Title: Halo: A 28mm wargaming project: covenant troops cast finally.
Post by: Commander Vyper on July 18, 2008, 10:50:22 AM
Well....

As a big fan of Halo related stuff I've always wanted to do a little 'hail to the chief' as it were. ;)

When I found Pig Iron about two years ago, always loved their stuff but always clicked onto the next website. Bought some of the kolony minis last year and then took another look at the heavy troopers..... hmmm?

So I approached the guys and girls at Pig Iron and whispered in their ears that separate head purchases would be an excellent idea. They liked it and the rest is history.

Anyway back to the project.

Pig Iron Heavy Trooper heads
copplestone castings jungle troopers
plastic GW Cadians
Wryd miniatures modern weapons pack
Heresy miniatures modern/sci-fi weapons pack
MacFarlane Halo 3 warthogs (currently two, another one to purchase).

Basic shot of the cadian based ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Troopers), blue tac stage currently, still to join the lines on the weapons but you get the general idea. I'm not going to exact carbon copy, but at least enough of a nod to make it work, will be adding knees and elbow pads, scopes to the rifles.

Crew for one of the 'hogs is done, will dig out a pic later.

You should see what I've got in store for the Chief! ;)

More to follow...

The Commander.

Nice idea. I am not up on Halo, so have no point of reference, but they look good to me. :)

Oh wow!

I've been wondering when someone was going to do this.

For some reason, I just have never found my "ideal" SciFi trooper.  For some the problem is the helmet, for some the weapons, for others the uniform.

I too have thought about modding the plastic GW Cadians with the Pig Iron Heavy Trooper heads.

Will be watching eagerly as you proceed on your project.  Please be as specific as possible and post lots of photos.

Good luck on the project, looking great so far.

Hey Malamute, a little live action to whett your whistle!

<paramname="movie"value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SYZqoUwfC18&hl=en&fs=1"></param>

ODST:

Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODST) are an elite branch of the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) special forces. Comprised of an all-volunteer fighting force of some of the bravest men the UNSC has to offer, the ODST have served valiantly in many campaigns against the Covenant, including engagements on three separate HALO installations.

Warthog & ODST Crew:

Torso's all drilled and pinned, need to sculpt the legs then I can paint it all.

General points:

heads, arms, and support hands, (where I've had to cut them out from the original lasguns) are all drilled and pinned in place. Still need to finish the gunner on the back of the first warthog, the second one will be manned by regular USNC marines:

The third hog I'm going to convert into a troop carrier, (reference from Halo 3).

I'll get some shots of the copplestone and Em4 regulars later if I get chance.

wow, it looks like that Hog is nicely scaled for the cadians.  could you post a few more pictures of that one, cause it looks like I'll need some of those as well  ;D

Brilliant work on the conversion, like it a lot, somehow the head swap makes those models way more brilliant

The McFarlane one rather than the Heroclix one is great for them I must admit.

More pics over the weekend.

Doubtful, bloody shame though as those three little featurettes are amazing, you know that the warthog is fully running? Weta built it out of a standard 4x4, and crashed it into some sidings at the back of the workshop! ;) (On Youtube).

Good call, if anyone gets wants a brute chopper I bought one accidentally and opened it ebfore i realised my mistake:

Nice don't get me wrong but I really want my thrid warthog for the apc conversion.

Buy me a warthog and I'll post you the chopper in exchange, with a few pig iron heads. ;)

Update:

Copplestone casting's jungle troopers (4) have been drilled and heads pinned, mould lines filed, based and ready for undercoat. Other 5 to go.

Cadian based ODSTs still at bluetac stage but will be put together possibly tomorrow, but hey it's been glorious weather for a change so who can blame me for enjoying it.

Pics tomorrow.

No problems mate hopefully someone else will.

Lots to update but glorious weather and missing camera don't help.

Anyway:

5 Copplestone's now based and just need sights fitted to the guns plus a decision on filing off/keeping the helmet light and they can be undercoat. The other five are in the process of clean up, sniper being rebuilt to be more in keeping with the halo sniper rifle.

15 Cadian/ODST's now built, still have weapon swops to complete on 10 of them, imperial eagles need to be removed and chest armour remoulded, few other bits and pieces then they can all be glued and pinned ready for undercoating.

I WILL find that damn camera!!  >:D

After reading this thread and looking at the movie clips, I've got a bit of a Halo bug myself now. Have bought a novel to read , mainly because I'm crap at video games, to get some background.

But Commander, what are you going to use as the covenant troops?

Not too sure at present, just want to get the UNSC's done first, that's why I haven't given them any 'acquired' covenant weaponary, we'll have to see. Might have to be heroclix repaints at a push.

Who knows? ;)

Just got my commander set through. The medi droid's going in the ABC warriors box, the sniper and medic I'm keeping the other two will probably go up for sale.

Still can't find the sodding camera!!!!! Too hot to sleep tonight so will turn the houes upside down instead!

Camera has been swallowed by a trans dimensional warp I reckon!

