Title: SD Gundam Offline
Post by: Jaeger on May 19, 2014, 02:53:30 PM
I've been a Mecha junkie for as long as I can remember. Battletech, Robotech, Votoms and the list goes on and on. In resent years I've grown fund of the Gundam Mobile Suits and the stories from that Univers.

While researching the possibilities of making my own game using gundam models, I came across an online game called SD Gundam Capsule Fighter Online:

http://sdgo.ogplanet.com/en/main.og

I fell head over heals in love with the little SD (Super Deformed) suits and wanted to explore that road instead of the 1/144 models I started collecting.

Trwling ebay I found a host of SD Gundam models, but often the scale (within the same range) was widely different from each other, but finally I came across the Gashapon Next line:

(http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTU5WDYzOA==/z/PvAAAOxyNDhSYWfu/$(KGrHqN,!qsFJgVksmNQBSYWftyPkw~~60_12.JPG)

I've started to put together a ruleset, that suits my needs and hopefully captures the essence of Gundam and Gundam Capsule Fighter Online.

The rules are based on a mix of X-Wing and more traditional wargames. The Mobile suits will be using Square bases like this:

I've created a unit Card for a Zaku II Mobile Suit for starters:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/BelialPhoto001/ZakuIIGundam_zps753700c3.png) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/BelialPhoto001/ZakuIIGundam_zps753700c3.png.html)

P:Piloting Skill
A: Attack
D: Defense
H: Hull Points
M: Movement Points

Piloting Skill determines order of movement, actions  and shooting as in X-Wing.

Attack is the number of dice (D6) used to attack.

Modifiers:
Target in Left/Right side arc: -1D
Attacking target Rear: +1D
Attacking at optimal range: +1D (1 range band fra optimal er normalt, 2 range bands fra optimal er -1D - der findes Close/Medium/Long range bands)
Target Obscured: -1D

Defence is the number of Dice (D6) used defend against enenmy attack.

Hull Points is the number of damage points the unit can sustain before being destroyed.

Movement point is the number of points the unit can spend on moving around the battlefield:

Forward move up to 3" = 1MP
Turn up to 90 degrees = 1 MP
Rear/Side move up 3" = 1 MP
Boost across obstacle up to 3" (forward move only) = 2MP

Fighter Type (the fist NeXT to the Mobile suit Picture) is used to determine what range is optimal for that particular mobile suit. Fist is Close range, Scissors is Medium range and paper is long range.

A Zaku II is an older serial produced mobile suit, so it will more or less be the least effective mobile suit. In comparison a RX78-2 Gundam will have Att:4 og Def:4 wich is really good, but in the low end of the more powerfull gundams.

Add to this a host of skills, actions, wargear and perhaps event Cards/markers and off we go. :-)

Stay tuned for more.

Cool stuff :)

I like the SD Gundams as well :D

They're a bit of an aquired taste. Some love them, some think they're silly.

I've added some Black lining to one of my Zakus:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/BelialPhoto001/SDGundamNext3_zps0429a770.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/BelialPhoto001/SDGundamNext3_zps0429a770.jpg.html)

Picks out the details and make the model a lot cooler imo. I've ordered a bunch of N-Scale Buildings for scenary. It might not fit they scale perfectly, but that's the beauty of SD models. They don't really have a proper scale.

Lining in black, or even a few other colours if you want to go really advance can very much improve the look of a regular gundam figure that much I know. Hadn't even thought about it also applying to gashapon SD's.

I was under the impression that the SD model kits were in the same scale with eachother?
Title: Re: SD Gundam Offline
Post by: Jaeger on May 19, 2014, 06:35:35 PM
Sadly no. The Next models are a bit bigger than other Gashapon ones.

And I originally started collecting the G-range (not Gashapon) and to my horror I soon dicovered that the difference in size was... well... quite substational.

Here's a Gundam and a Gelgoog not only from the same range, but also from the same set:

I'm not picky usually, but that didn't sit right with me.

