Beautiful job Neldoreth! Those shields are simply amazing! :-*

Oh, my gosh, Joe! Those shields are outrageous! You were right when you said you'd spent more time on them than any others!
Stunning!!!

Oooff really tough choice those shields are amazing but those mercenaries are also superb. Is the one towards the right a 'copy' of Sean Connery on Highlander
I'm losing my head with the choice

:o :o :o
(Picks up ones jaw....).
Those shields!!!
:-* :-* :-*

Fabulous freehand artwork on the shields Neldoreth.
Very tough on Thargor, because that entry is a really good group too. But up against such a bravura display of miniatures freehand, it's a tough assignment...

Tough choice!!!
Who makes the poor bugger with the burden and the beast?

Both are superb (love the poor bloody porter) but those hoplite shields are off the freakin' hook!
-
Neldoreth entry will be above the Rankings after round 5 for sure...
-
Excellent entry Thargor, a lot of character in those figs, kudos! Nice non-metallic metal! It's awesome that we both did non-metallic metal in this round :)
Thanks to all for the positive feedback, it's appreciated!

Neldoreth, I take my hat off to you sir. A superbly painted entry.
My minis are all by Freebooter Miniatures from their Freebooter's Fate range. The 2 on the left are from their Legends set, the figure on the far right is an old mini called Lobo and the "Not Sean Connery from Highlander" and the generic porter are from their Mercenary box set.

Well didn't want to vote on this one. Too damn hard. So i flipped a coin. Damn thing landed on its side. :-(

Both are beautiful entries! I'd have voted for either.
But.. Neldoreth, you know the way to our hearts. FREE-HAND!!!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* Blooming lovely!
Thanks for the treat on my eyes chaps.

They look very legit. That fanged face is really something. I think that historians agree at this point that the Greek sense of color was pretty garish (architecture, statuary, etc). I can really see these designs on the ancient battlefield.
The detailing and color on the fourth Freebooter is particularly impressive, great job!

Thanks Dr M.

Thanks Dr. M. I can't really take too much credit for the colours and designs being accurate; of all the miniature armies I've ever painted ancient Greeks are by far one of the best documented... With all of the pottery, carved reliefs, sculptures etc. of hoplites and their shields, and their stories, it's very easy to find historically accurate inspiration.
I tried to put my spin on things:
- Sad Medusa for example: I figured that having to live alone on some forsaken island was bad enough, then some adventurer had to come along out of the blue and cut her head off, then used her remains to carry out his nefarious plans, and then finally some arrogant goddess of war mounted her poor head on a shield! Really, sucks to be medusa and it shows.
- The fanged face the same. Poor monster, always invoked for war when he just wants to be a farmer ;)
Overall, it was a treat to spend so much time on just a few figures... the only problem is, these figs won't fit in with the rest of my much-lower-effort army :) For example, here's what I have so far:

Thanks all,
