Following in my normal tradition of never finishing anything I have moved on to building something for my multitude of pirates..............a few of whom are shown in this old thread;

Foamcard, lolly sticks, blood and not a little swearing so far..........

Looking great, nice design. I like the Gladius as well ;)
-
Must come in handy for those long hours of slicing up foamcore!
-
Very nice start!
-
Looks like it will be an interesting building :)
Looking forward to seeing that come together...
-
I'm working it on an 'as you go' basis.....not the best idea as I am spending time gluing new bits to walls that should really have been part of the original plan. Everything will be covered in filler of some sort at some point so not a visual problem (hopefully) but it would have saved a lot of time if I'd planned it!
-
but it would have saved a lot of time if I'd planned it!
There's no fun it that! lol
-
Looking great :D
-
I'm working it on an 'as you go' basis.....
Don't do that - hurry and get it done as I want to see the finish product!
-
This is looking very promising already.
-
One chimney added and part of the 4 sides of the 'tower'. I detailed the chimney for both floors but can't see it having a useable ground floor....back to the planning stages on thursday when off although the children are on hols so time is somewhat limited >:(

Fireplaces being made up as I go along............

Remind me never to stay in any building you've had any involvement in constructing! Now that is an adventure, building without planning. Do want to see it finished though, so "steady as you go" helmsman.
or, never let sleeping dragons lie...is that the quote?

Looking great 8)

it's gonna be ace ;)
-
Couple more pics including an attempt at wall stucco or similar.....mainly addition of the other chimney details and lots of filling and sanding....lots :-[

Just tried a section of the wall for now and will probably just do the other side of the corner and the chimney and then contemplate doing more.....
-
looking brill...love the fireplaces
-
2 small updates.......a wood store and the start of pillars added to the entrance.

-
Looking good so far. Whats the model you are using for scale btw.
-
Cheers. The one just posted is an old Westwind 7 Seas pirate (I think that was the name of the range, fantasy pirates). The undead chap is a oldish Reaper one.
-
Looking really good and have no doubt it will be excellent when finished....meanwhile I am enjoying your "plan it as you go" style of building....something I can relate to
-
outstanding... plans are for wussies....
-
Couple more pics...some work done on the entrance, I've filled all the edges around windows, door etc and started on the roofing structure. Ordered some half round channelling for the pantiled roofs but got the wrong size so waiting for another order to arrive >:(

looking good..
-
Well done so far. :o
Keep up the good work.
Cheers

Really nice work!
-
Really nice work! what are you using for the wood?
-
Lolly sticks. Got a bag of 1000 a couple of years back for another project....perfect for almost everything.
-
It's going to be mega! :)

Lolly sticks. Got a bag of 1000 a couple of years back for another project....perfect for almost everything.
I had to work with lolly sticks to build my repeating crossbow (http://www.thelazyforger.com/tutorials/building-a-repeating-crossbow/), but sometimes using balsa is much quicker and leads to better results.
Lolly sticks have all the same whidth, which is really practical, but they have to be cut on both ends, and cutting that wood is much harder than working with balsa... that's more expensive, but with 5$ you're probably going to have enough for the whole building plus something! :)
Cheers

I started using the sticks and kind of got in the habit....I did a 'hardwood' floor for a dining room game and after 4 coats of varnish it really looked the part. It also gives it a lot of strength. I use a pair of snips to cut the so that is easy enough. The roof part I have no made is nicely uneven as I planned it to be but the pantile plastic rod has arrived and I have no idea how I am going to do it!
-
Well, I've just spent 20 minutes fiddling around attempting to make pantiled sections out of the plastic rod I bought......back to the drawing board.......the rods are over round and too thick. This is becoming an expensive build :(
-
Roofing tiles using plastic straws.....oh this is fiddly.... >:(
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt198/TheDozingDragon/Pirates/DSC04342.jpg)
-
you are a very brave man - how long did that roof take !
Just hope the paint sticks
-
Too long! Only done 2 sides......just started the third. Very therapeutic I suppose..... I will probably give it a thinned pva coat eventually then rough up with fine emery board........if it works then I have all the other roofs to do.... unless they also captured a cargo of slate which would make it easier :D
-
Roofing tiles using plastic straws.....oh this is fiddly.... >:(
If it's easy, it ain't worth doing ;)
It'll be worth it when it's done :)
-
Roofing tiles using plastic straws.....oh this is fiddly.... >:(
that look fabulous!
However, from my experience the paint simply doesn't stick on those! :( Probably with an aggresive primering that might work!
by the way, I'm currently planning to do some resin roofing with that style, using some more thick materials and casting them in rows!
-
Roofing tiles using plastic straws.....oh this is fiddly....
Top points for ingenuity and round of applause for determination.....wouldn't bother with pva...personally would head off to local car paint emporium and get a can of spray etch primer for plastic - that should do it for you....however you decide to go colour me well and truly impressed
-
spray etch primer for plastic
Good idea.....off to the shops shortly anyway....
-
If nothing else works, a gesso primer might be worth giving a try as well.
-
That's a damn fine looking building. Can't wait to see the end result.
-
Only looks like a small update but it's taken a lot of time and use of profanities.....one more edge ot do then the 'mortaring' can begin......
A couple of finished pirates for the time being though..............
I'd tried for piercing blue eyes for this one...not quite managed it :-[
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt198/TheDozingDragon/Pirates/DSC04387.jpg)
-
Why not use cardboard with one side of the backing removed? You can cut it into strips for the pantiles, and then use straws to hide the joints.
-
I'd thought along those lines but wanted overlapping tiles.....this is a labor of love that has now become the 8th task of Hercules...........
-
Well....the tower roof is just about finished. Problem is the plastic straw pieces do not adhere to the pva or the filler.....I have the etch primer and the gesso ready for once I've cleaned it up......the brass weather vane looks the part but I think will be too flimsy to last..I have the Thomarillon one on the way. Thanks to everyone so far for the ideas! The thought of a removable roof on the small slope has gone.....I certainly need a different method for the slopes. No corners will be a blessing though....
A quick shot of the latest additions to the crew....need to get them done before the Northstar ones arrive!
-
Some nice pirates there!
However, i strongly suggest you to do some experiments on some roofing samples before painting the big one. Considering the hours spent to make it, it would be a real pain to see the paint peeling off! :S
-
Finally finished construction of that d****d roof....etch spray and gesso primer......now the first flat roof. For the main removable roof sections I will try making a section mold......eek!
You can just about make out the lopsided weather vane.........

-
Looking blimmin' brilliant!
-
Nice one. :-*
Looking very good so far.
-
Yeah, looks great. :)
-
Stick with the straws the effect is well worth it. If i get this right attached is a picture of my 40mm pirate game over 7000 tiles and 6 months work o_o
-
I am not worthy :o
-
I dont know about that you are already on the path to madness ! lol BUSTED.
-
Nice work Dave.Getting there eventually.
-
Nothing on the building but a captain and 3 lackeys...........lighting has bleached them a little.....

-
Nice brushwork :)
-
I've got those three lackeys in my pirate band too :)
Jolly nice painting.
-
Great painting and I'm loving the build!
-
3 more to the rescue.........one Ron & Bones (now oop), one Foundry and a Tercio Creativo...more pics etc on the blog as usual...

a Ron & Bones comparison with Foundry......I think of someone 'normal' sized standing next to some of the WWF wrestlers and the difference doesn't seem too unusual......