Got to a point where I wanted to get them undercoated, could have still done so much more to them but you have to draw a line somewhere. So that's five copplestone jungle trooper conversions undercoated and based ready for paint.

Will continue on the camera hunt.

Commander,
Being of the frugal sort when it comes to buying minis, I have to ask you - how much did each figure end up costing you?  Seems like an expensive conversion, though they do look terrific.

No idea matey sorry, but if you can work out the individual price of a cadian add to it the price of an individual pig iron head and one of Heresy's weapons that will give you an idea.

Oh ok give it here!

90p for the cadian
20p for the gun
15p for the helmet

£1.25 a mini.....expensive???

Erm which school of finance did you come from Nick?

It's a deal it's a steal...it's sale of the f**king century!

Similarities all round I feel...... everything's derived mate! (a human with an enclosed helmet in a sci-fi setting? who'd have thunk it!??)

I will be using the parts to create another proper Doom trooper with zombie on a little display base with obligatory barrel!

 ::)

Anyway....

The jungle and E4M ones are destined for UNSC grunt colours. The plastic cadian based ones are going to be the ODST's. As I said they are not carbon copy but inspired. The cadians will lose the helmet light and the visors may even get smoothed but as I said before how far do you seriously go.

change of plan re: ODST's:

Take a number of metal space marine scouts, pig iron heavy trooper visored helmets, a bit of greenstuff for knee pads and two hours of xfactor droning on in the background and me wanting to do something constructive and waddaya get?

Photobucket updated so the old pics should now work. Including:

Copplestone USCM
GW cadian conversions, (were going to be ODST but now reassigned as USCM)
E4M (dropped from the project but headswopped with the kolony heads now near future paramiltary/police).

New pics of the new ODST's later this am, though still in two minds as to whether I need to do more with the helmets to smooth the 'hell jumpers' out a little more.

Ok:

i) Very WIP
ii) More filing, losing of skulls, modification of weapons and GS'ing to complete
iii) It'll stop Dewback nagging!  :D
iv) Much more to come.
v) Excellent Pig iron APC in the background, will become part of the force eventually.
vi) All to be based properly.
vii) kickstand for the HB still to locate and HB to be further modified.

So then:

ODST's

Metal space marine scouts with headswop and GS'ed kneepads, more mods to undertake. Also thrown in the pig iron sniper,(probably end up USCM) backpack added and peaked 'crap' hat swoped out for helmet. The pigiron helmets really work well with the scout armour, they are definately a good 'nod' to the halo characters that inspired me.

Sniper:

Shotgun:

Squad Leader: (Probably swop out the knife and bolt pistol for dual hand weapons).

Heavy weapon specialist:

Trooper: (Need to lose the skull on the bolter and probably play about with the bolter too, would weapon swap but much harder with lead).

USCM Sniper: (first cut, will modify weapon).

Still need to work out how much more I modify the helmets, keep you posted.

Well you did say you'd post the pictures! I may not have been cycling but I've been casting the gaming board to be used at BLAM this weekend all day.

They look great. Thought about using the new plastic scouts at all? The main issue with the plastic ones were the heads, not an issue with a swap :)

I did, but then again why spend £12-£14 when I didn't need to, (I know the plastic would have been an easier swop and cut etc but where's the challenge eh?  :D

Also it appears that I've managed to throw away the set of NVG's lovingly carved from the scout head before cutting it off and replacing with the pigiron helmet. ARSE!!!

Copplestone Jungle troopers with helmet/head swops, that's it.

Another five still to build oh and then onto the cadians (about 15 on the go) and the warthogs, then paint them all oh and the Pig Iron APC.

Obscenely good idea Commander. They are looking great. Tempted to copy but I always seem to stab myself when cutting off heads.

So, I'm assuming those McFarlane Warthogs are nicer than the Wizkids' Haloclix ones?

I've got a Haloclix one....Anyone got both that can do a side by side photo shot?  Or tell me what the differences are.

Far superior! They're not all 'battle damaged' for a start. The Mcfarlane one is a better scale fit as the clix one was done for the Haloclix figures which are huge next to 28mm figs. I never bought the clix version so can't do a proper comparison, but the clix one is definately bigger.

I bought the Haloclix one at a sale at my comic shop.  It does not scale up well at all with 28mm figures.  Copplestone, Reaper, Hasselfree, and GW.  I tried all of them and more.  It still looks wrong next to 28mm figures.

'cos you've shown pics of yours with figures in ;) Admittedly that doesn't mean your's are finished, but they're further along than mine. All I've done is remove the guns from three of them to start their change into transports.

So far I am having issues with the hands that are gripping the gun. Any insight on how you manage to do this so well?

Well I cut the guns and fused them with the plastic cadian rifle butts, still need to finish the join but that's how I did it.

You can add spacefleet into the mix too you know & Cthulhu, Lord of the Rings, 15mm Halo, don't sell me short warren! ;)

Time is a very rare commodity, which I have very little of, so I cut into what I like to call wasted time, (monotonous TV viewing, sleep, you know that kind of time) and use that for minis.

Metal weapons are from Heresy miniatures, Andy's also recently done some more, shotguns, bullpup and a sniper rifle, all very usable.

