Title: Daishō – Skirmish Wargaming in Mystical Japan
Post by: Craig on April 24, 2014, 04:35:10 AM
The blog covering the development of this new game is now up and running at http://daishogame.wordpress.com

The first of a regular series of posts reflecting the trials and tribulations of the design process has just been posted. Charles and I are always interested in hearing people's opinions of our efforts.  :D

Will this be published by Osprey as well?

No it shall not. Osprey already has Ronin in its stable, so we shall be seeking another route to publication and are currently examining a number of options.

Good luck with it mate. Like the idea. Going to produce a model range to or is it a pure rules endeavour?

We were very lucky with In Her Majesty's Name that Nick at Northstar Miniatures took the risk of producing miniatures for a few of the companies. Even flat out he couldn't cover a tenth of the companies in the three books and on the blog, never mind all the very clever companies created by the players. And there is more in the pipeline.

At this time Daisho has no associated figure deal and, if I am to be honest, I'm not sure it needs one. Being tied to a single miniatures range can restrict a game as the development lead-time for figures is often much slower than for print. Northstar chose to produce figures for companies it felt were artistically interesting and that were different from what was already available on the market.

There are currently at least a dozen excellent companies out there producing Samurai Japanese figures in a common 25-28mm scale. About a third of them are also producing fantasy Japanese figures as well. I don't think we shall be short of figures to play with. I think that it is important that players have the freedom to select and paint figures that suit their vision of the game.

All this being said, if a miniatures company wishes to step up and produce a few figures or even whole Buntai for the game we'd be happy to discuss this with them  :D

That's totally understandable. Just hope there is at least one option out there for each unit type you have. Cp models will likley be a great place for cheap mythical Japanese creatures. The kensei ones are nice but about 5 times the price.

Any hints on the buntai you are planning?

it seems we have an early vote for Ikkō-ikki. Anybody else like revolting peasants?

Well, if you wanted to extend it to Mythical China we do a whole range of figures and people have been asking for a ruleset...

No they are revolting.

Ikko ikki sound good. Some great models for them at Perrys too. Not to mention you could add a few samurai in there ranks to if one wished. Depending on how you write them though.

What a spiffing idea!  Once we have got this one published that could well be a contender for a supplement.

this might sound an odd question but i think it slightly makes sense to me  Hypno

how are the units clans going to stand out from one another ? will each clan have there own unique talents and ability's ?

how is a samurai from the Oda clan going to differ from the Shimazu clan, till the Takeda Clan be able to have better mounted samurai from the rest

and will religion make a difference will a christian samurai be different to a Shinto samurai

What a simply marvellous question - arigato!

We have not addressed this yet, but it is something I shall discuss with Charles. I expect it will be through the selection of options from the Bushi Buntai list, thus allowing you to select the options that best represent the clan you wish to emulate.

As for religion that again is up for discussion.

Set2121, while you are about it, would you like to suggest some clan variants? I'm happy for others to chime in also  :D

I think being able to pick out certain traits and skills that fit the theme of your chosen clan is better than having set clans with certain skills to choose from. So for example instead of having the oda clan have quicker reloads on teppo for example just allow people who want to play the oda clan take quicker reloads for their teppo.

the question came from me playing shogun 2 all the clans have the same units but all have different strengths to play to http://totalwar.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Shogun_II:_Total_War_Factions

An interesting source there, and actually moderately accurate.

I am currently researching the Sōhei as it is one of the companies I shall be writing. I really like the thought of warrior-monks cracking skulls and taking names :)

In the latest issue of Daishō Design Notes we discuss how we shall classify the various iconic swords of the period.
