Indeed.
Those Africans look great.
Looking forward to seeing them all coloured-in.

Really looking forward to what you do with these figures as your 20mm bush wars stuff is spectacular.

There should be a separate bi-pod for the MAG gunner which may be still in the plastic baggie, hope you haven't thrown it out! Every photo that I came across with patrolling RAR had the bi-pod on the MAG deployed so I though it important not to cheat and have it folded.

...like the MAG gunner in this pic.

Well spotted chaps, one bi-pod retrieved from baggie. Luckily it had only made it as far as a waste paper basket and not the recycling! Thanks a lot.

Cheers, glad you like them.
I'm rather enjoying them, they are lovely minis, with some really nice detail touches such as the reinforced stitching on the shoulders of a couple of the jackets and the cut of the trousers etc.
I'll try and finish them this week. Also started on the RAR.

Very nice work. Just one small thing, the stocks and handguards on those G-3s should be an olive colour.

Hmm... I'll have to ask my father, but I think the original ones had that parts in dark brown. The ones we have at the Museu Militar do Porto (where they have a small and miserable pavilion on the back, about the Colonial War) are that way.

Thanks for the replies. these guys are only half done, so not got to the weapons yet. From the few colour pictures I've seen the furniture on the G3s does look to be a very dark green, a lot darker than the German army G3s of the 1980's. Either that or black.

I've also seen pics with a very dark brownish colour, similar to the old AR-10 stocks and hand guards. I was just going to mix a bit of black with some olive and see how it looks.

The Aussie and NZ ones? Never used the G-3, only SLRs pre the Steyr.

I may be wrong but I think the G-3 with wooden furniture is pre-production or very early. I think the FPB production models m/961 AKA G3A3 came with a olive coloured furniture, possibly the actual shade varying over time but that may just be the effect of photography and the light.

If the troops oiled the stock to prevent it splitting in different climates to that of the production country, it would take on the colour of that oil.

Oiling plastic and aluminium, doesn't tend to have much effect tho' :)

Thanks for all the comments and info. I'm going to go with the dark green option over the wood look.

I think the pic I posted with the wooden furniture may actually be a BB/Airsoft rifle!

The Portuguese troops are nearly finished, waiting for some PVA to dry on the bases, then some grass tuft and a last bit of dry-brushing etc . . .

Ok, I've talked with my father and you did the right choice - they were dark green and in plastic. The first G3 my father used has brown but after a couple of weeks they changed to one with the dark green parts. But the HK21 was always brown.

As I understand it the 'wood' G3s (CETME/H&K versions) arrived the same time as the FN FALs for trials (a few thousand of each in 1961 iirc), although even after the G3 was selected, both types of trial weapons were retained in service for some time. The most numerous were the 'synthetic' G3A3s, or the 'Espingarda automática m/963' as made in Portugal by Fábrica Militar de Braço de Prata (FMBP) from 1963, which replaced the 'wood' m/961 after just a year or so of production.

You sometimes see pictures of Portuguese troops with 'wood' G3s and FN FALs, but these are usually early to mid-'60s... hence Predatortp's dad seeing them only briefly.

I've never seen one in real life, but the shade of 'olive' seems to vary greatly with the light in photos, in bright light it seems very olive green, but at other times almost black.

What rules had you planned on using from your Bush War stuff. What type of actions did you plan on portraying?

Have you got any ZANLA/ZIPRA types painted up yet?

Cheers

Thanks Arlequin, bang on about the light in the pictures effecting the colour of the weapon, that and most of the pics being 40yrs old!

@ Happy Wanderer: So far I'm just collecting and painting. Not got any of the Zipra minis yet,I got the RAR blokes to try painting the camo on something bigger than 20mm, plus the sculpts looked really good. I bought the Portuguese chaps purely as I liked the models.

After rescuing the MAG bi-pod from the bin, I misplaced it again and made a replacement from bits. It looks a tad long now looking at the pics. Also had a go at getting some white into the eyes, but after cocking it up repeatedly, I've left them black.