Title: Halo Reach: Noble Team
Post by: Commander Vyper on September 26, 2010, 06:26:37 PM
Noble Team:

Commander Carter-A259 (Noble One)
Lieutenant Commander Catherine-B320 (Noble Two)
Warrant Officer Jun-A266 (Noble Three)
Warrant Officer Emile-A239 (Noble Four)
Chief Warrant Officer Jorge-052 (Noble Five)
Lieutenant SPARTAN-B312 (Noble Six)

Well as you know, bit of a Halo nut, so with the release of Halo:Reach I started work on my own version of Noble Team, using Pig iron system trooper bodies and a range of pig iron heavy trooper variant closed helmets (customised by yours truely).

Noble One: modified helmet and plastic-tube shoulder armour, still more sculpting and work to complete.

Noble two:used a bionic arm from my necromunda bits box to recreate Noble Two's arm Heavy Trooper 7 closed helmet modified with GS.

Noble Three: Swoped out rifle for one of Heresy's new sniper rifles, looks great, still to work on helmet etc...

Noble Four: rebuilt the helmet to recreate the EVA helmet, more sculpting to detail to the top and rebreather, also going to carve the skull into the visor as Emile has. ;) Also probably remove the las rfile and add a shotgun, (again weapon of choice for Emile's line of work). Mocked up the CCW (curved blade), probaby reduce it in size again but just wanted to see if a cut and shut would work.

Noble Five: just mocked up the shoulder pad at present more detail to follow, helmet to be bulked out too.

Nole Six, just some helmet work to make it a little more ODST like , nothing extra yet.

I'll also be adding magnets to nobles 1-4 & 6 as I'm using Elysian FW jumppacks to represent the jet pack loadout, (they are spot on!).

No time for more this week but will update after next weeked.

Enjoy

The Commander

Great thread - always interested in how people game/plan to game Halo -  now go post some new content!  ;)

Got any ideas for the Covenant?

Not sure about the Commander but my original plan was to use:

Spriggan Miniatures Spugs, Alpha Forge Mephalians, Black Scorpion Aliens, Mongoose Skinnies, Rackham COGs and maybe the odd Khurasan Garn.

I got together about 120 Skinnies (half are now painted), 18 Spugs, a few Mephalians and a 2nd Rackham COGs Army Box.

Things were progressing slowly on the painting front (don't they always?) and then I fell on a great deal a few months ago and picked up over 200 Halo Covenant clickies.  :D

Bendy-plastic may not be to everyone's taste but after demoing/playing AT-43 for a few years, chasing down extra HorrorClix Aliens and having less time/inclination to paint than I had, I'm far less critical of pre-painted/ready to go stuff than Iwas.  ::)

I don't want to sound snobby, excellent models by the way, but the video on the first page as the live action, was actually the Halo Movie trailer, it was release onto the XBOX live market ages ago, then they dropped the film and it was replaced with Distract 9

Movie snob mode off

Excellent minis mate

Hmm...help me out with the fluff please!

So Noble 5 (is that Jorge) is a Spartan II, but all the rest are Spartan IIIs?

Egads, I've got all the novels/the halo encyclopedia, the reach game guide (just for the art section really) and I've missed this important detail.  Where did you learn this, if you don't mind me asking?

Talk in Empire Magazine this month that Old Stephen Spieburg and dreamworks are sniffing around again on the project, looking to the expanded universe novels to avoid the legal minefield left by universal/fox's failed attempt.

Anyway back to the minis, a little more work done on Noble 3 and Noble 5. Pics when I get a chance.

Just been drilling and adding arm armatures to three of the six, one has the arms sculpted so I've bent them forward to be dual welding, the last two I'm playing with Revolution CSO trooper arms.

Bit 'monkey gibbon' but once cut down and the pigron shouldpads added should look good.

Ok then,

These arrived this week from Pig iron, a selection of master/armature casts for the next system troopers release:

Started to work the armature into a dual welding pose, though may take the arms off the static pose and add to one of the more dynamic bodies.

Also ordered some Spugs from Paul Reid

http://www.sprigganminiatures.co.uk/ (http://www.sprigganminiatures.co.uk/)

Great proxy Covenant: a little big for grunts but work well besides and the jumppack spugs: drones all the way! The website pics don't do them justice, it was Monkey Fighters paintjob that sold me on them.

More to follow, currently looking at as I said CSO peacekeeper arms + pinned a few so will probably sculpt some full arms too.

Will do, the armoured spugs are just a about the same height as system troopers so a bit big for grunts really but they work well. The jumppack ones are a about 3-4mm taller due to the prancing about a bit poses. I'll take a few pictures soon as I get chance mate.

All this painting Stormtrooper armour's got me thinking about the spartan PJ's again. So I've had a spare ten minutes to kill and mocked up this guy:

(http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq186/Vyperzoom/ODST/Red%20vs%20Blue/RIMG4871Medium.jpg)(http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq186/Vyperzoom/ODST/Red%20vs%20Blue/RIMG4872Medium.jpg)

Crouching body master and CSO peackeeper arms, still need to raise the shoulder and maybe shorten the upper arm a touch (still a bit gibbony)but gives a nice CTFguarding the flag pose.

