Well I am feeling lucky today, so will try to post the beginning of a battle.
The set up is this.
Mutineers have lost a battle outside the city. (Will have to game that one day)
They are in retreat and need to march to the gate at the fort.
They have a two turn head start, then the British march on.

The Indians on turn 2 in the town ready to try to delay the British.

A close up of one of the brigades. Each brigade has two or three infantry Batts., guns and a small amout of cav.

One of the British brigades marching on the table.
The British brigades are about the same size. But have better morale.
One of the British brigades advance.
Hodson's Horse tried to out flank the Indian infantry but ended up attacking the front due poor die rolling for movement.
They still won the fight forcing the infantry to retreat.
Along the lines the Indians would stand with one unit and others would retreat. Then they would do it again.
The die gods were not kind to the British. Poor rolling by the Brits were letting the Indians get away.

Part of the other brigade, Irregular Horse and the Naval Brigade.

Well I hope to show the rest of the battle.
Early in the battle the British had a number of poor die rolls for movement.
This causes their plan to attack to not proceed as planned.
But their luck started to change.

The Highlanders charge into the flank of the enemy, routing them.
At the top left British Irregular Horse move to cut off more Indians.

Still moving towards the gate most of the Indians have a chance to make it.
Now we came to the end game. The Indians still had a unit of infantry and 2 guns on the walls.
They now bring out the infantry to cover the retreating units.

Here the British are in a bit of a mess. They are trying to move the Horse Artillery pass the Highlanders.
Here as you can see a number of British units have moved close to the gate.
It was interesting that once the Indian units were inside the walls they just sat in side, they could have provided covering fire for the rest.
The British move up to the walls. The Irregular Horse attack but are driven back.
Sadly for the British they could not organize a proper attack and the rest of the Indians retreated into the gate.
It was a close run game. In the end the British just could not overcome their poor movement they had at the beginning of the game.

The rules I play with were written by Larry Brom for horse and musket warfare. I am told they were written before he wrote TSATF rules.
They were given to me back in the mid 1980s.The buildings were mostly made by me, some dating back to the 1980s. The fort walls were made just 2 weeks ago.
Also all the figures are Foundry, most painted in 1988-89.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
A side note, when I first painted up these figures they were on stands of three, in 12 man units.
I really did not like the look, so about half the units had 8 more figures painted up.
Now 20 figure units but I started playing some skirmish games with them.
But still wanted to have units on stands. So I blue tacked them to metal bases.
They have stayed that was for years and years.
Finally in the last 2 weeks after the battle I have glued them 4 to a base and terrain the bases.
So in future battles they will look better.

That's a nice building. I like the way you've done the false arches - simple but effective , and caught the style of the region.

Maybe add a lean-to roof between the two main buildings with either a striped awning or thatched roof if you feel it needs something more, maybe a bigger dome on one of the flat roofs or a small well (or even just a tree, for shade) in the middle of the courtyard?

@sjwalker51

Thanks for the feedback
I have some nice domes, will add one.
Some type of lean to would look good as well.
A tree or two, maybe a small pool would work.
Will get to work on the suggestions and post when finished.

Loosely based on the battle of Futtehpore.

The other Indian brigade already formed on the out side of the town, to the right.

One of two British brigades deployed, ( hard to see they are on a hill 2 inches high.)
The other brigade of British, face the town. The two large regiments of British are armed with Enfield rifled muskets.
The British started movement forward, negating the Enfield"s range.

They soon engage an Indian unit in a close ranged firefight. On their left, a unit of Sikhs.

This was the high tide of the British advance. Cannons and more Indian Infantry would start to wear down the British.

On the British left flank, the Indians continue to advance and try to out flank the British line.

On the British left, a fall back by the Naval Brigade was ordered.
By this time large losses of men had put the British on the defense.
I must add that I playing the Indians and was having a great day on die rolls.
The British are pushed out of the woods. Out in the open, they would be troubled by Cav. on their flanks.
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/FaI6h1L.jpg" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/FaI6h1L)
Indian Cav. on the British left, have finally gotten into the rear of the British. They are about to attack and defeat the remains of a small unit of British Cav.
By this time the British were completely out flanked by both Inf. and Cav.
The Indians advance on all fronts. Bleak day for the British.

Brave Sikhs try to hold out against the foe.

Even the Indian general, Tatya Tope riding the elephant get in on the advance.
By this time the British were almost surrounded.
At this time we called the game. A tough game for the British.
Rules used were modified TSATF.
All most the figures were painted back in 1988-89.
Hope you have enjoyed the report.

That's a lovely looking game.

Was the possibly unhistorical outcome down to lucky dice for the Mutineers, or did TSATF struggle to capture the unique feel of the period?

If you're interested in the period, be sure to sign up to the Victorian Wars forum site for loads of well informed posts on related topics, not least who was armed with what during the Mutiny, for example - some surprises there, for sure!

