I might have to have a look at that but I think it will need a bit of modding (and special cards :D ).
cheers
James

I'm not familiar with Sharp practice, maybe James can help you about this, but if you have any doubt about the conflict I can help you.
-
Hi rokurota, apart from the great figs you are producing what other units are there worth collecting. Would the armoured samurai by Perrys be useful for this period. Also their unarmoured figs, if painted up as shusengemi(think thats how you spell it) , would they be a viable unit to use? Any other tips would be great

Unarmoured samurai as Shinsengumi would work for smaller skirmishes and armoured samurai would work best for commanders or very small units :)
Jose is a far better authority than me though 8)
cheers
James
-
Armoured samurai and Shinsengumi be useful for the conflict (both on the Shogunate side), but in a limited number, the Shinsengumi mainly because they were a small force.
In the Battle of Toba Fushimi a big number of samurai armed only with spears and swords charged against the Imperial troops of Satsuma.
By the way, I will make Shinsengumi, working on his design. ;)
-
Thanks James and Rokurota that helps a lot. Will start rebasing my samurai while waiting for my next order from Empress
-
Are going to post them on twitter?
Got all mine based and primed now :D
I'll stick them on my samurai thread when they get a splash of paint on them :)
cheers
James
-
Got all mine based and primed now :D
Good news! :)
-
I will stick the samurai on here. Got Empress delivery yesterday. Satsuma riflemen should be finished this afternoon
-
Satsuma riflemen front and back
-
And back
-
They look great, especially like the way you paint faces.
-
Great stuff :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Very nice! How many miniatures per unit plan you make?
-
In the acw supplement for sharp practice its 8 men per group. Which is ideal as you sell them in packs of 4. Im planinng 4 groups a side as starters, and for every 4 groups i will allow myself one group of samurai. I keep eying up the perry plastic acw artillery to use the guns. I heard they were used in the Boshin war.
-
Sound good. :)
-
Good work!
Have you painted the oficcers?
-
Just ordered the officers from Empress. Hopefully have an update with some more figs this weekend.
-

Don't make your oders directly from Bac Ninh?
-
I imagine its easier to do so from empress because they are based in the UK.
-
The first group of eight shogunate troops done. Finally. I will also post up stuff i have done and doing with my samurai collection if thats okay.
-
They're looking good 8)

All fine by me :)
cheers
James
-
A couple of pics from stuff i have done recently. Using this thread will hopefully kick me up the backside and get more stuff done. Right first up is four ashigaru archers, and next is a group of Koreans i repainted recently
-
Love em all :D
Really got to get my finger out my bum and get painting the Boshin stuff and Koreans.
cheers
James
-
Happy to see it all. Looks great.
-
Well done! I like the blue uniforms and the koreans are great.
-
How did you do the ashigaru faces btw? They look great.
-
For the faces i used vallejo burnt umber, u.s tan earth, then 50/50 mix with cork brown, then cork brown and finally 50/50 mix of cork brown and flat earth.
-
Thanks mate, they look great. Can't wait to see what else you have.
-
Thanks. Hopefully i will get back into some regular painting. Doing tgis thread should help
-
I'm more and more tempted every time I see those Boshin war figures well painted.
Those Koreans are a colourful bunch aren't they
-
First group of 8 for the Imperial side. Hope you like
-
Yes, I like them! :)
-
Another group done. This time i present for your viewing pleasure, 8 Satsuma infantrymen
-
You're really cracking these out mate, I'd better get my skates on lol
cheers
James
-
Very well done!
-
And the big men are done! Front and back shots
-
Really love the gold on those :-* :-* :-*
Game! Game! Game! lol
cheers
James
-
Very nice. Those commanders have so much personality in the sculpting and you have done a great job of painting them.
-
Great work with the gold! I like a lot the Satsuma Officer, specially his red jimbaori.
-
Found this fella under one of my draws earlier, better finish him off
-
Quick repaints so sorry about the quality. Dipping my toe back into samurai
-
Good work, always like seeing different colour schemes than the ones on websites, did you paint the rest of the toyotomi set?
-
Not yet. Will be looking to do it when it cools down a bit. And work slows down so i can take my time with it. Great sculps by the way
-
First test paint of British B.I.F for use with my Boshin war figs. Two groups of 7 and one group of naval brigade methinks
-
lol
Am I a bad influence on you ;)
Looking good.
cheers
James
-
They go together nicely.
-
You are indeed James. Looking forward to getting back into this period now i finished my ww2 stuff

I see that Perry BIF mix very well with my Boshin War range. :D
-
I see that Perry BIF mix very well with my Boshin War range. :D
Paul Hicks' figures are usually quite compatible with Perry Miniatures in terms of general height, bulk and size : I've found out you can mix both despite the differences in sculpting styles.

Anyone recommend me a book on 19th century japan.
-
Anyone recommend me a book on 19th century japan.
Novel or essay?
-
just a standard history to start with. I dont really know to much about the 19th century japan and as im collecting figs for it, thought it would be a good idea to start reading up. I have read the last samurai The Life and Battles of Saigo Takamori. but would like something else to read.
-
More B.I.F support for the imperial side.
-
Great stuff matey 8) 8)
Enough for a game soon eh?
cheers

I hope this can help you:
- Japanese Military Uniforms 1841-1929 From the fall of the Shogunate to the Russo-Japanese War by Ritta Nakanishi (Japanese and English text)
- Illustrated Boshin & Seinan War by Gakken (Japanese text)
- Armies of the 19th Century: Asia: Japan and Korea by Ian Heath
- The Collapse of the Tokugawa Bakufu, 1862-1868 by Conrad D. Totman
- Shinsengumi: The Shogun's Last Samurai Corps by Romulus Hillsborough
- Samurai Tales: Courage, Fidelity and Revenge in the Final Years of the Shogun by Romulus Hillsborough
-
More B.I.F support for the imperial side.
Nice!
-
Thanks guys and thanks for the book recommendations
-
Need more shogunate forces for a game. Will be ordering them soon. hopefully back to painting samurai tonight!