When I'm bored with white I'll come back to these guys. Might even sneak one in to the paintline  ;)

Just noticed these and got a little excited.

What I'd really like to see is some heads like the marines/army wear, open faced.
The PI Heavy Infantry would make ideal marines IMO but I just can't find a helmet that I like for them. I was toying with the idea of getting some PI System Troopers as Spartans and then getting some of the First Corps Sci-fi line as marines but I'm  not overly struck on their minis but I thought the slight size difference might work to differentiate between marines/Spartans. Tried building my own from GW bits but again the helmet failed me.

Go down the halo wars route, open faced helmets, with with a scarf/fabric covering the mouth and nose:

Works for me.

Yup, been badgering Si for ages for more 'in keeping' hard sci-fi enclosed helmets, there wasn't a large range, infact only two really.... a bit spartan to be honest.... ;).

Equipment and weapons drop in t-minus three weeks.

Then I will finish the fight!

I've come to expect these stunning threads from the Frothers crowd, so biz as usual with this one, but a three year old thread still alive? Brill...

I'm glad the boy Slug hasn't seen this one, he's too much of the mega bloc lego brick toy halo merchandise already I don't think I could face another project in 28mm.

Move along please nothing to see here...

Well my fault that I get sidetracked into other projects, ;) plus know what's coming so didn't want not to include the new helmet options. All will be revealed soon.

Been having a further play with the system troopers. Currently have eight allocated for the deathmatch/slayer game. bascially one on one combat, individual livery so expect a good splash of colour:

So started work, started the test paint of the first one using one of the new alternative ST helmets:

A few highlights to add, more weathering then base and he's done.

Second one undercoated, this one's going to be grey/white.

If you're wondering where the backpacks are I've got to magnetise them so I can swop armour loadouts (from normal backpacks to jumppacks), maybe even a second magnet for collected weapons from the battlefield as well, definately adding them to the rear base lip to show how many grenades each figure is carrying, (2 normal 2 sticky) keep you posted.

Ok so finished the second one and prepped and undercoated three and four, plus took another shot of the first one and had a little pin and play last night on one of the masters.

So Spartan one again:

Spartan two, using a heavy trooper unmodified helmet:

Spartan three, using one of the new system trooper helmets I received yesterday, gives that COB helmet look:

Spartan four, this uses a CSO peacekeeper head for abberant games, looks a little familiar but I've left the rebreather's on on this one as the helmet is a little less bulky and may look out of place:

Also managed to drill, pin glue and GS the crouching dual weilding spartan built from one of the master cast dollies I was sent.

Title: Re: My Halo inspired Sci-fi Noble Team update
Post by: Commander Vyper on April 06, 2011, 10:12:52 PM
Ok then as well as 'the slayer' spartans I'm also as you know in the middle of Reach's Noble Team.

Two of the more complex helmet conversions were Emile and Jun, (the EVO and the Scout helmet respectively).

Emile A239:

Previously I'd got Emile's Helmet to the full face dome position but still needed to finish it off, so last night i scored the bottom lines of the front of the helmet and added some strips of GS that I worked into place to form the lower edge of the helmet below the dome, quite pleased with it to be honest:

I swopped the body out for one of the newer commander sculpts, then removed the lasgun, drilled and pinned the shotgun in place, taking a little of the stock for a nice fit, cut some very fine plasti-rod into 6 shotgun cartridges and fixed to the forearm with supergule then a thin GS strap, (I'll file the cartridges smooth once the superglue and the GS has gone off. Added to hunting knife and started to clean up the mould lines.

The result:

Just need to finish cleaning it up before undercoat

Next up Jun A266...

great conversions (love the two-pistol pose Simon should copy that one!) and painted troops look excellent! I'm not convinced by the Aberrant helmet though....

Post by: Commander Vyper on April 07, 2011, 08:40:42 AM
I know what you mean about the aberrant one. I've got an idea though that involves another spare head and a diamond saw, keep you posted ;)

Jun A266:

sniper rifle from Heresy miniatures, combat knife and sniper rounds on shoulder (GW plastic).

Helmet: modified heavy trooper, removed the 'nose' and helmet light, built up the chin and added the further shielding to the lower visor, then built up the top of the helmet and the 'peak'.

Will give it a clean up and a sharpen on a few of the edges now the GS is set, come out ok though.

Cheers

Highly inspirational stuff, CV!!

You have prompted me to order a batch of system troopers and two sets of the new heads. I am torn about the third set:

The helmet looks great and very HALO-ish from front and back, but I am concerned that from the side it will be huge. Is there any way you could please furnish a picture of this dude side-on to the helmet? It would be a tremendous help in deciding which helmets to go with.

Thanks!!!

Might do some more on them tomorrow night, but I really need to get those figures done for the Salute 2011 games so might have to put the Spartan programme on hold for a week, (doubtful though! lol).

