Title: 28mm Bush Wars additions
Post by: Super Mosca on April 07, 2014, 04:31:15 AM
Here's a first look at some Rhodesian African Rifles figures that I've been working on for Eureka.

As per, there are more photos on the blog: http://flyinggorilla.blogspot.com.au/2014/04/28mm-rhodesian-african-rifles.html (http://flyinggorilla.blogspot.com.au/2014/04/28mm-rhodesian-african-rifles.html)

There'll be an additional stick of 4, basically the bare-headed figures with caps added, plus a European officer figure to round out the set. The firing MAG gunner figure has a separate bipod for his MAG which is not in the photos. I have omitted the cord from radio to handset on the stick-leader figure, which the customer (that's you guys) can add if they want to, the pose in this instance meaning that the cord would be difficult to cast and overscale.

These figures have been an engrossing project, there will definitely be more Bush Wars figures coming off my workbench in the not too distant future.

Nice. One minor thing that's been irritating me though. The SLR has a non-reciprocating cocking handle which when cocked, lies flat against the receiver. You cock the weapon, let the bolt fly forward and the handle flicks back to that position. The only time it is perpendicular to the reciver is when you are actually pulling the bolt back to cock the weapon.

Apart from that, damn near perfect. Some bush hat variants would be handy though.

Cheers for the feedback gents.
Bush hats could be a go. I've been thinking that with American M1 helmets these figures could also double as 1960s Congolese troops.

Wonderful figures...

coming out when I have decided to not enter any new 28mm project for the foreseeable future due to lack of funds. So as much I have to say that these are incredibily nice... they are or too late or too early... the only thing in 28mm I have a need for right now is some SADF troopers...

I hate to drool at something I cannot get... umpf... damn recession... damn International Relations pundits... hope that Putin will save my career...  lol

Kosta,
Beautiful figures, well and believably posed.  Alas as Arrigo says, there are just so many projects one can do.

...don't worry Arrigo, plenty will step forth and fill your shoes buying these troops...no question.

The RAR are an interesting mix. They start the Bush War making many early mistakes, quickly adapt to the new COIN environment and become a first rate Fireforce unit. A unit with very strong regimental traditions, somewhat less flexible on a man for man level than their cousins in the RLI but tough, hardy soldiers and as good as most in theatre when well led....little wonder the Selous Scouts pouched many an RAR soldier into its ranks.

These minis will bring some lustre back to the gone but not forgotten Rhodesian African Rifles....

Yank tin hats would be greatly appreciated, will save me quite a bit of conversion work. You might want to ditch the bedrolls on the back. Belgians for the Congo would also be a winner IMO.

Agreed. Camo smocks with rolled sleeves, berets and para SLRs. The good stuff! :D

While you're not far off in theory, I think they are far too well-turned out to pass as any incarnation of the ANC or FAZ in the '60s or '70s.

Your guys clearly have a platoon sergeant who loves and nurtures them, as indeed all good platoon sergeants do, while the FAZ had Mobutu, who believed that because he gave them rifles, they could fend for themselves without the need for any further expense on his part.

;)

Yes but you have to give the man credit for his millinery. Mobutu had the best hat(s) of any dictator, past or present.

Bang on for the SLR, however these chaps would have been using the FN.
All the Rhodesian FNs I've seen all had a solid cocking handle, much like the cocking handle on the MAG/GPMG.

Fair enough, except that it's the same issue on the Aden Brits. Minor issue that disappears with a file.

Isn't the cocking handle on the FN that had a tendency to get loose and fall off? IIRC the father of a friend, who served with the Canadian UN troop in Cyprus, tell us that they used to carry small pieces of wood in their pocket to be able to arm their rifle in case the cocking handle wasn't there anymore…  :?

Anyhow, these figures are really great! 8)

Never heard of that and never encountered it with an SLR. Maybe Lithgow built SLRs were better made because IIRC the Commonwealth pattern weapons were all pretty similar in design. Damn near indestructible, the old mechanical rifle. I loved it. The M16s we had which were of similar or indeed slightly younger vintage had some real issues. About one in five required elastic bands to keep the magazine on the weapon, which made them marginally useful for training and unfit for purpose for combat.

...and here are a few painted...

..poor quality light and pic I'm afraid...I'll post a few more when the flocking is finished and light is better...you can see the level of detail though....lovely!

Cheers

Great paint job, the camo looks spot on!  :)

However I thought the Bush War was a gorilla war, not a baboon one? ... I'll get my coat...  ;)