James
-
Couple of samurai to kick off. Got to do sashimonos later.

These were done a little while ago. Gonna finish off the bases at the weekend
-
Very nice!
-
Unit of archers for my Tokugawa clan. Will try the steel fist decals soon.
-
I like them. A lot :-*
cheers
James
-
Decided on uniform colours for Ishida clan
-
That works for me, not too bright :)
cheers
James
-
Looks good. Nice contrast from the blue.
-
Good choice.
-
I think that's a good colour choice, I also just painted an ishida clan figure and i used brown too, I have seen surviving ishida ashigaru armour brown with orange lacing too.
-
Question, what the historical precedence for the different "uniforms" of the clanes and sides?
I just got some Perry tempo and spear men and was thinking of painting then a dark green, with red or orange facings.
Or can you direct me to an article or book that address's this?
-
I might give orange lacing a go on the next one to see how it looks. With my limited knowledge i thought armour was generally black, brown or red. But i am probably wrong
-
This is how far i have got with my steel fist minis. I will be using them as big men for sharp practice.
-
Awesome sauce matey 8) 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
The steel fist figs are pretty neat, I was looking at them just a few hours ago.
-
You have done a really good job on them, I also like seeing what colour schemes people use on the miniatures.
The armour colours for common troops were black, red, brown shades, and rust protected. Nobles also used the above plus gold, silver, copper, and flesh coloured.
If I paint the ishida I will use mixed colours, just because most clans had no uniform look.
but sometimes one type of armour was specialized in an area just like in medieval Europe, such as the Date clans use of bullet proof armour. So if you kit your troops out in the same breast plates or lacing styles you could have a kind of uniforminity even if the armour and lacing colours were different. Also you could do one or two bases as household troop in a well equipped uniform style.
-
Great job on the steel fist guys mate. They look great.
-
Well done mate!!! :) :-*
-
A group of tokugawa ashigaru yari. First time in a while i have painted more tha three figs at a time.
-
Very good mate 8)
Perry nagai-yari?
cheers
James
-
yep, you get a decent amount of them for the price.
-
They are really tough too, not liable to break easily
-
Well done mate!!! :)
-
Small group of ashigaru teppo, not my best work but no one will know on a wargames table. Bases still to do.
-
Group shot, group shot :D
cheers
James
-
Group shot, group shot :D
+1 :D
-
I will get the bases done then you may have your group shot :)
-
I am no professional but here are a couple of pics of where i am with the repaints and general collecting of a new clan. There are loads of badly painted samurai down in the garage but i have decided to buy new for now on
-
They look fantastic mate. Great work.
-
Just got to do another unit of nagae yari and maybe another unit of samurai
-
Wow awesome work mate :-*
-
Looking good, worth the work.
-
Missed these before :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Done these villagers a while ago. Need to get some more so any suggestions welcome
-
Good colour choices on those although I'd give the chap with the basket on his head brown clothes and the unarmoured samurai a different shade of trousers (darker preferably) :)
cheers
James
-
Old glory have a box of villagers. Not as good quality as Perry though and only come in packs of 30 with 10 different sculpts.
-
Cheers carlos, will have a look tomorrow. Shall repaint trousers and basket head tomorrow as well, might get the perry ashigaru carrying rice bails as a couple of them can be used, their rice barrackades should pass for a pile of rice bailes next to a paddy field
-
Another group of nagae yari. Thats the first clan almost complete
-
A couple of pics of the two groups together
-
Great job on those!
-
Great unit!
-
Steaming along 8) 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
Indeed looking good, how many more units for this clan?
-
so far I have one unit of arquebus, one unit of archers and two of nagae yari, need to finish off the samurai unit. I may add another yari unit or samurai. Then on to the next clan, all the other periods I collect I know there is an end point, with samurai it just goes on and on, tempted with 6mm or 15mm next but never painted that scale so might have to get a couple of packs at Reading in November, then it all starts again in a different scale ;D
-
The Peter Pig ones are well worth getting 8)
cheers
James
-
But that would mean I would have to purchase some buildings in 15mm, maybe a castle as well....
-
But that would mean I would have to purchase some buildings in 15mm, maybe a castle as well....
Oh, I never thought of it that way ???
;)
cheers
James
-
Personally I would go for 6mm and 28mm nice big difference between the two
Also cheap castle in the 6mm samurai section.
http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk
-
I agree with Carlos, 6mm gives a great mass look, and 28mm for detail, I would though get rid of the pikes and stick black brush bristles on the figs and paint silver tips on. as it's more realistic and durable. Alternatively castle arts is doing a nice new 10mm samurai range
-
I must admit, you would be better getting a plastic kit (1:300) of a Japanese castle as that Irregular one is rather wrong in a lot of ways ;)
I got given the model of Matsumoto-jo and I will eventually make it but leave it off it's scenic base and have it on a dedicated board with hopefully all the proper buildings around it.
cheers
James
-
That's probably a good idea Jim, about the castle I mean. Those plastic kits tend to be pretty good quality from what I have seen.
-