Thanks for all the kind comments guys. These were great fun to do.
Think I'll go back and cut down that bi-pod, was not until I looked at it on screen that the legs looked so long.

@ Arlequín: Well spotted; I can't take credit for the tracer rounds idea, I saw it on this most excellent blog. .
http://johnwynnehopkins.wordpress.com/

These Eureka minis were the first thing that was big enough to make it worth trying out.

@ Happy W: The skin on the RAR blokes is Vallejo German cam.black/brown, highlighted with...Vellejo Highlight Germ.(Black) 337. Bottom lip a touch of Vallejo Burnt Cad.Redy. Then a couple of washes of the original colour and a wash of very thin black.

The Selous Scout was Vallejo Flat flesh (955), washed with a thin brown and highlighted with Vallejo light flesh. The Portuguese troops were Vallejo 912 Tan yellow as a base, a wash of some old citadel (GW) flesh wash, then highlighted with flat flesh and a bit of light flesh (Vallejo)

Going to be back to 20mm after this, I've got the new RAR minis from Under Fire on order . . . Time to break out the glasses again!

Don't even go there...  ::)

Eureka like to keep some things under the counter, or at least it seems that way. I was fortunate in having a friend make the appropriate secret handshakes and utter the right words at Eureka HQ so he could get some to send to me.

;)

Or you could just drop Nic an e-mail and ask him for some with the pass-word "How much?"  :)

"Give me a good excuse to get a 1/48 scale BTR-152, if there is such a thing."

The BTR152 is a big vehicle. I suspect that it will be too large too match with the 28mm Eureka minis and Company B are getting close on the BTR AFAIK.

...wait for Company B, you won't be disappointed I'm sure.  ;)

All I can say is that it will be out this summer..along with some very important friends for them to play with.

I dig this topic, since I realized that I missed it during months  lol

Tonight I was searching for painting ideas for my portuguese, after I wasted 1 paint bottle and half  of a 2d one (!) trying to make a background camo tone I though could work...I was wrong  >:(

And then, I've seen your portuguese, and you found the exact color scheme I'm searching for (litteraly) months.

As I explained on Guild, i'm afraid my current collection of paints is still a bit limited, and  I have no hobby store near, so I have to order all my paints 'blind"... It's quite easy for most common paint schemes, a lot more difficult for "exotic" subjects...

Could you help me ?

thank you !

edit : in the mean time, I'm doing a test figure using german fieldgrey as base  ??? I'll post the result (on my own topic to not hijack yours more  lol)

That's funny I was just looking at your Portuguese test mini, and left a comment.
The base green I went with was mainly German field grey, with I think some Russian uniform. The green 'stripes' were a mix of luftwaffe green and olive and the brown 'stripes' a mix of chocolate brown and a little bit of red leather (all paints Vallejo).

Hi Juergen, good question. I'll have to look back through old orders to see where he came from...

Looking at the pics I realised I hadn't done the final washes to the faces, so will tart them up and re photo.

@ Earther: I think you should dig out those minis, it would be rude not to! I managed to get hold of a complete set, at least I think I've got one of each. I'll dig them out and post some pics when i finish off the RAR faces.

@ von Lucky: That's an interesting thread. I bought the snapper last year. Placed the order near the end of October, recieved nothing, had no reply to email inquiry. Finally chased the payment via Paypal in December, got message saying the seller was ill, then a couple of weeks later an envelope arrived!

Slightly off at a tangent, but for anyone interested in the Portuguese army in Angola; I just got a copy of an old Al J Venter title from 1969; 'The terror fighters'.
The book is in near mint condition and has signatures of both Mr Venter and the photographer Clote Breytenbach. The cover is damn good for it's age and the back cover photo has also been signed by a Captain Ricardo Alcada, who features in the text.

Rather chuffed with this...

Under Fire Miniatures are a reasonable match (within human variation) with Empress (except "those Chechnya figures" which are about a head shorter than the rest of the Empress figures I have). They also match nicely with Crooked Dice.

