Title: El Prez' Extraordinary Victorian Gentlemen (& Ladies)
Post by: Elprez on March 31, 2014, 10:01:13 PM
I have a strange affliction, and I'm sure I can't be alone.

I am a “flitter”

“Cool” miniatures grab my attention, I buy them, and they end up in the “leadpile” for ages.

Now, I'm no great painter, so simply painting these figures for the joy of it, or for display alone doesn't  really justify my collecting, so a game like “In Her Majesty's Name” suits me because each company only really needs 6 to 12 figures.

Even finishing a dozen figures for one faction, before I get distracted by something else, is hard for me though, so I thought I'd post individual miniatures as I do them. I probably have enough undercoated or unpainted figures at the moment to make at least half a dozen different companies.

I hope to use this thread to encourage me to eventually complete actual, usable companies, even if I do jump back and fore between on the way. We'll see how that works out,  ;)

Anyway, pictures,  :)
Here is an Ironclad Miniatures “Iron Man”, and a Eureka Miniatures “Pax Limpopo Lancer” from Fighting 15s

And "Inspector LeBrock", from Bryan Talbot's "Grandville" graphic novels, available from Crooked Dice.

Excellent work! you can see my Ironcladman here http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=61840.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=61840.0)

I like your conversion, and I actually bought a second one so I can convert him to have some sort of weapon next time around.

And no, you are not alone. If they are on sale (or even if they're not, shamefully) I sometimes find myself buying figures for a future project that is at least 2-3 years away (given the size of my leadpile), or new realeases I just have to have....

BUT, painting the odd figure "just for fun" is an excellent way to get to some of that far away stuff, and to keep you motivated and not burn on on whatever the current project is!

I look forward to seeing more.

Your Iron Man is great, and in the correct colours too,  :)
I also have a second one, to be fielded without a weapon, probably,  lol

These days I also have to buy before I forget where I've seen them,  :?
And yes, before you ask, I have accidentally bought some figures twice, because I've forgotten I already have them...

This is what I have "on the go" at the moment, in various stages (i.e. minor conversions done, undercoated, at least part-painted).
It does not include untouched bare metal. But I AM trying to work on it, although admittedly without any organisation or planning, just painting whatever I fancy, whenever I have time.

I'm vaguely hoping to complete a Russian company, a dinosaur-hunting expedition, a giant rat-based company, Society of Thule, and some Brits in the foreseeable future,  :)

Oh, and a Nemo company too,  lol

Flitter? Re-buyer? Guilty as charged!

Worse, I've given up ever painting, holding the rare piece in hopes someday, someone will just have to it proper.

Does happen, but the pile grows faster.

Nice work, by the way. The inspector is SO charming, that I have to inform you that you've entered my list of despised competence. Oh, wait, after the Tobsen flyer, you were already there.

Is that a squad of Hydes?   :-*
Title: Re: El Prez' Extraordinary Victorian Gentlemen (& Ladies)

The repainted Heroclix Hulks behind the tank are intended to be a couple of squads of Society of Thule super soldier experiments gone wrong, so, yes, sort-of-Hydes.

My actual Dr Jekyll and (various stages of) Hyde are in the picture, but clearer here

And Lebrock is a lovely figure to paint. I love Bryan Talbot's Grandville graphic novels, so I intend to collect the other characters and eventually build a Dr Moreau-style company around them. There are only 3 available at the moment, but more coming.

The miniatures:-

Haven't seen any; I just assumed you were going for a darker 'Wind in the Willows'...  lol

Funnily enough, Mutton Chops do a darker take on "The Wind In The Willows" with a VCBW slant, with their "Windy Chaps" and "Weasley Wretches", although their creatures have become human
http://empressminiatures.com/userimages/procart59.htm (http://empressminiatures.com/userimages/procart59.htm)
Big Willie is a great miniature, isn't he?

Remember what I said about flitting? Well, today, looking at the excellent North Star figures of "Dodger" and "Fagin", I thought I'd like to
base a company around them, with plenty of street urchins, possibly "Dodger's Irregulars"?  lol

(incidentally, I loved Terry Pratchett's "Dodger" novel)

Anyway, a quick dig through the lead pile, and I came up with these:-
The massive Heroclix figure (Solomon Grundy?) has already earned the nickname "Tiny Tim",  lol

a mix of figures from Foundry, Hasslefree, Heroclix and a Goblinaid figure
What do you think?

And do you know of anyone producing Victorian children miniatures? Preferably street-kid types...

Nice work - I like the Leman Russ Steam tank conversion.

As to street urchins, I can only think of the various Hasslfree options that may suit. Also I recall Statuesque Miniatures has one in their Asylum range that may be useable http://statuesqueminiatures.shop033.com/c/4519600/1/statuesque-asylum.html (http://statuesqueminiatures.shop033.com/c/4519600/1/statuesque-asylum.html)

Keep going!

Have to repurpose the GW bits and bobs that I have lying around, recycling at it's most efficient.  ;)

Did a little painting of Fagin, or "Sol" as he will now be known.
No pictures yet, but here is one of a Gurkha by Pontoonier Miniatures, and available from Newline Designs

And a (Foundry) Sikh

I have a squad of 10 Gurkhas (painted), and a squad of 10 Sikhs (unpainted, but undercoated), but as figures tend to come in packs of 4, I usually have a figure
or two left over. Sometimes it'll be a duff pose, but in most cases, they're useful for mixed companies for skirmish games like IHMN.

West Wind has some:
http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=2_39

And these, although not to your specs:
http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=2_29

Foundry has some street urchins:
http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/castingroomminiatures/victorians/victorian-townsfolk-bcvc001/

EDIT:

Oh, and btw, your 'condition' is known as the 'butterfly syndrome' - an affliction commonnly known amongst miniature collectors/gamers.