They are very good quality for the scale and there are so many available now. You can get temples in scale as well :)
cheers
James
-
Where do you get them from? I only know of hobby link japan.
-
Where do you get them from? I only know of hobby link japan.
Er, Japan I'm afraid :)
HLJ is a good source and the pricing isn't too bad but their stock levels leave a lot to be desired on certain items.
cheers
James
-
Just had a look at the castles, they are very nice. Are they card or plastic? This does lean me towards 6mm. Hmmmmm, will have a look at warfare in November
-
Also mura miniatures do 6mm buildings
-

The Japanese Japanese castles are all plastic.

Enjoyed the topic on the Boshin war here, i've decided to do it on a big scale 28mm, brought a ton of Boshin figures off Empress at the show and i have been collecting Samurai for 2 years now,and now i got my uniform guide book
(http://s29.postimg.org/qrihhxc3r/000f50e8_medium.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)
free jpeg images (http://postimage.org/)
The rules i will be using is the Victorian Steel wargame rules, these are perfect for this period.
heres a imteresting uniform i came across
(http://s24.postimg.org/gty4z1bfp/P1010163.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)
image free hosting (http://postimage.org/)
What i can gather is the the uniforms were not all dark navy almost black, but also white summer uniforms or mixed which is great for i.d. on units, i've decided 24 miniatures to each regiment
Nice movie uniforms on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMVqLmZC5yo about the Bohin war.Another thing i am soon to create is the Boshin war flags.
Watch this space
-
oohhh flags, That would be nice, It would be interesting to know if the white and red uniforms were used in the Boshin war and how common. I still have to finish off my B.I.F units, the Bac Ninh miniatures are very nice and am looking forward to when he releases more.
-
It needs flags to add that bit of interest and feel for the period
Suppose to be the Satsuma Domain army flag, most of new government Forces between Boshin Civil War used red and white color army flags to distinguish from black and white Shogunate Forces army flags.
Not set at high quality DPI but i can correct that, only thing with Japanese flags is the cutting out the white bits, tricky i would say.
I would of thought doing the flag in 3 parts as it would be so much easy to connect it to the flag pole and alot neater

The new miniatures scheduled for getting sculpted back in July have been notably delayed. Paul Hicks had an accident in July and it affected his sculpting hand badly. His sculpting output should be back to his regular volume soon but I don't have a date for the new figures yet.
-
Reply to the red unform, Gakuheitai (Shogunate), a unit with supposedly English-style training using Snider-Enfield guns and red-and-black uniforms
The French Chasseur d'Afrique would be perfect for the Japanese lancers, Old glory do some and i also found these, abit of converting and cutting can be done to fit them with lance and you have a regiment

cheers
James
-
I think they might be Jim
-
I'm sure i have some perry acw plastic cavelry arms spare that i could use. I think you get a couple of standard bearers arms in there, might have to knick your idea for the cav. Still thinking about converting their artillery as well.
-
I think they might be Jim
Jolly good :)
I might just have to get a few then :D
cheers
James
-
I had a crack at converting a figure, i used a ACW confed, and put a neck cover on the kepi, i used two paper clips for swords, which i easy could mark the sword hand with grooves i then used green stuff for belt ect... looks ok for a first try, will take a photo of it this week and show you.
I am going to have a crack at converting flag bearers soon, wish me luck lol
-
You could try Redoubt miniatures, they sell seperate heads with havlocks, I think Steve Barber does them as well and might match better size wise, I converted some of the perry plastic confederates with the Redoubt heads, bit big but work okay. I can put up a pic if you want,
On the cavalry front, how would you go about removing those beards!
-

When i see pictures like this it kind of gets me to convert if the miniatures are not around,i lefted my painted figures in a plastic container with Dettol for a few weeks and the paint got stripped off with a old toothbrush (with gloves on) just a case of hacking the heads off and fitting them on with the battle hats, new figures for the Boshin war, still getting my head around the standard bearers and will be working on them soon.

-
Thanks for the replies, much appreciated, got a question for anyone in the know,
Standard bearers for both sides, would the standard be of general European style or more along the lines of earlier Japanese ones? any examples would be great
-
I'll dig a piccy out for you when I get back from work.
cheers
James
-
Great unit! :-*

Nice work! I like the colors, can you tell me the recipe! ;)
-
I have actually started using Citadel paints again as they are easy to get a hold of where I live, some Vallejo thrown in there with good measure and a little bit of hope that it looks right :D
I need to get the other two done then its on to getting some more stuff for the town, like buildings and trees and fences and ......its not going to end

I can sort you some out just after Salute :)
What sort of size?
cheers
James
-
I'm thinking around 80 - 100mm, that should be big enough I think, also while you are there James, can your Chinese walls pass for Japanese walls in towns?
-
Very loosely and I won't tell anyone if you don't ;)
The gateway certainly can't though.
cheers
James
-
I will let salute get out of the way then I will tap you up for the trees and other bits that I quite fancy getting to increase my town
-
No worries :)
cheers
James
-
Good choice of colors, and very nice painting. :-*

Any size, any arrangement :)

