Title: Bell Tower
Post by: Mad Lord Snapcase on June 12, 2014, 03:52:22 PM
I accidentally knocked this bell down from our garden shed (where it had been hanging for some time) and when I picked it up to replace it, I suddenly saw the Pulp potential. I am now constructing a tower for it. It’s turned out a big bigger than I originally intended! Here’s a couple of photos of the WIP, more updates to follow.

I meant to include this one for comparison of size.

'Accidently'  ;)

Looks good so far, as for the size, with a big bell comes a big tower. What kind of 'material' are you going for finish whys on the tower? will it be a stone grey or sandstone colour? (like at churches)

Not sure yet, it's going to be an open tower to give a good sight of the bell. I'll make my mind up as I build it. It might be more Asian in origin, I think.

Asian styles are usually quite decorative too. I look forward to seeing your progression on this with interest.  :)

Wot she said!!

I'm reminded of a tale told me by an old Marine when I was kid in the 60's.
He'd retired after WWII, volunteered for Korea, retired again, then was quietly told he was too old for Viet Nam.

Well before Guadalcanal he'd gone straight from boot camp to Nicaragua, "green as grass'.
After endless slogging through jungles & mountains, the patrol he was on was ambushed by sandinistas.
Separated from their mule train, and it's ammunition, they fought their way to the outskirts of a village,
Outnumbered, surrounded & cut off the Marines hunkered down in a mud hut/house.  The rebels called on them to surrender, saying they couldn't resist much longer without cartridges, and those were all on the captured mules.  The sergeant in charge of the patrol, a Great War veteran, asked what made them think the Marines were short of ammo, raised his '03 Springfield, and pinged a round off the bell in the church tower across the village, about 700 yards or so away.  The envoy hastily departed, and the sandanistas settled in to see which gave out first, water or ammo.  To keep up the fiction the sergeant "rang" that bell every hour, on the hour, day & night, until a Marine  aviator happened on the scene.  That worthy had his gunner drop a coupla canteens & some machine gun belts to the beleaguered patrol,  than dashed away to get more aircraft.  The sandanistas declined to remain for the balance of the festivities, though they did keep the mules.  The Marines suffered only from thirst, cuts n'bruises, not even a real wound.  Sandino's men lost more than pride, but nobody counted the corpses. That bell however, took a helluva beatin'.  The priest was neither pleased nor amused, while my friend thought it was the most remarkable shooting he'd even seen, 2 BIG wars failed to change that opinion.

I've never found documentation for his anecdote, & suspect it's a "sea story", but I've been told stranger truths.

YMMV

Valerik

EDIT:my miserable spelling

What some people will do to keep from working on a secret rocket base....

I'm afraid the secret rocket base is still under construction with quite a lot more work to do but here's a teaser of the WIP:

Well, this current diversion project has taken a toll on his output.

Frankly Lloyd, it does look Wright, don't it?

Though P C has a lot more influence on him than Christopher, it seems Wren Ol' Snappy sappers summat it's usually aces.

Mustn't overpraise him, his fez don't fit no more as it is.

In this case though, tis a real Ring Dang Do!!!

Seems it's gone down in price, I paid £19.99 from a This Is It shop.

Now £9.99 from there for the same one or still  £19.99 if you want a blue one.

http://www.thisisitstores.co.uk/search/lighthouse.html (http://www.thisisitstores.co.uk/search/lighthouse.html)

You can get them on eBay as well but it looks like £14.95 is the cheapest on there at the moment.

Brilliant, thanks, just what I needed.
I was about to build one but this will do nicely and has a built-in revolving light so £10.00 is a bargain.

It is a real bargain at that price. The only thing you may need to correct is that the door seemed too high, but I just blocked the bottom part with some steps.

Is the lighthouse railing large enough to accommodate figures?
Title: Re: Bell Tower
Post by: Mad Lord Snapcase on June 21, 2014, 02:23:41 PM
No, but you could snip off the existing railing, make a walkway with coffee-stirrers and either put the railing back or make another one. I think it would look alright.

This photo shows it better............