It is like choosing any scale, what is the best in the period you are interested in, then you choose those which match within your taste.

@ has.been: I pulled these from the storage box.

L-R  Under Fire,                Eureka,               Eureka,        Black Cat Bases,           Britannia,            Mongrel,             Empress
(https://i.ibb.co/Fx0FtnP/28mm-size-comparison-LR.jpg)

@ Carlos : I wonder if there will be an MG42 or whatever it was rebadged as.

@ FreakyFenton: For basing I use various stuff; normally try to take the metal base shape off with some sort of putty. then PVA and dip in sand, then paint , more PVA then I have what's left of a jar I filled with dirt in Zimbabwe back in the 80's that I rediscovered in old parental abode. It's very fine, smaller than sand. I then quite often darken it a touch with a wash.

Done with these as well.

Here's the bloke with the LMG

Bloke on the left was a green base, tan for the LMG chap. Still using most of the colours from the 'German infantry paint set' I picked up to do some Volksgrenadiers.
If I do any more I'll try 'dark sand' as a base, see if the camo stands out more....

Thanks for the feedback.
I originally built up the bases on these to compensate for the height of the Britannia figures I'd previously done (giants); I had a go at getting one off its base, to redo the bases, but they have set like cement, so they will have to stay as they are...

I suspect he means these:

Given the sculpting quality and the errors in detail, some quite glaring, I'm not sure I would bother myself. They don't appear as if they would readily match the Eureka and Empress figures.

Title: Re: 28mm Bush Wars
Post by: Ash on December 05, 2019, 10:36:30 AM
Some of the NVA minis have back packs, seems to have been a fairly widely used design/style for the time period, so works well with a lot of armies.
The running figure with the RPG had an extra ammo backpack which I removed and swapped for a more Rhodesian looking piece of kit. Also chopped off the chi-com grenade pouches and added ammo and canteen pouches, then adjusted the bottom of the trousers and footware. Didn't have any suitable heads for swaps so went with the cam-cream look...

These are from Empress 'US Vietnam' packs NVA8 & NVA10.

Fantastic work Ash. I followed your 20mm thread with great interest and indeed may well have another go at a game. What rules will you use for these?

The 20mm stuff has seen a fairly hefty raid on the stash; a couple of T-55s, one of which has to be the worst kit I've ever tried to make ( will end up as a burnt out wreck); some air support for my EO contingent & a few reinforcement for the FAPLA boys.

Rules, mmm...I have the Force on Force book + the bush wars suppliament and Mike sent me a copy of his 'Wars of Insurgency' skirmish rules.

Also got some 28mm figures in the post; going to have a go at some larger Executive Outcomes in Sierra Leone. Good excuse to try some more camo patterns.

Was a little first experiment with Apoxie Sculpt (never be using GS again as I rather like this stuff). The Mk 1 attempt at pouches wouldn't quite fit the space left by the butt pack, so I removed the waterbottles as well then stuck them back a bit wider. The second go I just made the pouches in place. If there is a go number 3 I'll chop off all the bottles to make room for the extra little mag pouches that should be on the sides of the kidney pouches, and just stick one bottle in the middle of the rear pouches.

With these I tried Vallejo 'English uniform' as a base colour; shaded with some very thin 'German cam.black brown'. then highlight with the base, and added some khaki, then a bit of 'German cam. beige'. I think for a slightly lighter/faded look mix the 'English uniform' with the 'cam. beige' as a base ...

Funnily enough a lot of the 20mm figures came with helmets, but then they are suppossed to be Angolan, whereas the 28mm are ZANLA/ZIPRA & I just painted them as FAPLA. Could have done some head swaps with the Eureka Mech Russian figures, they have nice helmets, I just prefered the African faced sculpts.

Got a new toy. 1/48 Tamiya T-55, via eBay.

Going to have a go at a Rhodesian version, Op Quartz look.

Pretty much out of the box; leaving off the long range fuel tank/oil drums & adding the extra stowage box to the turret & some tiedown attachments.
No need for chipping or rust, as freshly refitted and painted.
Friend of mine offered to 3D print the box as my scratch building is not up to the task, less than 10mins in Solidworks he came up with this:

First test print:

I'll just need to add the handles.