James
-
They look ideal! I think I may need a few of them, two types, eight and ten figure ones. I will add them to the list of things to get. Thanks James
-
Well, first unit of Shogunate troops finished, getting there slowly
-
I'm liking these muchly! :D Great job, congratulations!!
-
You are making a great work with them, congratulations!
One question, who makes the standard bearer? and the nobori?
-
The standard bearer is from Perry BIF 19 pack. Uniform isnt quite right but i think i can get away with it. Nobori is from the Ii general perry pack. Hope it looks okay. Start on the rest of the Tosa unit tomorrow
-
They look great 8) 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
Closer view of the standard bearer. Cheers guys, really enjoying planning this out
-
Thank you, looks ok for me.
-
The Figures will be getting there first outing next Thursday, I will be giving Sharp Practice/ Terrible Sharp Sword a run out without any changes except for the samurai, its gonna be a small skirmish with 40 Shogunate troops and a small group of samurai against 20 or 30 Imperial troops fighting over a small town, will try to get photos
-
Please do get photos :)
cheers
James
-
Yes, pictures!
-
Tosa unit finished. Two groups of ten. Now gotta place an order for more figures
-
Slow down lol
They look great :)
cheers
James
-
Very nice, good choice gold nirayamagasa! ;)
-
Nice! Only twenty figures for Tosa?
-
I wa thinking 20 for Tosa, 30 for Satsuma, 30 for Choshu with two cannon to attack 2 x 40 shogunate with 16 samurai and one artillary piece. Try and chuck in some cav an shinsengumi , then try and make it work!
-
Love the gold jingasa
-
Not much this weekend. 2 officers, defences and building. Idea for the officers "borrowed" from rokurota
-
Very good project!! I should feel ashamed of my laziness after seeing what a dedicated person can do with such a nice miniatures. Very nice!!
-
Just looked at the building photo on the computer at work and the painting looks awful! It doesnt look that bad in real life, I will give it a once over later in the week
-
I'd suggest more drybrushing on the wood and a wash for the panels :)
cheers
James
-
I will give it a go, what type of wash would you suggest I only have the GW brown wash,
-
That'll do :)
Got your email and will reply tonight with those pictures I promised.
cheers
James
-
Cheers James
-
With a little bit of work, I am tempted to see if these could be converted into Boshin figures, what do you reckon?
-
I don't see why not.
-
Figures with those trousers can work well.
-
::) Look like the Perrys are getting more of my money lol
Stop it Colin, you're a bad influence ;D
cheers
James
-
Stop it Colin, you're a bad influence ;D
cheers
James
Same here!! ;D
-
Had our first game last night. First time with sharp practice, it worked well. Things that come up in the game, i had the samurai to powerful being higher rated and aggressive gave them a lot of dice and they wiped out two groups of imperial troops, formation in line works great for simulating the exchange of rifle fire between two firing lines and the need to use big men well. Another game in about a month where we will try adding more stuff to the rules as this was a first time and we forgot a few things
-
More photos
-
Cracking stuff mate, you've got quite the set up now 8) 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
Very nice
-
Thanks guys, really enjoyed the rules and am now thinking about collecting my first Napoleonics!! seriously though, I definitely need more terrain as the range of the rifles are 48" which only hit on a 6 but can be deadly as was found out last night with 6 points of shock from the first volley, we used poker chips instead of cards but did not include the random events so might introduce them next time
-
Amazing stuff! :o The number of figures is ok?
-
Always need more figures ;D This was about half what I plan to field in the end, unless I can get away with more. The only problem is officers and ncos, I will need more, have you any plans to release any more officers?
-
That looks utterly fantastic so far. I would love to play on that.
-
Always need more figures ;D This was about half what I plan to field in the end, unless I can get away with more. The only problem is officers and ncos, I will need more, have you any plans to release any more officers?
At the moment I'm working on other figures. ;)

Got the perry cavalry on order qnd havelock heads from Steve barber so will post up pics when they come through

Have you any pics of havelock heads from Steve barber?
-
Not yet, will post up when i get them

Not yet, will post up when i get them
Thank you Colin.

Got the first test cavalry done, head change with Steve Barber ACW havelock head on perrys B.I.F cavalry and a bit of painting to hide things
-
Works a treat :D
cheers
James
-
Work fine!
-
Looks great!
-
Two more cavalry figures head swap done and an attempt at a cavalry officer. Not perfect but once painted i hope he comes up okay. Body from perry acw officers 03 with head and arm swap with bac ninh officer pack
-
Like a lot the officer! :)
-
Small update today, two more cavalry figures done, and the converted perry acw general , not the best looking conversion but it should pass on the wargames table
-
Looks good to me :)
I'm assuming that's a Perry samurai house you've got him on?
cheers
James
-
Thanks James,
that is indeed a perry samurai horse, its lucky i have so many unpainted samurai stuff that i could borrow the horse
-
Good work, officer looks fine to me.
-
Nice conversion!
-
Excellent work! ;)
-
Thank you for the comments, hope to have an update this weekend if the weather cools down a bit
-
Well after a bit of "no more blue.uniforms painting block" i.have finished the second 40 man unit for the bakufu. Just some big men and standard barer to get at Devizes in a couple of weeks from perrys Sudan range and that should be the core infantry for the shogunate done, just need some shinsengumi. Sorry about the pic as its quite a few minis to fit in.. Th plan is to finish ofto f the Imperial infantry and then pick up the odd bits of figs to finish off. From August it will be scenery to get, so Mr Jimbibbly I will be chucking a few pounds your way!
-
Great stuff mate, they look brill all together 8) 8) 8)
I've got all the bits cut out for the buildings and will proceed to make them over the next couple of weeks :)
cheers
James
-
Cheers James, like i said, if all goes to plan from August i will be ordering quite a bit from you.
Only got 30 Imperial troops to go now :D
-
Amazing work! :o
-
Those convertions look great. Looks like I could do the same thing to make some Mexican lancers for both Republican & Imperial armies for my Maximillian project.
-
Back from Devizes and this is what I have planned with one of the figures from Perrys Sudan range. Not painted yet and need some green stuff on the trousers
-
Great little conversion 8)
That's the great thing about doing an army without a proper uniform as standard, you can get away with quite a lot :D
cheers
James
-
Finished the 30man satsuma unit tonight and also Tosa officer, onto finishing the cavalry next
-
Cracking stuff 8)
Puts my ten man unit and artillery peice to shame lol
cheers
James
-
Cheers James,
It feels like I am on the home straight with the figures but then its on to the buildings
-
They looks great! :)
-
Thanks Jose
Any news on the Shinsengumi yet?
-
Little conversion last night with a perrys sudan officer, head swap with some green stuff
-
Really liking these conversions 8)

