Title: [KICKSTARTER] Meridian Miniatures new range "tooth and Sword"
Post by: Andrew May on May 29, 2014, 11:10:51 PM

This is the first figure from my coming line of "Tooth & Sword" Chibi adventure miniatures.
I've had a lot of fun learning to sculpt in this style, it providing a perfect counterpoint to my "Steam & Aether" range in both technique and mood and I've have a great deal of fun developing this menagerie of adventuring animals.
I've been sculpting these figures in the scant spare time I get from commission sculpting since December last year. A great deal of imagination has been put into each figure and a great deal of time in figuring out how to make a range of great looking unique characters that are in almost all cases single part figures.
This character was the first that I sculpted back before Christmas, nominally a Gerbil Ranger, I'll be showing his companions over the next few days before I put the figures up for funding on Kickstarter which I beleive is a popular way to launch a range at the moment  ;D

These look fantastic!

Ive got a few of your Impact! sculpts - looking forward to the kickstarter very much!

I was looking at the mouslings from Reaper for SDE but I think these guys will fit the bill nicely :)

Do you know if there will be a game/ruleset with the launch?

I do like these little cute things, mate.

I will never use them but that will never stop me thinking that they are great.

Thanks!
There's no rule set to come but I don't think it's needed in this case, I intend to game using SoBH but SDE or any skirmish/dungeon rule set would work well.

Hi Tadgie, as soon as I get the initial master castings back from Griffin moulds, I'm expecting them this week.

Today's preview is a Wolf Anti-paladin, I particularly enjoyed sculpting this character. :)

Lion Paladin to balance out that nasty wolf today. This will be the only two piece casting, the shield being a separate piece.

I probably should not show this to the wife but hey...

Before I do, and she will ask, how tall are these figures?

They are roughly 28mm sized, I'll measure them when in back "in the office" tomorrow.

Yes, they're all roughly 30mm tall to the top of the head (excluding ears) the centre of the eyes at about 25mm (all give or take a mm or two).

A few....

Edit done.

Six so far...

About fairly evenly split between "Good", (Gerbil, Lion, Songbird,) and "Baddie"  (Feline, Wolf, Bat) so far?

I suppose the Songbird could be "Neutral"...

Glenn

So we 9 currently and plural "neutrals" which means 2+...

I count 11 at least.

This could be fun...  Perhaps a non-lethal gladiatorial games setting?  I bet I could even get the negative view towards war games people to let play a table top game with something like that.

t's my great pleasure to launch the Kickstarter crowdfunding for my new range on figures called "Tooth & Sword". I've been working on these figures since before Christmas in my spare moments from full time commission sculpting. It's been great fun coming up with these figures and I'm really happy that I can finally share them with you. For those of you that don't know, the Meridian Miniatures team consists of just me with a little help from some talented folk providing artwork, graphics and so on. There's no design team or international manufacturing partners, I just want to share the best figures I can with those that really want to own them. To that end I've sculpted all of the figures myself and I'm having the casting handled by some of the UK's best firms, both metal and traditional resin options are provided, no crossing your fingers over novel or unfamiliar materials. This is a modest campaign, I'm not hoping to race through endless "stretch goal" figures but I am hoping to be able to give away all sorts of printed goodies and more should we raise enough to allow me to. Being a one man band I need all the help that I can to promote the campaign so please, if you can, spread the word, share on social media and any forums you frequent.
Many, many thanks.

Hi everyone, I've been asked a couple of places about the size of the figures, I don't know how I neglected to include that info in the first place but here's a couple of helpful pictures for you.

(I kept the groups separate to prevent a skirmish from breaking out).

It's been a great first day, we've reached over 30% already in such a short time, thanks so much to everyone that has jumped on board!

Don't forget to tell all your friends, if there's a forum, news feed or related site that you think would want to know about the project then please spread the word. Also note that you can find me on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Meridian-Miniatures/278329682295664 for some reason KS doesn't seem to be able to sync to my page.

Cons:

1) Size keeps that from being used with anything else I currently plan on keeping.

2) Well, give me some time and I may come up with a #2

3) My budget is a little tight right now.