Enjoy

Inspired by this thread, I just received my order of System Troopers and new seperate heads from Rattlehead Games here in the US.

They are lovely, lovely figures, and to be honest they have me quite stumped. I got one set each of the new alternative head sets, and I am absolutely at a loss over which ones to use with the system trooper bodies, as each of the three looks great with the figures.  I could use all three and do a mix and match, but that's not quite the look I was hoping to go for. In any case, these are highly recommended.

Now if I could afford three squads instead of one, problem solved! ;D ;D ;D

Been very hectic with life generally of late, but looking to finally decide on a pose for Noble One and get five and six finished then paint.

A baby's face in the link? Not sure that's right Dave.

No the base model is the licensed warthog from the Halo vehicle series, (McFarlane) not the nasty heroclix one that was poorly scaled, these ones:

To start with the rear gun is unscrewed, (plans for that as a mounted static weapon already got a nice triod base that it fits straight into from an old pencil sharpener) then I need to build the rear passenger bench. I'm going with the Reach version, (three seats) rather than the Halo II or ODST version with four.

Just working out bits currently, found some seats from a el cheapo chinese hummer copy toy, then then framework and some brass etch mesh, all will be revealed soon.

So, remember I sculpted these helmets and a few others for noble team?

Well I was speaking with Simon & Lise at Pig Iron about potentially casting these up. He offered me some space in one of the new moulds and I set the work finishing six highly inspired Halo heads.

Just got them back from the casters this week, and arrived in my sweaty little hands yesterday:

Very pleased indeed, ended up with ten sprues, so 60 spartan helmets should be plenty to finish the fight!

The masters survived the process quite well too:

Well there's something to tick of my bucket list as well, had sculpts professionally cast.

No real update at all to be honest, took another look at my space marine scout ODST's and took their heavy trooper helmets off and replaced them with one of Si's later System trooper helmets, (on noble six in the baove pics), really suits the ODST look much better.

Might take some pics later, I am planning to find some time to paint, but with 16 month old twins there are simply not enough hours in the day.

New system trooper helmets are much nicer I reckon, used a heresy miniatures bullpup sci-fi gun to play with the bolter and make more of a battlerifle from Halo, looks alot different. Dug out another couple of scouts for conversion too.

Plus I finished building two of my custom spartans, using one of my custom cast EVA styled helmets:

Another two blue team painted last night and a further seven prepped and ready for this weekend, with three more to prep, then I need to go back to the master bodies and do a bit of kit bashing

Hoist the colours! ;)

OOO You're doing Slayer Spartans!!!! :-*

Are you going to make their flags?? ???

Flags would be stockpile or Capture The Flag, rather than slayer...but yes I'll be making flags too!

Just placed an order with Pig Iron today for another pack of system troopers and special weapons troopers. Also got a nice little gift through from Lise and Si, the new sniper/spotter team and the scenic ruins, very nice:

lol, I already imagine when some plastic manifacture will release the non-halo troops, 30 for 20£, and you will die for happiness... :P

Still i don't know if it is a fear or a wish for you :P
Title: Re: My Halo inspired Sci-fi
Post by: Commander Vyper on July 23, 2011, 08:13:36 PM
LOL, like that's gonna happen. ;)

For marines I'm still torn between those plastic cadian kitbashes, and Heresy sci-fi trooper.

Perfect for marines, even thought about the closed face heads to use them as odst's, but that's worked out well with the scout space marines I reckon.

Anyway I'm leaning towards the Heresy ones in the main, (ANDY SCULPT MORE!!!!!) just wish I could get the look right on the plastics, will have another play once I've got these spartans sorted. I'm not stopping on these until all 16 are painted, plus a few armour loadout specials. Then I'll move back to the slayer spartans and ODSTs.

Cheers

I'd go with the heresy ones, they look so close to spot on.
However I also think the heavy troopers from PI arent a million miles off either.
I've made up a few out of imperial guard using cadian torsos and catachan legs but I was never happy with the heads. I think the closest heads are heresy by far for marines.

Well I've got 16 so should be enough gun fodder..erm I mean support against the covenant ;) I think I'll stick with the cadians for hog crew etc.. colour schemes help alot to pull similar figures together. You can see what I did with plastics earlier in the thread, kinda a halfway house between marines and odsts. Might use them for a human protagonist force at some stage.

Taken a little break from 15mm to complete the two four man Red vs. Blue Teams and started planning a small but leathal team match/slayer gaming board.

Going to be a UNSC/Omi base, kinda a cross between Courtyard level on Reach campaign and firefight and Mombassa base vehicle bays.

A 2'x 2' table, multi-leveled with docking area/vehicle bays and a command centre. This is really a quick and dirty but it will be a well detailed as I can make it in the time allowing. I'll make sure it can be added too so even if it's a bit spartan (;) ) it'll be a good base to start from.

Tight timescale.... One week 3 days!  :o

Tonight:

Table drawn up
Boards cut
gantry pieces found
engineering bay started

Will be bulking out the framwork on the board tomorrow night, pictures over the next few days.