Little conversion last night with a perrys sudan officer, head swap with some green stuff
Great work with this officer, like a lot!
-
Paul is working on dollies.
Hooray :D
cheers
James
-
could someone tell me if this is the imperial flag from emperor meiji, I believe it was given to the Satsuma troops at the battle of Toba Fushimi. Also, should i put a river and bridge on the table....hhhhmmmm
-
Correct, a golden flower centred on a red background.
-
Got the cavalry unit done today, not the best painting I have done, but they will do, onto Choshu unit now, if I can avoid being sidetracked with lotr and old west stuff
-
Finished the Sudan mini conversions as well
-
Great stuff :D
Just thinking, do you want the two kura on the same base or separate?
cheers
James
-
Same base would be good. Cheers
-
No worries :D
cheers
James
-
Choshu unit finished. That should be all the core units finished ubless i add a bit more, onto artillery next and a couple of mounted generals
-
Great work, like always. ;)
-
Some pics of the imperial army so far
-
and some pics of the shogunate troops
-
All coming together rather nicely and I really like the textures on that terrain tile
-
Correct, a golden flower centred on a red background.
In fact, you have a (supposedly) more accurate version here:
And yes, the imperial supreme commander and the imperial standard bearers had a decisively archaic look.
BTW, are you going to model the traditionally equipped shogunate forces too?
-
Thanks for the replies, i am planning on some shinzengumi to add to the shogunate force. I already have some samurai and might do a small unit of ashigaru with some head swaps . But what i have done so far will be the core units
-
That looks stonking mate 8) 8) 8)
Will it be a participation game ;)
cheers
James
-
Cheers James, I haven't even thought about doing it as a participation game. I will give that some thought. The plans at the moment are to do the new Bournemouth show in February to start with, all depends on if my dad has recovered from his surgery by then, as he will be helping me with it. I do need to get some more games in soon to run through the rules, I am hoping that two fat lardies release version 2 of sharp practice by February as what I have read about them being streamlined in places would help with the running of the game
-
Quick question, did the Shogunate mounted officers wear samurai uniform or were they more westernised?
-
Looking very impressive well done.
-
Quick question, did the Shogunate mounted officers wear samurai uniform or were they more westernised?
I don't know the fact but is possible that some officer wear samurai uniform.
-
Thanks rokurota, i think i will go with wesernised look.for imperials and maybe samurai for shogunate, just to add something different
-
Nice. Let me give you some unasked-for info:
- Shinsengumi: supposedly they were not wearing any uniform at this time, although they had used to (the famous white and blue ones), although in "Sword of the samurai" they are depicted wearing a curious uniform black and red colour, so your choice (BTW, don't think on western-style uniforms: they wore traditional samurai attire). Another shadowy question is if they wore armour or not, but they were wearing chainmail armour during the street actions in Edo a few years before the war, so I guess it's your choice.
- Samurai and ashigaru: well, at this time the daimyo's armies seemed to have completely lacked any kind of uniformity. The ashigaru of the XIXth century were the lowest-class samurai, not the peasant turned soldier od the XVIth century. They wore a horrible mix of armours, from archaic-style (kamakura period) to the bullet-proof nambanjin armour of the late stages of the clan wars. Anyway, it seems that most of them had discarded the leg protections (suneate).
BTW, are you thinking about providing them with cavalry? And do you know museum miniatures' samurai range?
-
Thanks for the info Yuber, the only cavalry I will be using is the ones I have already painted, the Sharp Practice rules are large skirmish so I dont want to go overboard on the amount of units or it will get boged down, I can stretch to around 100 figs or so a side. I am aware of museum miniatures, do you think there are some suitable miniatures to use there
-
Suitable? They are a must! If you check the odd drawing from that era, you'll see that some people from traditional clans didn't wear any armour at all! (this is supported by a few japanese films in which only a few samurai on a given contingent would wear armour, sometimes just the daimyo!). They are just perfect to represent the minor, poorer clans.
BTW, I was talking about cavalry because all of it is described as almost useless in this age (obviously, aside the deshuntai). The japanese horses seem to have degenerated in the two centuries after the age of war, and most of them were closer to ponies than to european horses. The japanese horse had always been small and ill-tempered like the mongol on, but these ones had degenerated to the point that europeans despised them (that's why Napoleon the Third had presented the shogun with such a lot of horses).
-
Its been a while but havent forgotten this project, busy with terrain and buildings. Here is a small update. Artillery for Imperials and shogunate forces and a start on the imperials officer base with mounted commander and drummer,
-
Please go on. This can't be more beautiful!
-
Great work!
-
Thanks guys. Command base finished
-
Great stuff 8)
cheers
James
-
Continuing to impress Oly.
-
Great base! :o
I will put it on my blog, I hope this won't be a problem for you.
-
Help yourself Jose,
-
Its been a while since i posted on here due to taking a rest from the project. I have started the terrain boards for the town so heres the wip of the first bit
-
Looks fine.
-