Thanks Argonor.
"Butterfly Syndrome" is quite an attractive name for my affliction,  :)

I searched the West Wind site, because I was sure I'd seen some on offer from them, but couldn't find them, and assumed I'd got it wrong,  lol
These will indeed suit my needs:-

I assume there is some duplication, as there are 8 figures in the pack, but only 5 in the photo,  ???
The Child Vampires aren't really what I'm looking for for this company, although they are fine figures, and I may find a use for them later...
It could be cool to use them as alternative stand-ins for the "brides" in the "Entourage of Vlad Tepes, Prince of Wallachia" company for IHMN.
I've started painting a figure for Vlad, and I've chosen a possible Igor miniature.

Not really a fan of those Foundry figures at all,  :?. Although I do quite like their Fagin, but I already have two Fagin figures (North Star and West Wind's Empire of the Dead version)

Anyway, thanks for the fine suggestions,  :)
Anyone know of any other street urchin figures?

Don't mention it, I make a virtue out of trying to remember each and every mini I've ever spotted, and it's whereabouts. I have one of those brains that store trivia instead of really useful facts (although miniature knowledge can - to some - be deemed useful).  lol

I don't know what the children in the Kindernacht 'wagon cage' look like (maybe they are child vampires), but I intend to find out - I am painting for Chaos in Carpathia atm, and I'll definitely need some more of the Vampire Wars stuff.

Definitely useful,  :)
I think the West Wind street urchin pack must contain 4 figures, each duplicated. I have ordered, and will post pictures here if it's any different.
When you pick up the Kindernacht wagon, I would certainly appreciate pictures if you are able to post?

A couple of villains. "Marlon Kurtz" and an "evil doctor", both Heroclix repaints.

It will take a while before I get there, but eventually...
I usually post here when I've painted somthing - and in more detail on my blog. Right now I have a lot to do preparing for my mini-con in May (Argonor's Attic Attack), and also quite a few painting projects queued up.

I like your KingPin repaint, btw.  :)

Vlad Tepes is almost done, and I have an Igor figure.
I'm just trying to decide whether to give him more of a hump,  :D
I've chosen which figures to use for Vlad's "brides" (West Wind females from the Empire of the Dead Kickstarter)
I'm even considering a particular (Horrorclix) figure that I may use as a "bride" for Igor....
Oh, and I have some (West Wind) wolves which will be perfect.

Title: Re: El Prez' Extraordinary Victorian Gentlemen (& Ladies)

Warmachine. A dwarf boxed set. He comes with a drill rather than a gun originally.
The head and gun are GW. The head is form an Epic Titan, I think, and the gun is an Eldar heavy weapon.

You really mix and match a lot.  :)

I think the Lord on dino is a Bauhaus rider with Space Marine arms, and an explorer head?
Title: Re: El Prez' Extraordinary Victorian Gentlemen (& Ladies)
Post by: Elprez on April 10, 2014, 10:46:09 PM
Found a pic of the original Warmachine model.
He's from a set called "Gorten Grundback", comes with a dwarf warcaster, and 3 little "cannon robot" things, which I'm definitely going to find a use for at some point,  lol

And yes, you're pretty much right about the dinosaur-hunting lord,  :)
He needs the extra armour when hunting dinosaurs.
He's got 2 companions (part-painted at the moment). One is a (Napoleonic?) Foundry British officer on a GW Empire heavily armoured horse, and the other is a Foundry American Indian on a GW Cold One.
They also have some docile-looking pack-dinosaurs to carry their equipment.

I picked up some large-ish dinosaurs with a part-work magazine aimed at youngsters (the first few issues are always cheap).
So I guess they'll be on Dinosaur Safari on Venus, or in some long-lost forgotten valley.

And, yes, I do like to mix and match a lot. It can be fun to create a unique character figure,  :)

I did that a lot when I had sufficient funds; these days I only buy models that I intend to use for a project right away (I actually ruled that I have to paint up a purchase before making a new one  a rule that I have already broken on a small scale, but as the transgression consists of 6 small-scale spaceships for War Rocket that should not take me more than an afternoon to paint, I think I'll catch up).

I REALLY like that WM set. I could see multiple uses for it (actually, I have a Cygnar starter set that I never got painted, and the Jacks could come in handy for a variety of purposes, too).

I also have a lot of both large toy dinos (Schleich 1/48) and small metal ones (HLBS) that I should break out for some painting. So many minis, so little time...  ::)

(I have cardboard boxes bristling with minis for almost any setting/period out there - I'm not likely to ever run out of stuff to paint)

There's a lot of useful Warmachine stuff.
I picked up mine for a planned army that never got off the ground.
Most of it I reckon I can re-purpose for fantasy or VSF,  :)

Next in the painting queue is an explorers company, currently consisting of:-

Sir Harry Enfield (inventor of the Enfield Arc Rifle)
Lady Catherine Enfield
Private Whitehouse (the Enfields' bodyguard, and right-hand man)
Colonel Anthony Aloysious St John Hancock (of the East Cheam Fusiliers)
Griselda Pugh (Col. Hancock's secretary and cook)
Private William Kerr (of the Wagga Wagga Rifles)
Captain Sandy Wilson (Royal Navy)
Sgt Major Tudor Williams (Royal Artillery)
Gunner Harold "Lofty" Sugden (Royal Artillery)
and assorted native bearers and porters

Sir Harry often leads expeditions into the heart of Africa to test out the various firearms his company manufactures.
Her Majesty's government indulges him, but always makes sure he is well-protected by members of Her Majesty's forces