This'll be good I'm sure.

Yep. Fingers crossed I have the stamina to see this one through.  ;)

I finally got a big bag of Square 40mm bases, so my Mobile Suit are getting ready to deploy:

Very cool, I've always had a soft-spot for SD/deformed stuff...(yes, mainly Robotech).  I'm not a huge Gundam fan but that game could be a riot.  Looks like it could be a fun convention game as well.

Brilliant.  I bought a load of train scenery to use for monster gaming.  It looks very nice.

@Elbows: Yep. I'm hoping to turn this into a convention game. It should be fairly easy to learn and should be played in a relative short time period.

@Dr. The Viking: Brilliant use for the railroad houses too. :-)

I got a few more houses and added a Little of my generic terrain for some better Pictures:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/BelialPhoto001/GTerrain1_zps5d9cce5c.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/BelialPhoto001/GTerrain1_zps5d9cce5c.jpg.html)

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/BelialPhoto/BelialPhoto001/GTerrain2_zps702fde58.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/BelialPhoto/media/BelialPhoto001/GTerrain2_zps702fde58.jpg.html)

I'm still working on the game mechanics as Movement planning is a pretty big part of X-wing and I have excluded it in my game. Could be a huge advantage for the High Piloting skill models, and I'm still contemplating have to balance this.

Looks nice!

I got a big bunch of Gashapons (not SD ones though) thinking I'd build a game around them, but the selection is a bit problematic. Since Gundam is the hero of the show, you get piles and piles of them and way too few "basic" MS like Zakus or GMs. There's also a high percentage of goofy close combat weapons instead of good old beam guns.

Too many chiefs and too few indians...

Besides, I stll haven't built that supercarrier they are supposed to fight on...

Ugh, I feel your pain Maxxon --- absolutely hate when toy lines do that (though it kinda/sorta makes sense I'm sure from a business perspective).  Robotech and Votoms are both examples - impossible to find bad guy models/figures, but there are bajillions of "good guys".  Annoying indeed!

Such a shame about the unbalanced model ranges...

Fortunately the Danish customs system "helps me out".

There's a maximum of about 15 US dollars before you pay an enormous fee. Not for Toll or VAT mind you, but an extra fee for Danish Post collecting these small amounts (outside EU only and I get mine mostly from China/Hong Kong).

Therefore I seldomly buy more than 1 at a time. I think they cost me about 5-6 US dollars each with freight included.

So I usually pick and choose from the ones I like and try to get a good mix of Federation and Zeon forces (and the other factions you encounter later on).

Mind you. The game will be constructed, so you can mix your force in any way you want, regardless of time era and faction. This does mean that the 5th generation Gundams such as the Qan (T) will be a real beast and take the coordinated assault of many lesser mobile suit to strike Down.

Should one wish to play "historical" forces, one can always choose to do so.

More on rules:

Game Round:

Start Phase
- Priority Roll

Movement Phase
- Models move in ascending order of pilot skill

Action Phase
- Place Action Counter face Down and reveal when all have been placed (replaces the fog of war element from the movement phase when compared to X-Wing).

Combat Phase
- Models attack in decending order of pilot skill

End Phase
- Remove action tokens
- Each model recover from stun. Remove D3 Stun results if any. Remaining Stun results carry over to next game round.

More on Actions og skills:

Each Mobile Suit has 3-4 "skills", which can be split in the following categories:

Action (A), Damage dependant (D) og Natural (N)

Action Skills are used in the action phase. Damage Dependant skills are activated when the mobile suit loses hull points and keep working until the Mobile Suit is destroyed. Natural are skils that Work all the time.