-
Finished the house. Only 9 more to go
-
Nice!
-
Well done!
-
Does the job 8)
cheers
James
-
Very nice!! ;)
-
Quick update as to where I am with this project. Terrain boards are almost finished so will post pics this weekend, started on the town with the telegraph poles to do next and finish buildings off, some more figs coming from Bac Ninh soon so will get them painted up and the command for the Shogunate to do, then I think I am done, might add more minis though , and buildings....
-
Well I will be gaming tonight to give the rules a run through, only a small skirmish with a scenario of the Imperial troops escorting some villagers to the city, and the Bakufu launching a rescue of sorts to free the villagers who are on their side will try and get some photos up tomorrow if the battery on the phone lasts long enough!
-
Looking forward to seeing the after action report.
-
So we had our game last night. Scenario was for the imperials toe escort the villagers from one side of the table to the other and the Bakufu launch a suprise attack,
The imperials moved forward slowly at first aware that something was up, as they reached the houses the Bakufu launched there attack from the rice fields, this wasn't as successful as was hoped and the firing bought on reinforcements for the Imperials. Then another group fired on the Imperials from the shrine causing some disarray amongst the Satsuma troops.
The Satsuma troops finally managed to form up behind the fencing and returned fire with little success. More Bakufu troops started to come into the battle then with an attempt to outflank the Imperials on their right but the Choshu took up defencive positions in a house and behind a wall, rifle fire was exchanged for a time as each side tried to whittle down the opposition, after a while the Bakufu Samurai decided (Card did not come up) to make a move through the shrines grounds to launch a frontal assault on the Satsuma lines. The samurai managed to get into hand to hand combat but had taken to much shock and were not strong enough to break the Satsuma lines. The line troops of the Bakufu also charged in and managed to cause the left side of the Satsuma troops to pull back
At this point we called it a night and called it a draw
-
More pics
-
Enjoyed the report.
-
Great report & figures! ;)
-
Very nice battle set up.
I found http://www.dramanice.us/yae-no-sakura online free to watch. In Japanese with English subtitles. It is about the Boshin War and the lead up to it. Viewed from the Shogunate side by an Akira Samurai family, who's daughter was the Japanese Joan of Arc. From what I can make out it is a factual drama, and is very good to watch whilst I am fiddling with Tosa cavalry conversions. Bac Ninh Shogunate heads and green stuff Shagumas. There are a few shown in contemporary pictures, but I can't work out how to upload.
-
Realised i needed some more big men for game of sharp practice on Wednesday, so rushed these today, not the best painting but they should pass
-
Congratulations, nice conversions, I like it. ;)

Nice!

Very Cool!
I wish I could play too :'(
-
Very nice
-
Great looking table & figures!
-
Great looking game there, Oly. I was looking through your thread, and I think I'll be pinching a lot of your conversion ideas.
Out of interest, were you using the standard Sharp Practice rules or the Terrible Sharp Sword supplement?
-
I did start with terrible sharp sword but went back to sharp practice as its a little simpler in the different types of units. Although, sharp practice 2 should be out soon
-
Great looking games mate :)
The telegraph poles really help to bring it all 'in period' 8)
cheers
James
-
Very impressive set up Oly.
-
some more pics from the Christmas game
-
and three more
-
Great stuff :D
cheers
James
-
Would have loved to have seen this game on display.
-
The display game table will be smaller than the one we used at christmas as the amount of figures were spread across the table, 1st display game is on February 20th at Bournemouth BIC
-
Very nice! :-*
-
Very nice !
-
So with the release of these from colonel Bills, I have one question, did the Japanese use oxen for their carts or is this more a far eastern thing
http://shop.colonelbills-store.co.uk/epages/4f27da57-42ee-48c0-9cb8-22c9dd921a68.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/4f27da57-42ee-48c0-9cb8-22c9dd921a68/Products/DBC005

-
Great looking game. More of the same please. ;D
-
Colin, I have posted some pictures in my blog, hope that this doesn't bother you.
-
help yourself Rokurota, couldnt have done it without your help and James
-
Thanks to you! ;)
-
someone has posted up a video on you tube of the Beachead show, my table can be seen at the 5:45 min mark if you want to see it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykD3eL-kdwY
-
Samurai house done at the weekend, i will be adding more buildings through the year to increase the town. More minis will probably be added as well
-
And I thought you were taking a break lol
cheers
James
-
Its very odd, I get to this time of year and get an urge to go back to my Japanese stuff, I am already planning more units for the Boshin war, gonna do some in summer uniform methinks... It also doesnt help when you post up new products, so you are directly to blame :D
-
It also doesn't help when you post up new products, so you are directly to blame :D
Jolly good :D