Totally agree, it's been a pleasure to put together a kit that actually fit's together.
Most of my builds over the last few years have been either Hobbyboss (not bad), Italeri (not too bad) or ACE (the older kits are best described as challenging).
Tamiya went together so well I thought I'd done something wrong!

Yup. They almost build themselves and the guide key for the lower track means track alignment, usually the worst part of tank construction, is a doddle.

I’m a bit surprised that there haven’t been more after-market mods being produced for conversions.  So far just some PE engine screens and braces plus a couple of decal sets from Star. Not only is a stunning kit, it's a stunningly useful one.

I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on their new T-34/85. Another very useful kit and doubtless more user friendly than the insanely detailed Hobby Boss version.

Thanks Carlos.
I probably went a bit OTT with the brown, hard to work out the pattern from the limited amount of period photos (of the eight tanks, they look to all be painted slightly different).  First go at dust dried a bit lighter than expected, so I'll give that a prod with something. Extra stowage box should be posted tomorrow, then the wait to see how long it takes to get to the UK from NZ. I'm racing with my post in the opposite direct , see which wins...

Cheap batch of resin? The AK-74 mags were originally GRP resin/plastic. No doubt some functionary thought it would match the woodwork. Some of them are a really bright orange.

Curious fact, they also made AKM mags in the same stuff and you can see them occasionally pop up in photos from the ‘70s and ‘80s and beyond with client armies and guerilla groups.

Mmm... I just had a look myself and could see no mention of them.

I bought mine back in Feb 2019 and all the packs (Selous Scouts & RhSAS) came with a couple of the rucksacks & a couple of the 44 pattern small packs, I'd drop Bill an email and ask.

Type used by RhSAS/RLI etc, same design used by SADF in Naturia brown.

Useful items as they work well with other ranges, so good for convertions.

Thanks I will

If it's just ammo pouches I tend to make them out of Apoxie Sculp; add a little lump, prod it into a rectangle, use the tip of a scalple blade to make the lid, keep proding to get the shape you want. Let it cure for a while then add a bit to make the closure. I'm fairly new to using 'putty' for anything more adventurous than gap filling, so little rectangles seemed a good starting point. Had a go at hoods, webbing straps, rolled sleeves and some rather dodgy looking hands (see latest NAM conversions).
Recently tried adding some Rhodesian looking webbing/chest rigs and assault vests to some old 1/35 scale blokes (the waterbottles are from an old Tamiya kit).

Thanks, I'm quite happy with the way it all turned out, was a good practice for adding smaller pouches to smaller models and vast improvement over my earlier attempts.
These guys have been sat languishing in a box for a while, along with four 28mm RhSAS & four 20mm Rhodesians in shorts, and I (quite supprisingly) have no current interest in finishing them. Enthusiasm has wanned somewhat, just happens I suppose.
I am however still enthused with Empress's latest offerings in the 28mm Vietnam range and will grab both the British & German WW2 mortar teams in due course.

That bloke is an Empress modern Russian with a Eureka ZANLA head.
Backpack is part of the original sculpt; there are a couple of figures in that pack (RUS05) with the same backpack, they would be fairly straight forward to remove and add to something else.

Nicely done! You should flick a copy of that to Nick, there's a gallery on the Oz website and I know Nick appreciates people showcasing his wares.

Thanks guys. These are probably the nicest 28mm Rhodesian models (only critique would be the lack of the grenade pouches on the sides of the kidney pouches).
Can't believe it's getting on for nearly ten years since started on the Bush Wars stuff (20mm), there are some PIP pics of these 28mm back on pg 3

Between these and all the little 20mm blokes I don't think I can face trying to painting that camo pattern anymore...

More excellent painting.

That camouflage looks worth the effort.

Well, never say never. I do still have four RhSAS figures from Underfire and Bill has released another four RAR in 28mm. Just need to find the right head space...