Wish me luck! ;) (All this and a load of 15mm specialists, vehicles and a few tanks and heavy gears too! I'm mad obviously!  ;D).

Also started work on the table again today, it's taking shape but will take a while, time I haven't got! ;)

Cliff section completed tonight. raised by 1 1/2" using compressed pink styrene, hot glue gun used to fix the cork and gaps behind the cliff filled with offcuts of styrene then a whole tube of smooth filler, (well it was going off a bit) to bulk and seal out the back. Replaced the foamboard retaining sections with MDF.

Also washed with a few more resin scenery pieces that I base coated early in the week.

Lasty but not least, 6mmPhil's containers turned up as did my little order from Scotia Grendel, (Cheers for the extra bits! ;)). More painting! ;) Just waiting on Jed's sci-fi scenerey bits now and then I'll crack on as time is a ticking!

Anyway all looks very tidy, pics tomorrow cause i'm, knackered and need my bed! ;)

Ok so picutre from last night's work:

Tonight managed to finish the turret guns, gun metalled the pistons and a few other bits and pieces then washed with black:

Also got on with some of the lovely pieces I got from Ainsty miniatures, cargo crates and weapons lockers, a few more bits to finish on the lockers then they're done.
(One missile crate from GW 40k too).

All in all really happy with progress to date, will focus on completing the fortifications tomorrow as I've been playing Halo reach (Courtyard) to see how the roof structure work, so ready to complete.

6 days to go and I'm confident that I'll have a working table for next week's gaming trip. Hopefully my order of sci-fi doors, control panels, screens and other bits of scenery will arrive from Jed so I can start work on them to include on the table. Loads of the GOT range, perfect for Hard-sci-fi halo.

Also the containers from 6mmphil now primed, will paint tomorrow.

Cheers

Little update:

Sealed the cliffface and gravel with a senics spray adhesive so that should fix all the extra gravel/sand added this morning.

Well I'm a great fan of pre-printed pavements and roads for gaming board, (my zed gaming board is testiment to that little factoid) but I fancied something a bit more in keeping with the totally scratch built nature of this board so the 3mm MDf boards that have been cut to fit the open space area have had the Lazy Forger treat and I've used Sangennaru's concrete paving tutorial to great effect.

http://www.thelazyforger.com/tutorials/how-to-sculpt-a-paved-road-part-1/ (http://www.thelazyforger.com/tutorials/how-to-sculpt-a-paved-road-part-1/)

I then mapped out the shapes I wanted in pencil, squared them off, and with a scribing tool and set work creating the cracks, impact damage etc... five sections later and about two hours and this is the result:

Quickly undercoated tonight, will paint using the sponge method tomorrow. Might need to go over the cracks again as I didn't brush away the scored lines as much I as thought I had.

Like the look that so thanks to Sengennaru's great and inspired tutorial. Finally ink washed some Void resin barrel sets, some more Ainsty sci-fi pieces and some pig iron stowage so will highlight up and finish tomorrow.

I have to get all the fortifications and walkways completed tomorrow so I can undercoat everything and crack on. Four days , (or rather evenings to go!  ;D)

Cheers

Sunday update:

Prayin' and sprayin'!

Well I got the pavement boards scored Saturday night and gave them a rough undercoat using spray matt black, but ran out so had to wait until Sunday to progress further. In the meantime I added sand/gravel mix to the cliff face and little gulleys and outcrops.

Little mock up again..out came the figures!

That morning I got the pavements sprayed using a mixture of greys and a little skull white, came out nicely.

Anyway later that afternoon/evening I set to work with the spraycans, using black for the gaming edges, humbrol acrylics (brown) for the cliffs and basing material, highlighted with a few passes of skull white. Used large pieces of card to mask off areas already painted to good effect. The results straight out of the can so to speak are very pleasing to my eye:

With this bit done I had to seriously think about my plan to have a completed board for this weekend and focus on getting all the components finished and the board to a 'working' level. I have to be realistic here and say it won't be finished completely.

With the quality of the board and the time spent I'm not going to feck it up just at the last stage. So no, I'll be working on the warthog workshop tonight and getting that to a primed position, maybe painted. So far it all looks bloody nice and be a shame to ruin it by rushing the last bit.

After all, it will be modular...... and I have my standards!;)

Update from last night:

Today my pestering of my local farmer's supermarket paid off and I got hold of two sets of chewing gum display boxes, each with four ice white leds, all individually powered. Result.

So armed with my trusty drill I set to work adding a bit of illumination to my warthog workshop wip:

As I said yesterday, wanted to get it at least primed, so added the pipework, ladder sections and other bits and pieces and set to work sspraying it all black. Those platformer floor pieces I'm using as armoured plates, (jury's still out on those) were sprayed black then lightly with humbrol dark green to give a more military weathered look.

So did I finish the table...no.
Am I pleased with how it looks so far...very.
I'm I glad I didn't rush it at the end... definately.

I've got my plans for the other bits and pieces so once I'm back I'll start work on finishing this section and then maybe planning the second board....maybe I'll wait awile.... ;)

End of the day this is still going to be very playable this weekend, I might even get a bit more done when I'm away, but as I leave in 6 hours this is me signing out!

