Title: Late War WWI Germans & British - 10mm
Post by: fred on May 26, 2014, 10:36:07 AM
I've not bored you chaps with my WWI project yet - so here you go with the first 2/3rds of my German 1917+ forces

I am aiming to have a GWSH Division, so 3 infantry regiments, artillery, and various support elements. Above are two infantry regiments, lots of artillery and some support elements.

The 3rd regiment is purchased and ready to go, I need to construct a few heavy mineworkers, and I'm sure a few extra bits will be 'needed' especially from Pendraken's new releases.

Infantry Regiment, HQ, 12 bases of infantry, 3 MG08s and 7.7cm minenwerfer

Stosstruppen company - with camouflaged helmets

Some pioneers - using the very handy FPW digging figures

7.7cm field guns with funky blue splinter camo - this design may be a touch early but it looks too cool to ignore

Another regiment of 7.7s this time in more typical 3 tone camo

Thanks for looking.

Decide to add the start of my British forces here, rather than start another thread.

Most of my British troops are still in bags
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-CrjgpnNks0k/UvvikBumDBI/AAAAAAAACRo/J42nQEhAFyY/s1152/photo.JPG)

A few infantry have made it on to painting sticks - but no photos as they just look like brown blobs on black sticks!

And the tanks have actually had a fair bit of paint added to them

A Mark V, finished a little while ago

A couple of friends just based up
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-urLgXD-j7CI/U449eHa28II/AAAAAAAACxI/tGCC5_ljUag/s1152/photo%25201.JPG)

And 3 Whippets, blocked painted and based.

I'm thinking of adding some brass rod MGs to these.

Worked on the Whippets this evening - gone for an attempt at shading, by painting in the panels with two further shades, each covering a slightly smaller area. Interested in some feedback on how will this has worked (or not!)

Just some quick photos with flash.

Still need a bit of finishing off around the markings, and some mud and rust

I'll continue talking to myself, as it seems at least some of you are reading this, even if not replying  :'(

Took some photos of the finished tanks - not the best pictures, even after taking the time to set up the light tent, as the sun decided to go in when I went to take the photos, and I couldn't be bothered to get the tripod.  :(

These show up a few issues with the orange wash used for rust, and a bit of chipping!!

Nice paint work.  Like the camo on the arty guns and helmets...impressive considering the tiny surface areas involved.   Tanks look fine to me.   :)

Thanks Dr Pete - the guns were good fun to research and paint. I think becaus of all the B&W photos WWI is normally perceived  as grey and drab, but it is surprising just how colourful some of the camo schemed were.

Yes, these photos of the Whippets are OK, I was disappointed in just how few of the many I had taken looked good.

Dear Fred,

What basing system are you using? and why?

I am doing a very similar project, also using Pendraken late War German and British.
So far, I have 60 infantry, 3 HMG, 3 Artillery guns for each side.
I also have 2 X MkIV male, 3 x MkIV Female and 1 x A7V.
I will add more artillery and mortars at some point. (I have some WW2 items as substitutes).

I am going to use Rapid Fire for Rookies so that I have a simple game to start with.

I am going to base the infantry on 15mm deep rectangular bases.
This is the narrowest that works with the Pendraken figures.
I can fit then into some trench terrain without the trenches looking like motorways.
They will be in squads of 10 based 4 on 30x15, 3 on 30x15, 2 on 15x15 and 1 on 15x15.
This gives me 10 figures that can be arranged in a line 90mm x 15mm in a trench or two ranks 45mm x 30mm etc.
I can also remove casualties to get any number from 1 to 10.

HMG, MMG, LMG, Anti-tank rifle teams, Flamethrowers and Mortar teams on 25mm round bases.
This makes it easy to see special weapons crews.

I think Artillery will go on 40mm round bases but I am not fully decided yet.
Square bases would be better if they will be used with limbers but round bases look more like emplacements.

Tanks are on rectangular bases about 60mm x 30mm - very similar to your pictures.

Regards

Mick

Mick - I'm basing for Great War Spearhead, so bases are 30x30mm and represent a company of infantry or a battery of guns. This is the recommended size for the rules to correspond with the space occupied by a real world company. Vehicles are rather more based by what fits, especially in 10mm (as the rules are designed around 6mm).