Pros:

1) I like them a lot.

2) The wife and daughters may like the 'cartoon' and 'cute' factors of the figures.

3) I can think of several rules I can adapt to play with these figures.

Gracias,

Glenn

I don't suppose you know how they scale next to Super Dungeon Explore figures? Might attract some interest from people collecting those if they are compatible.

Well, I sculpted for Impact and the scale is the same.
There's this picture floating around the web of a comparison between SDE, Warheads and Impact (right).

Hi everyone! I'm not going to have much free time this weekend so I thought that I would leave you with this preview for the meantime.

He's a Mouse city guard, he could be employed as a fighter or mercenary in many a situation I'm sure. It would be in my best interest in mould costs to keep these neutral figures held back until we reach £4000 so I'll be revealing them as the days pass to drum up further interest.

I'm also working on a couple of "add on" models but they'll probably be staying under wraps until they're ready to show.

I might get chance to pop by and comment over the weekend from time to time but otherwise I'll wish you a good one!

Cheers, Andrew.

Chibi + anthropomorphics + fantasy = win! :)

Putting the kictraq chart here as that kind of thing can draw a little extra profile by doing so (I can say from experience). :)

Today we have the Pug fighter! A real asset to any adventuring party that might roam in dangerous woods and ruins!

Now, the tentative news I have is that I will be giving the moulding company a call tomorrow and having a chat about changing the mould configuration to let me unlock the neutrals whilst still remaining viable within the £3000 goal. I posted the masters off to them "next day" today so they can look the options over (they already have the Good Guys). If it works out I will be adding new pledge levels so that you can all get the full set should you want them.

so, more to come tomorrow.

Really can't afford it but I'm in for 8 figures...

Now to explain that to the spouse...

Fortunately she received 3 gift cards at various craft stores for with several hundred $$$ (Total, I have a limit to my madness,) for scrap booking, card making, and other craft hobbies for Christmas when we both were working full time.  She won't be thrilled but she likes 'cute' figures and I will paint them for her (or get someone skilled to paint them...)

Hi everyone.

Today I had a good chat about my options for moulding the Neutrals in addition the the Good Guys and the Wicked ones while staying inside of the original £3000 goal. The good news is there's an easy way to do it! Each mould can hold 3 sets of 4 figures so I was planning on having 2 moulds each containing 3 of each set and adding another when the neutrals were unlocked. I can however put in uneven multiples of each set in ratio to whatever the surveys come back with. This will allow me to mould all three sets within budget!

So, I have created a pair of new pledge levels to cater for the unlocked figures. I'm afraid to make it viable I have had to restrict backers to having to pledge for ALL THREE sets to get hold of the Neutrals, no mixing and matching will be possible on the lower level pledges. If you only want one or two you can get them as resin add ons but to get the full set you MUST pledge for the bonus level pledges. If you intend to pledge higher then please alter your pledge now so we can get towards our intended goal, we're already at close to 50% so get out and spread the word!

Also note that I have decreased the cost of having your own custom Chibi sculpted, this is in line with my private commission rate but you''re saving a huge amount on the casting side of things alone. Please message me first if you wish to pledge at that level.

Enormous thanks go out to those that have pledged already and those that continue to come on board, stay tuned tomorrow for news of future add-ons.

Cheers

Andrew

Thanks Glenn, I've a felling you won't like my next post though!

Why?  I think those "Neutrals' are great figures that my wife will enjoy, and as the far side of the pond says, "In for a penny, in for a pound," I upped my pledged to get them all.

But that is where I must stop.

If this succeeds great.

If not, I won't have to sell the wife on on how her next "gift" fits in the budget we are making up...

Win/Win.

Gracias,

Glenn

We've had a great last 24hrs here. Pledges have reached nearly 75% overnight and one special backer will be getting her very own custom adventurer!

Now, here's some previews for the add-ons that I've got planned.