@ sjwalker51

Thanks for the comments about the game.
Yes the Mutineers had great shooting by excellent die rolling.
An example, the Naval Brigade was in the woods. I needed 8s or better to hit on a D10.
I rolled a 10 and 3 9s with four die.
Also the British player did not use the longer range of the Enfield to shoot up the Infantry.
Also playing a game you want to give both sides a chance to win.
In talking about the game afterwards it was stated that maybe the Indian units could have been a stand or two smaller.
It would have made them take morale tests faster as they lost figures.
Over all a few changes will be made for the next game.
And for lunch, I cooked chicken curry. :P :)

@Atheling

Here area few things I am thinking about changing for the next game.

1) Muskets shoot 12" Enfields shoot 18" will increase Enfield's range to 24"

2) Make Mutineer units 4 stands of 4 figures, down from 5 stands. Will make them take morale tests quicker.

3)Any unit that falls below half strength, minus 1 (-1) when rolling morale tests.

4) British units win ties in melee. May even bump that up to plus 1 (+1).

That is about all I plan to change for the next game we play.

TSATF for the Mutiny?  Somebody put me out of my misery, please!  lol  Find a better set of rules.

AAR later, not enough time to digest.  But I do want to comment on the building where you are requesting some ideas - create some suitable rugs to drape over the walls.  Doing so allows some real nice splashes of color to 'snap' up the building.  Plus a few large ceramic containers scattered about.  Will enhance the drama of the piece, which is quite nice as is but I agree it needs some spicing up.  Hey, a few bowls of spice, a little saffron, a little curry...

IIRC from my few weeks of super-keenness on all things IM, the real issue with the Mutineers was lack of a unified command. So some lads would bravely wallah off to blast the British, while others would sit around eating chapattis and making idle conversation. So perhaps some C&C issues would work in as well as the morale tests.

I always thought that personality issues would be fascinating as well. Perhaps a British major who halts a vital flanking movement for an hour to bury a murdered missionary and give an impromptu sermon about the holiness of righteous vengeance instead of actually showing up where he's supposed to?

Also how about some heat exhaustion and supply difficulties for the Brits?

Okay, had time to digest the AAR.  Sounds like a fun game - and I see you are a fellow west coastie, though a bit north of me by a kilometer or two (hundred).  Can't recommend what rules to use but there has to be something better than TSATF for Indian Mutiny.  Devil's Wind, maybe?  But if that is what you have then that is what you use.

I'm bound to mention the "War Without Mercy" Yahoo group, where you'll find a draft variant of the "Sharp Practice" skirmish rules. Originally designed for 1:1 games with around 80-120 figures per side, there are also rules for larger brigade-level games which neatly covers most of the Mutiny actions.

And check out the FIBIwiki for masses of information and links to battle reports.

OK, guys.
A little up date on the rules.
The name of the set of rules I am using is,
1810 Napoleonic Wars, 1862 Civil War,
1870 Franco Prussian, British Egyptian 1882.
War game rules by Larry Brom
(Boy, that took me 5 minutes to type.) ;)
These rules were given to me about 1985-86.
I was told that they predate TFATF.
Many of the same ideas Larry uses in TSATF he uses in these rules.
The big difference is figures are based on stands usually of 3 or 4 figures.
A couple of examples, you fire by stand not by figure. Melee, you fight stand vs stand.
Hope you get the idea.
The great thing with this set of rules, is you can plug in rules you want.
As for better sets of rules out there, yes there may be.
I just got The Devil's Wind rules in the mail a couple of days ago.
After reading them, a fine set. Will try them out in a game.
The great thing about TSATF is most everyone has played them.
When you have new players that is a big help.
Besides I am an old guy, :(, hard to learn new rules.
I figure I have played some version of TSATF around 500 times in the last 33 years.

@huevans

You are right.
Command and control issues hurt the Indians all during the war.
In the rules there is a section for commander control.
Each side roles a D10 for each brigade. If you don't role the right number the unit or the brigade does not move.
I really do like the rule, it adds to the fog of war.
But some of my gaming buddies don't. So at times I don't use it.( It was not used in this game.)
For the Mutiny it will be used in the following battles. If they don't like it, well war is hell. :'(
As to personality issues, I think they are a lot of fun and can add a lot to the game.
Event cards and or charts such as in The Sword in Africa, can add to the confusion of battle.
Now I have to get the other guys "to see the light." ;)

Like the multi-post battle report - you did a fine job of letting the pictures do most of the "talking" with just enough text to flesh out your story.

Your "market" building is very Ian Weekly inspired (even if you didn't know it!).  And do like the town walls, gives me added inspiration - I have lots of round bits to add to walls but hadn't thought of the square bits tilted into 'lozenge' shapes, good job.  Or just squared bits, that works, too.

Finally have some what figured out how to use a new camera.
So want to post a few photos of units.
The 7th Hussars, all Foundry figures and a little Green Stuff.
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/DwfBqmk.jpg" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/DwfBqmk)
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/p1YQqoc.jpg" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/p1YQqoc)
And the 93rd Highlanders. A little story about these guys. I first purchased the figures back in 1988.
A friend saw them and wanted to paint some.He painted six. I then had to painted another six for a unit of twelve.
Then I decided that I did not like the look of only 12 figure units. So started painting 8 figures of my other units. But did not paint any more of the 93rd.
Finally after about 26 years, I painted the other 8. Now I have a unit of 20. Is that a record for being on the lead pile. lol
Not the best photos, having trouble with closeups.

