Very nice, wish I could get round to painting mine. Inspired. THE CID.
-
Great work so far...a nice start! :D
-
Really like the skin tones on the New Zealanders! Very nice indeed
-
When you do nice paint jobs like that ,it makes me want to watch "Utu",again and impulse buy, darn your work.
-
Great stuff Karl. You have been productive!
-
Lookin Good ;D
-
Ka pai! Well done!
I really like the decorative work on the Maoris' clothing.
-
Many thanks all, As said really enjoyed painting these figures. I have given up on the Moko tattoos as just dont look right no matter what (linked more to my poor brushwork and the pens being harder to use than a brush)
I have enjoyed Arteis painting the designs though can be a challenge. Must say your blog and Bjeorns have kept my interest and inspired me no end :D
Being a megalomaniac when I start project (not always finish them mind you) my plans include;
50 British regulars from the 58th
20 British regulars (using Ist Corp here for a little variety from 99th)
2 10 man units of milita (sappers and those in slouch hats on order)
2 rocket tubes one Empress and the other from Perry range to be Royal Marine team
Royal Navy detachment (havent ordered the cannon as yet)
12 settler volunteers, mix of empress and Perry civilians plus the ladies fromm Empress
Maori I have 80+ maori on the lead pile to be broken down into 8 Hapu plus leaders and the cannon.
I am planning on building a Pa for the Brits to assault
-
I particularly like the Maoris. Sounds like there is a lot more to come, which is great news.
-
Really nice work so far, good luck with the project mate.....I gather you are a kiwi too?
-
Ha, not unless they say "Why-aye, pet" down in Kiwi-land these days. :)

Rofl, Poly is right, not I am a Brit way up on Hadrians wall, though over the years been very keen on New Zealnd wars and had to bite the bullet ;D :D
There must be Geordie Haka somewhere poly ;D for non-brits Geordie come from the tyne and it is the dialect that sets us apart from others ;)

Great project.
-
Cheers Doc, just finishing off some Brits, a painful lesson I never learn which lsows down -painting is never start 30 figures at once ;D
even in uniforms of the same ilk I lose interest time and time again so have split them into 10 figure groups and finally got first 10 done :D
-
very smart Karl :D

Great pjs Karl 8)
When do we get to see the terrain? :D
-
Cheers Gents,
On terrain will be a little while need a few more figures painted. I have the foamboard and the wood for the fencing but have gotten a little waylaid with some 4 ground samurai houses ;D
-
Great stuff :)
-
They look great. Ten is a much more manageable number than thirty, I wouldn't even consider working on that many at once.
-
Looking good Karl :)
-
Second unit done now, third almost ready too :)
I have 20 more Maori ready to paint with a few weapon swap outs for a little variety, used the GB axes to replace some clubs etc loo ok too

Quite a good read, fictional takes you through the 1839-1880s through eyes of a settler, quite balanced and not often you can find fiction on the subject and £3.49 on kindle would be rude not to :D

Painting large units can really drag on... lol Looks like you are closing in on the finish though. Great looking units.

Still 20 more of the british to do and another 20 from 1st Corps for a bit of variety ;D but learnt lesson, no more than 10 at a time :D
-
:-* Excellent job sir.
Also a brilliant example of a meglamaniac at work lol
-
Dear God, you are a painting machine, man! ;)
-
Many thanks Gents, the megalomania hasn`t held sway for many an age, time to let the urge dictate ;D. Cap`n , taken a while for these but managed to finish them all off in short time, thanks in no small part to the bad weather lol

While waiting for the oil wash to dry on the Maori flesh thought I would map out the Maori Pa. I think it shoud work but the proof will be in the pudding. But think it should shape up ok ;D
Poor piccy owing to being in the garage, insulation foam is about 4ft by 2.5ft :D

It's OK, you can make out the basic plan.
BTW, are you going to be at the Durham show this weekend? I'll be there, probably hovering between Dave T's stand and the game put on by the Grimsby chaps.
Darrell.