First up is a mighty Hippogryph, he's very much a work in progress at the moment but I'm working in the evenings after commissions to get him finished. I'm waiting for a quote from the caster on how much he'll cost me to produce but at around 60mm tall it will be quite a chunk of resin. I expect to be able to offer him as an add-on from Monday. Stay tuned to facebook for mr work in progress shots as he develops! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Meridian-Miniatures/278329682295664

Next up are some art prints from the hand of my good friend Honoel A. Ibardolaza.

I will be also offering these pieces, when complete as add-ons, Honoel will be finishing them over the weekend, while I calculate the postage costs but I hope to offer them very soon next week. the postcards will be A5 while the prints will probably be best at A3 size, more info to come.

Thanks again everyone.
Go to the campaign for more info.

Hello everyone, I hope everyone had a great weekend.

I've heard back from my resin caster and can now include the Hippogryph as an add-on or a separate pledge level. I've also had chance to work on the figure over the weekend and have gotten much closer to completing the beast!

The figure stands an just short of impressive but sensible 60mm tall and will be cast in 3 separate resin pieces. This fearsome fellow will be eating up quite a chunk of mould rubber and be a substantial centrepiece for your games or collection therefore I have put a price of £12 per figure for him with an additional £2 for international postage for those pledging solely for him. Just go to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2004599158/tooth-and-sword
(https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/002/183/159/df0de11eabd92d46d51d92a35731f93c_large.jpg?1403541970)

If you would like to add him on to your pledge then go to " manage my pledge" and adjust your total by £12, no need to add extra postage if you're already down for other models.
For the rest of the week I'll be devoting my mornings to finishing the piece whilst my afternoons will have to remain with my ongoing commission work. The sculpting will be finished before the end of the campaign, I don't like to keep my backers pledging blindly, wondering if the figure will live up to their expectations!
Go to Facebook to keep up with thw sculpting progress https://www.facebook.com/pages/Meridian-Miniatures/278329682295664

Also I'm happy to say that I received my metal master castings of "the good guys" for approval and they've already gone to my painter for artful daubing! Here's a shot of the castings, I'm sure you'll agree that Griffin Moulds have done a superb job of capturing every aspect of the master model's detail.

I'll be back tomorrow with more news of the art prints.

See you then!

Hurray! We're fully funded as of this morning. I just want to again extend my genuine thanks to everyone that has pledged to make this project possible. We've got just about a week to go now so  let's look forward to unlocking those free stickers before the campaign is up and anything else we can muster.

Cheers!

To add to a great day, I've got some pretty pictures to share!

Honoel Has done a fantastic job of bringing out the character of these critters! I am offering these as high quality A3 prints to anyone that would like to add them on to their pledge, this isn't something that I'm really going to be making profit on, as the postage costs are unfortunately high but I can't not offer them as I'm so happy with the artwork and I'm sure a few of you are going to really enjoy having them up on the wall of your gaming room!

If you would like an A3 art print and you are in the UK then just add on £10 for EACH print (lion/mouse or wolf/bat) that you would like. If you are in the rest of the world then please add £14 for EACH print that you would like. These will ship separately to the rest of your pledge and the rates for international postage are especially high for postal tubes, I'll have the postcard set ready to show by the weekend for you if you want a pocket sized art fix instead!

One more thing that I forgot to say this morning is thanks to our second "custom adventurer" pledge, another lucky lady will be getting their very own character!

I received the first test casts from my resin caster today and I think you'll agree that they look superb. They are really clean, lightweight casting, with virtually no prep to do before painting. I can't wait to have the whole lot here in resin and the time to crack those paint post open!

Interesting side note, I forgot to say that the lion has is shield cast away from his body (as you can see on a tab to one side in the picture!) this will need to be cut away and glued in place, it's the only separate piece in the whole range, same in metal too.

Now speaking of painting, I will have pictures of the Good Guys all painted ready to show tomorrow for you so stay tuned!

I'd love to spring for the resin ones instead of metal, but I fear the price difference is more than I can handle atm. :'(

Lovely stuff though. ;)

Don't worry too much Seb, the metals are such wonderful casts I just prefer the lightness of the resins seeing as they're quite substantial figures.

I'm very pleased today to be able to show you the first figures that I've had painted for the range.