Cheers all.

Weekend came and went, we played twice on Thursday night and four games Saturday. Some pics and some game reviews. The rules worked well, not too clunky and the right edge of cinematic balance and gameplay, (will post the rules up when I get round to updating from this weekend) and some very nice set pieces, pistol double taps, sniper takedowns, assassinations....all good!

Fantastic project. With the rerelease of the halo clix stuff, I keep edging closer to doing something like this. I know I have a couple buddies who play the vid game who would play a miniatures version any time. The challenge is to do all modded figures or go with the clix stuff, and maybe try to improve them?

As we were playtesting we kept the rules basic, no armour loadouts, team wipe out victory conditions, (ie no respawns), no grenades, just battle rifles, magnum pistol, (precision shots) and one sniper rifle per team, (long distance precision). We switched sides after each game.

As the playing area was quite compact, it made for good use of cover, overwatch and sniping, with some very cinematic and true to the xbox game headshot kills :D. Assassinations were messy too and close combat is brutal (str 4 with a 1d6 +/- modifiers with a save on 4+) and final. In the game the spartans soak up a lot of damage with their shield points and armour saves, when they get into close range though it's over very quickly.

The magnums came into their own too with a good few headshots totted up with pistols, imagine using your BR then swinging it round, drawing your pistol and finishing the job. ;)

Ultimate winners:

Red Team with four wins to two over the two nights.

That's it for now, will start work on the rest of the board soon but no rush, need to tweak the rules, which I haven't done yet from the weekend, once I do I'll post up again.

I have I swear! ;) I think I did it as a separate thread as well:

Anyway the bases are from pencil sharpeners that themselves are perfect scaled chinese rip off's of an old action force/ GI Joe support weapon. Somehow they'd die mould scaled it down to perfect 28mm. The model was great in it's own rights, I was going to add a gunner's chair and paint it up in Z force colours, but I needed the bases; so the guns were removed and will probably see live as 15mm defence lasers/game objectives.

I paid £2.00 each for them, and you should be able to find them on ebay

Thanks bunches! I ordered 2 off ebay. I figure I like very small games so two weapon emplacements should suit any scenario. I'll be adapting Ganesha Games' Flying Lead for the rules. I do plan to use the crap-tastic plastic figs, what can I say, I'm a miniatures whole, I'll slap my paint on anything.  ;)

i'm sorry for the OT, but... the cannons look great, what about the scale? should they be used for 28mm minis?

Note:

Having more of a wander around and there's talk of this lot being nearer to 1/72nd/1/100, so that would pose a problem for 28mm, but not for 15mm, good job I dabble in both! ;) Shame if it's not 28mm though, but the proposed retail pricing would seem to indicate the former not latter, (falcon for $17.99).

???

We'll see....

At least if they are 1/72 scale you can fudge it a bit with the larger craft. I know this is sacrilege in some circles but I use 1/72 stuff with 28mm often. Especially when it's aircraft. Unfortunately 1/100 is pushing the boundaries a bit too far, even for me.

Hey commander,  right now I'm using the halo actionclix marines and ODST, but I've never really been satisfied with them.  Previews of the Mantic Corporation figures look like they would make a better (and cheaper) starting point for UNSC troopers.  Do you know of anyone that makes replacement weapons that look anything like the original MA5 assault rifles or the BR55 battle rifles for a weapons swap?  Thanks.

Best thing I can suggest are the Heresy miniatures sci-fi weapons, (reasonable BR and DMRs) aberrant games CSO peacekeeper weapons and a kitbash of the gw plastic bolter and the heresy weapon, (Used on my ODST conversions).

Good luck, will be starting this thread off again soon with some more Red vs Blue, the ODST's finally painted and some warthog variants...so keep em peeled.

Well it's been an interesting night...

Lovejoy (Michael) as you may recall sculpted some not convenant troops a while back, (grunt, Elite and Jackal) and I drooled over these with a passion. Well got back in touch with him recently and asked about the greens. Michaels putting together a range of near future sci-fi powered armoured humans, (seen the sniper...it's lovely!!!! :-* :-* :-*) and told me he wasn't going to do anything with those greens and would I like them????

Erm let me think about that for a nano second.. ;)

They turned up today, bloody amazing little sculpts, going to get masters made and get them cast for my own personal use, (with a few helmet and weapons options to boot):

Very lucky boy thanks to Michael for such a generous gift.

So these got me fired up so after spending an hour looking for my warthogs to start the tracked varient I gave up and finished up painting one more of Team Red, (first row far right).
that had sat in basecoat for a year:

Naff pics, still to seal and base them but more to follow, going to start a few more dolly conversions using those CSO peacekeepers arms I got through.

Yup as they say..finish the fight!

;)

Always. ;)

Basically as you know I love Si's System Trooper concepts, but sometimes for me the sculpts are a little too static and limited in respect to weapon choice, (Nothing I've not said to his face).