So a quick question, how useful are the Empress minis New Zealand War range useful for the British in Japan in the 1860s?
-
So a quick question, how useful are the Empress minis New Zealand War range useful for the British in Japan in the 1860s?
Not very really, I've had a look and they are too early I think. Some could be used for ships crew included in smaller actions. Some of the civvies could be used at a push but not many.
cheers
James
-
Started a new unit or two for my Boshin war stuff. Might not be historically acurate but its a bit of a change to black or blue uniforms. So i painted up Shogunate troops in summer uniform. Expect different painted troops over the next few months.
-
A good take on it and I don't see why they shouldn't be in summer uniform 8)
cheers
James
-
Cheers James,
Enjoyed painting them, think I will do a couple of groups of eight for Sharp Practice, should look okay on the gaming table
-
Just thinking that maybe they would look good as un-dyed linen. You know, a rushed set of uniforms that weren't able to be coloured on time? Dunno if that would work or not.
cheers
James
-
I think they could pass for undyed linen, these wont be used in the display game, but I'm tempted to collect more figures to do larger battles, I'm looking at the black powder rules as something to use for larger games
-
Great job on Ii
-
Well done! On Ritta Nakanishi book can see those summer uniforms.
-
Cheers Rokurota, thought I had seen the image of them somewhere,
-
First group of 8 done of Shogunate summer uniform. Also, bought some minis from Foundry which turnt out to be 25mm so size wise dont quite match up with Bac Ninh and Perrys. But as i will be using them for Sharp Practice it shouldnt show to much
-

-
If the Foundry mins rifles are roughly the same size as the Bac Ninh an Perrys, they can just count as some shorter troops.
-
They don't look too badly out of scale and if they're in their own units I don't see a problem :)
It's going to look really interesting with all the different unit types on the table 8)
cheers
James
-
As say James, in their own units can work well.
-
Thanks guys, I had to put the foundry minis on 1p and 5p coins to get them close to the same height, i will get the rest of the pack finished off then order some of Perrys Carlist minis and see if they mix
-
Small update, some more Shogunate in summer uniform, now up to 12. And a start on the elite troops, only gonna do 8. Thanks to Crouchie and Rokurota for the inspiration
-
Great stuff :)
You're so weak though lol
cheers
James
-
Cheers james, was even looking at the cavalry that Crouchie had done and trying to work out how many I need ;D
-
Colin, you don't sleep, right? ;)
-
I am in the middle of reading Ernest Satows diplomat in Japan, on the section of Britains attack on Shiminoseki he refers to the British as Bluejackets, so I am asking anyone in the know, would the British be wearing the same type of uniform as they wore in places like India and New Zealand. There is only one reference to redcoats so I would take it that they were few in number.
By the way, it's a great book with a great insite to Japan at the time
-
I would assume he's referring to the naval troops? There's that great picture of them all surrounding the captured guns at Shiminoseki and as far as I can tell they are all naval.
cheers
James
-
Cheers James, he does make mention of the Marines along with the bluejackets so wondered if he was referring to different troops, he does make mention of cavalry troops later in the book as well, but no mention of uniform. Pic from book
-
The caption says 'allied naval forces' so I wonder if he is referring to other countries troops?
There is a book I found in Japan in, of all places, a small supermarket cafe that might have some info on them. I couldn't take it with me but I did take a picture of the cover. I'll have a look for it on Sunday as I keep meaning to buy it myself.
cheers

Finished off the two groups in white uniform for sharp practice. Need to do an officer now
-
Very nice mate!

So, Im gonna be at Bovington this weekend with the display game this year, this will be the last one this side of christmas. I am planning on adding to it over the next few months and maybe do it again next year as a come and play game. maybe move the game into the town itself adding more buildings
-
Sounds good to me :D
Hopefully I'll make it to Bovvy as I really want to see it in the flesh but we get back from Japan in the Friday so I might be too knackered lol
cheers
James
-
Good luck at Bovington!
-
Some pics from Bovington
-
So, that's it for the display game this year unless I can be convinced to do Reading. We were a little tucked away between tanks so didn't get much footfall. It was nice to meet people from the forum and Twitter. Time to take stock now of where to go, the British invasion of Japan calls methinks
-
Looks great again 8) 8) 8)
Colours might be a better option as the hall at Warfare is a bit of a bear pit.
Time to buy those Perry BIF then :D
Sorry I didn't make it down, a 12 hour flight and eight hours jet lag kind of knackered me out lol
cheers
James
-
It all comes together wonderfully, great work

We will be at colours, Newbury on the 10th of September for our final show of the year
-
Well, that's Colours all done and finished. Loads of interest in the rules, minis and terrain which was nice. I didn't get any pics so if anyone has some to share that would be great, plans for next year are bouncing around in my brain at the moment, moving the fight into a town, possibly a fight for control of a bridge.
Many thanks to Rokaruto and Jimbibbly for All their help, I will be calling on you again in the future
-
Great looking game and good to see it finally in the flesh 8) 8)