Here we've got "The Good Guys" expertly painted by the very talented Roy "Duff" Duffy. He's done a great job of turning them around so quickly and would you believe these are his first chibi style figures! You can find more of Roy's work here: https://www.facebook.com/DuffPaint and around the various online miniatures forums.

Also my most sincere thanks goes out to another "Custom Adventurer" backer that has come on board today! There'll be some really nice figures for the rest of you to pick up in a year.

Cheers!

I find in my old age that I also prefer the light weight of resin for this sort of thing.  lol

The painted ones look amazing though, if I ever have enough money again, I should hire that Duffer too.

Ok, the total is adjusted due to a backer pledging too much but we are happily still over the £3.5k stretch goal. So, free stickers for all!

Plus I've decided to throw in this one (below) too! The local print shop I'm using has given me really good rates with me popping my head in every few days so I might as well as well pass on my good fortune.

Every single person that has backed the project will be getting these included with their rewards, size will be A5 or less, perfect for applying to you questing pack or sword scabbard ;)

I'm going to take some individual shots of the figures later as I've had a few requests across the forums so expect to see them over the weekend.

We're on the last few days so if you#re planning on pledging then please head over!

Sorry everyone, I was imagining that the campaign will end tomorrow for the whole weekend! so, final round up tomorrow......

Right, today we have the Hippogryph finished and ready to show off.

Here he is in all his glory! It doesn't seem like I've done much since it was first shown but there's so much work in the fiddly details, filling as many undercuts as I can physically reach, smoothing each shape and even the (nerve racking) cutting up of each part! (you can see the cut where I separated the talon at the elbow)

Here you can see the hight of the figure, it really is an imposing fellow! The beast will happily sit on a 25mm round base (supplied) although you may choose to base him on a larger size.

Here he is cut up for moulding, I'll be sending him off shortly to be duplicated for your collections!
Remember, you can add him to your pledge or pledge just for him alone, come and join in quick as we've go just over one day to go! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2004599158/tooth-and-sword

Many thanks again and especially to those backers that have come on board over the weekend and today.

Hi everyone, we've got less than a day to go and we've made great gains overnight!

I just wanted to share something that ended up in my inbox this morning in a weird bit of circular promotion! Superb designer and all round creative powerhouse David AKA Zhu has dreamt up his own backstory and oldschool "Warhamster" stats for the Lion Paladin!

http://realmofzhu.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/tooth-sword.html

This is precisely the kind of fun project that I imagined people coming up with when I started sculpting the range, so bravo and let's hope you all find creative ways of incorporating the little guys into your own games.

16hrs to go and we've come on wonderfully today, thanks to all you last minute backers! Very special thanks to our fourth custom adventurer, there will be some really fun figures for the rest of you to get your hands on in a year's time!

We've passed 4K, higher than I could have imagined even a week ago but there's still time to get your pledge or add on those extras. Remember if you want the Hippogryph, the prints, post cards or even any extra single resin figures then you just need to go to your pledge and adjust it by the relevant amount.

I'll jump online later tonight to answer any question that you may have and in the morning all going well in case there's been any extra queries over night. The campaign ends tomorrow morning so be sure to finalise your pledges tonight so that you don't miss out.

Thanks again everyone, I'm really looking forward to finally getting these figures produced and into your hands.

We are funded as of this morning with a massive amount coming in in the last few days, over £1000 since the weekend! I would like to extend my most sincere thanks to every backer, everyone that reblogged, shared on facebook or spread the word in any way! Special thanks go out to those "Custom Adventurer" pledgers, you will be receiving your own very special rewards in due course, and I will naturally be showing the progress I make with each over the coming weeks.

I've already gone to the post office this morning to send the Hippogryph to the casting firm, and put in the initial mastering order for the metal figures. I'll be keeping you all informed as to the progress as everything happens. I won't get the actual funds for a couple of weeks but will be sending out your surveys in the next few days.

I'll  be setting up a blog for Tooth & Sword shortly and have an online store in the works for after you've all received your rewards, until then you can keep abreast of news by "liking" me on Facebook.

Thanks again to everyone!

Andrew