As Si gave me a stack of trooper dollies, (armless body master casts in a number of the latest poses), add to that separate arms, my own sculpted helmet casts and the Abberant games parts order of CSO Peacekeeper arms and a smattering of Heresy weapons and even a Eysian jump packs, (thanks Dwartist) and the odd GW rocket launcher or two I've been able to create what I reckon are a little more animated 'spartans' for my own purposes.

This one I did a while back and is currently with Dwartist for a little rumblepit Spartan paintjob as are my ODST squad, can't wait to get them back.  :-*

A few pics from last night:

A number of crouching troopers (dolly bodies) armed with well abberrant arms and various helmets.

(Main pic back row middle four): Although the plan is to have magnetic backpacks to signify different weapon and armour loadouts, (including jumppacks) I've gone for a number of dedicated jump pack spartan poses too, hopefully I'll do enough to field two teams of four for a real death from above, firebird Red vs Blue match. (More pics of these are they progress).

Arm/weapon swop for the forearm, (still to GS etc..) custom helmet sculpt  (scout).

Sniper using abberant arm, heresy sniper rifle, my custom sculpt helmet, kneeling dolly and leader waving arm.

Missile launcher using kneeling body dolly, aberrant arm with GW missile launcher added and pointing leader arm. Final one, simple weapon and supporting hand swop.

And finally:

Started the tracked Warthog:

Just took the wheels off and mocked up, will need to bulk out the rears of the units so they sit right in the arches but hey it's a start.

Thanks for looking.

David: checked but no details re base camo though I think you've said in the past it was black grey. Can you see from the pics of the other thrree bud?

Pretty sure it's black/grey but can't tell from the photos - I'll go with that.

So there's always been a reference in the Halo series to a non miltarised version of the warthog.

So I went on the hunt and found this little monkey:

And bought two 1:43 scale ones from eBay.  :D. Think I might paint one yellow ;)

I like the fact that its slightly different and not jyst a utilitarian vehicle with a paintjob and a set of rims so to speak.  I might make it a rival company's copy and do one of my many as a true civilian version.

Either way it's a great little vehicle.

@dwartist - I hope you realise you are responsible for me going into an Evil Empire store at lunchtime and picking up a box of the GW Scouts.

It became rather tricky when they asked me what I wanted them for. I didn't think they'd appreciate "I'm planning to sand off the eagles, replace the heads with Pig Iron ones, most of the guns with Hasslefree ones, and use them in a non-40K setting with non-40K rules", so I waffled about "converting to special forces" and ran for the door  ;D

I was thinking the same thing Rob. Think i might have some metal ones lying about as well. Either way you can usually find them for cheap in sources other than retail. I be looking for a few next weekend while browsing the flea market tables.  :-)

beautiful jobs! It is ironic as I have an army made from the scouts that I use for my americans in my hard sci fi world. I use the same helmets as well but I have used the GW bolters which I actually hate. What is the gun that you are using there? (I hate to tear up painted models but I am tempted to change the weapons, that is the only thing that I don't like on mine.

Wait, I think I just figured it out. you kept the bolters but clipped off the barrel and added a barrel of another gun (is it a lasgun?) and added a scope. I like it! (where was barrel and scope from?)

Get the specs out Rodrigo! The fifth digit is the thumb and that's gripping the weapon on the other side, out of view. The grey 'finger' you see is actually the foot of the figure behind.

Talk about a bad foot placement, lol. It really looked like a unpainted finger. Of course I could ask why does the guy have one hand gloved and the other ungloved, but I think GW wouldn't reply to that question, lol.

Yeah, I know David's quality for some time now (I think he painted the first figure/vehicle for me in 2008 ) that's why I was wondering what went wrong with that finger. In the end it was a foot  ;D

Thanks, I appreciate that, I will have to order some heresy guns and do a bit of clipping. Never liked bolters but that makes them look good. I also took all skulls and eagles and any GW symbols off. (Hate all the gawdy stuff gw puts on their marines)

 Hello everyone.

This thread is one of the reasons i signed up.
At the moment i am painting a imperial guard army but i have used the colour scheme of marines and odst's (Halo2/3) to inspire my guardsmen and storm troopers.
A example is i have painted nearly all of my storm troopers to be just like this Halo action clix Odst (Halo 2) but i have painted the visor blue to be more like the halo 3 versions.
If anyone would like to see them i will create a new thread related to this one showing and explaining my army.

Whilst wandering around on nu-earth I've been looking at my halo stuff and realised I'm kinda locked into a forever war sci-fi tip. Also relesed I've not taken a shot of the odst lineup now that Dwartist has painted them all up for me so here we go:

Going to try to run the two projects side as the gaming boards can easily share some of the same pieces.

Anyway I was taking another look at the micro ops stuff from Mcfarlen. Whilst most of the models are either too big for 15mm or too small for 28mm, the banshee flyer is actually well scaled for 28mm, ( Shown here with one of the almost 20 ish mm convenant elites it comes with. Checked against my Livejoy Convenant greens and looks good.

Any funds from these will go in the pot for further casting. If anyonevwants a set pm me. As i say these are a private project and not for general retail so when the five are gone thats it as these are currently  addition to my needs.
