh yes, apart from the actor playing Sir Francis someone-or-other, who definitely had a North American accent which leaked out every now and then. Probably Canadian then :)

I actually quite enjoy it. The costumes are lavish and reasonably accurate - not the usual leatherette nonsense. The crowd scenes actually have crowds in - not the usual handful of embarrassed looking extras mooching around. The CGI palaces aren't too awful. Nor is the script. Nor, certainly, are the girls  :D

Jonathan Rhys Meyers (real name, Jonnie O'Keefe) is of course utterly ludicrous as Henry VIII.
Mind you, no more ludicrous than Ray Winstone playing the same role a few years back. That was surreally bad.
Rhys Meyers isn't a bad actor. And I suppose he has that note of unpredictable menace (possibly not entirely acting, according to reports) which is associated with Henry in the popular imagination.
Unfortunately, Dublin breaks through every time he gets cross (most of the time, in fairness).
The worst thing, of course, is that everyone knows Henry VIII was (by his middle years) a big fat ginger bloke... Whereas with his slicked-back black hair, pencil moustache, and fraying, chorus-boy looks, Rhys Meyers looks for all the world like a 1940's Italian spiv.

Overall though, I confess to liking it. Which is more than I can say for most 'historical' dramas.

Rather good, I thought.
Dark and violent. And political.
Not your usual period romp / bodice ripper.

(Just drek like The Tudors)

I loved the Tudors, ok so it wasn't history, but it was interesting and touched on historical bits enough to peak an interest... the end of series 2 I thought was superb, with Henry looking longingly at the loving swans on the lake....

Loved the Devils Whore as well - have both on DVD... haven't watched this new one yet though
