Title: Agema Plastic Republican Romans
Post by: Monophthalmus on April 04, 2014, 06:22:32 PM
Hi All,
Thought you would appreciate some pics of our plastic Republican Romans all glued together, prepped ready for painting. I've also attached a couple of pics of our metal command figures, painted up by the very talented Gary at March Attack! Gary's working on painting the plastics up as we speak ready for Salute, so I'll post come pics of the full legion when they're done.
Hope you like them!
Cheers
Greg

They look pretty good  :-*
But I'd lower the spears a bit for creating an a bit more menacing pose

Well, they do look very good. Congratulations.
And Victrix are also about to launch their Republican Roman set I believe?
That's probably a bit annoying for you guys, but early Roman fans will be suddenly spoilt for choice :)

Are there any more comprehensive pics about other than what's on the Victrix site Richard?

just found that nice review on the new Romans, I think it's quite useful:

Thanks for the review link.  I bought two boxes of each during their pre-release deal and painted up a group for LPL.  Not my best work but hopefully it will give you an idea of the mix of figures. Link: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=65927.0

However I will add my praise for the figures.  They go nicely together, have some great sculpted features and a good range of arms, heads etc.  I have only two criticisms (and they are minor).  Firstly the arm holding the Hasta does not allow you to either ground the spear end at the correct angle (if using the kneeling figure) or hold it properly erect if using the standing pose.  The second is that only one figure out of the five has a chest protector.  I would have preferred to have at least two and with a slightly different design on each.

However these are minor quibbles from what is an excellent product range that is expanding all the time.

I picked up the metal command and character sets at Salute and they are terrific little sculpts. Would definitely have got a box of the plastic legionaries as I have the velites and they are very good, but I already have scads of metal Romans awaiting paintbrush attention.

Looking at those useful photos above, I am interested in the padded jerkin(?) with pteurges that one of the figures wears. Can anyone tell me if this is based on a representation or description that I haven't seen before?

Hi Adam,
That sculpt is based on a reconstruction from Graham Sumner's book "Roman Military Dress'. In the book, Graham makes a strong case for Romans wearing a 'Subermalis' or padded jerkin, usually underneath mail, but equally being worn in its own right by poorer citizens, or under pectoral armour for additional protection. He uses sculpural evidence from places such as Volterra to back up his claim. His evidence read convincingly to me, and seemed to be entirely logical - mail without padding is really hard to wear. Padding on its own would provide protection at a fraction of the cost, and aid movement - just like in later medieval times. Hence the reason why I decided to include such a figure as a Princeps or wealthier Hastati.
Hope that clarifies?
Cheers
Greg

Thanks Greg, makes a lot of sense. There is certainly some evidence for later use of the Thoracomachus padded garment under armour so it would ppoint to it being a fairly standard concept. I like that you have the courage of your convictions to go ahead and do the figures as you think they should be, rather than sticking to "wargamer received wisdom".

Always a gamble though - I've received some pretty interesting opinions on how Republican Romans should look. It's amazing how (myself included!) we as wargamers build up a repository of perceived wisdom as to how our figures should be sculpted. Hopefully we are not doing anything totally outrageous, just trying to rationally modify some of those per-conceived ideas. You'll see what I mean when I post some pics of our up-coming Carthaginians!!