A thoroughly enjoyable gawp at some nice pictures of what looks like some good fun games.
 8) 8)

I really like the way that you have added the illusion of textures to your cloths.
Works well for me, especially the first few pictures.
 :-* :-*

As for suggestions of how to improve the buildings: I would add a few more stages to the painting, with a slower transition between the coulours.
I typically use five stages of drybrushing, more sometimes if the 'texture' is there.

There is nothing wrong with the construction at all, they look really good.
They are really well thought out and assembled, well done!
 :-* :-*

Small details are always good too.
Add the odd weed or crack in the plaster etc as you have in some of the others.
Small details really help.
 ;)

Going back for another drool now, as they are very inspirational.
 :D

randy they look great and you managed to conceal the age difference.  there are cosmetic companies who would pay greatly for your secret.  seriously, great paint job. rick

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.
It has been a fun project so far.
Going back to figures painted in the late 1980's and trying to match paint jobs has be interesting.
Hope there is lots more to come.
Have another battle planned soon, if I can fit it in around one of my kid's wedding.
I told her to just elope.  lol

Mason,
Thanks about the comments about the buildings.
Some great ideas. Will add to their look and will be easy to do.

Not much time for gaming this month due to my daughter"s wedding.
It went very well, now back to the fun stuff. ;D
Decided on the battle for the Char Bridge, Lucknow Sept.25 1857.
Two brigades of British Inf. two batteries horse guns, Cav Regiment.
Indians had two brigades of Inf. and three batteries, but not at full strength.
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/IIJ75tS.jpg?2" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/IIJ75tS)
The start of the game. Indians with one brigade on the table. One Regt. in the Yellow House.(center of table)
One the left edge, British will come on, top right 2nd brigade is coming across the bridge. (Great die roll to get them to enter on turn one.)
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/wAo3CMH.jpg?1" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/wAo3CMH)
The Yellow House, on a few maps looks like more like a compound. Would play an important part in the battle.

A view from behind the Mutineer line with the 2nd British brigade advancing.

A good view of the 2nd brigade. They would be able to maintain a good formation during the game. At this time the horse guns of the British,
were able to fire into the Indians, causing some lost to the Indians.
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/aRec4AK.jpg?1" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/aRec4AK)
The other Indian brigade has advanced with most of their units on the other side of the bridge.

Here the Indians have started to deploy on the other side of the Yellow House. At the top, British Cav. try to flank them.

The British about to attack the Yellow House.

The Indians were not able to advance fast enough to flank.
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/cAMpG7M.jpg?1" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/cAMpG7M)
The Sikhs attack but were thrown back, much to everyone's surprise.

But the Naval Brigade defeats the Indians and take the compound.

<img src="http://i.imgur.com/WarW7ai.jpg?1" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/WarW7ai)
Here you see the reason why the Indians could not advance to flank.
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/Lgzl120.jpg?1" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/Lgzl120)
A view of the 2nd British brigade, They continue to kill off men in the Indian Inf Regts. But the Indians do get their licks in against the British.
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/Lgzl120.jpg?1" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/Lgzl120)
Here is a good view the the most important attack of the game. If you look at theIndian unit next to the Yellow House, they turn and attack
the Naval Brigade. With a plus 2 added to their attack, they fail. (Very poor die rolling by me) :-[
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/rQncA6f.jpg?1" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/rQncA6f)
Sadly for the Mutineers the end is near.
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/nOtD06W.jpg?1" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/> (http://imgur.com/nOtD06W)
The British in force in the Yellow House. Most of the Indian units were down about 1/2  in figures. A couple of their units had routed and were off the table.
We called the game at this point. A great win for the British. Hope you enjoyed it.

More great eye-candy!
 :-* :-*

I particularly like the shrubland/difficult terrain areas with the aquarium plants on.
What is that base/groundwork made of?
That is a great look, and one that I shall be copying shamelessly when I get around to my jungle scenery.

It looks great!

  @Mason,
Thanks for the nice comments.
The shrub land is Lemax Moss Display Mat. Found at craft stores during Christmas.
Its about 39 inches long by 18 inches wide.
The moss is fixed onto a rubber backing.
It can be cut to shape.
I glued it on to some MDF board so I could drill holes to stick some of the wire plants in.
If you just wanted to, you could just hot glue plants to the moss.
I like the stuff a lot.

Really lovely looking stuff and nice to see you carried it on for so long.
Can I ask what you made your roads from ? Is it roofing felt ?
Brilliant photos.

flatpack@

The roads are just plain brown felt.
I sprayed them with Make it Stone, spray paint.
Then a little flock.
Gives a rough surface to them.

Thanks for the nice comments guys.