At the ground scale of the rules trenches are more area terrain, than literal representation.

I have used 30x15mm basing for 10mm WWII, though with only 2 figures per base.

Your basing sounds like it should work, especially with wanting to keep the trenches looking sensible. Rapid fire is sort of representational isn't it with each figure representing several, but tends to play more as a skirmish

Very nice Fred!  And lots of little inspirations all around.  May I ask, do you think it's a good idea to base the tanks at this scale or not?  I see yours are based, but i'm not sure if after doing it you still think it was the right idea.  As a rule, I tend not to base vehicles, but this is my first foray into this scale.

Cheers Mate!

I base tanks for a couple of reasons

1) protection - probably more in storage and transport than in games. I magnetically base all my figures.

2) representation - I often play at a fairly high level, 1 stand to a platoon or company. So it helps to say this unit should have this footprint.

Cheers Fred!  That was more or less what I suspected, but I just wanted to confirm.  I have some rendrea plastic bases I plan to use for my vehicles and then use cut out magnet to add to the bottom.  Really inspiring stuff!

Managed to get back to this project recently - hope to get some stuff finished to join the WWI painting club.  I've been working on some WWI heavy kit.

A7V, with camo added - used a couple of shades on the browns - though it doesn't really show in this photo. Nearly ready to get this based up.

After a ridiculously long time I have added to this project.

Some late war British infantry, these guys give me a Brigade for GWSH, along with a few extra stands of divisional assets (Cav, & heavy mortars).

Still work in progress, need to finish the basing, and matt varnish the figures - but getting very close after probably a year sitting based coated on painting sticks.

Thanks  :)

Go with 10mm it's great!!!

More usefully - some (many) years back when I was looking at small scale figures I was trying to decide between 6mm and 10mm and 15mm, and the main reason I went with 10mm was that the infantry and big enough to see and spot what weapons they have, and that the tanks aren't so huge that they take up loads of space on the table.

Having subsequently played with a mates 6mm collection I'm sure I made the right decision. Because while the 6mm tanks are lovely detailed models, the infantry aren't. They really do get lost in their bases.

The Pendraken WWI range is pretty wide, covering most theatres, and it has  lots of depth for the main protagonists.

A bit of thread necromancy here.  ;) Excellent work with those figures and models, Fred. My interest in the Great War revived recently and I'm undecided between Pendraken 10mm or Peter Pig 15mm. Having seen the photos in your posts, they have me leaning toward Pendraken.

Glad that the pictures tipped you in the direction of 10mm - its a great scale, especially when you have infantry, cavalry and tanks on the same battlefield.

I like 15mm infantry but the vehicles start to get large.

I do really need to get on with more stuff for these forces.

I can share this captured Mk IV which I did a while ago, but forgot to post

Those are nice, I like the effect of the torn up earth you've created.

I have Pendraken ECW armies, and like 'em just fine. 10mm would be a manageable scale for Great War gaming on my part as well. Costs and space considerations mean it'll take less cost and less space than 15mm and up.

This is a great model from Pendraken - only got as far as assembling it so far. Don't exactly need it, but one of the best things about 10mm is being able to get really big guns!

Wow!  :o Yes, those are nice.

I've been browsing the Pendraken catalogue in between house-hunting trips with my wife, and found myself wondering about the feasibility of getting 60 pounders and 105mm howitzers on the table.  ;)

I do struggle a bit seeing late war WWI games were there is lots of grass.

Grass and equivalent was the norm in 1918, even when the fighting took place across the mid-war battlefields like the Somme.

By 'equivalent' I am referring to the chest-high fields of wheat in the 2nd Battle of Soissons for example. In other words, terrain that is not necessarily grass but is not mud.

Very nice indeed.  If I hadn't already "invested" in 15mm I would consider Pendraken's 10mm.

Thanks. The Pendraken stuff is very nice - especially with all the new additions. 10mm seems a good scale for WWI as you need lots of infantry but also have lots of tanks and big guns to fit in as well.