I think I am popping along with Paleskin as we are only in North Shields :)
Having looked at the plan this morning I may pull it back form the edges as want to taper them and think got a little carried away so would leave one hell of an escarpment as it is :)
cheers

If I may be so bold as to say that it would be great as a centre piece on the tabletop so don't scale it back too much, would be my advice anyway :).
See you at the show..... I look like the pic at the bottom of this post- try not to laugh- I'm being brave!

It's all really starting to come together now, isn't it?
Seeing them painted up makes me want to get a couple of these. Only ever painted 15mm Maoris, so I'd like to try my hand at the big ones.
-

It certainly is! :-* :-* :-*
Great to meet you the other day at the Durham Show Karl 8).

That is fantastic work! They look superb. Kapai!

-
Cheers gents,
I have had an odd false start but now into the swing of things, I had to abandon my Moko tattoos simply through lack of skills but dont think they suffer too much.
They are lovely figures and Poly I would certainly advise getting the odd pack to have a bash play with :)
I still have another 40 or so Maori to go so am thinking about a few trade shawls and have a go at more weapon sap outs, the axes were very easy to do and look pretty good to add variety over the range.
Darrel, sorry about catching you mid Sarnie and also in the middle of a lead deal ;)
-
Impressive. You are not hanging around with this one are you? 8)
-
Impressive. You are not hanging around with this one are you? 8)
Really loving it, I have a pile of lead but for once not seeing it as a pile of lead ;D more a list of targets to work through each forming a unit, scenario in my head, quite enthusing :D
-
BOOK ALERT
Saw this on ebay, cheap (at present) copy of to face the daring Maori, a cracking read of the Flagstaff war from diaries and reports, a real page turner for the period. My copy cost £20 so you can see the deal ;)

That book is thoroughly recommended, and is probably one of the best reads for anyone doing this period.

While I have you ;D I know the unfiorm for Marines was similar to the Brits but was wondering if the Perry BAL range in forage caps or those with small peaks may double up?
I cannot for the life of me find any reference to their uniform in pictures?
-
Darrel, sorry about catching you mid Sarnie and also in the middle of a lead deal ;)
That 'sarnie' was like eating through ten sheets of cardboard! lol
The NWF miniatures made up for that :D.
Sorry I wasn't able to talk more but three folk that I was supposed to meet from various fora turned up all at once!! :o :D
Nice to meet you anyway, I know who to look out for now :D :D
Darrell.

Militia unit finished, painted the 4 newer in slouch hats and the pioneers

Do I spy some 1st corps?
-
Do I spy some 1st corps?
You do, I picked up around 50 of their Cape wars range and hae been converting them with head swaps. To officer in shirt sleeves is perfect as a militia officer in his pork pie hat :D the other has a perry carlist head chop and is a subaltern :)
-
How do they stack scale wise against the empress stuff? I heard it's a bit small which is a shame as the command officers are especially good.
Also funnily enough i've had a similar thought for the militia officer, even using that miniature from 1st corps after reading a series of colonial battle articles in Wargames illustrated, always though the militia need their own command set in more casual clothes.
-
They are smaller, but I am keeping them in separate units. I have used Tam Oshanter heads on the 1st corps minis which actually make them fit a little better too
will try and get a photo up so you can see what I mean
-
top work Karl! :D

Those are beautiful, and have given me some inspiration.i may have missed it but who makes the Maori miniatures ?

They're by Empress.

Thanks :)
-
Many thanks gents, I enjoyed painting these. Patterns on skirts were a little challenging to get variety but not overly so.
I had fun with some head and weapon swaps which were very easy on these but must admit the last 16 were a real chore. Saturday sees the whole Hapu in battle ;Dk

Wow! That's a lot of Maori!!!
And there was me thinking that I could convert the 1840's range to be more 1860's to go with the Perry BIF stuff!! Maybe later.......

They'll be perfect for your force. And it is a growing range. Though of course you'll need access to a 3D printer to print them out from the files.

They are lovely and nice and easy to paint. I have the cannon and rocket crews and they are beauties too, some could be used as generic Tars with no weapons, I think they should package them separately as they could be used for other periods or as ships crew

More great progress 8)