It was good to see you at the show, thanks for sharing the pictures, mine will not load up on here. I'm looking forward to moving the fight into town over the next year
-
Looks fantastic guys!
-
Congratulations mate! Great game & terrain and minis! ;)
By the way, nice pictures James. :)
-
Plans have started springing into my head to move the fight into the town, basically the board with the town on it already will be the same but I need to make the road a little larger for the movement of troops so maybe go to a 6 x 5 table?
another board will have buildings on it and the centre board will have a large river running through it with a bridge to go over, again a large bridge to be able to make the fighting across it reasonable, any thoughts on this would be very helpful indeed. Also, ideas for the bridge would be greatfully received as most bridges I have seen that are sold dont fit right with what I have in mind, would it be of wood construction or would it have a more 19th century feel to it. I will also be adding different troop types to the units with more 'old fashioned' armed units and a Tosa cavalry unit for the Imperials
Again many thanks to Rokurota and Jimbibbly for there help, much respect and I owe you both
-
Regarding the bridge, unless it was a major trading route near the large centres of commerce then the bridge would be wooden and if you have a look here http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=65902.135 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=65902.135) you'll see a simple type that was common through out the country. There are bigger and fancier versions of which I can post a photo when I get home from work.
cheers
James

That would do fine, just would be wider and longer, might have to commission one from you :D

Thank you James! ;)

So, after a break it's time to plan for 2018!
I am planning on moving the battle into the town, that means more buildings and unfortunately for Jimbibbly, more commission's. I will have a large river running through the centre with the town either side, the river will be around a foot wide with a large bridge to cross.
I have started on cavalry for the imperials and plan to add some more traditional minis, it also gives me an opertunity to field some shinsengumi, I have started the first building piece, a samurai house,
This is part of a plan to avoid any new projects this year as the wife and I are planning a move to the West country and I don't need more minis to transport, also I have started on an article for WSS magazine about the Boshin War
-
Great stuff 8) 8)
unfortunately for Jimbibbly, more commission's.
No problem at this end :)
Looking forward to seeing the article as well 8)
cheers
James
-
Samurai house finished, will move onto the temple next

Great work!! :)

Splendid :)

James
-
Great work mate!
-
A start on the temple, simple enough just some trees and torii gate, torrid gate from Oshiro terrain
-
Nice work Colin, who is the manufacturer of the Temple?
-
Thanks Rourota, it was a commission build from Jimbibbly a few years ago

The temple and it's board are looking very good.
-
Fantastic setup. Game table is beautiful.
-
nice work :-*
-
Thanks for the replies, will be adding more soon
-
Stop it. I have tons of AWI to paint, and this is a distraction. Lovely stuff.
-
More work on the the terrain today, all buildings are done so I will post up a WIP tomorrow of the board
-
Huzzah :D
cheers
James
-
Looking good. You keep a pile of rocks in case you lose your marbles?
-
My marbles were lost a long time ago, my wife is studying Geology so we have rocks all over the place.
More work on the board, this is the general layout, I need to repaint some of the terrain for it to blend with the board
-
Now that is wonderful :-* 8) :-*
I'm very impressed :)
-
Splendid spread :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Great looking table
-
Great looking table
Scondd, lovely set up. ;D
-
Amazing! :o
-
Six Shogunate sentries for my town board, useful for a couple of scenarios
-
Fantastic looking board you've got there. Really reminds me of the models in the Edo museum in Tokyo :)
-
Small update, just one mini, Kondo Isami, Shinsengumi leader in everyday clothing
-
Nice!
-
I must stop coming this forum. I see a new thread and click in it; and then see wonderful tables, or great miniatures painted, new projects and plans pop up in my head like the lights on a Christmas tree! Guys... please! I have not that much time!! Nor money!
-
My bridge by Oshiro model terrain was delivered today, superb work from the master Mr jimbibbly, will make a great centre piece for the table
-
Nice!
-
Small update, a test paint for an Aizu standard bearer to go with Back Ninh new minis, Bournemouth is booked for first outing so gotta finish board and paint a new army by February next year
-
Well done mate! ;)
-
Aizu troops are in full flow at the moment, getting close to finishing the force
-
Very nice!
-
Nice miniatures!
Do you use Shinsengumi miniatures to depict Aizu troops with traditional weapons ?
-
The Shinsengumi are part of my core force, I haven't got round to traditional troops yet
-
OK. So what are the troops on the first picture ? Shinsengumi in civilian dress ?
-
They are, I gonna use them with the Daisho rules
-
The Shinsengumi are part of my core force, I haven't got round to traditional troops yet
That reminds me... is Bac Ninh going to produce traditional troops at some point in the future?
-
Some pics of a test game today, need to add a unit of cavalry before our first show at Bournemouth in February
-
Looks great! I look forward to seeing the whole game.
-
Very nice table ! :)
-
Amazing!!! :-*
-
Great!
-
It's been a while, but we had our final display game today at colours, this has been a labour of love for the past few years, a massive thank you to Jimbibbly from Oshiro, and Jose from Bac Ninh miniatures for the help and inspiration,
Can't decide whether to store everything away or to start working on a campaign and some gaming with the British invasion
-
Stunning table :-*
Do a campaign! You know you want to :D (It might get me off my arse to do my one as well).
-
Lovely looking game - I agree, campaign to continue showing it all off.
-
Nothing wrong with reusing the terrain for a fictional British invasion campaign. Could toss some Yanks, and French too.
-
Amazing!!!
-
Excellent game. Almost tempted me into Boshin War...... It's far too good to be put into storage.
-
Best table of the day! Great stuff!
-
Just read thru this old thread again. Great looking figs and terrain. :D
-
Cheers, they have all been in storage for a year, but think I've convinced the wife to have a game this week😁
-
Got to break those figs out of storage every once in awhile. :D
-
Well done...the terrain and buildings are spectacular.