Examples of Action Skills:

Attack Up: +1 A (Attack)
Defense Up: +1 D (Defense)
Reload Up: +2 P (piloting)
Mobility Up: Make an additional move of 1MP

Examples of Damage Dependant skills:
NewType Awakening: +1 MP
The Red Comet: +1 P, +1 MP
Neo Zeon Fighting Spirit: +1 P, +1 A, +1 MP

Examples of Natural Skills:

Veteran Infighter: +1 D vs. Long Range Attacks
Veteran Ranger: +1 D vs. Close Range Attacks

In addition there will be a few generic skills that all Mobile suits can choose to use:

Target Lock: Re-roll 1 Attack Dice
Evade: Re-roll 1 Defense Dice

I also just won an ebay auction on a Gundam Converge model (Gundam Ground Type). I might change my Next models to these in the future if I like them:

I am loving this thread  :-*

Such great little models and paint work (simple but very effective).

I have a single SD Gundam, a little Zaku but I didn't fully assemble him (I just wanted to keep him simple):

Reading through this thread and seeing the pics is making it very hard not to be tempted by yet another project :)

True. Quite true.  :)

A Little more on the rules:

Critical Hits

6 Direct Hit: -1 Additional Hull Point
5 Damaged Sensors: Cannot perform Actions
4 Structural Damage: -1 D
3 Weapon Damage: -1 A
2 Pilot Injured: -1 P
1 Engine Damaged: -1 MP

Piloting skill:

Will range from 1 to 4. 4 Being the best.

Unlike X-wing I'll try an alternate system where you take turns moving/shooting mobile suits within the Piloting Skill step.

F.ex:

Player A has 2 Mobile Suits with PS 4 and player B has 1. It's the Shooting Phase, so highest PS shoots first (moves last in the movement phase).

Player B won the priority roll off in the start phase (also differs from X-Wing where Imperial has priority on a tie (pun not intended  ;) ).

So player B gets to shoot first with his Mobile Suit. Then Player A gets to shoot with both his PS 4 Mobile Suits before PS 3 Mobile Suits gets to shoot.

If player B had 2 PS 4 mobile suits it would be: Player B, Player A, Player B, Player A and then PS 3 step.

Hope it makes sense.

I'm affraid I can't take much credit for them, as they are put together from various images from the net. But still. It makes the game much nicer as you say.

Oh I know, but you managed to get a consistent styling going. And small but simple flourishes like the silhouettes really add something beyond stat cards with plain numbers and text.

Ah good. Just wanted to make sure, that people didn't think I was taking vredit for something that wasn't mine.

On the miniature side I'm pretty psyched by the NeXT release (No. 21 series):

I have all the stats ready for them, as they're in the SDGO game and the Card game that I use for reference.

Expecially the Ez-8, the Gouf and the Magella Attack tank will be very nice additions.

I'm still scouring ebay to find the special set with the Neue Ziel and Dendrobium, but havn't found any that I can afford atm.

He, he. Naaah.  :D

Actually the SDGO game is phasing the rock/scissors/paper system out, and in my game they only mean close, medium and long range. Thought it would look more cool than just C, M and L.

I do have plans for Wargear Cards where one Card allows a Mobile Suit to change Archtype (nasty surprice to find your disadvantaged long range opponent suddenly turn into a close range fighter).

And thanks. :)

How on Earth do you find the time!

Looks clever although I must admit that I have no idea about the rules.  lol

Thanks. Well for once I don't have to build and paint the miniatures (although a good painter could prob. do Wonders with them), so that frees up my time for some rules design. :)

The rules may seem complicated, but they are quite easy to learn and should generate a wide variety of choices.

I'm guessing it's the kind of game, that's easy to learn but hard to master. And there's a high degree of luck involved and bluff, but that's intended, so it doesn't end up as an extended math assignment (as 40K imo is turning into resently).

I'm currently working on the last translations into English so stay tuned.

This WILL be my contribution to the next Horisont Con (it is comming this fall right Dr. The Viking?).

AGE-3, Physalis, Zephyranthes, Astray Red Frame og Strike Noir.

And I'm working on a way to do away with the massive amount of counters:
