Title: Using CROM for Greek mythology?
Post by: Mister Rab on June 09, 2014, 02:00:18 PM
I made the mistake of going on Matakishi's website (http://www.matakishi.com/agonheroicroleplay.htm) last night after a very pleasant evening involving Ray Harryhausen's "Jason and the Argonauts" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF_Fi7x93PY) and a couple of gin and tonics. So now I have the excellent looking Crom rules on my laptop and a baker's dozen of Bronze Age Miniatures skeletons and Greeks winging their way through the post to me courtesy of a 20% sale on the Fenris website (http://www.fenrisgames.com/home.html).

Has anyone out there already come up with character cards, scenarios or items that would be suitable for Greek mythic gaming with Crom?

Greek historical gaming would not work so well, but greek mythic gaming where you have a few heroes and their sidekicks would work REALLY well.  Make Agamemnon a 15-dice character and give Zeus a couple dice-bricks of his own, really.

Oh yes, I'm in it for the myths and giggles  ;)

I'd be looking at having the gods themselves very much offstage and their favour or disfavour shown through the number of dice a hero has, or possibly through magic. Forcing Circe to turn your men back from pigs into men without either being turned into a pig yourself, or killing her because you still need her is one scenario I already have in mind. And of course the "children of the Hydra" skeleton fight  8)

Fifteen dice sounds like a lot (Conan gets twelve), but I haven't played it yet so will give it a go. Thanks Froggy.

Haven't tried it yet with Crom, although the system seems like it would be a pretty good fit.  I've been meaning to grab and print those rules for what seems like ages, now!

Have you taken a look at 7th Voyage?  Also a very suitable set of rules, pretty much purpose-built for Greek Mythology (of a cinematic slant, very heavily inspired by Harryhausen's movies).

I have, and it looks great, but this would very much be an excuse to paint some greek myth miniatures and get my little 'uns and non-gamer students to play in an hour or under. The immediate accessibility of CROM is the appeal, along with the pleasing dice pool mechanism that encompasses all sorts of odd events.

Gotcha.

You'll have to keep us updated, I like the look of Crom and would like to see how your project develops.
