I've been painting up a few Mobile Suits for a demo game at the Plastic Model Expo in Melbourne in June. I found some rules for them years ago online that convert 3rd Ed 40K and they play ok. I figure the Gundam modelers could get a kick out of it.

GM in Space Combat Colours, nice and dirty from seeing action on the ground.

Zaku II from a desert battlegroup.

Zaku II Command Type with a Beam Lance.
I'm hoping to have 6 Mobile Suits done for the game, I'm painting a GM Sniper at the moment, then I'll do a RX-78 and a Gouf Custom. I have more waiting for paint, but I don't think that they'll be done in time.
-
While not a big Gundam fan (much more into Macross/VOTOMS) I always like seeing some mecha painted up. Lovely stuff.
-
Very nice. I started a Gundam gaming project some years ago, but didn't really make anything of it (except for a couple of Zakus and amphibious units, but now I found that a reasonably-local store stocks Tomica 1/150 building kits - pricey, but great for any 10mm/144 modern/near future stuff, and most cities in (UC) Gundam look late-20th century, anyway.
Judging from the poses, are those the old (1970s-80s) kits? Bit of a pain to get those looking right. I definitely prefer the new HGUC offerings, especially if you can order them directly from HLJ without some of the more ridiculous markups some importers demand.
-
The GM is an older kit, the Zakus newer kits, all from HLJ. They're the LG (Low Grade) 1/144 kits, which are cheaper and easier to deal with than the much nicer HG (High Grade). As they'll be used for gaming rather than display, the quality isn't such a big deal to me.
-
Excellent stuff. I have a few 1/144 Gundams, but for now I'll be exploring the SD range a bit.
What's in store next for this project?
-
The GM Sniper is almost done, then another Zaku before I finish with the RX-78.
Down the track there may be more, but not anytime soon.
-
Excellent choices. I would recommend the Gelgoog and the Gun Tank for being awesome.
And WHO doesn't want a Dom? :)
-
I already have a Gelgoog, a Gouf and a couple more RX-78s, I'd love a Dom, Guntank, Guncannon, Gogg, Z-Gock and a couple of EZ-8's, but they don't come up often in the 1/144 LG on HLJ.
-
Have you seen the Gundam STANDart
http://www.bandai.co.jp/candy/gundam/standart/
or the Gundam Assault Kingdom lin?
http://www.bandai.co.jp/candy/gundam/assaultKingdom/
Found them when DZT showed off his new Gundam Converge on TMP. I got one STANDart and two Assault Kingdom Gundams looking for the Converge ones at Barns and Nobles. I haven't popped them from their boxes yet but the size of the boxes make me think that possibly they could be as of use to you.

What's the scale on those? They look great.
-
The Assault Kingdom minis are a lot smaller - the Z'Gok I have from Release 4 is about 8cm tall (compared to the 13-ish cm of the 1/144 kits).
Weirdly, I've just finished a trio of Zaku 1 snipers to use as mecha in scifi games at 28mm. Must be something about the Zaku...
They're my first Gundam, and I'm ridiculously pleased by them. I went for the High Grade kits, so they took about an hour each to build. For £13 each, direct from Japan, you get a fully articulated 5" model in coloured plastic. They go together like a dream too.
Still got to weather them, which I may get round to some time in the summer. I'd be happy putting them on my table now though.

I haven't opened mine as i was planning on taking them back. But being about 8cm or a bit over 3in i may change my mind. I am also having an issue on how with what to use a Z'Gok as well.

Just to keep it all straight. The Zaku 1 snipers you refer to, they from the Assault Kingdom line or another line? If another which line? And yes, there is something about a Zaku kit.

Indeed. The Zaku is very iconic. Often I find the Zeon Mobile Suits more... hmm.. stylish, compared to the Federation ones.

Sorry my mistake - Bandai 1/144 Zaku snipers. This one:

Since our chat this morning, I'm back home to complete some work here - I'll get some pics to you tomorrow Grim, and put in the Z'gok too... and my only other Gundam, a super-deformed Asshimar.
Oh and Hat Guy? Nice models!
-
Finished this last night:

GM Sniper.
I've considered the collectible figures and action figures in the past for this project as they look a bit nicer, but I've never found a good supplier for either.

Some pics of my Gundam - not to take away from Hat Guy's nice work, but for scale comparison. A pin wash or some ink in the details is needed, and I need to weather them. The great thing about the kits is that they pull apart to put some matt varnish on each piece individually.
First up, three Zaku 1 Snipers:

For Grimnar, compared with the Assault Kingdom Z'Gok:

Last one, this time comparing against 28mm figs - Old Crow light tank, GW Space Marine, Dreamforge Eisenkern and AT-43 Fire Toad. And my SD Asshimar:

Yeah man, start your own thread so we can stop being jerks to HatGuy.

Well damn you. Cause of these i had to stop in and get a few AK Z'Goks.
Can you show a Z'Gok with a 15mm fig? Just send to me.
Finished another Zaku II:
I look at this Zaku and his little gun compared to the snipers above and think isn't his little peashooter so cute?
I like it. Zaku is always an iconic Gundam. Looking good. Going to need to get about another 30 or so done so you can do a proper battle. :-)

What can I say - I'm a bad man :D At least Hat Guy's are painted!
If I had any 15mm minis, Grim, I would surely send you a pic of one...
And the Zaku Snipers also come with those "peashooters" as an alternative weapon.
-
Looks great.
Funny thing is, that those "peashooters" actually are fully Automatic 120mm cannons.
Says a Little about the scale.
-
Yeah 1/144 equates roughly to 10-12mm in Wargames scale, these things are meant to be big. Good thing I don't have a Galloop or Big Ro.
-

I just bought two more Zgok's cause of you, least you can do is buy some 15mm comparison figs. :-)

No mate, I just got you hooked. Now you have to provide pics and a game report lol

I was always hooked.
I had already bought others from the line. BUT if we are assigning blame it goes to Dropzonetoe who listed the Gundam Converge over on TMP a couple of weeks ago. W/O that i would have never looked further or asked the questions i did on the Gundams here. But i still blame you.
I still dont know what to do with the ZGok's. There is a scifi race that resembles this mecha design just cant recall who it is.
As for pics and a battle report? How about ya poop in one hand and wait for that report in the other and see which gets filled up first. ;-)

Finished the last Gundam for Sunday's demo game:

RX-78
This thing is a beast in the game, the only time I ever killed with was with a Gouf specifically built to tear it apart.
-
Very nice Zakus, I like them.
Which rules are you using?
-
It's called Mobile Suit Gundam Battle System, I found it on the web years ago. Basically a conversion for 3rd ed 40K, but it plays quite well.
-
Looking good. Do remeber some Photos sunday. :)
-
Darn, look what you made me do! I went online and ordered a pile of Assault Kingdom models...
I'll have to look into the rules... or maybe I'll just adopt Lightning Strike rules, I find them the best mecha rules I've seen so far, only let down by lack of construction rules.

What is your source for those who may be looking to follow suit. :-)

I tried HLJ first, but they didn't really have anything left.
Then I went to eBay and these are still widely available. Sometimes they are sold as singles, sometimes in packs of four.
Just type "Assault Kingdom" in eBay search.

OH i am aware. It is what i am doing right now to track down some Converge models.
Just wanted to check to make sure you didn't have another source people didn't know about or think of is all.
Be sure to populate this thread with appropriate pics of the subject matter once you get going.

Will do.
Meanwhile, you might get a kick out of this:

Unfortunately those MS in Action figures are getting hard to get these days. I got a bunch for a song when HLJ was clearing them off...
